The 1982 Thunderbirds was the greatest flight demonstration team of all times.
As they were completing a loop in the diamond four formation, the lead plane had a malfunction and could not pull out of the dive and flew into the ground. The other three members of the team, trusting their leader, followed him into the ground believing he was simply he would pull up at the last moment.
It sounds like I am making a sick joke but I am not. How much discipline does it take to see things are about to go wrong, and not puff up.
The T-38 Talons they flew at that time were quickly replaced with the F-16s they are using now.
Blue Angels fly the F-18. The Thunderbirds fly the F-16
My cousin served as the commander of the Thunderbirds for 2 years. You can only serve 2 yrs as a Thunderbird pilot and 2 years as the commander, then you rotate out. We got to sit out on the runway and watch them get ready to take off. we watched the show and then the landing. It was unforgettable! ❤
The native Indians in the pacific northwest have legends of the massive creatures they call Thunderbirds. Notice the image of a thunderbird painted on the underside of the plane
Imagine both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels flying in formation TOGETHER over major cities to encourage health workers during 2020. It was an incredible sight. And all together, they're louder than you'd think!
Well, to be fair, the F-18 is a very loud aircraft all by itself. When you start adding more aircraft to the flight, yeah, it gets unbearably loud.
A good one to see is Blue Angles and Thunderbirds over New York City.
Got to see that-Great!!!!
Go Air Force. 🇺🇸
I agree...Soft place in my heart! My Dad was in before and during Korea. No, he was not a pilot. He fixed the radios on the F-86's while stationed in Germany and in Tripoli (far from enemy lines). He did get shot at quite a bit in Tripoli though. Not from "enemies" but just crazy people. He was offered flight school at the end of his enlistment, but the war seemed close to a political stalemate, and he chose to go home and take care of Mom and my oldest sister. He often second-guessed that decision though. He Loved the Air Force! At the same time...If he had re-upped and stayed, me and my next sister would probably not exist. Peace, Love!!
I love the thunderbird painted underneath the jets
Me too!!
The beautiful sound of Freedom 🇺🇸🦅❤️
100s if not 1000s of hours of practice go into each show. And there have been deaths when something goes wrong. These brave pilots are the Best of the Best.
Adding this: The Thunderbirds would fly over the stadium on the AF Academy in Colorado Springs during graduation. 😃
I live in Colorado Springs Colorado and the Thunderbirds coming every year having the Flyover on the Air Force Academy Graduation. I never get tired watching those guys. Love the Thunderbirds. ❤❤
My cousins’ son graduated from the Air Force Academy as a pilot. That’s where I’ve seen the BIRDS. Unfortunately shortly after graduation he was killed in a small plane accident.
@@mindynickels57oh I’m sorry for your family’s loss and how amazing he must have been 🤍
The #1 Aircraft is the lead a/c. They verbally communicate with each other. The lead a/c calling the commands for whatever stunt they're going to do next. Everything is timed to the second. You also have two ground control officers. One narrating to the crowd, the other talking to the pilots. I'm an USAF veteran and have seen The Thunderbirds on several occasions. I've actually refueled all these birds.
Just wanted to say, "Thank you for your service to our country." 😊
The Thunderbirds are based at Nellis Airforce Base which is located here in Las Vegas. We sometimes get to see them when they fly over the city for special occasions or training. I've been to Nellis on several occasions when they have air shows and the Thunderbirds never disappoint. I have a few short videos from one of the airshows on my channel. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to capture them but I do have video of the F-22 Raptors.
Thank you, Andre! I’ve seen them a few times over the years. I was born and raised in an Air Force base town. One summer, they were doing their practice runs a week before the air show. Me and my husband were sitting on the front porch steps of our house to watch. One pilot was making his big arc from the base, East to West. He popped a turn, screamed past us with a roar, right above the treetops, and gave us an amazing “wing waggle!” Why we wildly waved like middle schoolers. 😂 What a thrill! We were sitting right under our American flag and it must have drawn his attention. I will remember that forever. 🇺🇸
The F-16 is now a 50-year-old aircraft design. Updated versions are being built. Many American allies, including Portugal, fly the F-16. It's relatively cheap and still effective. As we Americans might say, it's "good bang for your buck."
I dunno but I've been told "Air Force Wings are made of gold"; I dunno but it's been said "Navy Wings are made of lead"; sound off 1,2; sound off 3,4; sound off 1,2,3,4 US AIRFORCE! (a marching cadence) 😀
Attending my brother’s graduation from the Air Force Academy was a highlight of my life. Seeing the Thunderbirds and the majestic white falcons with their handlers at the base of Pike’s Peak is breathtaking. The campus, especially the Chapel, is an architectural masterpiece. Besides my brother made sure I had an escort to all the events. “I don’t know but I’ve been told Air Force wings are made of gold…”
My Husband said that they were here in Traverse City Michigan last year. We didn't go because I am disabled and it's just so hard for me to get out. They did fly over our place and our apartment shook. Saw the Blue Angel's just not the Thunderbirds. ❤❤
It’s even more incredible when you get the thunderbirds and blue angels together
They do practice with other nations and I have heard that Canada’s airforce sometimes joins in shows with our airmen. These airshows are just more practice for them.
Canada's flight team is the Snowbirds. I saw them together with the Thunderbirds once in Colorado Springs.
As an Air Force brat, I've had the opportunity to see the Thunderbirds perform many times, most recently, few months ago, and I have to say that each time I watch the show, it feels like the first time! It never gets old!
Someone may have beaten me to this, but the flags on the fuselage are every nation the thunderbirds have flown a show in
This kind of skill in our pilots is why Our 1970's F15 has 114 kills , and 0 losses in combat
It looked like a lot of the footage was taken from what we call an "Air Show". They are exactly what they sound like. Also, I agree that they choice of paint job the Thunderbirds use is wonderful! I love how patriotic it is!
I always get the chills when I watch the Blue Thunderbirds and Blue Angels.
When we had Fleet Week In San Francisco Bay, The Thunderbirds performed and the entire event was spectacular. They performed above the Bay between the Golden Gate Bridge and The Bay Bridge. All the various fleets were floating by with the sailor and officers standing on deck. I had a birdseye view in a Skyscraper Building with floor to ceiling type windows. I will never forget this phenomenal event. It was a clear-weathered blue sky day too. Great memories.
I've had the pleasure of seeing three teams The Thunderbirds, The Blue Angels and Canada's Snow Birds. All of them are top notch and put on spectacular shows.
all your missing is the red arrow (I think that is the name for the RAF) and Australian group if they have one lol
The Thunderbirds have flown aerial demonstrations in 59 foreign countries, and the flag panel on the jet plane represents those countries.
The Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels, both, fly at speeds of about 700 mph during at least part of these performances, just under Mach 1, and the Blue Angels, at least, also fly as close as only 18 inches (45.72 cm) apart.
These maneuvers are carefully planned and rehearsed, and the pilots know exactly what they are to do at every moment; no one on the ground is telling them to turn this way or fly some other direction or perform a specified formation because the director on the ground said so. The routines are known well in advance; they have to be.
I can watch this forever!!!! The US air force pilots were born to fly! In the 80's my cousin was a F-15 fighter pilot He let us near the jet when he was taking off and OH BOY that thing was fast!
The f16 is one of the most beautiful planes ever built imo. So sleek and pointy like a rocket.
Do you realize how hard that must be to flip 5 jets like it's only one?? 😜
Its crazy
When I was stationed in Spain at Torrejon AB just outside of Madrid, in the early 1980's, the Thunderbirds came to celebrate the 4th of July. We had transitioned from F-4Ds to F-16s.
The things these young men can do with a flying machine is just amazing, incredible, jaw dropping. Indont care what they are flying they can make them all sit up and beg! My nephew flew the F15 in Afghanistan and sent a picture called The Death Angel. It is an F15 unloading all its ammo and guns at once! Nothing you ever want to have as the last sight you ever have. I’m sure all these fantastic men know!
Here in Seattle, I see the Navy's Blue Angels every summer.
The last time I saw the Air Force Thunderbirds, they were still flying the T-38 planes.
I used to have a video of both the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds. The USAF Thunderbirds are known as America's Ambassadors In Blue.
I have had the good fortune of seeing the THUNDERBIRDS on many occasions. The sound and vibrations you feel are amazing. Truly never gets old✈️🇺🇸
I have to say both the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels are equally amazing. It gives me a sense of pride as an American and a wife of a retired Naval officer of 23 years active duty. Every time I see their shows it chokes me up.
I have had the good fortune of seeing the BLUEBIRDS on many occasions, the THUNDERBIRDS once. The sound and vibrations you feel are amazing. Truly never gets old✈️🇺🇸
The colors and painting on the planes is called the "livery" (as the fancy dangles on a show horse). Most of the reporters that go up with them during practice come down puking or passed out. They have to be able to withstand a certain amount of "G-force" to even be considered as a passenger. LOVE these shows.
One of the things I find "fun" in our four day show is that as the planes pass over, the birds leap out of the trees from the sound as though the tree is "fluffing". However, the birds do not go on vacation for four days to get away. Our county is 20.44 miles deep (with the Everglades being West). With the turn around and head back to the beach, nearly everyone gets some "noise".
This Thunderbird do a flyover of the Indianapolis 500 right before the race it just give you chills!❤🇺🇸🏁
I was there last year. Very cool! 🏁
Back in the early 80's when i was about 10 or 11 years old, my dad took me and my little brother to see the Thunderbirds. One of them went down about 300 yards away from where we were watching. It was that pilots last flight. It was his last everything. I cant remember the exact year or my exact age. But i bet if you Google Thunderbird crash at Hill Air Force Base something will come up about it. It was really kind of surreal being that close to one of them plowing into the ground. After that, everything totally changed that day. The rest of them grouped up into some missing man formation. It was crazy.
you have to witness it in person its incredible
They are beautiful planes and amazing pilots!! Thank you my friend! Proud to be an American!
The name of the USAF precision flight demonstration team, 'Thunderbirds', derives from the name of a southwest US native American storm deity. Note the spread eagle insignias on their F-16's tail and lower fuselage surfaces.
Went to airshows every year when I was younger. I've seen the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels like 20 times. It is always a hell of a sight to see and feel.
The Thunderbirds used to be able to pick one air show each year that they wanted to fly in. They usually chose Battle Creek, Michigan.
In recent years, shows have been limited and they are no longer allowed to perform the same location on consecutive years, but the are often able to do a quick fly-by.
They put on an amazing show. Even though I have probably seen them a hundred times, I never take them for granted.
Also, seeing them is amazing, but nothing can top feeling them. You can hear them miles away and the ground shakes, it’s insane!
We just had a four-day show in Ft. Lauderdale, with the Thunderbirds team with us this year. If they get the chance to come close enough, they make your walls vibrate as they pass. Absolutely unbelievable team! So are the Blue Angels ... one just as exciting and as the other. Pray there are no more accidents.
My favorite are the sneaks. You're busy watching the precision flying of four, then 1 comes from behind the croud just below the sound barrier to scare everyone. I love it!
My husband was in the Air Force, and we'd watch the Thunderbirds when they were in our town [Colorado Springs, Colorado]. Sometimes we didnt have to leave our house, we'd watch them fly over head then turn and head back towards the Air Force runways. We saw a lot of planes during their air shows, my favorite ones were the B2, FB111, and U2. Amazing to watch them fly in, then to see them close up when we went to the Air Show on the Air Force Base. I dont live there anymore, but I sure miss those days.
The Thunderbirds are stationed in my hometown, and the best part of being here is watching them train in the off season
Imagine these guys in combat in those F-16's. No chance
It is not irrelevant, I think it's as important for your pride of your flag as we have for ours. Much Respect!!
Most airshows i went to when i was growing up with the T-birds usually had over 100,000 spectators. I remember when they switched planes to the f-16 and i saw them for the first time. That paint job was awesome.
I’ve been to over 50 military air shows and the Thunderbirds have always been my favorite by far! I’ve met over 20 of the flight teams over the years
They move on the ground and in the air like a fine dance. with precision.
Yes, Awesome looking jets! I agree, a definite piece of art! Bye my friend!
The F16 Fighting Falcon is the Aircraft i worked on and off for my 20 years in the Air Force, my Favorite the F4 Phantom 2 third favorite F117
Growing up in Corpus Christi, Texas, we had Naval Air Station days where a large fair/carnival was held. The Blue Angels performed each year.
I have never been that close to another plane.
But… on a trip from Wash D.C. to Dallas, our plane make a sharp turn. I looked out the window and saw the faces of another plane’s passengers staring at us. That was close enough.
The F-16 is one of the few jets I really love. That said, when I was a kid my dad would take me to MacDill AFB in Tampa to watch the Thunderbirds when they flew the F-4 Phantom - now THAT was amazing!
I agree with you - the airplanes in the colors of the American flag are stunning. Thanks for watching the Thunderbirds after watching the Blue Angels
There is a banned maneuver they used to do called "threading the needle" where the other jets would form a circle and one would fly through the middle of them. There were many fatal mishaps doing that routine.
I saw them in person and the sound was deafening! You could feel the sound in your whole body. Much respect!!
best part is the sneak pass
We have an Air Force base here in the town where I live, in Texas. They have an air show every year. The Thunderbirds are incredible!!
These routines are typically performed at military air shows which are on military bases and both military personnel as well as the public are invited to attend so there are typically thousands of spectators
I live in Las Vegas. The thunderbirds are based here at Nellis Air force base. I have seen them live several times, they're amazing to see.
They put on a wonderful show....Such talent.
I am glad you enjoyed watching the Thunderbirds. They came to my city in 2022,this year the Blue Angels are coming. One year they both came to my city, and the Canadian Snowbirds also came, that was very cool.
I hope when you come here, you can see a show. 🙂
Thunderbird fun fact, Thunderbird 5 lead solo the 5 on the jet and its pilots uniform is upside down as Thunderbird 5 spends most of the show flying upside down so when flyng upside down the 5 is right side up
I love your reactions!! Your excitement is contagious and always makes me smile!❤
Proud and grateful that I live on this side of the pond. Much respect and gratitude for the military of the United States of America.
Airshows used to be a big attraction in the USA. Even smaller towns could have a small airshow every year and have a couple of invited performers in propeller driven planes. WWII aircraft ate common Jeff Shetterly in a SNJ that was a WWII advanced trainer for naval aviators, and another popular aerobatic aircraft is the Pitts "special" which is a small biplane with a big engine to climb quickly and perform scripted maneuvers like loops and rolls.
The F16 featured here is a smaller single engine aircraft and very streamlined even for a fighter jet. This allows it to gain speed quickly and it does not bleed speed as quickly when power is reduced. As an older design, it's made for a human pilot and is much less dependent upon computers to keep it stable. The cockpit is different from some other aircraft in thatbthe seat is more laid back like a race car so the effects of G-forces from extreme maneuvers is less impactful on the pilot. This is an aircraft that was designed abt and put into production in same era we were building the machines to put a man on the moon, and had rocket planes like the X-15 that were exploring the edges of controlled atmospheric flight.
Andre, the pilots are in constant communication with each other on the same frequency; and following the orders of the unit commander. They practice the formations and sequences as part of their daily routine.
iv seen the blue angels and thunderbirds about 12-15 times each, I live very close to Cleveland lake front and every labor day in September, they have a airshow for a few days, every year they switch between the blue angels and the thunderbirds, IMO the blue angles are a bit more entertaining than the thunderbirds, but both are spectacular to see, its just as amazing no matter how many times iv seen them, I'm always in awe by them.
The F16 is a beautiful plane. I get to see the Thunderbirds next weekend. Super excited. Airshow at our local AFB. I love howvprecise and in sync the ground crews are ad well. They are a part of the team and the show.
.fun fact: the F16 was designed to have unstable flight characteristics so that it could be extremely agile and nimble. It requires computer aided flight to constantly correct for the imbalances to keep it stable. It can flip over and change direction so quick. I also really love the twin engine twin tail design of the Angels' FA18s. They all just look so good. Amazing how forms dictated by physics look so good.
The Thunderbirds fly the F-16 and the Blue Angels the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The F16 is not constructed in a way suitable for carrier ladings so the Navy doesn't use it except as an aggressor aircraft training. The Thunderbirds red, whit and blue colors are truly amazing. Yes those flags of from countries where the Thunderbirds performed.
Oh man, I'm glad you are checking out these guys too.
When they come here they fly right by my house, low enough to make out body lines on them! Really cool.
So the Thunderbirds is what I grew up around all my life, but to be honest, both Blue Angels and Thunderbirds do similar stunts and yes, you have to be the best of the best. I think I mentioned that my youngest was logistics for the Blue Angels for a few years...he was able to tell me how they do their practices. But most know that there is a lead pilot...this is who they are watching. There has been losses, as they all flew into the ground...as their eyes are on the lead jet...tremendous amount of trust is a must.
Live near an airport that has two large air shows a year. One has the blue angels and the other one has the thunderbirds. My house is on the flight path so just gotta walk outside to watch them 😊
Seen them both at the Jones beach air shows…they take my breathe away.
Check out the video of the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels flying *together* over New York City.
You're awesome Andre! Love your reactions! it's the best heh.❤
Our military is the best of the best, truer words have never been spoken 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
During my 33 years as an RN, I saw an abundance of confidence and arrogance in surgeons. During my 26 years as an Air Force wife, I saw an even greater abundance of these qualities in fighter pilots. In my opinion, both professions have earned their rights to these personality traits. I wouldn't want to be without either of them.
Us navy is the Blue Angels flying F-18 super hornets. Us Air force is the Thunder birds flying F-16 fighting Falcons. They are in constant communication with one another and the tower on the ground as they can talk through their oxygen masks. IMO: The Angels in general have a more graceful flight display. The Thunder birds have more pop in their precision like when a guard flips his rile into position. It looks clean and mechanical. Both are literally the best of the best and deserve respect for their skills.
You might want to check out the stealth bomber. I saw at air show several years ago. As it flew in all you could see was a straight black line. It has the deepest base rumble. Really really impressive.
The Thunderbirds were in my city for a show this past weekend.
I highly recommend reacting to any of the Texas A&M University marching band's four way cross performances. The band is all US Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) student members, combining massive Texas A&M University's college football program's halftimes with the military precision of the US Army. It is epic - even computer simulators claim it cannot be achieved, but they perform it every year. Jaw-dropping, "no chance" performances. Please check them out!! Gig 'em 👍
The Lead Pilot the Commander also known as Number 1 Jet #1 speaks to the Team during every maneuver. The Mask provides a microphone for communication and Oxygen
The pilots are in constant contact with each other and the personnel on the ground
As a USAF veteran myself I've always been biased towards the Thunderbirds over the Blue Angels (although the BA's are very good too). You mentioned the one pilot looking at the other plane during their manuvers. I am no expert but my understanding is that when they fly in close formations, there is always the "lead" plane/pilot and all the other aircraft reference their respective positions off of that lead plane. The flight lead also calls out the manuvers and cadences during the manuver. Obviouly very difficult to get perfect and takes years of training and practice. I haven't seen them perform in a while now and your reaction reminded me that I need to look up when they'll be performing in my town again. Thanks
Blue Angels also have a one person cockpit. There are two men in each Thunderbird. And the demonstration is choreographed and practiced, so no one gives orders during the flight in front of spectators. It becomes automatic during flight. They are beautiful.😍
The pilots fly by looking at a spot on the lead aircraft depending where they are in the formation, that is why in some parts you see them looking to the side, they are focused on the lead aircraft, when it turns or flips, they match it. The Blue Angels do the same thing. So it is the skill of the pilots, not someone on the ground, the pilots train for over 1200 hours to fly on those airshow teams.
They also ‘fly’ sitting in chairs as if in formation in the air. Synchronized flying!
You'd like the EAA airventure, they have everything from WWI planes to the F-22 performing and much more.
‘I’m a Cowboy, on a Steel Horse I Ride’
Wanted, wanted . . .
I love both the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds but because I live near Nellis Air Force base in Las Vegas, I favor the T-birds a little bit more. Each team only performs at their bases so to see BA you have to be at a Naval base and AF base for the T-birds. What is spectacular about this paint job on the jets is that it is white on one side and navy blue on the other so you can easily see the jet flipping around.
Saw the Thunderbirds as a child. Thanks 😊
They communicate with each other. There is a captain in charge.
If it wasn't apparent, the clips starting around 2:12 are actually RC thunderbird F-16's, not actual F-16's. They're of course smaller and lighter, so their thrust to weight ratio is quite a bit higher, which allows them to hover. The real F-16 cannot hover like this, but it theoretically could if it had the same thrust to weight ratio as the RC one.
3:05 Just imagine having your name on the side of one of these beauties.
Top of the mountain is correct, Andre. Thanks for these vids. I would never look these up and watch them "alone".
