I've been taking these videos and the newsletter very seriously, and in these 6 weeks I have found the strength to forgive and reach out to my birth-mother whom I haven't spoken to in 14 years. We met for coffee yesterday, and yes it was very awkward. No matter what the future has in store, I did the impossible and the trajectory of my life will forever be altered by that. I share this personal experience with you as thanks - for I don't think I could have done it on my own.

My grandmother taught me how to sew. Recently she passed away. Overwhelmed by grief, I thought I sew something to honor her. Needles to say without her being next to me helping me the blouse I wanted to make didn’t come out the way I wanted. Next day I purchased more material and tried again, through a lot of frustration ready to give up, but my determination to accomplish something difficult was worthwhile I wanted to succeed, it was not only for me but for my grandmother. I could feel her spirit guiding me, after over a month of trying, I finished the blouse. I must admit some of the best moments usually occur when you find yourself so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. The optimal state of inner experience is so enjoyable that hours go by without noticing. It was impossible to stop whatever activity you are immersed in awakens something hidden far away in the depths of your soul.

    This topic is really eye-opening
I had to think and truly ask myself, "Do I do this? Just give up on things? I don't think I do..."
But I realized that I do. Maybe not in an obvious way in the front of my awareness, but I do. I have given up on things I wanted to pursue, with an "excuse" as my defense
I'll take time to ponder this more 😊

Here is the fullness of the Thoreau quote mentioned in the video for anyone interested.
"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things."
I think Thoreau may be suggesting that the source of desperation comes from superficial sources. Decisions made in error, preoccupations that lead to desolation, or even spiritual deficits. A willful separation from God will inevitably lead to suffering.
I like what Accepting the Universe says - when something is within our reach but we resign to failure, we find desperation.
But this never ceases to amaze me: the tenacity of the human spirit and will. It's incredible.

what does resigning to failure mean? and how does it relate to finding desperation? I'm just pretty new to this, Thanks.

    • @BeingArtful
      @BeingArtful 3 месяца назад +4

@@macalagayjeromekerseyb. Hi there! Accepting the Universe refers to the desperation that comes from failure from things in our control- for example, a failure with practicing a virtue. So say for example you were practicing the virtue of patience with someone in your life who creates chaos and you kept failing at being patient with that person. Instead of persisting with fortitude and being patient, you succumbed or resigned to your own failure in that regard. That may lead to a kind of desperation.
Another, maybe more obvious example may be when someone is struggling with an addiction. They experience desperation when they cannot overcome it.

I have stopped the practice and sold the equipment today. I practiced for myself only, doing quite noticeable amount of work. What caused me to give up is the world around me, which is not under my control. I do not have neither the sufficient funds for necessary additional equipment, nor the freedom of movement to actually practice. What a great video. I highly agree with everything said except for the language learning example which I think might be non ideally chosen for what it is supposed to bring across. Ultimatively the essence of the video is:
    1) Do labor for the sake of labor and not for the fruit of labor following the traditional stoic practice of caring only what one has control over.
    2) Related to 1) consider what IS in our control should be pursued through failures even amidst hopelesness.
Both points of which are great timeless advice.
However, the language learning example threw me off a little bit because it goes against "An unexamined life is a life not worth living". I believe the point to be made was that without the burden of deadlines and exams the process of labor is more enjoyable and more fruitful. Out of personal exprience I can vouch that this is very much so true. But the example of "living in a country and picking up a language" is like "being in the sun and getting tanned". There is nothing intentional about it and because of that it could equally be something negative that one picks of over the years such as a bad posture from sitting too much. I would have liked an example more that emphasized something intentionally done.
Either way. Thank you for the weekly videos and giving us something to think about for free

This actually applies perfectly to cold approaching women or strangers in general. To some this might seem like a shallow endeavor, but for me it's one of the greatest fears a man can face in his life. When you approach someone you consider attractive and have an as genuine and outcome-independet intention as possible, this helps a great deal and not only rewards you more often than not in a "practical sense" but also with dealing with so-called "setbacks". The friendly conversations and gratitude I often receive from the interactions alone are proof enough to me that it is all about the action itself and not what might follow after.

They will be creeped out because only creeps do this. It's not flattering. It's predetory when they can't leave the situation. Never corner a woman, you will immediately become unattractive. They might be scared. Love cannot flourish when someone is trapped and scared.

Strange... Fully get what you said, this understanding comes naturally from the inside but my mind cannot stop generating questions that also put me in wonder. These questions are the ones that I always find myself raising. Would those failures be signs/ways of the universe saying to us; "hey, this is not your intended path, you should be doing other things, not this one, so please stop doing this." Because I also agree that mastering requires practice but to some degree, it should be a natural, effortless practice, like a river, it should flow. I'm not saying it should be easy but hope you get what I'm trying to express. Maybe it's just a simple illusion of the mind assuming we have options. That's why we develop a shallow threshold that eventually leads us to give up on mastering.
Nowadays I've been thinking of themes like surrender, acceptance, and gratefulness. And again thank you for the perfect timing!
    All the best!

If I may, something I noticed reading your comment is that you are looking at the universe for signs/direction while simultaneously saying that we have options. Also, practise is not always easy, smooth or a linear process. It can be grueling learning a new language, or a new skill. To use an example - if you've never played the violin, your first few weeks are going to be painful on the ears, on your self confidence and possibly even your wrists/fingers. Does this mean that it is not worth doing? I think not. Let me know if I misinterpreted your comment, but I thought I should share my opinion.

I always thought that the gates should open like a dam after some time (It's not a rule of thumb, by the way). If I dare to dig a little deeper into my words, there lie topics like obsession with sureness, lack of dedication and patience, fear of making "mistakes", and maybe a monkey mind that causes confusion. Then there can not be something different that creates resistance which creates the desire the movement to something.
That's lonely to me. Yes I know that it can also bring great unity as well. But how special it feels on every level to desire a desire that refuses to be bound by limitations.
How cool would it be to desire which to me is a degree or aspect of Love that never gives up and transverses the Multi Verse and in and out of Time for that Love or for thwt Desire.

Currently dealing with this in a physical way. I used to be very into the gym and even became a personal trainer. Then i herniated a disc and was not able to continue seriously or do what I wanted to do. However i have been avoiding exercise even in places where i am not injured, and this is not an excuse, I should accept my fate and adjust my expectations but the lost potential hurts and makes one bitter.

This can be hard when you are cog in the machine. I don’t mind practicing the craft but to convince others of value to do said craft is an entirely different matter. Especially in an overly saturated, volatile, exploitive market. I’m doing a career switch not because of the craft but because people aren’t hiring or posting ghost jobs

Its my Hope that we will never forget why we choose life.
    The very existence of life it's self is best described at a Poet;
I ran across this saying today here on RUclips and so I wanted to share it with you. Because it is the most accurate formulation of words that can describe the WHY of all existence.
    It said:
He stared at me, as if I were the most Dazzling Star in the Night Sky...........
    So I Kissed him Passionately,
As if He was the very Breath that fills my lungs.

Your channel is a blessing! Could you please tell us why you chose to name your channel Accepting the Universe? The plain meaning of lt is very apparent to the rudimentary knowledge but, I'd like to ask if there's a personal story behind it? You always relay your interpretations of philosophy and subjective opinions as a form of experience that you must have gone through at some point in your life. I'm 23, I grew up with one absent parent and one neglectful parent because of which, i never learnt to be courageous or to trust myself in difficult decisions. Your words render the reassurance i never got from anyone in my life. thank you.

Well ,a person doesn't practice their livelihood ,for the journey of it. Some people don't have any other opportunity, at the time (once it was a good opportunity to fit them). Of course, when a farmer's crops fail , it is horrible (especially when they have done everything correctly).
Frankly, I don't know how reading great academic philosophy could help them. They are the tough ones. They are the survivors, not people who only write about pain etc and don't really experience it (were these philosophers you speak of farmers?).
Many of us live lives of quiet desperation. And it's not that great, especially when you can't find hope, or gratitude sometimes. But, at least you aren't without safety, or food. I see your point though, that you need to practice something and can get better, and you must find happiness through other ways.
I just believe your choice of an example here was poor and I don't really get your argument here. Nevertheless, I do enjoy listening to your discussions here. You have a calming way about you and sometimes I learn something.

i am my favourite musician and i don't really care how that sounds, but I have quite honestly put in about 20% of my available effort. I am SO incredibly stunted. I cannot stand when people say they tried their best. Did you really now? Because I bet your best would be astonishing...
I expect myself to be the next DaVinci... Maybe i should start with basic fuckin hygiene.

I need a word of wisdom from you if you ever read this comment. I happen to delay my education for several reasons, but now I’m back at university studying archaeology and unfortunately that means I will be graduating at 28 years of age. I’m in an environment where people graduate much younger, including all my friends, which undoubtedly makes me feel less, and I’m reminded by this fact every passing day. I’m terribly sad for myself and it makes me question my self worth. Somedays the guilt gets harder where I can’t bare living. Is there ever a timeline to every station in life?

@@acceptingtheuniverse It’s more of an issue regarding close people’s perception of me. Embarrassing to admit but they’re quite smart people which means their view on me weigh heavily, I can’t help it, I grew up trying to live up to other’s expectations. I now don’t meet any of them for this exact reason, in solitary I don’t judge myself as much but the struggle is still lingering. Brilliant video however, I’ve watched it awhile back. Thank you a lot and I apologize if my ignorance was irritating.

Hi there! I was rewatching this video tonight and came across this comment. Usually I don't reply in other's comments but I want to share this as your elder sister.. only you & your perception matters. Other's perceptions on you or your life no matter how wise or close they are do not matter. If you focus on others or age or anything else you will not gain anything at all.. so please focus & give your best in your studies & have confidence. If you have some purpose & goals just talk about that.. write about that.. pay attention to that.. and no guilt okay? It's your life. So be healthy & achieve your dreams. Become the person you always wanted to be.. my best wishes for you. Good luck brother 🙏 ❤

"unfortunately ... I'll be graduating at 28 ... where people are much younger" -- Why "unfortunately"? I finished up my undergraduate in my mid-forties, and went to grad school and completed my masters at 72. I never thought much about age, and never acted "old", but just as another student -- and that's how I was accepted. I give my age as 24 (in fun) because that's how old I feel I am, in attitude and outlook. At 28 you can be as old or as young as you choose. Keep your sense of humor and you'll always be young.
