Great Question!
The most common type of color deficiency is inherited as red-green color blindness (otherwise known as Protanomaly and Deuteranomaly). In these color deficient patients, the M and L cones are altered in such a way that there is a greater amount of difference in color discrimination along the so-called “confusion line” for that individual. This means the the difference between red and green wavelength color signals overlap.
The Enchroma lens technology selectively filters the precise wavelenth of light in the "confusion line." By blocking the line of confusion, there is greater perceived separation between shades of red and green.
Enchroma glasses are not able to address trianopia, which is reduced discrimination between blue and yellow shades of color. Fortunately, tritanopia is much less common than red-green deficiency.
