- Zebra nerites are eaceful, small and efficient, and are an excellent choice for algae control in a broad range of tanks. They eat flat type algaes, and are beautiful as well! They do not breed in freshwater, making them an excellent choice with controlled population.
Neritine parallela/natalensis- Zebra nerite
Adult size 1"
pH 6-8
Diet: algae only

I also love these guys. I like the horned ones. I call them fish tank roomba vacuums. lol
+christine lanphere ha, cute
Rachel O'leary I also say the same thing they are the best little snail for Nano and small tanks. I'm just getting into the hobby but I have many tanks. I also like planted tanks. I ended up picking up some horned ones because they stay the smallest. Once I saw them only eat the dead part of the plants, I was instantly in love with them LOL. Can I collect eggs and transfer to proper environment to hatch?
I don't know of anyone who has been successful rearing these in a home aquarium. But its always worth a shot.
I understand they need an estuary set up (brackish water). Short end of it, the point at which a fresh water stream meets the ocean. There is a low amount of salinity (salt) content there. Trick is figuring out the right balance. Haven't tried myself, but I want to and I think I would start by getting a bucket of water from such a location and doing my best to mimic the salinity content, and temperature by testing water temp at source in a few spots to try and get it right. I'd then mess with it from there. If you try this let us know how it works. Would be super cool to know how it worked out. Just not ready myself.
What should I feed nerite snails
I have a nerite that ive had nearly 11 years. Got her when I got my first tank in 2009
Coool
Are they prone to escape?
@@MyOnlyCommentIs only if the water quality is bad. I had mine in a tank with no lid for most of the time I had it before I got a bigger tank (with a lid) and she only got out once
Wow thats an ancient snail in the snail world.
I just got a nerite that stays in it shell most of the time its a baby so idk if it just sleeps alot ahah I'm new to snails
Spot on Rachel. I love em, won't have a planted tank without nerites.
I love those guys. I have one in my 20 gallon long that does a great job keeping the glass clean. I was even able to add one to my dwarf puffer tank with no problem.
yea! They are extremely versatile, often even working well with african cichlids.
Funny you posted this, I have four Nerite snails in the tank and today notice the eggs on the log, now I know what they are.
I love snails! These sound really cool!
Very informative. No waffle...just good info. Many thanks indeed
I love these snails! They have been bred in captivity by a few hobbyists but, since they are so cheap to buy, there isn't much incentive to do so.
I have three nerites my largest is about an inch around and my smallest is about as round as my pinkie nail. There is a mid sized one about a 1/2in around. My oldest nerite is about 4 years old. Sometimes she carries the baby on her while zooming around the tank. They are so cute.

My favorite is all to common. Lol. The Common Plecostomos I know it's not a fancy fish but i find them adorable and they grow into their personality as they age. I also have a thing for monster fish and being that the Common Plecostomos can reach up to two feet is always cool. I also like the fact that they pretty much eat anything that hits the bottom of the tank. Also I love feeding them veggies and watch their mouths as they chew. To me it is the best fish that eats algae but I know they are not that efficient at eating it. Plecostomos love ❤️ is rare but they make me oh so happy.
My favorite algae eater is the Horner Bumble-Bee Nerite Snail. While they are a little smaller then other nerite species, they egg size is smaller also. Bristlenose plecos are a close second.
shayqbomb You win the prize, and took the words straight from my mouth!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
shayqbomb Hahahaha!! yesss!
wyzemann I was afraid to say my fav because I know that it's not that glorious to those who have been in the hobby for awhile. But for me they are a keeper.
😊👍 thank you, you just saved at least 2 nerites... I was going to buy 3 when I only need one.
What should I feed nerite snails
@@FactsCountdown They like to eat algae it's really hard to supplement them.
I picked one up today. He's got his work cut out for him,I got LOTS of green good algae. Sunlight on an aquarium will do that. He and Sailfin pleco and Ancistrus enough algae to give those guys beer belly guts..I think I need a bigger army of algae fighters.
What should I feed nerite snails
you're so REAL! Keep it up! We need more of you in the hobby!
+Aaron Sharp why thank you
Thanks for the valuable info. I have a wonderful mystery snail which will soon outgrow my small aquarium. The nerite snail sounds like a better match. I'll hopefully get to make a trade at my local aquarium shop.
I'm learning so much from your videos after a 20 year hiatus from having fish. Thank you again for your entertaining and informative videos.
Those would be a lot better than my Malaysian Trumpet snails that took over 2 of my tanks.
I have some olive nerites in my tank, and I was beginning to notice white things scattered across the rock and wood, and was wondering what they were! You answered my question! Thanks!
Hi Rachel, after watching so many of your videos and seeing you care for your animals I purchased from you 6 different types of nerites and also 6 amano shrimp and they might just be the best investment I've made in this hobby. They are without a doubt the hardest working group of critters I've ever seen. Ever since they have been in my tank... Algae? What's that? Excess food from over feeding... Gone! Sure you have to vacuum and do water changes but these guys cut the work in half. BTW both the snails and the shrimp LOVE soft cooked, shelled green peas and mashed cooked carrot pieces. It's like a Pirhana feeding frenzy when I put them in the tank. Everyone should buy these from you!
+Ronald Rosen thanks ron!
I love Nerite snails. I have one named Beetlejuice who's been keeping my two gallon fish bowl clean and polished for six months now. I have a Betta and the bottom has Joseph's coat planted in it, and with the addition of my snail, it seems to be a perfect little ecosystem. Before getting the Nerite, I had a mystery snail, and although they're interesting to watch, they don't do a good job of cleaning the bowl, as there was always a green algae halo surrounding the bottom of the glass. About once a week I drop a small food tablet in to supplement his diet. He did get out once, and I found him by tracing his slime trail. He'd apparently ventured onto the table, and then turned around and started back up the side of the bowl on his way back into the water.
Has anyone tried creating an algae wall with water running down it into the tank so that the snails can crawl up it and graze, reducing the amount of food you have to give to a large amount of snails if you're breeding them?
Wow, such an interesting tank and great presentation with lots of excellent information. Thank you Rachel! I'm trying to find something to eat brown algae. Thumbs up of course! Stay awesome!
Let me know what you figure out will eat the brown stuff effectively (if anything) Occasionally have this issue and haven't found anything effective enough other than balancing the tank and tweaking the environment here or there.
I think that I may want to get one. I just only want one in my tank though.
I absolutely adore my Zena. She’s the sweetest snails and she will eat some of my food, otherwise I don’t throw food in for her. She’s quite happy to nibble on the remnants. Super easy to take care.
Since the snail is with my betta, can this snail handle salt. I haven’t yet and won’t till I know if it’s safe or not.
Great video! I love nerite snails :D
I had a nerite snail when I starting keeping tanks 2 years ago. I had it in my 3 gallon and it lasted two years. it loved my ten gallon. but when I upgraded to my 29 gallon it died instantly. Ima get another tomorrow most likely but it's sad the dude croaked after so long. he was my buddy. his name was Shelby...Shelby left eggs everywhere...Shelby was a dick...loved him though!
her name lol
I have these and love them.
Love these. Ive had my current pair for three years and believe it or not, I keep mine in uncovered tanks and they only come out for a few hours just above the water level. But they go back in at their convenience.
Happy St Patty Day, love ur vids. Interesting informative
I absolutely love my Zebra Nerite! It cleans the algae off my Anubias Coffeefolia like a pro! I put my tank near to the window so some natural light does streak in and algae forms on the Anubias and glass but my Zebra buddy gets right on it and gobbles it all up hehe......btw love your channel! Super informative and fun!
I have 3 of these bad bois in my 5 gallon, they keep the algae at BAY, and I honestly just let algae grow just so these guys can eat and so can my fish if I ever go on vacation (which I do yearly)
I got two yesterday as an addition to my ten gallon tank as recommend by a few people and the pet store employee to help with maintenance of my algae problem. I would say I already slightly regret my decision and wish I'd dug a little deeper research wise first. I think they're cool but I didn't know about the unsightly egg laying and also had no idea how much they poop. Seriously they've already helped with the algae but I also woke up to so much poop in my tank. It's like oh yeah my algae is better but now there is unsightly poop all over tank decorations which I'm sure in addition to being an eye sore is bad for the water quality.
Now I dont have to get these… Thank you…
Thanks for that spotlight Rachel! Could you someday please do a video what kind of snails are good for soft or low pH water? Hard to find a lot of info regarding that since most people have harder water and issues with high pH.
My pH is relatively low and only trumpet snails really thrive, would be cool to know if there are other options as well.
Still love my Ottos! 💜 So since my tank is an algae-eater species tank I doubt that this will ever be a real world question for me...but if these fellows hop out of the water in the wild, how careful do you have to be about escape artists? Great video, always a pleasure!
+grey roses this species generally stays put, but there are quite a few species that do not
I love my Otocinclus! They've become my favorite fish, more than the pearl gourami and cardinal tetras they live with. They started hiding in the thicker/darker planted areas most of the time and are not efficient eaters. I still supplement with blanched zucchini and algae disks and they've got nice fat bellies. I love these little guys!
Yes they are
My zebra snail poops alot 😂😂
I've read that these often crawl out of the tank and "go walkabout." Have you experienced that?
+Anthony Ragan not often with this particular species
I ordered me some flip aquatics. They are suppose to be here Friday. Thank you for the info.
Luckily I got a male nerite snail in my nano tank for over 6 months. It is the major algae eater in my tank. My tank is filled with anubia and buce and they are all like magnet of algaes but one nerite snail two oto fish and water change every four or five days keep my tank a very low algea level.
I have two of these and two of the black version. I purposely leave algae on three sides of my tank so they have plenty to eat .
Love the nerites. I also have them in every tank. I think that is always the last thing on my orders "a couple of nerites." Some I have had for 3 years. I generally only clean the front glass of my tanks leaving at least 2 or 3 sides of algae/bio film covered glass for the shrimp and snails.
As always thanks for the info. I didn't know the egg cases actually hatched. I think my nerites are more artistic though!
Take into consideration these guys love to adventure outside a rimless tanks. And not necessarily find their way home. Oh yeah, and mine totally survived a couple years in an outdoor 50 gallon tank that stayed out below freezing at times. They're hardy.
+AdamOrnelles I don't find that with species, though the ones often sold as tiger with the jagged line pattern absolutely do. Most of the time if these guys are leaving it's because of an o2 issue
What I can hear you sound really well educated. I would love to hear your videos but I have the volume all the way up and can barely hear you. Don't know if it's just me but I just wanted you to know. Thank you.
I always wondered what those white stuff on my driftwood were, thank you so much! Now I know :) its cause of my only snails, the nerite snails.
probably eggs
I wish I could get those here!!!!
Thanks for tossing in the African cichlid remark. I'm going to give 'em a try.
Caution, Only the Olive Nerite Snail is a freshwater snail. The other nerite varieties are saltwater snails that will live for a short time in your freshwater tank.
Hey Rachel! I wanted to hear your thoughts on calcium supplement options for snails. I've heard that you can use tums or plaster of Paris cubes?
I just got a small horned nerite snail and a pair of male guppies 2 days ago. My aquarium is 3 gallons, and I've had plants and a filter in there for 2 months with a fertilizer tablet. (Water wisteria, Anubias nana, and a dwarf pond lily, and I have some pothos growing inside the filter alongside the pouch of carbon.) I added a heater, thermometer, and air stone connected to a pump fit for 5 gallons run through an adjustable valve. I've mostly been replacing evaporated water with tap water that I've left sitting in clean cups for about 2-3 days to offgas, occasionally using distilled water, and I have a gravel bed. I can't find my water testing strips to test right now, but I had tested it recently and it was perfect before getting stocked.
My favorite snail!!!
Actually it's probably Neritina (Vittina) turrita as indentified in Ting Hui Ng 2016.
Couple of questions for Rachel O'Leary:
1. Can/do you sell/ship nerites to Massachusetts?
2. How to I check out your inventory online? (I don't do Facebook.)
3. Do you sell baby/young nerites?
I have an old black mystery snail (about a 2" diameter shell) that's about 3+ years old and a smaller (1" diameter) white mystery snail that's about a year old in my 60 gallon terrapin tank, but I'm looking to get a few nerites to start off in my 20 gallon planted tank but they'll move to the bigger tank once the mystery snail(s) expire. My terrapin only chases ghost shrimp and occasionally I give him tiny ramshorn snails as a treat, so he doesn't go after anything about 1" big as he's only 1.5 years old & about a 4" long shell.
Thank you in advance for any info you can give me.
Currently I am in cancer treatment so not selling or doing much
Just got one of these yesterday and found him today belly up. Not sure why. There are other snails in the tank and they’re fine. I’m so upset because he was cool.
I have a 30 gallon fresh water tank and I have pair of nerites, male and female and how I know that, because suddenly I had tiny nerites snails within a few weeks of getting them both. How do I stop them from having more”kids”? These two have broken every known Nerite snail rule I have heard of here on RUclips.
Nerites are great algae eaters and won't reproduce in your tank but the eggs look like sesame seeds and will cover everything in your tank. Make sure you can tolerate that because they are quite a chore to clean off IF you can.
His shell is really cool Rachel I have Snails in my saltwater tank and they have afros hahah well hair algae growing on them 😂
There are fw snails as well that are sold with algae on their shells, they call them "don king" snails. its pretty absurd, lol.
Rachel O'leary hahaha that's funny 😂 I think i might have to call mine don now 😂
They also eat apisto eggs, caught 'em in the act.
i love them but not there eggs ... i have bog wood covered in these egg sacks from one snail years ago !!! crazy!
+Isometric Aquariums pull the wood and take a metal brush or nail brush to it
Just got these, THEY ARE HUGE
My snail keeps flipping itself over and when I flip it over it will climb the glass then flip itself over again and again and it not really moving I had it for 2years so can someone tell me why it's doing this
No
FUNNY SH#T is your snail still acting like a silly goose
It likely is clinging to a small amount of film at the surface of the water and sinking. Mine do that. I just figured out how as I have another set up with basically floating plants (dying because of a light deficiency) for a tadpole set up. It's temporary and I noticed they are under the floating plants all the time and occasionally falling as they loose grip. It just all added up at this point.
I just put one of these guys in my tank hoping it knocks back the brown algae that's popped up...paid 4 bucks for one.
Love these snails!!!
They can and will reproduce in freshwater. Not in great numbers like other snails. I'd say 1 in 100 eggs developed into snails in my two tanks.
Well i don't know how, but when i had my Nerite snails lay eggs, some of them even hatched. And i have only freshwater tanks.
Mrs O'leary you sell Zebras ! Cannot fiend them anywhere. Setting up a new 150 acrylic, need all the help I can get,. Had some in my 60 and NO algae.
I have one in my 29 gallon and he is amazing at cleaning the tank.
What should I feed nerite snails
hello I'm new to your channel and love the stuff you do. i have a 55gal with a albino Axolotl and chocolate pleco but I'm still getting brown algea:-/ i test my water weekly also have my pet shop test it and everything is perfect. I'm wondering if you can recommend a good snail or opinions to help with it?
I just got rid of mine . I liked the color and what they do , just got tired of all the eggs spotting all the wood in the tank. Every square inch of the pieces of wood had eggs on them. With one in a ten gallon tank like I have it was just not for me . If I had a larger tank then I think it would not have been such a issue.
38 years in the hobby, and I have always considered snail pests! LOL! I have been thinking about some of these as the shell patterns are just striking. Have also been considering some apple snails out in the pond this year. Something that I have been told is that snails can be disease carriers. I wondered about your thoughts on that. I do follow strict quarantine procedures with anything that I bring in. Do snails exhibit specific symptoms?
Snails exhibit no symptoms, they are intermediary hosts. It is unlikely to be an issue in a closed container pond, but doing a qt of a month when you bring them back in would reduce any risk.
So my Zebras in my African cichlid tank seemed to have bread I have one to two millimeters and about 6 to 12 made it. They are juviniles bit and moving around and doing snail stuff. It's not per say brackish water but California water and lots of minerals for cichlids. How is this possible? And I can't find any info on breeding at this stage. Not sure what to do
Hey Rachel
Big fan of your channel. Do you think nerite snails will be ok with convict cichlids? I need something to help with algae in this tank. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
I think its worth trying, as nerites are hard for fish to eat. I would have a backup plan.
Ok thanks for the quick response. We do have 2 other tanks if it doesn't work out. Appreciate you
hey, great content as always, I can't buy them here or find them ( yet) saludos desde Costa Rica :) ps your're awesome
I just cannot keep these guys alive. I have several species of other snails but these guys only last a week ot 2 at most. Any advice?
Do you have a heater in the tank to keep the water warm, if not that might help.
They are really good, especialy when you have a tank with java moss witch would be thrown all over the place by fish like ancistrus.
So I’ve got a 100g tank, I have a bristlenose plec for algae. The rest of the fish are two 10 inch balla shark, 1 moonlight gourami female passed away, 1 golden gourami again I’ve had my tank for a long time my female counterparts to the gourami died of old age, the two boys get on fine, 3 bousmani ranbows and 1 red rainbow. I’m really understocked for my tank which is great, I love my Balas so I want them to grow out as my feature fish (I had 3 but one got impailed by a piece of drift wood 😢) . In the past I have had this tank packed full of fish, I want just a few big guys which is my Balas and everything else I will adjust. What snails will be big enough but not breed in my tank. I want something I can see, but won’t take over...as my Balas are passive and won’t eat anything other than their food bless them, they are like giant pussy cats
Geeeez your tanks are clean lol jealous
I have a 75g with 19 tigre barbs, 18 neon tetras, 5 clown loaches and a bristle-nose Pleco. I’m afraid the clown loaches would try hard to eat the snails if I were to get some. Am I wrong here?
Mine will happily eat algee wafers
I have one the snail was pitch black now is grey I named it Yoda
Hi RAchel! I have recently acquired a Zebra stripe Nerite snail from my daughter and son-in-law in a 5 gallon tank. It is planted and has drift wood in it and I have added two neon tetras and two otto algae eaters. I have four of them but two died. I supplement the ottos with a very small algae wafer a few times a week since they have done such a good job cleaning the algae off of the plant leaves. I apologize but I don't know all of the plants. I know one is a large anubias because it has bloomed a beautiful whitish flower that reached to the water line. Question: I have a three gallon grow out tub with lots of green algae growing. Is it safe for the snail to move it to that tank for cleaning or will I risk losing it if I move it from tank to tank?
+Susan for SLC Aquatics that should be just fine
thank you. I'll update you when I move it.
I finally got one!
Only the Olive Nerite Snail is a freshwater snail. The other varieties are saltwater snails that will live for a short time in your tank. As I'm sure you have found or will soon find out.
How much $ for enough for my new 150 ? And some of those small Pleco's you said were very underrated
Woody's Discus (FB)
I'm considering adding a Nerite (or two) to a tank and have been doing some preliminary online 'research'. Just prior to opening up this video, I was reading a thread on ThePlantedTank.net and I happened to see a post and thumbnail from, drum roll please... msjinkzd: planted tank guru 11-27-2011(or 27th Nov 2011 in 'proper' speak - woooooh!) on the subject of mixing (or more to the point, not) them with Assassins.
:)
Love your unique look and Good video thanks.
I love my nerites but the eggs do become an eyesore
Yup, i hate the eggs
209Control will fish eat the eggs
i heard these snails can't breed in freshwater?
qaching, they can lay their eggs in freshwater, but they cannot hatch without brackish water, so the eggs stay inert until removed. So if you buy four nerites for a freshwater tank, you'll have only four until they pass away or you buy more. The eggs are easy to remove if caught within a few hours, otherwise you need a credit card or razor blade to scrape them off. I don't mind it, they keep green spot algae cleaned from my tank in exchange for me removing a couple of eggs a month. A few eggs is much easier to remove than green spot algae and nerites are one of the only organisms in freshwater tanks that will eat that algae. So for me, it's a beneficial trade-off and they're super cute too.
ok thanks for the info
My African cichlids hate algae eating fish. I’ve got a 48 gallon tank close to a window. How many would you recommend for this tank?
I never had snails before, or at least not intentionally. For algae eaters in a planted aquarium will Batman snails (Neritina auriculata..) perform better than more common Zebra nerites? Supposedly Batman's should be a little more mobile, like they can more easily get going on their own, if the fall and land on their back.. Which kind of nerite would you recommend for part of a amano shrimp and fish algae eating crew?
I have one just like that besides the shell the slimy body and the antenna. It just sheds fur licks it's butt n barks all day
my black racer has never laid eggs anywhere since ive had him 3 months ago
I used to have one, but was not a fan of the eggs all over everything. LOL
We have one zebra & one bladder & they bred!
That's physically impossible. The bladder snail probably just reproduced on it's own because bladder snails are capable of asexual reproduction
Are there any snails that would do well in a planted soft slightly acidic tank?
My Zebra only stays in one top corner of my tank ,& won't stay on the driftwood where the algae is 5gallon tank ,1 Betta,&2 ghost shrimp . what can I do to get zebra to do his job ?
it's likely it is not happy in its water conditions
can you put 2 of these in a 10 gallon with a betta fish
Yes, though you would not want to add 2 to an immature 10g (as in hasn't been running for 6 months or more), as they can easily starve
I've had mine for only a month. There's algae bloom due to excessive light. No worries about them starving? Tank just barely cycled. Fed them algae wafers during the time I allowed tank to mature. I know a month is nothing but the fact there's algae is a sign tank has been cycled correct?
i had 3 of them and they were great...but i think my kribs ate them 😢. id like more but i dont know how too keep them in a safe place
I have some hair algae or thread algae and was really thinking of getting a zebra Nerite snail. Someone said when they lay eggs it's hard to get them off and you need a razorblade to get them off is that true? what else is a great algae solution for a 5 gallon planted tank with a betta so far? Thanks, you are amazing!!
Rachel, is there any way to ensure snails are free of Liver Flukes? I know my situation is not what your channel is set up for, I have abandoned all tropicals in favor of Tilapia, so Liver Flukes are a concern for me.
From what i have read, they are not an intermediary host for them. I don't know much about the aquaculture of food fish. Generally, I was under the impression that liver flukes were sort of particular about their snail hosts. Generally, snails are one small part of a process as intermediary hosts, and often those that are hosts are those species which can survive in really poor water conditions. Nerites cannot, they need clean, well oxygenated waters making them a low risk for such things. Regardless,, understanding the life cycle and doing a quarantine before adding them would remove risks (assuming the parasite has a specific hatch/life cycle).
Ok, Thanks!
Good info, but please get yourself a lapel Mic to better hear you.
i have a five gallon tank with two mystery snails. And two horned nerite snails can i add one more. Or isit too much. thank you
Depends what fish you have
I've kept Nerites for sometime and it the beginning and they would lay eggs all over my wood and it didn't bother me I felt it gave the tank a more natural look. but for some reason over the past 6/8 months hardy any eggs at all
I have all kinds horns, Zebras, Etc there beautiful and I have about 20 in a 55g I also keep them in my other 55g and same thing no eggs or hardy any. i also keep cutter bone tied to a smal rock on the substrate and a cuttle bone in an extra AC 50 I use with my canister.
they love green beans and other veggies as u know so in ur opinion why no eggs r they ok. i also heard no eggs mean they're gettimg enough food. your my go to person so your opinion would be appreciated.
I think they are probably just fine :) I don't find they lay many eggs in my tanks either.
best snails is pond snail..omg amazing snails ...grow fast and clean perfect damn
guppyfanatic The only good pond snail a smashed pond snail for food for my guppies
Bladder snails are the devil....
@@godemperorofmankind7255 why? i have them
They reproduce like crazy and easily get out of control
They reproduce without another, eat your plants when algae is gone and never stop reproducing. They are like a plague, because they are too hungry and populate so quickly that they can ruin the balance of the tank. I got Nerite Snails and a Tiger snail, and they are really a good team. They can not reproduce unless the water is somewhat brackish, from what I've been told.
Are some lazier than others? I have a single tiger nerite in a 6g betta tank (he has been in there for a couple of months now and the tank is 6 months old) and he isn’t eating any of the algae.
