The movie is a masterpiece. Leaving my apparent ethical and morality at balance, the movie unapologetically showcased the reality of India and incorporated such sensitive subject of North-East India's political climate with a regular journalist's love life. Although I admit there are some elements of the movie, which may not be appropriate for the current time being, the movie was way ahead of its generation and I don't understand why most critics only want some massive dramatic social messaging outcome in a storyline. The story was subjective to the director and his way of expressing stories might not be your cup of tea, but due respect please do not criticise the content and de-appreciate such complex story telling.

Dil se is a classic, a movie well before time. It's so subtle in its narrative that people for whom only overly dramatic sequences work just won't get what the movie is about. That kiss scene she made fun off shows PTSD, the trauma that haunts Meghna even in her youth. It's not only brilliantly enacted and beautifully shot, one can only Salute the makers for highlighting this important aspect of mental well being in 1998 and that too in South East Asia.
Songs, lyrics & visuals are more explicit and hence they registered well with every single person. I've not come across a person not appreciating these aspects.
And that last scene, Meghna just gives in, she surrenders to her human desires, she is drawn to aman and she embraces it. And that's death, the last stage of love.
There's not been a much poetic & artistic display of storytelling ever before and ever since.

This is almost the first time when I have to agree to disagree with you Sucharita ☹️. How is it possible that a director (along with his team) gave us these amazing songs that you are able to read so much into, in a film that doesn't seem to go well with them? They may have been written by Gulzar sahab and composed by AR Rehman but they were able to do this because they could "see it" in the script.
This film uses the trope of a boy meets girl, but it is essentially about the impossible emotion "love" that entails burning desire, painful longing, and destruction of the "self" (fanaa).
And the girl was involved from day one. She asks for a cup of tea, she scribbles message for him on sand, she takes a chance when she comes to ask for a room in his house. (I don't think there was a sexual harassment scene, I have read something similar in Fountainhead if I can remember correctly. )
There's a vulnerability that SRK brings to his character, as there should be if he's a seeker. Aman doesn't know shit but he's willing to go the distance and SRK makes sure we see that. ❤❤

There was a harrassment scene in Laddakh where they start fighting, and he forcefully kisses her, and then she loses her voice remembering the childhood rape trauma.
But the point is the character of SRK is flawed and obsessed and is not even rewarded for it. He dies in the end.
The fact that that scene is there shows a storyteller's prowess, that he's not afraid to go to that distance with his protagonist. And it serves two things. Tells us how flawed the character of Aman Verma is and a glimpse in Manisha's past.

    • @rajatgandharva4

The Time when the Indian Film industry had some guts to talk and comment upon the various insurgencies or the entangling political situations that were going in the nation.
Dil Se , a masterpiece that I would say told us about the Insurgency of the North East and also tells about and shows the brutal attacks and assaults of the ruling forces on the people of the north East. The film is not only a love story it is a Serious , intelligent Political Commentary on the scenario India faced back in 1990s plus not to forget the songs , lyrics , locations and the magical Cinematography of the film.
A good love story should always uplift the society and i think this film did it so.
This film still becomes relevant today as in portions and the areas of the nation those which have been neglected by the ruling authorities and where the people are still fighting for the rights that the govt. be it be the Congress or the now ruling party never thought or considered to provide them.
" It is of the utmost importance to be acquainted with the literature of a society and a nation to understand that society and the nation, because in consciousness of the life of the society is reflected in the literature of the times and the films , stories derived and adapted from the literature turns immortal as compared to the pieces made to satisfy the need and demands of the market."

I don't think that Mani Ratnam faulted with this one. Infact, if anything this probably is his most underrated movies. It had imperfect characters because that is how the world is, even with its WOKE-ness ..so sure enough one may argue that shahrukh's and preity's characters have traits that are problematic but it is also fine to portray them from a story tellers perspective coz people do exist like that.. and btw they aren't even rewarded for their behaviour so one can't object of them being celebrated . But beyond this really off the point observation, this movie stood out for the way it showed a human story. Love stories rarely are ever placed in a political and conflict narrative context in India. They are almost always shown as if they exist in a vaccum . And this one bravely went where nobody else did and not just that the intricacies with which the story unfolds are still believable.
A strong mention on Manisha's acting which is a masterclass on how to speak through silences. She speaks volumes through her pain and her anguish and an inability to speak what her heart desires because her character has a larger purpose much bigger than her own desires.
I disagree that this one hasnt aged well coz sure enough if we were to dissect each character in isolation and say - 'what they say or do was problematic', then we will never have the sensitivity to understand that you are looking at a character at a specific point of time and growth in their life. Judging a whole story based on just that is a bit unjustified.

I agree...the problem is that we are trying to judge the movie with our current standards. Compare it with other movies from 90s and then one will notice a stark difference. Mani Ratnam wanted to show flawed characters among which one of them is almost crazy in love. And when it comes to being crazy in love, there's hardly any rule to show such characters. It has to be from the imagination of the writer. All we can hope for is not to incentivize that craziness, which is what movies like Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh do. As you said, they were not rewarded for their actions in Dil Se.

Don’t agree at all with your views regarding the film’s acting. It had many more things to say beyond the songs and the fact that SRK in your opinion goes from Dar to KKHH to DTPH shows the range he demonstrated. Obsession and playfulness sort of reflect the love stages as well. Imo it’s a beautiful film that leaves over-the-topness to its songs and the rest of the narrative is refreshingly understated. Both lead characters have wonderful shades of grey and a film doesn’t always need a clear hero and villain. Lastly, it’s not good to reflect views such as stalker, one sidedness without giving context on the feminist views that existed in the 90s. Films are a reflection of the society and I don’t think this movie treated its women characters as naive. They are what they are 🙂

@Rownaz Haque , 1) Sucharita admits that she did not re-watch this movie until now but It seems her views are from when she saw the movie as a kid. That's unfair since the kids loved masala movies back then (Soldier, Dil to pagal hai, Badshah)
      2) Why this is way ahead of it's time: Look at the hit (shit) movies during that year: Karan Johar, David Dhawan, Abbas-Mastan were top grossers (98.78% of Indians like those movies). And this movie dealt with the insurgency in North-East India (which 98.78% of Indians don't connect to). The entire feel of the film is appropriately poetic, with a few romantic exchanges standing out quite memorable. The cinematography and music just are top notch.
      3) Indian audience not ready for such quality: Though Dil Se received a poor box office response in India, it found success overseas. It was screened at the Era New Horizons Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival. The film went on to win the Netpac Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, two National Film Awards, and six Filmfare Awards.
The film became the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts. Even two months after its release in September 1998 the film was still screened on five screens, five times per day with an average of 3000 spectators across all screens in the Cineworld complex in Feltham, West London.
      4) Last one: 98.78% Indians sill believe that fairness creams work. They have been testing the 14 days fairness challenge from last 28 years.

I think people should be able to take this much criticism, especially I believe SRK would be the first to be absolutely fine with such reviews over the years..
The logic of what local people like has got nothing to do with work of a critics. Nobody cares what critic say, the worst films of year are generally biggest hit. I respect your opinion but I disagree with your negative comments about the movie. It is meant to be like a poem, one focusing on Amar's character. The movie begins and ends with him. As for Meghna, she is his polar opposite. He’s meant to be drawn to her, like positive is to negative energetically. Therefore it is unnecessary to showcase Preity's character getting closure. Amar dies, so does his voice and his experiences. His poem has ended. Meghna (Moina's) love doesn't have to be showcased, as she keeps EVERYTHING hidden from Amar. Amar mentions this a few times too: 'yeh jo tumhare andhar bohot kuch chupa hua hai', and that's exactly what he loves the most about her. He can romanticise her silence, he can write stories about it in his mind. The only thing he knows of her is what is shown by her, and he adds it all to his love poem about her. But if you look closely, she does love him. She is drawn to him, she doesn't fight his love, she's merely trying to run from it (to no avail). Where Amar shows affection and love, Meghna represses it. Where Amar thinks innocently, Meghna has seen the cruelty and reality. Where Amar smiles and cracks jokes, Meghna is serious and dark. It is a beautiful dichotomy that merges and dissolves, clearing the havoc of life itself in the last scene. No more pushing and pulling, no more running and chasing, just utter surrender.. it's terribly dark, but it makes sense. It is beautifully acted by both. How a poem in the form of a movie should be.

Dil se is the movie which i will go back to millions of times till i die. The story, the acting, the cinematography and the music were so ahead of its time which i guess you will never understand. For me , you are a better reviewer for the Baaghi types of movies which we all can mock and laugh cause that's were your intelligence lies, mockery. What SRK has done in this movie was the best of his career, he portrayed the mad obsessed lover so effortlessly which was just his natural self, no extra effort. Manisha koirala in her mysterious avatar as moina was as effortless as ever. But nothing would have worked if there was not any story to tell, and Dil Se had a story to tell, to show the world how the minorities were treated in assam, and i guess the world was not ready for that truth. People loved Rang De Basanti because it talked about change in the system even taught people how to kill someone for that change and dil se had the same agenda, a change in the system but the killing didn't happen like rang de basanti.
Please don't review these classic movies, review soldier, dillagi, jaani dushman, hello brother , jai ho, race 3 these types of movies, do not go near any other mani ratnam movies my dear. They are better off without your difficulty to understand the sentence "way ahead of its time".
Also about the music of this movie... Each and every song along with the background score is a GEM. Chaiya chaiya doesn't make sense? Its ok, not all the item number makes sense. But Ae Ajnabee is something else... The story telling of SRK on the radio about his meeting with meghna.. no other actor could do justice, and then when the song is played it takes me to another happy place. The background score... I can listen to all day, pakhi pakhi pordeshi ...
Hands down one of the best album of Mr. Rahman.
P.S. it is very easy to criticize but if u are asked to dish out even 0.1% of any aspect of the movie, you will fail beautifully because if you had those talents you would have been in the movie, not reviewing them.

He alone can not change the whole Northern dispute that was shown as the rest of us. But As a true reporter he wanted to showed the what is the real picture by talking to the terrorist. And that is his only job and he was true to that. Later manisha also uses him and gets her job done. If she was so right with her morals she shouldn’t have done that and I'm not judging her either. It's just human nature to chase the things that we love whether it is love (for srk) or freedom (for monisha). About the kissing scene, although I am not in support if this scene but if u look closely u see She refuses saying I can not do this and I dont love u with which srk was not convinced. She could have beaten srk but she doesn’t as there is some sexual Attraction between them. She only overreacts when her past comes in her mind. And she realises the normal love life is not for her.

I usually don’t comment on the reviews, but seriously you need to keep your mind open when you watch a movie. I am not a fan of SRK but I must admit that this is one of his best movie. #growup

Agree about SRK's performance. It seemed too much even to my 12 year old self.
But the songs never fail once to mesmerize and intoxicate. They are truly an emotion in themselves. We are truly lucky to have been blessed by the genius of so many amazing artists through them!

What is she jabbering about? Movie is crystal clear in NOT sympathising with terrorists but with the oppressed. How much clearer do you need to get??? Amar is the hero since he sacrificed himself to save lives and all terrorists are caught in the end. This act of his was his submission for heroism, till this time yes the movie intended him to be a creepy stalker. And madam, Moina didn’t have a seizure. Her jaw got locked which happens sometimes due to stress or suddenness. It seems you made this video after lazily observing the movie without enough research.

I've watched the Dil Se song so many times and yet, I never noticed the fire at the end of the bridge. The way you explained the theme and put everything in perspective is superb! That's the difference between a generic film audience like myself and a film student like you. We may not agree to a lot of things reviewers say, but that's okay, we still need them. Its one opinion in a million and various opinions of similar content is what makes movies such a splendid form of art to emotionally invest ourselves in.

She didnt even know what the movie is! Such a worse review and also very "painful to watch"! Mani Ratnam shows the problem of the people living nearest to border how government dont count them vote and how they transform into terrorist for your own country how they people thought about the other indians and all what is there is politics! She didnt even watch the film again i bet! She just watch all the songs on youtube and yooo lets do time machine idiot! And yes dil se album was one of the best of AR Rahman

Looks like you only watched the songs and a couple of scenes here on RUclips after already deciding on what you wanted to say about the movie. It was SRK’s best performance and Manisha was outstanding. They no longer make movies with such delicate and understated nuances.

Dilse was/is a masterpiece. Never did I thought that India could ever create a high quality movie. Dilse was/is a benchmark. Dilse was/is is an inspiration. I don’t see what went wrong with the movie, I see what went right and there were too many rights. Two different worlds colliding and the non violent world wins even though he dies proving it and wins over the violent world.

Dil se ...a movie much ahead of its time but underrated one all because India wasn't prepared since audiences were just hooked to masala flicks like Kuch Kuch .......etc etc .... It really deserved to be the one of the finest film & Manisha koirala did a tremendous job as ulfa terrorist from Assam .

Sucharita, your take on DIl Se made me rethink of the movie in a difference sense, which sits together with Mani Ratnam's next war movie, Kannathil Muthamittal(A Peck on the Cheek) based on Tamil insurgency in Sri Lanka. Was the creepiness in Amar Verma deliberate, to symbolise the mainstream Indian political view? Why else, would Mani Ratnam go for Shah Rukh, a man who personifies the 'bollywoodness' of Indian youth during the late 90s, as his lead? Was it his way of stating the general Indian sense of jingosim, using up SRK to romanticise the apparent lack of respect to consensus to what Kashmir?Assam really wants? Was Amar's naivity, or sense of oblivion, India's naivity? And Preeti being a pointless character could be because she represents South India (Preeti, the character is a Malayali, a Keralite), to say that India, centered at Delhi(aka the Delhi boy Amar), is too obsessed about Kashmir/Assam and holding on to it, while overlooking South and it's problems. While Mani Ratnam's other two films is his terrorism trilogy (Roja and Bombay) has its own romantic track, it is in Dil Se where the romance resorts to creepy grounds. I don't believe that Maniratnam was a conditioned misogynist who didn't care about denial. The ending where Amar stops Moina is where the parallel between Kannathil Muthamittal comes into point. In the tamil film Prakash Raj's character Harold Vikramasinhe, a Sinhalese doctor, remarks war to be pointless bloodshed, oblivious to his privilege, oblivious to the struggle of Sri Lankan tamil community, much like Amar. The movie also has Shyama (Nandita Das), a seperatist like Moina, who personifies the said struggle and trauma. In the end Shyama continues to be a separatist but with the baggage of a promise and lot of guilt. Both these movies reflect Mani Ratnam's political view which I believe is that, he understands the struggle, but doesn't agree to the violence. He believes it's better for India (Amar), even with its obsession and lack of understanding, to stop its borders from erupting with violence. All of this is my speculation upon watching the video. I haven't seen both these films in a long time. Di Se isn't a perfect film, but I believe it ages decently. BTW you should checkout Kannathil Muthamittal. It's arguably Mani Ratnam's best after Iruvar.

This is review from an independent and feminist perspective and I love that, but I rank this movie in Shahrukh's top class like swades or kabhi haan kabhi naa. And songs...they are memories of or childhood/adolescence.

This is a great format and way to literally RE-view!
I follow several channels and RUclipsrs who do video essays wherein they do cathartic analysis that covers symbolism, the underlying currents and breakdown of the bits and easter eggs on display that are surely interesting to realize later. More power to you lady!
As for everyone who's getting butthurt, please try and expand your palate to understand that there are several ways things can be done and if someone is presenting something new, either get out to begin with or broaden your 'comfort zone' as there's a lot that you're missing out on.
This is HER perspective. Agreeing or disagreeing is up to you and that's fine but just don't simply say that since it's great, it's automatically flawless and can't be faulted.
Peace, Love & Strength to everyone!!!
    Cheers!

Dil se is a masterpiece its a hard-hitting movie..SRK was too good as usual but I loved Manisha the most her looks act innocence.. loved her totally... Prity did her part well and she went to become even more successful den Manisha, but never looked so beautiful and innocent like Manisha in her entire career.
**Special mention to SRK and Manisha's conversation in desert(Ladak) planning future /kids...love and that terrace scene

    1) Sucharita admits that she did not re-watch this movie until now but It seams like her views are from when she saw the movie as a kid. That's unfair since the kids loved masala movies back then (Soldier, Dil to pagal hai, Dulhe Raja, Badshah, Sajan chale sasural etc)
    2) Why Dil Se was way ahead of it's time: Look at the hit (shit) movies during that year: Karan Johar, David Dhawan, Abbas-Mastan were top grossers (98.78% of Indians like those movies).
    4) Look at the bunch of actors introduced: Raghuvir Yadav, Aditya Srivastava, Sanjay Mishra, Piyush Mishra, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Shaad Ali etc.. who all made big now.
    5) Last one: 98.78% Indians sill believe that fairness creams work. They have been testing the 14 days fairness challenge from last 28 years.
