dragon age is gonna flop. even when you were able to control them they were still pretty dumb and needed micromanagement. Now you're not gonna be able to. I can already see the short vids of people filming the AI companions getting stuck on everything or getting the player killed for funny and stupid reasons.

That era has always been around dude. You kidding me? 40 years ago we had Jaws sequels, nearly a dozen Friday the 13th sequels, Halloween sequels, a Scarface remake, Ghostbusters sequel, so on and on.
While this has been an issue throughout history, it's become more abundant now. Why? Movies/games cost too much, and the economy isn't doing too hot. Thus, companies become a lot less willing to take risks, and become more homogenized, to try and widen the audience for a movie.
It’s because as much as capitalism in the modern age can churn out art, it also plays it too safe in order to prioritise profit. Like the commenter above mentioned, it’s easier for art companies to produce something safe and regurgitated than risky and original.
counterpoint: a lot of the great golden-age simpsons episodes were ripping storylines off other shows. 1990/2000s tv is entirely chock-full of them. I reckon they could save more than a few TV/movie IPs by just recycling old scripts and changing the characters, as long as it's not from the same series (see terminator dark fate) you should be fine
The fact that the new Dragon Age is going to be a dumb down version of what it should be isn’t the surprising part; it is the fact that people think this is the same BioWare that made Dragon Age: Origins. We should expect the worst from BioWare or did we forget the last game they made was Anthem.
Kingmaker reminds me of some older movies like "The Final Countdown", where an aircraft carrier gets transported back in time to 1942 before the Pearl Harbor attack via a wormhole/storm in the Ocean. Basically the technology difference of fighter jets vs propeller planes. I miss movies like this, making people think and a focus on philosophy, etc. I think Kingmaker has more story than they are letting on, or at the very least can be greatly expanded-on. They have some quick-scenes showing a fleshed out future world in the trailers, we'll see!
The thing is that WB has so many IPs with DC that you could make into smaller games made by indie companies. A game like MGS based on Vigilante, an ARPG based on the Seven Soldiers of Victory, a first-person cowboy shooter from the Rough Bunch. There are SO MANY DC properties you could hand out to make smaller projects to garner positive brand attention.
I wouldn't call Postal a good movie by any means, but at least it's entertaining. I'll give that one movie to Uwe Boll. Borderlands is bland as fuck all.

Dragon age origins was one of my favorite games growing up cant believe they been moving away from that with every release. One thing i couldnt stand in acquisition was getting rid of heals and instead use those shields to prevent damage instead. I love traditional party style games. Where you have your guys who take the hits, ones who dps/cc, and one that heals. Pathfinder kingmaker was good, divinty games were good, pillars of eternity were good but i didnt like not getting xp from kills. Funny how all those games that stick to more traditional styles with their own twist on combat seem to be more legendary. I mean look at bauldurs gate 3, easily game of the year lol.
well pillars wanted you to explore and interact with quests, npcs etc so I actually like the move rather than murderhobo your way through. I do agree with you that the old system of classes where healers, tanks etc were a thing and you SWITCHED around among chars depending on what you needed makes for a better experience. Maybe they are afraid that the tictoc generation will be to dumb to do anything without guardrails...or they just lost all the skilled devs and are stuck with crap who can't do anything thanks to DEI.

FYI, if you think Kingmakers is a good premise, there was a pretty good anime that came out w/ a similar premise called Gate. It was about a magical gateway appearing in modern Japan that led to a D&D style fantasy world. Japan sends its self-defense force to investigate the other side, which leads to the SDF using modern weapons to fight dragons & medieval soldiers.

They actually made 4.4 million against their $150 million budget because theatres take 50% of the ticket sales. That's why movies need to pull in at least twice their budget to break even.
let's be real they didn't want to put in player controlled companions for dragon age because it's an easy way to cut development time, the only thing 'complicated' about it would be trying to think of more than one playstyle for the player.

Ash already did the Kingmaker film, its called Evil Dead 3 :) Baldurs Gate 3 was very complex with an entire party that you controlled, and that game did amazing. I would say Dragon Age is just too complex for the developers to make.
Borderlands 2 released a trailer for the release of its VR version. It includes an actress playing Maya, and it honestly looks better and more authentic than anything in the movie
unpopular opinion, I hate when games gives you the option to change character like in dragon age (thats why I stopped playing it, too much management and options) So I really liked that change on the new one
that view point is moot when you do not have to swap characters.. i only play as my character in all the dragon age games but why remove a feature that adds layers and depth to the gameplay? the more layers and depths the better.. you want to change something that negatively affects other people even tho you were not being negatively affected by it makes no sense buddy

To be fair, I never switched characters in the last Dragon Age. My character was broken and essentially immortal. All the party members were far too weak in comparison to ever want to switch.

I never liked dragon age because of the multi party system. So I think Joe is wrong with this one. I tried to play the old ones and it just felt clumsy and annoying, and I'm no stranger to RPG's and turn based, origins did not resonate for me.
All this means for Dragon Age is that the player character is going to be a jack of all trades no matter what "class" is chosen.. the PC will be able to handle any and every situation by themselves and the party is just there for extra DPS...fn sad man

Im already counting myself out of the online mode. From the time that GTA IV's online mode and when GTA V came out, I played online that whole time. I haven't touched GTA 5 since 2014. No way Im gonna like anything they do with that part of the game. GTAO is for a completely different audience at this point.

You only control your character because they're using the same engine as they are for mass effect and they can't be arsed to tweak it for dragon age.
Dragon Age playing only 1 character makes sense seeing as the game is no longer tactical/strategic, its full on action, which sucks.

While this has been an issue throughout history, it's become more abundant now. Why? Movies/games cost too much, and the economy isn't doing too hot.
Thus, companies become a lot less willing to take risks, and become more homogenized, to try and widen the audience for a movie.
It’s because as much as capitalism in the modern age can churn out art, it also plays it too safe in order to prioritise profit.
Like the commenter above mentioned, it’s easier for art companies to produce something safe and regurgitated than risky and original.
counterpoint: a lot of the great golden-age simpsons episodes were ripping storylines off other shows. 1990/2000s tv is entirely chock-full of them. I reckon they could save more than a few TV/movie IPs by just recycling old scripts and changing the characters, as long as it's not from the same series (see terminator dark fate) you should be fine

The fact that the new Dragon Age is going to be a dumb down version of what it should be isn’t the surprising part; it is the fact that people think this is the same BioWare that made Dragon Age: Origins. We should expect the worst from BioWare or did we forget the last game they made was Anthem.

Kingmaker reminds me of some older movies like "The Final Countdown", where an aircraft carrier gets transported back in time to 1942 before the Pearl Harbor attack via a wormhole/storm in the Ocean. Basically the technology difference of fighter jets vs propeller planes. I miss movies like this, making people think and a focus on philosophy, etc. I think Kingmaker has more story than they are letting on, or at the very least can be greatly expanded-on. They have some quick-scenes showing a fleshed out future world in the trailers, we'll see!
The thing is that WB has so many IPs with DC that you could make into smaller games made by indie companies. A game like MGS based on Vigilante, an ARPG based on the Seven Soldiers of Victory, a first-person cowboy shooter from the Rough Bunch. There are SO MANY DC properties you could hand out to make smaller projects to garner positive brand attention.
The lesson to be learned by the gaming studios that failed this year: listen to your consumer a.k.a. your gaming community.

Dragon age origins was one of my favorite games growing up cant believe they been moving away from that with every release. One thing i couldnt stand in acquisition was getting rid of heals and instead use those shields to prevent damage instead. I love traditional party style games. Where you have your guys who take the hits, ones who dps/cc, and one that heals. Pathfinder kingmaker was good, divinty games were good, pillars of eternity were good but i didnt like not getting xp from kills. Funny how all those games that stick to more traditional styles with their own twist on combat seem to be more legendary. I mean look at bauldurs gate 3, easily game of the year lol.
well pillars wanted you to explore and interact with quests, npcs etc so I actually like the move rather than murderhobo your way through. I do agree with you that the old system of classes where healers, tanks etc were a thing and you SWITCHED around among chars depending on what you needed makes for a better experience.
Maybe they are afraid that the tictoc generation will be to dumb to do anything without guardrails...or they just lost all the skilled devs and are stuck with crap who can't do anything thanks to DEI.

If BioWare says they have learned what they’re good at and are sticking to it. Isn’t somewhat safe to assume that the talent has changed significantly since the last game? It makes sense if that’s why there’s a change this significant. Everyone says this isn’t old BioWare and then complains when new BioWare shows what they’ve been working on. I think changes like this are to be expected tbh.

FYI, if you think Kingmakers is a good premise, there was a pretty good anime that came out w/ a similar premise called Gate. It was about a magical gateway appearing in modern Japan that led to a D&D style fantasy world. Japan sends its self-defense force to investigate the other side, which leads to the SDF using modern weapons to fight dragons & medieval soldiers.
The tank thing has been done in an old twilight zone episode. Where a Stuart tank and its crew to back to the lil big horn and custers last stand

They actually made 4.4 million against their $150 million budget because theatres take 50% of the ticket sales. That's why movies need to pull in at least twice their budget to break even.

Baldurs Gate 3 was very complex with an entire party that you controlled, and that game did amazing. I would say Dragon Age is just too complex for the developers to make.

unpopular opinion, I hate when games gives you the option to change character like in dragon age (thats why I stopped playing it, too much management and options) So I really liked that change on the new one
that view point is moot when you do not have to swap characters.. i only play as my character in all the dragon age games but why remove a feature that adds layers and depth to the gameplay? the more layers and depths the better.. you want to change something that negatively affects other people even tho you were not being negatively affected by it makes no sense buddy

He wants to press a button and get an effect that triggers his serotonin. Instant gratification, no challange.. push button.. feel good

To be fair, I never switched characters in the last Dragon Age. My character was broken and essentially immortal. All the party members were far too weak in comparison to ever want to switch.

I never liked dragon age because of the multi party system. So I think Joe is wrong with this one. I tried to play the old ones and it just felt clumsy and annoying, and I'm no stranger to RPG's and turn based, origins did not resonate for me.
All this means for Dragon Age is that the player character is going to be a jack of all trades no matter what "class" is chosen.. the PC will be able to handle any and every situation by themselves and the party is just there for extra DPS...fn sad man
