I knew places throw stuff away, but throwing away pets?!?!?! That is so wrong. Just label a cage: free. Someone will happily take it

I honestly thought everyone knew this happens. I've been working since I was 15 and my first job ever at dunkin we would get fired if we dared to feed the homeless for free. What we would do is at night when putting all the donuts in the garbage bags we would somehow mark the black bags with the donuts in them and not mark the ones with actual trash in them so technically we wouldn't get fired cause we're doing out Jon by putting the donuts in garbage bags and putting the bags out but the homeless just "decided" to get into the bags lol it worked 100% and every night nothing went to waste thanks to me and my co workers doing that , the homeless would wait for Me and my co workers to lock up and walk away at closing then they would cross the street and take the marked donut bags , win win for everyone
Ex Dunkin employee here also!! Whenever people were coming within the last few minutes, I’d sneakily give away a few extra things, because they were about to be thrown out, or I’d tell the homeless to meet me by the dumpster where the camera couldn’t see, and just conveniently have meats and and stuff that I’d just cooked ready for them
I didn’t wanna have them dig through our dumpster, so I’d make sure I could hand it to them without them getting in that nasty heckin’ dumpster

The only problem I have with dumpster diving is the lack of research happening with the products they are getting. Some of those products have got thrown away for a reason, most likely because of recall due to health concerns.
I dumpster dive and I can tell you it’s not usually because of a recall that something gets tossed. Most produce I find is packaged-bags of apples, oranges, peppers, onions, or potatoes or cartons of strawberries etc. usually you will find one or two in the bag that has gone bad so the store throws out the entire bag. This has consistently been the case for the four years I have been diving.
@@Sullivanin many fruits are not safe to eat if they are in the same bag as one that has gone bad tho, even if they look fine
@@mariakan1598 one bad fruit can make the other gone bad faster before it arrive at the costumer hands but these diver ate faster lol. Just be careful with wet food like rice and meat even though it was a frozen package food.
@d b does not throwing away something you paid for and getting something from the trash that could be contaminated with God knows what sound the same to you? To answer your question , had I paid for a whole bag of something I would probably not be throwing it away, I would discard the nearby potatoes and the rotten one. I would not pick up something rotten from the trash tho. If you think this is privilege, sure. Generally almost everyone is privileged depending who you ask.
@d b It's the same as bread. If one slice gets mold, it's better to throw all the slices out cause it's not always visible in the first stages. I've tangerines catch mold from ONE tangerine with small mold spots in 2 days.
Sometimes the frozen foods are thrown away for a reason. Like recalls. Always a good idea to double check if your food findings have been recalled recently.
Yeah, also, when will the signs for the recalled gummies at ikea be put away?? XD
Yeah, if I whole big batch of frozen pizzas were recalled cause they were found to cause poisoning, the people who "salvage" the thrown-out pizzas are probably risking poisoning their family and friends.
Yeah some of that stuff there diving for might not be good anymore
or their power went out and they thawed and refroze. that is a risk too. if they aren't expired there is probably a reason they were dumped
Yes, and if they take them they should not donate them to food banks. It should be a at your own risk and not involve other people.
DISGUSTING!!! All of that so called "trash" could've been donated to various shelters and dropins.😡
EXACTLY!!!
As a person that's had food insecurities at a few points in my life, this level of waste is really upsetting
yes!! right now at this present moment i dont have any money left and im out of food (until next pay) so im hungry and it makes me sad to see this
I've never risked going hungry, thank God, but even I'm so devastated to see this. I didn't know companies wasted so much perfectly good stuff!!!
“Food insecurity”. 😂.
I agree. This level of food waste is disgusting, especially considering how many people in America are starving. They should give away food like this or sell at a discount. The Target one with all the pizzas was horrible... also, the Whole Foods one is sad because people who are struggling might not have access to nutritious food.
Even if you've never experienced a need for food, it's heartbreakingly disgusting, knowing there are so many starving people and families that the wasted food could feed. That's how you know it's intentional because it should be illegal to throw away perfectly good items, including home decor!!!
Just ran across this video. Regarding throwing away food, when I worked at Starbucks we would give away our food that was expiring that night to customers so we didn't have to throw it away. One day someone threatened to sue us because he said they got sick from a pastry that they took. They made a huge deal about it. After that we were no longer allowed to give away the food that was expiring. We would donate stuff, but the shelters would not always come in to pick up our donations so again it would get thrown away. It sucks that companies throw away food, but sometimes one person ruins it for everyone.
You’re right, that’s really sad.
That's the reason why alot of company's don't donate anything
This. Also why companies cut and destroy things before chucking.
Much like how used safety gear that’s worn out and no longer safe is cut up to avoid people using unsafe gear.

Also heard about a pub that started selling the vegetables seperate from the meat to cut back on food waste that was getting backlash. I worked at a pub for awhile and it was _common_ for people to just eat the meat and barely touch the vegetables. Buying the two things separately would have totally helped cut back on food waste. Granted this method wouldn’t be useful for stores cutting back on their waste, but it could be useful for cutting back on other types of food waste.

@@LeticiaSarabia-yb8dm Not everyone has that choice, I was a homeless teen and had to live off of whatever I could find. There are ways to know which foods are safest, and what to look out for. You can probably find ppl/groups that share such information online now days.
So while there is some risks, you can do it safely. Ppl get sick from food they pay for at restaurants and grocery stores all the time. Also they are made to throw away perfectly good food for various reasons, many foods are good for a long time after their lable dates but legally have to be pulled off shelves as soon as it passes that date. In many things like canned foods those dates are just there so that ppl will have to buy more, I have eaten cans of food that were 20 years past their use by date...and the only issue was that the taste wasn't so great after that long. Eggs can last for months, longer if they are farm fresh and unwashed. It really depends on the food and how it's packaged...also outside temperatures.
Realest. But some of it might be thrown away for a good reason, like if the food is rotten.
Are y’all forgetting about the supplies?!? in my childhood it was food or laundry detergent, most food banks can’t give you boxes of soap, bbw can! This stuff is essential and dose not expire…they just throw it out!!! There isn’t any reason toilet paper should be thrown out instead of donated. That’s what makes me mad.
When it comes to the cold food, just because it feels "cold" does not mean that it is still safe to eat.
Frozen and refrigerated foods need to be below a specific temperature to be safe to eat.
From my experience working at a convenience store, sometimes problems arise where an entire stock of frozen/refrigerated product must be thrown out due to it falling below the safe temperature. (Ex: if the power goes out and the fridges/coolers stop working)
Dumpster diving doesn't bother me, there's alot that goes to waste that could be used or donated.
But when it comes to cold/frozen foods, please do not give that to other people. You have no idea if that is truly safe to eat or not. Unless these divers are bringing a thermometer with them to guarantee that the "still cold/frozen" food is actually cold/frozen.
Can confirm as well. When I worked at CVS, we had our freezers fail overnight twice and had to toss all of the frozen foods in them the next morning. It was upsetting, but it has to be done because it's not safe to eat at that point. It's inevitably going to still be cold, as long as the freezer wasn't opened, but that doesn't make it safe to eat.
@Amarianee my store had a similar issue a few months back; luckily, it occurred during store hours where we had enough employees to help.
Our store has these metal covers that enclose any open coolers (any cold food display without a door), so we rushed to put those out. Luckily there was a few coolers/freezers still working, so when we ran out of the metal covers we filled shopping carts with frozen food and zoomed them to the nearest working cooler until everything was full.
It was crazy how a good portion of the frozen/cooler section of the store just quit working. Luckily, we were able to get someone to come fix the issue before any food went bad.
But this is just one of many examples that lead to a huge loss of perfectly good food :( Sometimes, our equipment just fails.
Dont dumpsterdive for frozen/cooled items kids
I was literally thinking this the entire video- I was like ‘That doesnt mean they are safe, they are thrown away for a reason.’
yeah, it could be that they got defrosted by a power outage, and by the time you find out about the outage, the electricity was restored and the food frozen again. I have thrown meat that ended up like this b/c my house had constant power trips.

@@Lese203 I hope something changes about that. Someone needs to get fired, or prosecuted for animal cruelty
I work in a pet store in Australia and this is not the practice here! If an animal is sick they isolated from the other animals, depending on the condition they may be sent to the vet or we can treat them in a staff only area. Even for fish we have a medicated tank. Because new fish are brought in from an outside supplier sometime they bring parasites or diseases with them so we treat the fish tanks often to keep them healthy. They're also broken up into several units so any contaminated water would not affect the whole supply. We once had some baby mice and over the following week we saw that two of them seemed to have a birth defect, so my colleague adopted them for himself and they are living happily with him.
It's horrifying that there are places that treat living creatures as purely a means for money, thankfully there are also many places that do the right thing c:

I used to volunteer at a homeless shelter & the kind owner of our local Krispy Kreme Donuts would take the shelter at least 10 dozens donuts at least a few times a week. He would close the store around 11 pm & would drive across town to drop them off. He is an amazing sweet human being ❤
That Petco manager didn’t even seem shocked that the bird was in the trash. I wonder how many times they’ve done this. This is the most disgusting thing I’ve seen

You be surprised how hard it is to donate food. I've tried on several occasions. Fresh watermelons, cases of ice cream, grapes, etc... straight off a delivery truck. The reciever states overage, misloaded merchandise, etc... Then the originator won't pay to have it hauled back. Only once has the food bank taken anything. Thankfully I was able to help find places & individuals to give this good quality food too. Otherwise it would've been thrown in the trash! The ice cream incident took 20 runs in my car loaded front to back, floor to ceiling, including the trunk. To find homes for it all. I had to eat the cost of the gas to deliver it. Not everyone has the time or can do that.
This saves those companies from lawsuits when someone gets sick from the food.
@@laerramarie2620 I get that but it's easy to inspect it and find out first what is still good and what isn't. We have technology now to avoid that

Aren't stores losing money by not just selling them at a discount? I also think people and business owners should be moral, and not just greedy for their business so much.

What a lot of people don’t understand about giving food away at the end of the day is that a lot of places you can’t. I worked at dunkin and I asked the same question in 2018 about the donuts. It’s because if we go and donate these donuts and say someone gets sick, they can sue dunkin and other restaurants for giving them “bad food.” The donuts used to be donated but people ruined that for themselves when the started to sue these companies claiming the food was old and made them sick. All for money. I mean it makes sense. Why have one meal when you can sue and get a bunch of meals instead. But for reasons like that is why they no longer give away the donuts. I used to pack like 4-6 dozen donuts and give them to friends when I would get off of work though.

“Eating out of the dumpster isn’t always safe”… the amount of germs in there is more than you could even imagine
yes although i think this video wants to send a different message. This can be avoided with better management or be used for a better purpose, example: call someone from a food bank and collect the products while still on the shelf / edible instead of just disregarding them heartlessly
Most products people pull are not only still in airtight sealed packaging, but they’re then but in a sealed trash bag. The food itself doesn’t come into contact with the inside of the dumpster. As long as you spray the bag with disinfectant before opening it, it’s fine.
Also, food poisoning can happen anywhere. I’ve gotten food poisoning from going out to eat at restaurants multiple times. Also cooking food mostly kills any kind of bacteria, no matter where you get it from. If you think dumpsters are breeding grounds for bacteria, you should see slaughter houses and meat packing plants. Really gross stuff.
AND lol aside from the fact you are willingly eating food that shares space with human feces and the like, you have no idea if that 'sealed' candybar (or whatever) is even safe to eat to begin with. If it was recalled usually the store is told to toss it out after documenting how many are being disposed (to be credited in replacement). While that is rare, it does happen.
My pastor went to a Tim Hortons once and asked for any of the donuts that they were throwing away to be donated to the church to feed the bus kids the next morning. Many of these kids live in poverty and the church is the only meal they see on Sunday. The employees said they were not allowed to do that then threw away the donuts in front of him. We live in a seriously backwards society. Feed the impoverished, homeless, and hungry!
That just encourages people to not pay for things. The only backwards thing about this country is poor people being allowed to have children and not being able to afford them.

As a former CVS employee, I never saw perfectly good products being directly thrown away, but I did see a lot of perfectly good products being taken off the shelves. When CVS changes inventory and no longer sells a product, the ones that can't be sold are stored in the back room to be damaged out of the system. I thought they were going to be sent back to manufacturers or distributors until I saw my manager processing "damages" and throwing them away.
it never made sense to me. I only damaged items that were broken in a way that they couldn't be used or wouldn't be sold. A small hole in a bag of toilet paper isn't a huge deal and if it were ripped too bad we'd just write it off as store use and put it in the bathrooms. There's no reason to throw that stuff away
100% agreed
A grocery store I worked at would have a group come by to pick some up for donation, and people could dive in their dumpsters. That was... until some employees started to "expire" foods on purpose(mark perfectly good food for trash or rip a hole in the packaging, etc.)so their friends/family would come by to get it. To prevent more theft, they stopped allowing the dumpster diving. It only took a few jerks to ruin it for others.
Perhaps employees wouldn't feel the need to do that if they were paid a decent salary.
@@emmasilver2332 Then it would be a good idea to at least paid employees in those products they throw. Some businesses do that.
yeah, it's sad
Used to work at a little Caesars, instead of throwing away the left over pizzas I’d bring them to the gas station next door or drop them off at the local woman’s shelter- it was disgusting how much pizza and bread that would get thrown out
Back when I worked at Little Caesars, which was my first "real" job, employees were allowed to take the unsold pizzas home at the end of the night. I guess other locations were different, but mine was real good about this.
That is so much waste I can't even wrap my head around it. I'd dumpster dive JUST to reduce the wastage if I lived there. This is pathetic. Damaging and ruining items before throwing them away just so no one else can have it, it's extremely selfish.
They do that to avoid getting sued. The divers don’t know why it was dumped (could’ve been recalled, contaminated, etc.)

To put a Smile on Children and Adults on Their Faces when they are going through some of the Hardest Scarcest Moments in their Lives, Would be such a BLESSING! Or even pack up some sets of stuff to take to a Pantry or Food Bank. Sometimes they even get to know when the Birthdays are and for something like that would be Amazing!!! It was for us when we went to One and they knew it was My Little Guys Birthday. Especially During the Pandemic.
There is definitely valid reasons for throwing mass items away but there are also many things thrown away for no reason. It's hard to tell why something have been thrown. But it's just heartbreaking to see so many things regardless. Good for the divers 💕
the only valid reasons for throwing mass items from my perspective, its because something was bad with the product since it was made, if the reason is its expiration date, its no a valid reason, because that just means, you made more than you needed, it makes me sad to see so much waste. greetings from Mexico :)
Some could be inventory write off for taxes...

I worked at a grocery store and whenever we found a warm package of meat in the pasta section we would put it in a "throw away" bin that was refrigerated and once we wrote it off we'd throw it away. Just because something is cold or even frozen don't assume that it has always been that way. It can very well be that the food items were left out to get warm and have grown bacteria. Don't risk getting yourself or others sick, not worth it.
Imagine getting contaminated food as donation

Learning. Growing. 🌱 maybe yall need to finally realize stuff is generally thrown out for a reason.
It’s sad these stores are throwing this stuff away instead of DONATING it!
This is dangerous, there are sometimes serious recalls for a reason and stores are forced to throw things out. Also I worked at a store where there was rat infestation and droppings were found, you just NEVER know why things are thrown out sometimes. Be careful and be informed!
I'll never understand why this form of theft went viral over ten years ago. This is illegal and very dangerous. There really needs to be standards and this needs to be seriously stopped. These people are all rushing their lives for the thrill of an easy steal.
Exactly and since stuff is thrown away because of the recalls, people that do this need to be careful all that looks good always isn't
I understand what you're saying, however oil, candles, carpets, furniture, be serious man .... anyway, all good. I get your point. Let's say there is a safety concern on a product, the supplier should organize a collection and either use the parts for making new stuff or recycling it responsibly, by dumping it into the trash won't make the environmental chain better. Peace
yeah its important to exercise some caution and be aware of recalls. thankfully everything is on the internet now so its easy to know which foods are being recalled. youd probably have most safety with sealed foods because they are sealed so they wouldnt get contaminated by outside factors.
That’s what I loved when I worked at Panera Bread. They let the employees take what they wanted from the baked goods and breads left over at the end of our shift (they have a baker come in every night and bake fresh EVERYTHING). And everything left they donate to homeless shelters. They were doing it way back in 2005 when I worked there
I just worked for them they still do
Thank you. It's shows that it's possible so why don't all businesses do it?
I just wish they’d put them in something other than a trash bag😅 our food bank gets them and we have to peel apart the frosted things to put them into peoples boxes
As a former bath and body works employee, please don't dumpster dive behind their stores, the only thing we throw out is broken, mostly used or critically damaged products, anything else gets sent back to distro for recycling. Fun fact, you can't throw away chemicals (it's actually illegal) like that and if they are throwing away chemicals then contact the store manager and inform them the employees are not following practices.
Than you for actually knowing what you're speaking on.
As a former Sephora assistant manager, I back this.
I also worked at a bath and body works before and I can also confirm this is correct.
Why would they arrest someone for saving animals cruelty neglect in dumpsters!?
I am absolutely devastated and mortified by all these animals thrown away..... this is absolutely appalling. Same with all the food. My heart breaks.
I know that regardless of the warnings some of you guys are gonna try this anyway. PLEASE check the laws in your area to make sure you won’t get stopped by the police and get into trouble before you go and do this. Luckily the cop was nice

Some department stores used to cut up clothes before throwing them away. Just to be sure no one could use them. Ridiculous wastefulness
I think it's pretty irresponsible if a food bank takes food that came out of a dumpster, not knowing if the food is even safe. Meat or dairy could have been returned and spent hours in someone's hot car, followed by hours in a cooler before being tossed out.
That’s very true
You have no idea on food transportation.. just say it. :) (before Walmart unloads it’s refrigerated trucks.. they usually call for the unloading crew.. which can take a few minutes to 20.. and the trucks refrigeration units aren’t always up to code… the food everyone buys full price from the shelves.. they’re told “get it into the cooler fast” this was the case at the Walmart I worked at locally.. as well as our target truck a few times.. which is why you can see “rotten” meat on the shelves next to healthy meat. But sure. Yeah, irresponsible. Hahahahaha
Food banks don't really take it from there they literally get food from people donating what's in their pantry or they go buy them if they do not take things that have an expiration date that's already passed
I work at a store and all our food returns get thrown away
This is a very privileged, American thing to say. People are disgusted that we eat 5+ day leftovers in my house. When you were brought up in another country you know better. If you literally cannot tell that food is spoiled then your parents did a bad job raising you.
I worked at CVS and we had to throw away carts full of candy and other items that weren’t even close to being expired. I asked my manager if he could donate it to my local church. He said, “it’s too much trouble.” Then he would lock the dumpsters. There was a lot of homeless people who would sleep in the back of the store too. When I quit I told my union rep everything he did, he was very lazy, and he was terminated. What upsets me the most is how they dump live animals. I foster kittens and found a momma and her one day old kittens dumped in an alley. I kept her, two of her babies and found loving homes for the others. We have to stop this. Dumpster divers are saving not only our planet but discarded animals. Thank you so much for having such a big heart.
When I worked at Panera Bread they would let employees take the pasties, breads fresh baked goods home every day. We would take home bags some days. Our family and friends enjoyed these and didn’t go to waste.
Here me out, I think it is beyond messed up to donate these found food items to food banks. Every individual should have the right to decide if they want to take the risk of consuming food that has been in a dumpster or not. And don't these people deserve better than what is found in a dumpster anyway? As someone who has relied on food banks in the past, I would be horrified to think I could have gotten sick and unable to afford medical care. I think this sort of information needs to be disclosed.
Agreed!
I think taking free food in general is very risky, you don't know if it has been poisoned or contaminated in some other way, dumpster or not, the risk will always be there.
Most of the food that is donated to food banks have been sitting in warehouses for months waiting to be picked up, if you look at the expiration dates some are very close to expiring and that’s from canned and dry goods that have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years. You never know what your food has gone through till it’s gets to the consumer.
Thank you I was about to say. I was like you don’t know if it’s good or not now giving to random people who already have too much on their plate
@@Phoenix.Sparkles true, but when you're hungry and ya kids gotta eat, you do what ya gotta do.. kwis? I absolutely agree with OP in that food from dumpsters should not be donated to food banks, but rather to individuals that are aware of the foods origin.

Seriously!! Im a teen, so I saved up a lot of money for a beauty product at whole foods. They had a whole bin of said product that had been out for like a month. Came back two days after I'd been there (still full bin) and it was pulled. 😕 same thing happened recently too. I figured it went home with the employees, didn't have confirmation until now 😂
Maybe it’s different owners/managers that have different rules to prevent people from getting sick and open them up to lawsuits
My husband had the opposite experience at Whole Foods. They almost fired him for taking a prepacked dinner they were shrinking out at the end of the night. The only thing that “saved” his employment was one of the prepared foods workers finally admitted that she told him to take it because it was shrunk out and would be trashed. He was still told to never do it again.
At mine we waste very little. Our ‘shrink’ is foods that are one-two days from expiring, (usually vegan meats that people don’t like the taste of), rotten fruits, and products with broken packaging. The one thing we need to waste less of is our fresh bread and prep foods. They throw it out quite a bit before expiry because they want “guaranteed freshness” just wish they pulled a Walmart and had a section of discounted foods about to expire. Other than that, it’s nothing like in this video.
I was a manager at Family Dollar and they would make us do the same 💯 Mostly due to products not selling fast so they stay on uboats in the back. As more products come in they zero out these items regardless of expiration 😮💨 At that time I was married and my ex father n law fed the homeless and I simply asked could I have him come pick it up yet was told I would be fired. Therefore I called him and waited to take trash out until he was onsite. I then sat the items within the mandatory trash bag and placed on very top so he could retrieve them. I gladly quit shortly afterwards I can’t work for someone who is inconsiderate to others in need!!!
Geeez why??! Fire somebody for helping those in need, so much logic

This is so wild. My mom when she was alive told me horror stories of her childhood having to dumpster diving for food talking about how shameful it was, and how she felt dirty. My mom's childhood trauma that she never got over is a good time for these folks.

My mom grew up very poor and had to dumpster dive for food to help keep her and her siblings alive. You do what you have to do to survive There is no shame in that. My mom was a strong and compassionate woman who always tried to help others and did so until the day she died.
As someone who works at a fast-food place; specifically McDonald's, there are reasons why food can be thrown out. At McDonald's, we're told to throw food after a certain amount of time has passed to ensure every customer gets fresh food. Employees can make mistakes and when taking out a tray of donuts, muffins or cookies we can accidentally drop them and obviously must be thrown out. From what I've seen this next example doesn't happen too often, but when taking a bag of fries from its box to put in the fridge the bag can break easily sometimes. Why were that many donuts thrown out, couldn't tell you, maybe I'm too optimistic but there was likely a reason. Them locking their dumpsters would make total sense, but purposely ruining good materials, clothes and stuff doesn't make sense. If a dumpster diver gets sick it's entirely their fault, but don't go and purposely ruin the food or what else further than it may already have been.
my boyfriend worked at Panera, at the end of the night they would donate majority of the pastries to an old folks home and the truck would come and deliver it to them. the rest of the leftovers would be taken home by employees and then the last bits are thrown out for a replacement of fresh food/pastries. but that doesn’t account for the accidents made during the work day causing food that is now not able to be sold.
In my teens, I worked at a locally-owned Chinese restaurant and we had to throw everything away. Owners were trying to avoid any lawsuits pertaining to food poisoning or anything like that.
Trust me, the quantities of food that we had to throw away; I never got used to.
it used to be like this i Scotland/UK but most stores now donate to food banks. I think it’s terrible when the police are called or the bins are locked away to stop people from being able to go in and take the stuff being thrown away. There is no need for anyone to go hungry 😞.
Just remember when you watch some of these channels on here, TikTok or social media, not all dumpster divers have good intentions, there’s one couple in this video who refuse to get jobs, rely on their subscribers to give them money, gift cards, buy them and their child whatever they want, they’ve had at least 4 gofundme accounts the latest on is to buy a homestead, well they ain’t buying the house they said they would but still camping out in all weathers with a child, their subscribers don’t see the neglect of that child nor do they see that by giving them all this stuff they are enabling them , just a couple of lazy scammers

As someone who went dumpster diving in Rockford as a child, it was scary getting stopped by cops. I was too poor to pay for permits, and so this was for survival.
Cops, businesses, and people should have compassion for poor people.
stores should have a clearance, clearance section
where when the clearance section doesn’t sell, it gets taken outside, but not to throw away, but putting it out there
and have people pay like $5 to go back there and see if theres any goodies
That would be beyond lovely
That's such a good idea. Or stores work with the resellers. Resellers are in charge of storing, but get the to be dumped items for free
Back in my dumpster diving days I would ask around at fruit and vegetable stores, to see if they had anything they were going to throw out. They usually gave me a box of stuff that was still good, but not fresh enough to sell, while giving a heads up about fruits and veggies that weren't good anymore.
there are already clearance sections for a lot of grocery stores, the problem comes for them with the “sell by” date to which the food may not be expired, but they are now too close to the expiration date for them to sell it as the food may go bad on the shelves and now they are in legal trouble. as well as contaminated food cannot be sold, so it needs to be thrown out. contamination can take out a whole isle, especially frozen food since frozen food needs to be kept at a certain temperature for bacteria to not contaminate the frozen items. so when power goes out and the frozen foods fall below a certain temp, that food cannot be sold anymore
👍🏻good job i hope it existed
I worked at Five Star Food services and lets just say I was sickened when we made sandwiches one day for the school boxes then were tossing them out the next because they had us make them too early so they were tossing them in the trash even though they were fresh and sealed. I once was on the streets and when you experience going hungry you APPRECIATE with what you get in life a lot more and start to see things a lot differently.

As someone who hates wasting food, it breaks my heart to see so many products in good shape being thrown out. You could donate it instead of throwing it out! That would prevent health issue too...
Many times it can look okay but not be okay. It happened once when I worked that a certain brand of baby food did a recall cause the food had been found by an FDA to have a malicious ingredient so they had to pack and throw it away. It may have looked fine in the trash but the baby food was actually damaged. So that’s something to keep in mind. Many places donate but I can’t talk of all stores
Theres Aare reasons Food isn’t donated. One is that the food could be recalled and another for legal reasons. Someone claims to get sick and you have a lawsuit. It’s a liability issue.
Sometime company’s throw perfectly good looking food out bc smth was wrong with the ingredients used. The milk could’ve been expired and they only saw after he cookies were baked, recalls, a bunch of other health risk things. It would be an even worst look if they sold or donated unsafe food.
It's cheaper to throw somethings away than face a lawsuit.
We throw away bagels at the end of the day .. we use to donate them but one person decides it's a great lawsuit for food poisoning and tried to sue us. It was costly and yes we won but now it's all trash and we make sure to mix it with coffee grounds and other trash to prevent dumpster diving
Seeing the thrown away baby food was heartbreaking...

I think it’s pretty common for people to share with homeless shelters. Believe me I’ve seen dumpsters overflowing with edible produce get picked up by garbage trucks week after week so these people aren’t hurting homeless people. They are keeping good food out of landfills.
just because people live in a house doesnt mean they cant afford food, also we dont know if they take the food home to clean up and give to family, friends or people in need. also why wouldnt you keep it for yourself? you need food and products too.

I almost cried when i saw the parakeets in the boxes sad
hamsters don’t go into hibernation. they go into something called torpor. which is more sudden then hibernation and is only supposed to last a few hours. a pet store would never get cold enough for a hamster to go into torpor. it has to get in low 60s Fahrenheit. and even when they go into torpor there’s many indications that they’re sleeping not dead. there wasn’t a mistake here. pet stores throw out animals if they have behavior problems or are sick/hurt. that’s just the sad truth. moral of story adopt instead of buying from pet store
@@sgg8505 omg same i would riot for that parakeet
Most likely it wasn’t actually the pet store throwing the animals out but other people abandoning them there, I have a sibling who works at a big chain pet store and has had this happen on numerous occasions, these people would rather risk the animals dying from not being found soon enough than risk getting judged from just surrendering them when most people would just be happy you realize you can’t take care of an animal instead of continuing to neglect them
NO, domestic hamsters CANNOT hibernate. When they get too cold they go into torpor, but they no longer have the hibernation ability of wild hamsters. Sometimes you can warm them up and save them from torpor with careful care, but most often it is fatal.

In certain places you can’t donate food. The lawsuit happy people ruined it. I worked at Target in guest service and it was sad what we had to throw away. Food and make up. All closed and sealed. But if someone returned it or it was expired it had to go in the trash. Also if the stores freezers or refrigerators go out it all goes in the trash. But too many people sue. It’s illegal to dumpster dive in some cities/counties/states. I knew a donut shop owner and he would take the left overs and donate them. But the people started complaining about the type and making requests of what to bring. Then someone got sick. Went to the ER. Tried to sue saying it was the donuts. And was insisting they settle out of court. He fought it and found out she was accusing multiple places and the ER said she had the stomach flu. But he no longer donates. After all the money he spent on atty fees and having the health dept on him.
My mom works at Walmart & negotiated with management & a local charity called Hope House to donate many of the items they can't sell & would normally throw away.
I worked at wally world and you guys would be surprised at what kind of things and how much stuff goes to our claims department to be gotten rid of. There can be a case of water with 1 or 2 bottles missing, a big bag of candy that has been accidentally opened by a box cutter, a case of roman noodles missing a few packs, cans that have fallen off the shelf and have dents in them, etc. that are thrown away because they are considered "unusable". This happens throughout the store with things such as diaper, laundry detergent, shanpoo/conditioner, a tube of toothpaste or pads that have been taken out of it's box and left on the shelf with no barcode. A lot of this stuff could and should go to homeless shelters, an organization to help kids, teens, and college students in need, single parents, or center for domestic violence victims but companies are stingy and don't care about anything that isn't making them money.
my dad used to dumpster dive for toys, car accesoires, hotgun glues, CD's, home decors, tv's, clothes, rugs, kid beds, tables, backpacks when i was little (1-10 years old), even tho my mom wasn't happy about it but i loved the free stuff😿🙌 not to mention he did these dives in normal dumpsters not behind the stores
I'd like to meet the people that donate to others that need. Someone needs to hold them high because kindness should ALWAYS be praised. Companies should be obligated to donate unwanted products!
I worked at bbw around Christmas last year. The bags full of wallflowers you see at 11:37 is a recalled sent. Customers complained it smell bad when plugged in. So have fun with that haul... They really dont like their employees taking broken and returned items home. It's in their loss prevention plan to keep an eye out when people take out the trash, to make sure their not pocketing it. Though I dont thing most mangers care that much to watch you like a hawk.
They're*

:o
they also don’t want you(employee) giving out food to homeless as it can cause a lawsuit if the person is sick or even claims to be. i always heard they care more about the possibility of lawsuits than pocketing but they do care about pocketing since like you said, it’s loss prevention when thrown away.

1) They're is a contraction of the words they and are.
2) There is an adverb that means in or at that place.
3) Their is the possessive case of the pronoun they, meaning belonging to them.
I worked at bath and body works and they would get us to dump liquids down the sink the staff bathroom to dispose of them. (This was back when they used those beads in the soap) More specifically soaps and perfumes as obviously the lotions would clog the drain. It made me so sad everytime.
I wouldn't work at those places cause I can't do that and don't want to compromise my morals.
People gotta be careful when it comes to the meat even if it's frozen because you never know it may have defrosted and refrozen
I worked at a grocery store and say a customer is already on line then decides they don't want this steak so they give it to the cashier and it could be sitting there for hours before someone comes around to do throw backs and if it's someone who doesn't know any better or care will put it back
The pets broke my heart... I'm crying rn. I can't believe how someone could throw away living animals... Unbelievable...
The 7-11 I worked at in Canada was HORRIBLE for this. The amount of food ice thrown out daily is INSANE! I was literally put on write out for the candy and chip aisle, and I had to throw out 4 full industrial sized garbage bags of goodies... in the TRASH. I asked if I could take them home because I can give them to friends and family, and i got written up for trying to steal product. Mind you all the stuff thrown was 2 months before the date. I balled in the back because I was starving and was low income and lost my job over it.
That’s BS
Food for thought: "The U.S. Supreme Court has decided that cops can search and seize abandoned property. In essence, once papers or contraband have been thrown into a trash receptacle, it is considered “abandoned” and anyone, including the police, can look through it and claim ownership." Also, I think it's worth noting that ALMOST ALL companies made major changes to their return policies during C-19, which forced employees to throw away ANYTHING returned to the store, regardless of if it was opened/used or not. This was happening at the same time unemployment was at record highs, leading people to turn to more "questionable" resources. There was a whole cause/effect cycle happening. Also, every retail/restaurant I've encountered threatens their employees with termination due to "theft", if they take things that are going to throw away anyway. They also claim that if they donate food to anyone, they are then legally liable for any resulting medical situations.
