Australians need to take note of places like Baja in America. The 4wd community were faced with losing their tracks and camp sites until the 4wd community started banding together and people named and shamed the idiots. The tracks and campsites are pristine now every vehicle has a spare wheel bag and there’s no rubbish. They knew that if it was allowed to continue they would lose their right to access those areas. Don’t be intimidated by these clowns speak up if you see it and let the whole world know if they are grubs.

Totally agree mate. I’ve always followed the mantra “leave nothing but footprints”. Really angers me (especially as a landscape photographer) when I find a beautiful spot only to find some rubbish left by people - was at dunes north of Jurien Bay and found a decent spot for photography with a lone tree sticking out of the dune. At the base of the tree we’re an empty beer can and bottle. I couldn’t clear them as that would have left footprints in the sand which would have ruined the shot. Really pees me off when we have the most beautiful pristine environment and it’s ruined by thoughtless, selfish people. Keep spreading the word mate 👍

Couldn’t upthumb this enough! Good on you Paul for focussing on this tissue issue. If we all left camp sites better than we found them the environment would be pristine for all to enjoy, instead its just those who have respect cleaning up after the sloppy dogs that leave this mess behind.

I'm from Victoria and I used to trail bike ride alot. I cannot count the times I would pull up to a remote river site and see not only toilet tickets and rubbish everywhere, but disposable nappies disgustingly thrown in every direction around the bush. I do not mean a couple but a lot,it's absolutely a disgrace how people treat our beautiful landscape.

I filmed something similar in the exact area a few years ago. Same thing. Tickets and rubbish dumped all the bush up the back there. Nothing will change. Nothing has changed. I pushed pretty hard trying to put the message out. It falls on deaf ears. It’s a shame. Camping has become too big for its own good with too many folk with no idea (and no desire) to camp with respect. I’ve mostly given up on free camping spots and have gone back to camping in mostly Hipcamp and paid areas as I would rather exchange a bit of noise for not having to see this anymore. It’s cool to be able to say “we’re free camping, we’re so remote, no ones around”, but it’s not worth the aggravation anymore. Also why I’ve been camping 3 times this year and have lost my drive.
I applaud you putting it out there though.

I had similar incident in my home town. We had a bullride event. And initially I thought is was awesome to see our sleepy town full of people spending money. But then I realised most of the money was spent at travelling traders at the showgrounds. But the worst thing was the next day. We have a beautiful waterfall and swimming and picnic area just on the edge of town. And because lots of the visitors went there as well they turned it into a freakin garbage tip. I literally nearly cried. Some humans need to lift they're game or stay home.

Im from jurien bay and we had a shack at sandy cape until the shire in its wisdom decided to demolish them all in the name of saving the dunes, they then bulldozed the dunes and put a road into it so the perth masses could destroy the place. What was our free, beautiful, quiet little place is now a trashed overcrowded payed camp. The truth is the problems start as soon as the city folk move in not a popular opinion but the truth. Have seen the same thing all up and down the coast and it creates a lot of animosity amongst rural communities. So just remember when your camping in areas like this that its somebodys backyard and treat it as such.

I used to be a Ranger until i retired recently and i actually know where you camped (its one of the more popular sites on the river, and its always a lot of fun during the Easter LWE, some people have been going there for generations). Honestly people need to take ownership back, work with DBCA (DBCA are not the enemy here), and build a community, because as you said If you don't campsites will get closed.
I actually closed a campsite not far from there, it seemed to be only frequented by males in there jacked Patrols and Landcruiser's, they used to leave all there rubbish behind, would cut down trees to build themselves individual camping areas, there was always a fire going (even during summer) and these fires were always smouldering Monday morning. No matter how polite i was in pointing out the issues i was ignored. So, i took a grader to the campsite and ripped it and the access track all the way back to the main road. No more access. I walked in there years later and nature had reclaimed the site.
The Forests and Gazetted Recreation Reserves are for the people, they are there to be an asset, they are to be enjoyed, our management is vitally important (and that includes everybody who uses them), we are the custodian's for future generations.

Its a sad state of affairs that people even need to be told because its such simple basic common sense to clean up your own shit let alone remove any trash you find.
Ive seen my fav spot trashed so many times its no longer a fav and i have cleaned up so much crap its just become ridiculous!
Worst one i came across was about 150 empty bottles and cans along with a trashed hatch back . . . .
There has been a renegade laying spikes regularly which hasbruined a lit of probably decent folks tyres over the years. I can understand why the renegade does it but its not the right approach at all.
I dont think there is any real answer besides calling out aomeone if you see it happening, but that risks personal safety big time cos there are too many nutters out and about theae days.
Even making people pay wont work because then they think they have even more rights to do it.
Shutting them down is probably the only real option sometimes.

I just continue to do a clean up when necessary

I think there was a whole industry in getting certain types of people to move from V8 utes to modding 4WDs and bush-bashing in them. Those people have no interest in nature and care little for how they affect other people. They don't care if these sites are lost because of their actions

Mate, same with some people who call themselves fisherman. Don't know how many times I've rolled up to my favourite fishing spot to find rubbish, cans and bottles, unused bait rotting in the sun, used plastic bait bags and heaps of ciggy butts lying around. To take the cake the last time I was there, a crude fire pit had been made by people the night before as there was scorched grass and ash. This is in a public park 3 klm's from the Sydney CBD. Cleaned it up of course, but that's not the point. Only a matter of time until the local Council bans fishing altogether in the area. The Council cleaning crew rocked up while I was fishing and advised it's a regular occurrence.

Parks and Wildlife need to be a lot more pro-active as well in enforcing the rules which these grubs break on a regular basis . I have even seen what you would expect to be a respectable family as in “ young parents with 2 very young children in tow “ cut down trees , use native wood in there campfires going outside of the provided fire pits ,disposable nappies left in the bush etc etc . Not too mention the large groups of usually P Platers and there obnoxiously loud 4 WD’s blaring “ doof doof “ music all day long and half the night . Here in Qld ,parks and wild life do not do absolutely any thing about the problem , especially since they implemented the on - line booking system …. what a joke that turned out to be . Ghost camping is a huge problem in Qld and nothing has or will be done about it . I for one am thinking of selling all my camping gear , just had enough of these inconsiderate morons .

The other thing that will happen is that prices will keep going up for camps as those in charge have to spend more to clean up these messes.
One place we go to now is $51.50 per night. It is a great camp but it's a fair bit of money to sleep on the ground imo.
