My first car was a 4 door 79 Chevette I purchased second hand in 1983 when I was 19. It was very reliable and was fantastic in the snow. I kept it for several years and still wish I had kept it since it got good mileage and wasn't a money pit for the few repairs it needed. The only issue I had with it was that it was under-powered but it did what I needed it to do.

My first car was a red 1976 Camaro with an automatic and a 305. The body had huge Bondo patches in it but the interior was flawless. The seating position was PERFECT. Outward visibility especially with those looooong doors and windows was some of the best I have ever seen.
It had a 2 barrel carb but with thick spacer plates between the carb and the intake. Despite being the lowly 305 V8 it was actually quick. The engine had a broken bolt forever bouncing around the crank case. It is STILL running today and STILL has said bolt bouncing around the crank case.
Light weight. That Camaro weighed well less than 3500 pounds it actually handled very well. I would LOVE to have a 1979 Z28.

    My cousin bought a new 79 Camaro with a 305 , 4 speed on the floor ...
He was in the US Navy & found a 69 Charger with 20'000 miles on it .
But he could'nt afford both & asked if I would buy it but I was 16 yrs old working part time .
But he priced the Camaro so low my folks co-signed for me and put $1000 down for my graduation that was still 2 years away...
The Camaro only had 6400 miles on it because it set most of the time.
In 1981 , I also joined the Navy & as luck would have it , I ended up on the same carrier ..
We would see each other on occasion , but probably not as much as you think ..
At one point we got leave at the same time & followed each other home for Christmas.
About 30 miles from home & a couple miles before our exit off the interstate , I kicked my Camaro down & went past him doing a hundred easy ...
But he wasnt havin it & punched that 383 and just as he caught up to me , a state trooper did a Smokey & the Bandit u-turn across the median & pulled us both over ..
    He was very pissed ...
Pulled both of us out & hand cuffed us .
As we both leaned against my trunk hand cuffed , I said it looks like our leave will be spent in jail...
As the cop asked questions he soon realized we were cousins , both on the same carrier & both on leave headed home for Christmas ...
Luckily , he had served in the navy during the Viet Nam war ...
The trooper asked what our jobs were ...
He thought it would be cool to work the flight deck & I told him it was ..
He calmed down after a bit , but told us just how stupid we were.
He dropped our speed to 85 mph so we didnt get reckless ops on our D.L. and let us go...
We got home , washed our cars , put on a clean Cracker Jack uniform & went cruising our home town..
P.S. , girls loved guys in uniform who drove muscle cars back in my day . Lol
Thats my 79 Camaro story ..

The 79 Z28 with 3.73 gears and 4 speed manual cruised at 62mph with the engine racing at 3000rpm. This pretty much limited any extended cruising to about 70mph max. At least this was my experience. A five or six speed overdrive transmission would have made it a lot more practical on the highway.

@jason9022 Available for Cars? Wikipedia and other sources say they were in the market in 1982, and Pioneer / Sony (depends who you believe) introduced the first (car) CD player in 1984. Further in 1987 the Lincoln Town car was the first with an OEM CD player. The first (if not among the very first) commercial pressed audio disc was made August 17, 1982 - and Ironically it was a 1979 performance by Claudio Arrau. Japan and Europe's history with CD players starts in Oct 1982. Basically, every source I could find, point to no availability before the summer of 1982 in a commercial way at least. That is not say that the technology of CD players & discs and even video discs were not invented before those dates - as I can find references to Video disc / Early DVD working in a lab as far back as 1970.

They sold me a 1980 Chevette Scooter in 1983 for $3,200.00 it had 29,000 miles on it .. they told me it was a 1981.. I later found out that Chevette Scooters list price new was $3,200.00 plus the battery was junk. I raised some hell in the show room and they gave me a new battery .. woop woop .. glade both of them have manual transmissions..
Parked the Chevette with 179,000 miles when it rusted out ..

I bought a new z-28 in 1981 the last of that body type. GM had so much pollution junk on that car, it was so slow. It had a 350 but only 175 hp and really don`t think it was putting out that much. The reason i say that is my 1970 chevy stepside truck only had a stock 250 straight six motor three on the tree and would outrun the camaro from a dead stop.

      @kennethsouthard6042 4 года назад +3

As bad as the Vega was mechanically, to me it had really nice style to it, especially the early ones. They were cool when you swapped in a Buick V6. I did see some people do small block Chevy's in them but you pretty much made it nose heavy and had to change out the rear end. I think the V6 was the better swap unless you were going to make a drag car out of it.
The Chevette didn't really have any style at all.

I bought a '71 in '77. I think I only a it for a few months before the aluminum block finally gave out. The Vega resembled a smaller Camero but the engine was crap... used so much oil I used my father's used oil just to be able to keep oil in it. Finally took a girl out in it and evidently didn't put the oil cap on good enough and lost it while on the date. Used an old shirt I was using as an oil rag to temporarily cover the missing cap to get me someplace to replace it... the cam shaft grabbed the shirt and wrapped it around itself.... I used a pair of pliers to grap the shirt and had my girlfriend turn the engine over as i pulled pieces of it off the camshaft. Got it running again and took her home.... later, I took the valve covers off and got rid of the pieces of buttons... Didnt last much longer after that, lol.... Ahh, my first car...what crap!

A Z-28 with T-tops would've been the ultimate, but a Chevette with the right options ("High Output" engine, standard 4-speed manual transmission, sport suspension) would've probably been more actual fun. Especially given the gas crunch halfway through the model year.

How awesome! When I was a kid, we had a 1980 Camaro like the silver base model on the video..silver with red interior..I mean it looked the exact same as the 79 really...My parents bought new from Ferman Chevrolet in Tampa,FL in 1980...No power options as dad said they always broke and in the 80's GM cars nothing was more true! I remember learning to drive on this car..It was FAST..305 V-8 4 Barrel carb..Mom sold in 1991 with only 88,000 miles...as I had a 1984 300ZX that I loved ...I hated the Camaro as it had no gadgets..Now, I wish I had the old Camaro as it would be worth much more than any 84 300ZX would be now days! I do recall the Camaro being very unreliable..We had a lot of issues and my parents were both older, mature drivers so the car was always adult driven..The shift interlock or tumbler or something like that went out 3 times..you could not turn the key or shift out of gear..3 times!!! Crazy..RUST...HUGE issue..water leaks inside due to rust on wiper area..( We were in FL not north!)..I guess the 80's were bad for American made cars!

Yeah I think they got that spec wrong in the vid. After the demise of the 250 6, they used either the Chevy 229 or Buick 231. I've never seen a 4.1 in a Camaro.

It's telling when you can hop in a late model 4 cylinder Camry and blow the doors off these '79 Camaros while using 1/3 the gas. My V6 is even faster than a 66 Camaro SS.

@Justice Boofer A '79 4 cyl BMW made these Camaros seem fast. 12.2 seconds to 60 vs 9.4 for the Camaro Z28. Only the 4.1 Camaro was slower at 13.1

By this point, the front end grille and headlight bezel styling of the camaro was 6 years old and was just a slight update to the 70-73 camaro's front end styling and thus looked horribly out of date especially when you consider that the Firebird's nose had been significantly updated and made more modern looking multiple times by this point. The monza sport hatch front end previewed the look of the next gen camaro and was a far better looking car all around. Of course, the underpinnings of the Monza were from the Vega, so no matter what, you can't win.

Went to an 82 Trans Am, traded to a 83 Trans Am 25th Anniversary Daytona 500, then an 89 IROC-Z, and a bunch of trucks. Best to all. Ooorah!

In November of 1977, I walked into a Chevrolet dealership in Houston, and ordered a 1978 Z-28 from the factory. It was maroon with a tan cloth interior from the Camaro LT. I chose the gold striping, adjustable driver's seat, rear window defogger, and radio delete. I chose not to get the T-Top, as it was a dealer-installed option, and was known to leak and rattle. Drive-out price was $7,750...$223.94 a month. I loved that car, but build and finish quality were abysmal.
