The great thing about their argument is that you understand it on both sides. We know that Nancy is right about their colleagues and is a good person for pursuing the case, but Jonathan also has a valid point. Financial security is important for his family. Their lives are a constant struggle and money doesn't come easy to them. Pointing this out doesn't mean that he doubts Nancy. He's simply thinking about the future. He's being responsible.

It's an issue of privilege. Privileges the book privileged in different ways Jonathan because he's a man and Nancy because she's from a relatively wealthy family. But they don't understand the Privileges that either of them have that's what the arguing is about.

      "He's a man".
It hasn't really done him any favors.
Jonathan hasn't benefitted from that in any way throughout the series. In fact he's probably one of the most selfless characters in the show next to Bob and a big issue with this scene is Nancy coming at him trying to justify her shitty decisions with how other people treated her when Jonathan never allowed the way he was treated to affect how he treated other people or his brother. He never stopped being considerate, and that was the main issue here because Nancy never once thought about Jonathan's situation... In fact, going by her mentality, she never thought about his situation because he WAS a man.
You cannot use the top 1% of men to judge the bottom 99%. Jonathan was not her bosses.

I love this scene. They did such a good job of making you see both sides. Nancy's privilege, Jonathan not experiencing sexism etc. Nancy was obviously right about the guys in the office and the rats and everything, and Jonathan should have stuck up for her. But at the same time, she IS just an intern, and going off pretending to be a reporter of course was going to get her fired. So she should have just done it on her own, not dragged him into it since he actually needed the job. Also "Oliver Twist routine" was a really fucked up thing to say.

Jonothan has a point, Nancy comes from a well off upper middle class family in a big house with their own bedrooms, parents own modern fancy cars, their station wagon was new and expensive at the time , and they don't have to worry much about money, while Jonothan comes from a working class, below poverty line family with a single mother raising 2 sons on her own, and lives in a run down 1 floor house, and drive outdated cars at the time, Jon's rusty aging 1970 Ford Galaxie and Joyce's 1975 Pinto. Of course this job meant alot to Jonothan so that he could get out of poverty and be able to get his family a better life that he never got to have.
It's the typical class conflict here, Nancy's privileged upbringing, clashes with Jonothans unprivileged upbringing.

Hey, I see you have uploaded alot of Jancy things, I was wondering if you could upload 2 things that I can't find on RUclips:
    1. When Jonathan and Nancy slice their hands, including when they are wrapping their hands up (season 1)
And 2. The phonecall between these two shortly after the scene in this video
If you can't I get that XD but I'd be happy if you did because I can't find these scenes anywhere xd
    Thanks :D

I’m on Nancy’s side 100% as a women Jonathan would never understand how it feels to be in her shoes and be treated like that at work because he’s not a women. I understand Jonathan’s point but he’s totally disregarding what Nancy’s experience and perspective is. No one should have to stick around for that mistreatment, yes you have to be financially stable but don’t be complicit with foul treatment at work especially when it’s regarding your girlfriend.

I am pretty much on both of their sides. They were fighting a group of assholes to do what was right. Even if Jonathan wanted to be more responsible, he knew deep down that Nancy was right. At the same time though Nancy knew deep down that she was being impulsive. I just can’t disagree with either of them.

I like this argument, it makes me sympathise with both characters and it's one of the only realistic couple arguments in the show. Nancy obviously shouldn't have had to deal with the degrading treatment of her sexist co-workers and I understand why she wanted to prove she was right, it was the 1980's and women in the workplace weren't usually taken seriously back then. But at the same time, Jonathan also has a very valid point of view. Nancy clearly doesn't understand his perspective because she comes from a privileged family. Jonathan had to be the man of the house ever since his dad left and his family isn't wealthy so even a summer job is important to him because he wants to make money to support his family and his college tuition. Well written and very well acted, you can really feel both of their frustration through the acting.
