I created a snail food / "snello" for my Nerites that 2 out of 3 actually like and will eat like little piggies! It's made from organic Spirulina Powder, organic Agar Powder and powdered calcium carbonate. When I first got my Nerite snails I had almost no algae in my tank and didn't realize that they wouldn't eat other foods. Out of desperation I created an organic, veggie snello that they actually LOVED and wolfed down in a matter of a couple of hours! It was a huge relief because they hadn't eaten for about a week and I was worried they would starve to death! I keep extra snello on hand in my freezer in case I ever need to transfer them to a new tank that doesn't have algae yet and I still give it to them from time to time to make sure they get enough calcium for their shells. BTW... they seem to eat the snello best when it's smeared onto a piece of driftwood or rock in the tank.
How did you get them to eat other food? I wish my nerite ate some normal food because its scary not knowing whether he has enough food or not. But I have him with ramhorn snails and so he can always eat if he wants to.
I hope you enjoyed todays video. For snails, snail foods and so much more visit our website lifewithpetsgci.com. Link is in the description box! Thanks for watching.
My 5 gallon was covered. I had a mystery snail, a black devil, a pond snail, and a dozen MTS for a month with no change. I added one nerite and it was almost entirely gone in about 4 days.
I came to the same conclusions you did :) I did try ramshorns and their similar friend trumpet snails, both really explode in population and are more of a bother than a help unless you're fine with hundreds of the buggers that you can't easily get rid of. I found the trumpets to be even worse than the ramshorns in this respect. And I think the ramshorns are a little cuter. They got into my filter and everywhere, and they are super survivors. I love mystery snails as a main pet. They have a lot of personality and are endearing. One other thing to think about is some fish may pick on them and bite their antennae. They do grow back, but that makes the mystery snail more shy. It's just fun to see them trucking around waving their antennae. It's also fun to feed them veggies and other things. I'm glad you mentioned they need high calcium. I used a partial shell substrate and would put in some cuttlebone and that seemed good for mine. Nerite snails are pretty but stay small. They are just efficient tank cleaners that you may not see a lot of. I think keeping them with mystery snails is good since mystery snails are haphazard eaters. The little white eggs can be slightly annoying but it's not the worst. I am glad they actually don't easily successfully breed or they could be a problem snail too. If you only have 1-2 nerites I think that is enough to get the job done and they don't lay that many eggs. One other important point is the snails may decide to vacate the tank if you have any openings or they can push a lightweight lid. I had this problem with mystery snails- mine wandered my room several times before I figured out how to close the hole around the filter. Fortunately it's easy to follow their slime trail and they generally can survive being out for a little while. My friend said her nerites also escaped but mine stayed put.
I had never seen algae on my tanks' walls until I had a Mystery Snail only tank. They do eat and poop like crazy: their snello, algae wafers, blanched veggies, my plants (big time), but they are definitely above munching on glass algae. The other tanks (with nerites in) were always spotless.
My Nerite snails are sluggish and one has a crack in in shell. Something that I notice between the two species is you can see the Mystery snail out and about while the shell of the Nerite you are lucky to catch them on the go and you never even see pneumostome , breathing tube. My substrate is lightly planted and is made of peatmoss and sand. They can spend all day just sitting in it without movement. I really do enjoy the progress of both. Thank you for sharing the video. 😁

Hello, I've had nerite snails for over a year, mine LOVE green spot algae. I just bought my first mystery snail today hoping it would do as nice of a job. After watching your video, I'm regretting getting it a bit. 😑 I guess it will just be an additional aquatic pet.
How is your mystery snail doing? I bought one thinking it could be an algae preventative and just fell in love with him. LOL! Luckily, it seems I don't have too much trouble with algae in my one tank. The other has a little bit of spot algae that I'll have to clean because I think it's the type that like nothing eats. LOL!
@@TarasTankFriends I'm glad they turned you around! They are so entertaining to watch. They move a lot quicker than you'd think they would! I love my two and have been thinking of getting more myself...but mine just laid her second egg clutch so I have a feeling I'll be swimming in them soon. Haha!
Would be interested to see a larger experiment with more species, including pest species and newer rarer species. Apple/mystery, blueberry, nerite, ramshorn, dwarf ramshorn, bladder, pond, trumpet, and of course the inexplicably hated freshwater limpet.
Nice video, I use Ramshorn Snails and Malaysian Trumpet Snails to keep my tanks clean! I even have a time lapse of them crawling around the plants and glass eating the algae!
You’re definitely right about the wood, my narrite nails are always cleaning and moving the Cholla wood around. Good luck on trying to Aqua scape with that because wherever you put it they’re going to twist it and roll it and move it. I love your mystery snails, the purple is amazing. When I got my narrates nails they had little white spots on them, my KHNGHR up there enough for guppies and I put a few pieces of crushed coral in the bottom but they don’t seem to play with it, what do you give them to fix that or is that just always going to be white now?
i have tanks and i clean them every week with scrubs to remove algaes.. but when i both nerite snails.. it has been 2 months no need for scrubings.. even my fish houses are shiny clean.. very thankful to my hardworking nerites
I added apple snail today.. It started digging up in the substrate.. It did that in 3 spots within first 10 minutes.. I moved it back to quarantine tank for now.. . Any reason they do that? How to get it to stop? It id ruining the aquascape by digs and uprooting plants..
Great great video. Both my 15g and 55g have nerites. 13 in all including 5 sun horned nerites. I need them to start doing a better job of eating the brown diatoms on my plants. Particularly my java ferns. It hasn't gotten to my crypts, or anubias yet, but those brown diatoms (algae) make my ferns look horrible. Any suggestions? I'm not getting otocinclus...lol
i absolutely adore mystery snails they are honestly my favorite animal... do you have any idea as to why they are illegal in places? are they just confused with other apple snails that are hermaphrodites ?
wow.. impressive.. im beginning with the aquarium life and put two snails in there to start about 3 days ago. (forgot the breed) one is constantly moving around and cleaning which is neat to watch, the other has been attached to a plant now pretty much after I put it in the tank. It attached to the end of stem where the leave begins. Not sure if this is the process of laying eggs, some kind of hibernation or what?? have you seen this behavior?
What an amazing video! I'm really a huge fan of mystery snails but that nerite is really good with the algae. Will probably take them both. Maybe the mystery snail eats the eggs of the nerite? Which would also solve the "problem" of that?
I guess I have been lucky cause I have three nerite snails in my 29 gallon and I have never seen white eggs. It's my guppie tank and they do a great job with the algae.
I tried to add a trio of nerite snails to my tank, but they all died within 2 weeks. I still don't know why. The tank also has bladder snails and glowlight tetras, and they're doing ok. Might try again, if I can figure it out.
Are use a combination of Malaysian trumpet snails because they turn over the substrate really well and keep it clean but they do breed like crazy so beware and the Nerites take care of everything else I found it to be the perfect combination
Escaping...that's also a big thing to think about.. large mystery snails are good at that...my large one got out my larger tank I was lucky to find it...I placed it short term in a 3.5 with a few old male guppies and he seems really happy...he sleeps in a small flower pot...and eats Cory cat food and leafy overs...my nerite snails who are so old now are fine if you leave them space to get out the water...they like to get away from my guppies who feed off the algae on the shells...
Alexx 2108z I have a fully planted 40 gallon breeder. I have 4 zebra snail’s now. My glass looks amazing but plants are getting a little bit of hair algae. Would 1-2 tigers help with that?
Thank you! Ive got that snail in my tank..just instinct made me but it..whats your opinion on trumpet ? Rabbit snails? (Think thats what theyre called)
Good morning. I know that snails like plants, but I am SO SCARED about the plant fertilizers. I know that they can be harmful or worse, fatal, to snails. What do you recommend? I have a mystery snail and a nerite. Thanks so much. I love your channel.
What kind of snails can handle warmer water - like 84 degrees? Also, how about soft water? I'm having trouble with nerite snails at this temperature. I have Discus, so I need to keep it warm. Don't want bristlenose plecos either as when they get bigger, they eat plants.
Nerite snails are the best without a doubt. Something to keep in mind tho. While Nerites cant breed in fresh water they do lay eggs especially on wood which can be extremely hard to remove. Other thing to know about Nerites, they cannot right themselves like other snails. This becomes a bigger problem as they get bigger. When adding them to your tank be sure to set them upright on the substrate. Occasionally they may get knocked off the glass by fish and can land upside down where they may end up stuck like that and starve to death if not found and righted first.
i have a cycled planted tank rn with just a mystery and two nerites (waiting for the sponge filter to come in so i can add shrimp- the filter i have rn kind of sucks) and i love that setup. my nerites have always been rather nocturnal (even in a snail-only tank) and they bury themselves between the gravel and the glass walls during the day. mysteries have so much personality & funkiness but holy crap do nerites get the job done with algae.

Love your videos, so informative but I would like to know how your secret to removing the nerite's eggs off glass & ornaments please, they are so unsightly & I find it extremely difficult to remove them. Help please & thank you.
Thank you. They don’t leave them on my glass. I just leave them on the ornaments.
I love mystery snails but my angelfish kept trying to nip his antenna thinking it was a worm so I got narite and they did wonderfully
Angel fish are kinda dicks in general lmao
Love this video very in dept explaining I too had a Ramhorn breeding outbreak that I had to sell a bunch of them off
Mystery Snails have such beautiful shell colour
Hello, I've had nerite snails for over a year, mine LOVE green spot algae. I just bought my first mystery snail today hoping it would do as nice of a job. After watching your video, I'm regretting getting it a bit. 😑 I guess it will just be an additional aquatic pet.
How is your mystery snail doing? I bought one thinking it could be an algae preventative and just fell in love with him. LOL! Luckily, it seems I don't have too much trouble with algae in my one tank. The other has a little bit of spot algae that I'll have to clean because I think it's the type that like nothing eats. LOL!
@@JessRansdellSmith i fell in love with mine, too. I have 4 of them now-- fascinating little animals!
@@TarasTankFriends I'm glad they turned you around! They are so entertaining to watch. They move a lot quicker than you'd think they would! I love my two and have been thinking of getting more myself...but mine just laid her second egg clutch so I have a feeling I'll be swimming in them soon. Haha!
Just tossed some nerrite snails into my tanks, but I have issues with trumpet snails.
algea gone, but the eggs are coming. Be careful.
@YYpang no but when the drift wood is full of the white eggs, it looks ugly to me. That's the reason I get ride of all the snails.
@YYpang no - they need brackish water to hatch
Would be interested to see a larger experiment with more species, including pest species and newer rarer species. Apple/mystery, blueberry, nerite, ramshorn, dwarf ramshorn, bladder, pond, trumpet, and of course the inexplicably hated freshwater limpet.
Nice video, I use Ramshorn Snails and Malaysian Trumpet Snails to keep my tanks clean! I even have a time lapse of them crawling around the plants and glass eating the algae!
Nerites for the win! Great experiment with good visual results 💕
Thanks, this was an interesting video to make.
Good job! Thanks for this video
I made an entire 30 liters Aquarium just for ramshorn snails.
I love this adorable little fast breeding things.
I think your videos are great and very informative!
I had a zebra nerite snail I my tank and he did.a great at keeping it clean I just didn't like the little white eggs left on my driftwood.
i have tanks and i clean them every week with scrubs to remove algaes.. but when i both nerite snails.. it has been 2 months no need for scrubings.. even my fish houses are shiny clean.. very thankful to my hardworking nerites
I added apple snail today.. It started digging up in the substrate.. It did that in 3 spots within first 10 minutes.. I moved it back to quarantine tank for now..
.
Any reason they do that? How to get it to stop? It id ruining the aquascape by digs and uprooting plants..
Thanks for this video. Just getting interested in having some snails. What kind of plant is that you have at the back of these tanks? Thanks.
Brilliant - very informative - very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
i absolutely adore mystery snails they are honestly my favorite animal... do you have any idea as to why they are illegal in places? are they just confused with other apple snails that are hermaphrodites ?
probably due to the threat they pose to the ecosystem if irresponsible owners just chunk them out in a pond.
@@fakiirification it's invasive where I live, they eat rice plants even if they're still small
Very helpful video, thank you for posting! It's ok to put both nirite and mystery in the same tank too right?
Thank you. Yes both snails can live in the same tank.
The Nerite snails are much better in eating algae in any aquarium! 🌷🌿
wow.. impressive.. im beginning with the aquarium life and put two snails in there to start about 3 days ago.
Sadly Mystery snails don’t eat the Nerite eggs, you will find them all over the tank.
I have two Zebra nerites (the striped ones in the video) and zero eggs.
I guess I just happened to get two male snails. :)
@@GiovanaSimmer I got 3 and no eggs at all. Guess we're lucky then.
I love nerve snails alot
Escaping...that's also a big thing to think about.. large mystery snails are good at that...my large one got out my larger tank I was lucky to find it...I placed it short term in a 3.5 with a few old male guppies and he seems really happy...he sleeps in a small flower pot...and eats Cory cat food and leafy overs...my nerite snails who are so old now are fine if you leave them space to get out the water...they like to get away from my guppies who feed off the algae on the shells...
Will either of these snails survive in a tank with an 8 inch oscar?
Also, will either of them breed if solo in the tank?
Thanks
Actually zebra snail's are good for the walls. But tiger snail's are good for cleaning the plants
Alexx 2108z I have a fully planted 40 gallon breeder. I have 4 zebra snail’s now. My glass looks amazing but plants are getting a little bit of hair algae. Would 1-2 tigers help with that?
@@bstock1343 well, for me yes!
Alexx 2108z they are the exact same species of snail. They just have a different shell pattern.
What are you using for substrate? Great experiment!
Black sand.
I have not found any issues with plant fertilizer. We use easy green from Aquarium coop and it is snail safe.
@@Lifewithpets72 that’s actually the one I was considering buying. Thank you!
I got a 10 gallon tank a nerite snail and a shrimp or 2 . I just bought 2 , ottocinclus fish.
What size tank were those tanks because they seemed like a good size
After seeing your video, I was all set to get a nerite snail, until I saw all the eggs yours produced. Does anything eat nerite snail eggs?
i have a cycled planted tank rn with just a mystery and two nerites (waiting for the sponge filter to come in so i can add shrimp- the filter i have rn kind of sucks) and i love that setup. my nerites have always been rather nocturnal (even in a snail-only tank) and they bury themselves between the gravel and the glass walls during the day. mysteries have so much personality & funkiness but holy crap do nerites get the job done with algae.
I just got a nerite 3 days ago and as of yesterday and today he’s in his shell and won’t come out… so may him back and get a mystery instead
