I remember going through College without ever seeing the red dot that Professors use on the laser pointer. Whenever they say “this part that I’m circling on.” and I always try to ask my seat mate what exactly is the Prof encircling. 10 years later I come to find out I’m colorblind because of a pre-employment physical.

I had the same problem it was so frustrating not being able 2 follow the lectures correctly. I am attending a medical faculty and whenever we would have lectures where there were cell's shown under a microscope, and get this the cells are usually colored red, blue with a green, ghrey ish background also they are round and clumped together.... sooo basically whenever the cell's where shown i was taking a colorblind test.
Funny thing is my mate is also colorblind but he didn't know that he was. So the 2 of us thought that the laser pointer was broken and that the professor just didnt notice. So a week later my buddy and i learned that he was color blind like me and that the laser pointer did in fact work..

Surprised and confused here. My understanding was, “colorblind” people can see all the things, but they have reduced ability to discern between some colors. I’d have thought you would be able to see the laser dot, but wouldn’t be sure if it was brown, red, or green. 🤔

When I was teaching physics during the light portion I would always project several color blind test circles and ask the class if they could see them. One time a boy said there were no numbers and the entire class was trying to tease him. I gave him a red filter to look through and for the next five minutes he put the filter in front of his eye then away from his eye. He did not believe nor know that he was colorblind and he was a senior.

Severe deuteranopia and I've purchased a pair of indoor enchroma glasses and a pair of pilestone glasses with lens B (that's the one their test said would work for me. Materials definitely goes to enchroma, the frames and lens material is terrific. Function goes to pilestone. With the Enchroma glasses every now and then it seems like I notice the color of something I would have ignored before, but that could just be because I'm looking for colors. The pilestone lenses make everything pop. As far as empirical data, with the pilestone glasses I can pass colorblindness tests with ease, but the Enchroma glasses have the same results as I show without assistance.

  • @YBIagent

With mild deutan, as does my granddad & brother, I've compared both brands. Enchroma aced it, Pilestone was okay, sort of somewhere midrange. Comparatively, Pilestone seemed to sort of neutralize a lot of colors, but highlighted red & orange, some greens a little. [Stop signs turned orange, however, which I didn't like so well.] Enchroma's enabled me to see true orange for what it is, not a dirty mustard yellow, highlighted greens amazingly, reds too, inclusive of blues. (A color I saw well before but even brighter now.) In all fairness, it did also cancel some other colors as well, like brown & gray, which gray is a shade, not a color in any case.
Pilestone does enable clear visibility of the Ishihara plates & cancels-out the invisible/reverse test plates designed exclusively for color deficient ppl, like me. *Noting, those specific plates are a qualitative, not quantitative unit of measure as not all R/G deficiencies able to read them anyway.
Prior to this, I'd always presumed it was a B/Y CVD as I'd suffered a severe BTI/concussion 23-yrs. ago. Until last year, I used the Ishihara concise ed./14-plate book only to discover my granddad is also the same way & more recent, my only brother is also this too. Go fig!... We're all mild cases of deuteranomaly.

It could only be corrected afterwards with a dedicated software on the raw image. Same goes for our eyes. So as long as there is nothing that repairs the receptors in our eyes or we get a chip in our head that corrects the incoming signal: colorblindness can‘t be undone. But that‘s what the glasses are advertised for. If they would say the glasses enhance color contrast everything would be fine … but no one would spent 300$ on this anymore.

I love when you put the two pairs across the color-blind test - the 8 and 5 (I can't see either number w/o the glasses). The side-by-side with the two manufacturers does help, too.
I wonder: Does the filtering quality stop working as well over time? I've had a pair of Enchroma for several years and it just seems they aren't working as well as when they were new - or am I just used to them?
One thing many may not think of: Just because someone can now see color accurately - since you've never known what color "something" is, you may now be seeing it accurately and simply don't know what it is! Don't know if that makes sense but it sure is something I've experienced - I can tell a color is very vivid and different than I've ever seen but sure don't know WHAT that color is.

I know a lot if people here are looking for the effectiveness of the glasses and not the quality. I have the pilestone pair and they make the colors you can't see pop out. They don't make you see the world in a special way and just allow you to distinguish the different colors. So I wouldn't really recommend getting them unless you have strong colorblindness. They have a red hue and aren't really that cool to look through because it dulls all colors.

I only use the word scam, as all companies involved in marketing these products put out misleading information of what the product is supposed to do and reference studies with clear conflicts of interest. You are lead to believe that you can “see new colours “ or “see colors correctly “. All that can be achieved is the removal of information or “filtering” to boost contrast in some areas, and that’s fine, but that is a trade off for colour accuracy and diminished brightness.

Hi mate, i've tried my test in enchroma and it says moderate deutan, more red than green cons. But when i checked the glasses, they are like sunglasses with dark lens. I want something that people will think it is for bad vision with more invisible lens. Is there something like that? Or is there is lens that u add to ur eye, for example green len that works, instead the red, which is visible to people? Thanks.

Just do the poly drop test. It makes a very distinctive poker chip sound vs any other material. Or take a metal PD stick along the bevel as another more destructive option. I personally think the drop test is safer for the lens.

Amazing question! And yes! I have several patients who have had it and I have many good pictures. I will see if I can bump that up on my video list. If it is chronic, as it sounds like it is in your case, injections do often help, but some medications for high blood pressure, Prolensa eye drops, and even melatonin supplementation has been suggested as additional treatments that can help (but it is important to discuss these options with your treating physician). Also, you need to avoid oral or nasal steroids, and consider reducing stress if possible.

Whether or not I can pass a color blind test, doesnt matter at all. I have not tried enchroma, but I have pilestone and they work well.
