Metalcore bands tend to sound like different variants of whatever band had success the previous year. Outside of a handful of interesting records, you'll mostly never encounter anything of originality or ambition. This new sound isn't a massive breakthrough but it's definitely a step in the right direction imo. I'm glad a band like Architects are willing to break out of their formulas and take their sound into a new stylistic direction fully aware of the reaction it would recieve.

  • @naysaya2935

I like it, It's different for sure I do think there's room for adding more unique and interesting elements to the songs as some tracks definitely feel a lot more straight forward than you'd expect from Architects and I don't just mean I want them heavier. Imo Be Very Afraid, Burn Down My House, New Moral Low Ground and Deep Fake are the standouts. Doomscrolling is actually growing on me just cause I think It's catchy AF. I'm looking forward to seeing them in Dublin next month with Biffy. 7.5/10 from me for the album. Great reaction man! I do think you should give the record a couple repeat listens I think it will grow on you a bit.

Bands evolve and change their sound as well as experiment. Keep an open mind. Repeating a style will get repetitive and will at some point get stale. So they have fun experimenting but it's all in everyone's taste.

I don't think they are trying to do what any band is doing in particular. They started writing this album right after they finished FTTWTE, to me it feels like the last two albums have just been Architects writing and trying a bunch of stuff and finding their new sound. When you listen to what they've said in interviews I think that's probably it. I've heard a bunch of cool ideas on a the last two albums but alot of meh stuff too. What I'm really excited for is what they release in a couple of years after they've toured these albums. I expect we will get something alot better, with more direction, and it will feel like they've found their sound. But thats just speculation

For Those That Wish to Exist I think is better tbh. I actually heavily disagree that that album is not cohesive. I really dont why you'd have that thought, feels plently complete and cohesive to me. This new album actually feels way more like a collection of singles to me, and this feels less authentic. Stuff like Dead Butterflies had emotional weight to it, this album has When We Were Young which is the most cliche title to a metal/rock song I ever heard. I'm convinced that this album was made just to cash in on their impressionable fans and is lacking soul, and authenticity.

I was sitting here prepared to hate every single song, but at least I enjoyed a few of the songs. If they can mix it up more and make it heavier I think they could totally pull this style change off. They could also use a new approach to their lyrics because those lyrics are a bit too generic and kind of cringe at times.

Personally my problem with this album, as is a lot of people’s, is the fact all the songs kind of blend together. Nothing here is ‘bad’, and the songs individually are great, but as an album it’s very repetitive, with the singles and Be Very Afraid being the obvious high points. Overall for me it’s a 7/10, a meh. Nothing offensive, just nothing great.

  • @WastedLight

after 8 metalcore albums, I'm sure you would want to experiment as well. Personally, I'm starting to find metalcore very boring. Just the same song and dance. This has depth. Undertones. Intricate details behind the relatively simple structures. I personally really enjoyed this album and ordered the vinyl. Burn down my house, be very afraid, and the singles are my personal favorites, but the other songs are still pretty good. I find it best to treat this band as if they only started with holy hell as it's more fair to the current lineup. 7.5/10

I can't say if it is good or not. Only thing I know for sure, is that I was bored like hell on the 5th song already. It seems that all songs are on the same ground. the tone, the guitar, the lyrics. Nothing that really stands out. It doesn't fit Sam voice as far as i'm concerned.
I mean, I was a massive Architects fan since Hollow Crown. Their writing, both instruments wise and lyrics wise, was absolutely flawless for me. Tom wrote about so meaningful themes, politics or philosophical. Now it really seems like a teenage pop rock band. Just look at the past two albums : "I feel like I'm drowning in water", "I swear i'm okay", "let's all be very afraid" and so on. Nothing really deep, apart from one line here and there.
Just read any lyrics from Holy Hell or All our gods or Lost forever lost together. This album can't compete even a little. Same as for the riffs : nothing is even remotely on the level of Hereafter or Gravedigger.
I get you want to experiment something else. And I love when band do that. Bad Omens, Falling in Reverse, I Prevail. Good for them and they nailed it. Architects ? They don't put two and two together. Their mathcore was on another level. Even last album, song like Animals, it was the way to go. Vocally, as I said, Sam don't hit home. Noah from Bad Omens or Ronnie from FIR are made for the music the band produce.
I get it, Sam is drown in nihilism. He can't stand the state the world is in. He hates his past, his blegh, and he hates the people that don't think like him. He loves to post shitty stuff on Instagram about being leftist (something along the line "you can't be on the metal scene and lean right"). Architects lost itself for me and went all mad about everything. Too much resentment in Sam's life.
Tom last couple of songs from Holy Hell was about redemption and finding the way. He wrote about hope being a prison previously, and that line had me chilling everytime after his death. He then wrote "If hope is a prison, then maybe faith will set me free ?" He helped me so much to see what's good in life. It really was a cure. Because his lyrics spoke in a way that reach my unconscious.
Any way, tha'ts just the way I see things. People will find the lyrics are deep or that the instruments are insane. Good for you !
Sad to see a good band sink into the abyss of nihilism. Album should have been called The Classic Symptoms of Nihilism. Architects should put themselves together and stop beeing whiny like teenagers. This album lacks maturity for a band that has been around for almost 20 years.
As far as i'm concerned, that just leaves room for other band to take Architects place (Currents for number one !). Everything has to end, i'm not even sad or mad. That's life. And I've done my grieving.
Let's just be happy for what comes next from other bands !

I'll write in English because i don't know Russian, if I understood correctly...well they tend to lose their heaviness because they aren't angry teenager anymore, and as they stated on Instagram (and other socials too I presume) they are trying to showcase their emotions (even anger) by not just screaming like they have been doing, but trying to express it in a more artistic way I guess(?).
