Deep Woods Camping & Finding a Cessna 414

  • For this backpacking trip, we hiked into the Cranberry Wilderness in search of a twin engine private plane that crashed in 1995 and went missing for 6 years, deep in the forests of a remote West Virginia mountaintop. There was also a hiker who went missing here back in 2011.
For sleep and shelter, Frank and I both decided to pack in our Amok Draumr Hammock camping systems. This would allow us to get a comfortable camping setup even if we were forced to camp in one of the mossy rock fields that are often encountered along mountain ridges in the Cranberry Wilderness. (scroll down for gear list)
On the morning of November 28th, 1995, a Cessna 414, tail number N28901 took off from Braxton County Airport in Sutton, West Virginia headed for Lynchburg Regional, Virginia. After encountering low visibility due to foggy conditions, the lone pilot contacted air traffic control to request an IFR (instrument flight rules) flight plan in order to continue navigating the approaching mountainous terrain. After a period of apparent poor communications, possibly due to a radio issue, ATC lost contact with the pilot. Transponder signals ceased not long after the last communication, and the plane was never heard from or seen again until it was spotted from the air six years later.

Setup camp along the District Line trail
This is not an established campsite, but it’s the best clearing we found along the District Line and is also about as close as the trail comes to the crash site located about 1/4 mile downslope. There is room for a couple hammocks or tents. There is no reliable water here, so we packed it in. We did stumble upon a small creek further downhill while searching for the plane, but it’s not listed on maps and I can’t vouch for how often it’s actually running.
Bushwhack downhill about 1/4 mile to find Cessna N28901
We found that the debris field location differed slightly from the NTSB report. We found what appeared to be the initial impact sight at N38° 20.073′ W80° 16.845′ , and the fuselage at N38° 20.009′ W80° 16.783′

I incorrectly stated several times in the video that the plane was missing 11 years. It was found in 2001, so it actually took 6 years to be discovered. The missing hiker remains unfound to this day. As does my Garmin GPS, which I fatefully left at the Big Beechy Trailhead upon leaving. I was still able to put together some GPS info for this trip using screenshots of the coordinates on my GPS, but it sure does seem like the Cranberry Wilderness isn't fond of having it's secrets recorded...

I did a solo trip back there this October and found it. The coordinates I used were also off. I came in from the bottom of the mountain. I used the county line trail, then bushwhacked to the plane. I made my way off the mountain and followed the big Beachy stream to the middle fork trail. It was a 21 mile haul. It was also my first solo trip. I kinda agree with the others about how now there is going to be more attention drawn towards it. But I understand that everyone has the right to go find it. It’s certainly a diamond in the rough. Mad respect to the man who found it. If you ever need a backpacking partner when you are in cranberry just shoot me a message.

I enjoy watching your plane crash site videos. It's a little hard knowing that someone passed away in the crash and I send out prayers to the families and friends affected. 🙏 When we went to Seneca Creek not too far from there a few years ago we saw a plane crash site, but decided not to walk up next to it. I did take one picture. It was easy to find because of a well used trail was leading down to it. Thanks again for taking us along on your adventures!

Quite kind of you to remind these men of as we now know ,absolute trouble out there in the form of many different forms, literally take your pick. Where you gentlemen were at today is border line where the sasquatch people send their ones that are inbred, or deformed due to chemical ingestion from both or one parent. The result is always the same retardation , you will always be able to recognize these beings, they will be misshapen face or body unable in some cases to cloak and seem to have a craving to examine humans, not real sure if it is out of curiosity or just being retarded, either way it usually ends in death for people, these things i know from close interaction with a clan living on my property for over 100 years. In the last 20 years we have around 60,000 people missing and completely unexplained all lost in federal land . and state parks very few from private property. For the last 15 years i have been asking them if they had any idea what happen to all those people, it took many years but an elder told me the truth, one that around during the civil war they live up to 300 years. Like with all people they are not without their share of problems, trust me when i tell you their are a lot more of them nationwide then you can imagine, at least 50 thousand or more just here in the states, they live everywhere but africa, it's a secret each time i ask why , or they make up a story, it can't be because of predators, there is not an animal on this planet they can't kill with their bare hands, that friend is a hard cold fact, based on what i have seen them do they are as strong as front end loader with a back hoe, that's not from eating good food either because purebred sasquatch do not eat food, something else i know about them they get all the energy they can handle from the structures they build in the forest, some for nourishment others for healing, the structures channel the energy to them from the forest and earth , how ? these creatures use 75-80% of their brain we use 10% it's all about the brain the most powerful weapon in the entire universe, they claim they have lived here for 1.5 million years, living as one with mother nature and the universe, i can tell you what each structure means , the giant X means WE LIVE HERE, TREES DO NOT NATURALLY GATHER LIKE THAT EVERYWHERE. SASQUATCH CAN AND WILL EAT FOOD BUT NO NEED TO ,this is how they become so powerful , they can at times create a shield against bullets, only the really powerful males can, this is why we never see them eating in the wild or any remains, don't know what this dog man is but it is real sasquatch can tear one in half

Great new video. I was excited to see a new one, as I have watched all of your hiking vids, and some more than once. As I have said before, I am a retired English teacher who is not a camper. My idea of camping is my little cedar chalet in the Smokies with electricity, cable TV, internet, and a hot tub! I am amazed that I enjoy watching your videos, and my husband is even more so. I do like nature though, and enjoy talking some short, by your standards, nature walks. I came upon your vids by accident, while falling asleep, waking up, and finding them playing on RUclips from the old Roku TV. I was hooked. I've watched a few hikers, but yours are the best for me. As for this video, of course I enjoyed it, and feel that you are always respectful when you come upon these tragic sites of life lost. I feel anyone who is wiling to do the work to find it, as long as they are respectful, why not and why nor share the information? You aren't doing anything wrong, and your vid led me to a quick prayer for the pilot and the missing hiker. Stay careful, and keep sending out these great videos. I would love to give you a little extra support in some way, but I am not a camper, so won't be buying that sort of equipment, though I am thinking of getting one of the small saws just to work on some fallen logs on my Smoky Mountain property. I'll think of something. Maybe a gift certificate to packet gourmet or something? I love these vids and would love to support more of your trips in some small way. Any way I can help, let me know.

I have never heard as little forest sounds as you can find in the Virginia's. So quite it makes for a really creepy experience. Add some humidity and huge huge bugs and I decided to stay out west for all my hiking. Maybe the humidity masks sound? Perhaps?

If this is the aircraft I remember I think it left Braxton County Airport in West Virginia heading to Virginia. There was a long standing reward for finding it. It had only the Pilot onboard. The man who found it was denied the reward for some reason. He had searched for it for over a year. As a charter pilot in WV I had over flown this area many times, bad place to go down. I could have sworn it was a Cessna 340 but it might have been the 414.

Hey, Sintax 77! We watch almost every evening. Enjoyable!
Might I suggest an external microphone? The mic on your camera has to be directional because it is so muffled unless the camera is pointed directly in front of you. An external, omnidirectional mic could make a huge difference . . .

Great place to find "ramps" - a local food delicacy. Sorta cross between an onion and garlic, grows like an onion with a bulb in the ground and kinda blade green tops. I know people that go in that area to find them,....also ginseng.

I know I'm a bit late, but the interference at 11:01 is a single frame of the crash report tossed into the video. Ran the video at 25% and spammed the space bar to catch it on screen. It's super blurry, but enough can be made out to see it for what it is.

From looking at the NTSB report, they had to comb the area and find whatever individual gauges they could salvage for readings, and some weren't found for readings at all. No mention of a large scale removal of parts, so it seems like that front end got seriously fragmented coming through the trees.

"Middle" could have been written during original assembly. Long ago, an old crash investigator observed that "planes are designed to fly and they do it very well. They are not designed to crash, and they do it very badly."
