  • The migration of young people, often associated with the counterculture movement, to Los Angeles in the 1960s and early 1970s was a significant cultural phenomenon. However, it's challenging to provide an exact number as migration patterns were fluid, and many individuals moved for various reasons, not solely for countercultural activities.
During this time, Los Angeles became a hub for the music, film, and arts scenes, attracting a diverse group of young people seeking alternative lifestyles and creative expression. The Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco was also a notable destination for the counterculture movement, but the influence extended to other areas, including Los Angeles.
While specific migration figures may be challenging to pinpoint, the cultural impact of the counterculture movement in Los Angeles during the 1960s and early 1970s is well-documented. The city played a crucial role in shaping the music, fashion, and social attitudes of that era.
In the heart of L.A.'s vibrant embrace,
Where Sunset Strip weaves tales of grace,
A migration stirred in the '60s haze,
    Young souls seeking counterculture's blaze.
Hippies flocked, dreams in their eyes,
To the city of angels, where legends rise.
The Whisky a Go Go, a legendary hall,
Wove a tale, whispered by the Sunset's call.
    Mafia-owned, a notorious sway,
Yet the doors swung open, come what may.
A dance of rebels, a blend of sound,
The Whisky's rhythm echoed all around.
In the mystic air, Charley Manson's ghost,
A dark chapter of the Strip, but not its boast.
For in the midst of chaos, a light did gleam,
The Doors, through melodies, steered the dream.
Ray Manzarek's keys, Morrison's poetic lore,
Whisky a Go Go echoed with encore.
Legends etched on Sunset's golden trail,
A path where counterculture set sail.
So here on this strip, where history breathes,
In the Whisky's echoes, where rebellion seethes,
The Sunset Strip, a pathway of fame,
Where the free spirits flocked, leaving none the same.

After they hit big , Jim was banned from the club for his behavior. Danny Sugerman wrote that Jim took him there one night and jumped on the stage when B.B. King was performing(a photo exists). I will leave out the rest of the story. Read " Wonderland Ave."
    He got thrown out!

LA & SF are still magnets for counter culture, except now its mostly armies of homeless people that think they are artists who specialize in stealing shopping carts and dismantling bicycles into useless items. " Sanitation workers you are my super heroes " ~ Daisy, Santa Monica.

In his memoir, Krieger claims the story about Valentine firing the band after Jim' s profanity in " The End" is a myth. Never happened , he writes. 😮
