    • @AthenaMinerva03
      @AthenaMinerva03 3 года назад +68

lil toopy the entire third season was about stopping the Russians from opening the gate. So I would argue the third season focused on the gate and the fear of Russians gaining access to the upside down, not the upside down itself. The upside down is hardly mentioned, and the main villains, Billy and The Meatflayer, were already in the over world by the time the season started. Plus, the Hardly ever mention the upside down in the third season, the focus is more on the gate itself. So I personally feel like the upside down itself has been put on the back burner and has recently only been in the show to be a place for all of the monsters to come from, not necessarily the main problem, which I believe it should be. I personally would like to see a sort of investigation of the upside down, I am personally very curious of the up side down, but I’ll be satisfied if they visit it at least one more time.
      Edit: fixed a typo

For me the only problems with S3 is that they did Will/Noah really dirty and that Mike and Eleven’s whole relationship was a cliche mess.
edit: i left this comment 3 years ago. i still stand by the things i said for the most part, but i think that it's important to note that mike's parents show little to no affection for one another over the course of the entire series. this obviously has its impact on his relationship with el. ofc, this isn't an excuse but it's an explanation. mixed with el's general emotional immaturity (which makes sense given what she's been through), their relationship spells DISASTER. if they were an irl couple id genuinely suggest that they take a good, long break and grow separately. i'd personally prefer for el to remain single, but that's probably just me.

They amped up the 80s-ness, doubled down on the shipping aspect, included large amounts of gooey gross out imagery... and played the "russians bad" trope so straight the Washington Monument is trembling in sheer terror. And the fact that Season 4 will probably delve even further into this gets a beleaguered sigh from me. The political subtext worked best when it *was* subtext.

Stranger Things is now almost entirely surfing on the strength of its wonderful characters... the third season in particular has a plot that is absurd beyond belief.

Totally agree. Season 1 of ST was magically FLAWLESS. Season 2, though not on the same level, was quite good as well. Season 3 was an absolute DISGRACE. Nothing about it felt right. Yes, some people were at awe cause of its visuals, yet in regards to plot, character development, emotional weight, and plausibility, this season was extremely poor. Still, many will continue to watch this show, and ignore a tv masterpiece like Better Call Saul.

exactly, i watched season 1 just because of how suspenseful and mysterious it was AND I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHERE WILL IS, in season 2, there were at least some suspenseful and creepy moments. But in season 3, they lost the main point of the story, *The Friendship* Mike and Lucas treated Dustin and Will like shits, none of the characters had the main focus, they just showed and told us EVERYTHING without letting us figure it out WHYY!! the only moments I liked was the scoops troops funny moments, all of them coming together in the mall and joining the dots and the emotionally intense scene. They ruined Mike's character as a friend and presented Max as she doesn't care about anyone.

He went from someone who looked like he was learning to love to a wall-punching rage machine misogynist. I really hated what they did to him.
That was one of my biggest issues with season 3-instead of having this natural kids grow a part people change arc they wrote the characters like they didn't know each other, like they hadn't been not just through traumatic life changing event together but 2. I still love the show a huge amount, but I really could feel there was something different about it once I got into season 3. The thing that I noticed the most is that I was almost starting to dislike Eleven at parts, because of how much the show overused her. Thought to myself “None of the other characters seem capable or important now. What’s the point of them when Eleven can just do everything?” It annoyed me how every other characters seemed weak unless she was there, but that’s just my opinion.

In Season 2 I was ok with it, but the tone of anxiety and unease they developed in the first season is completely dissipated by Season 3. The anxiety we felt through Nancy seemingly being stalked along with her grief over Barb's disappearance, and Joyce's determination to find Will, made the show so emotionally charged. It was so immersive. To sacrifice that tone in order to add more characters... It was a mistake.
I think production (the fantastic set of the mall, the costumes, lighting) was the best part of Season 3 but I deeply miss that unease and fear that made the show so good. The plot and tone is that of a completely different show. I wish they were able to incorporate the production value that was unique to Season 3 with the suspense and fear that was so integral to Season 1's success.
And the scene with Dustin and his girlfriend was so pointless. I literally couldn't watch the scene when they broke out in song, I skipped it completely. It was actually interesting that we didn't know if Dustin was lying about her or not and they just blatantly ruined it.

Something season 1 did perfectly (in my opinion) was split up the massive explanation of everything among the three regular plots. Joyce and Hopper were in charge of explaining Hawkins and the Upside Down. Mike and the gang were basically explaining who Eleven was and how she fits into everything. And Jonathan and Nancy were explaining what the Demogorgon was and how much of a threat it was. It was a great way to not give too much to the viewer and if the audience didn’t understand one of the sections as much, it didn’t take from understanding the other two. In the end, everything came together for one massive concept.

Rocky 4 is a wacky, over the top battle between two invincible supermen and also there's a talking robot.
The thing that made season one so powerful was how real it felt. It took the threat of a monster coming from another dimension seriously and gave us a grounded world for that threat to interact with.

4:41 I think this did add to Eleven’s character arc. It was the big city, dark, and crime filled contrast to the loving, small town, and simple life in Hawkins. Eight was like Eleven, but she chose to live in the past - having her life revolving around killing those who wronged her. After the attempt to kill a father with children, Eleven realized that hate didn’t solve anything and only made the problem worse. She learned to forgive, and by extension, forgive Hopper and amend their problems.
I find in Stranger Things a relatively obvious coming-of-age storyline (for all stages of life). So, it’s not surprising to showcase parent child relationships, teen romance, the leaving behind of childhood activities, and early career finding.

As someone with sisters (much, much older sisters) who were the age of the Stranger Things cast in those same years... the outfits are 100% accurate. I have pictures of pure 1980s fashion cringe in the form of their preteen and teen years. The only thing was Max and Eleven were more boyish than girls--even Tomboy--generally dressed. They usually would do that dorky ass side-pony tail for their hair, too.

    • @heidih3048
      @heidih3048 4 года назад +15

Haha, yes, the side pony tail. Some other girls' fashion trends of the time that I remember: knotted friendship bracelets, beaded safety pins attached to one's shoe laces, 2 pairs of slouchy contrasting-color socks, one on top of the other arranged on the ankle so both colors could be seen equally... Jean mini skirts, acid or stonewash jeans with tapered-in ankles, rolled to make them tight at the bottom, exposing the lower ankle (with slouched socks), hugely oversized t-shirt, sweat shirt, or sweater, over a mini skirt, bike shorts, or stirrup pants.

Both have roots as douchey jocks, but one was slowly moving beyond that characterization, while the other was doubling down on it. That's what I thought as well, although they confused me a bit with their half assed attempt at fleshing his character out and humanizing him, for no reason. If he was simply a foil, they shouldn't have made the attempt to make the audience empathize with him through illustrating his past as an abused child merely lashing out. He was also far too cruel. Sociopathic even. That's not a "mean character who deep down is actually just dealing with childhood trauma" kind of character behavior. He was handled very poorly in season two, in my opinion.

    Season 1 - a mystery and a miracle.
Sinister and dark enough, everything's logically connected. Beautiful start.
    Season 2 - little weirder.
I think, it has saved that sinister and dark spirit, even a little. New relationships, some new characters - that's good. I just don't get why Billy would go to Hawkins from California, if he could go to a bigger city. Hawkins is described like a little town, which nobody visits, so it's quite strange.
    Season 3 - a joke.
More comedy than a horror. Something is illogical - how did Russians build a huge lab under a mall?! Wouldn't it be weird if a guard with a gun was standing near a mall? Why is there this tall Russian guy, who always walks loudly?! The good thing about this is Alexei tho, but I just don't get it now.

Season 3 felt like a gummy vitamin. Tastes good while you're eating it, leaves a weird, artificial aftertaste once you've swallowed. So many downgrades and unexplored ideas. The whole Russian base thing was just so unbelievable but I have no idea why. Like I'm totally fine believing that these kids discovered a parallel dimension of monsters in the first season but for some reason I can't believe that they actually infiltrated a Russian base, even though that's more grounded in reality. I think the overbearing father trope with Hopper was okay and kind of enjoyable, but I really didn't like how he acted with Joyce, especially since in season 2 he learned a lot about empathizing with and trusting her. The monster stuff was a lot less spooky in my opinion, just slightly more gross. Also they kept trying to pair off every single character. Like we already had eleven&mike, Lucas&max, Jonathan&Nancy, and then they wanna add Hopper&Joyce, Dustin&Susie, AND Robin&Steve (although we all know how that turned out). LIKE CHILL! They didn't explore Billy's character nearly enough which is why I didn't care about his sacrifice whatsoever. If they didn't want to give him more screentime they could have at least shown how Max felt about the whole situation and the fact that her brother might be possessed but no, she doesn't seem bothered much so why should the audience be either. I liked Will's arc in the beginning, you know, being the last kid to "grow up" in the group and having to struggle with the fact that he feels like he's being left behind, but they didn't do a ton with that. idk man, just my thoughts.

The reason you find the Russian base harder to believe than the Upside Down is most likely the scale. A mirror dimension is so fantastical that your brain literally cant understand the reasons why it couldn't happen. But a Russian laboratory underneath an American shopping mall during the height of the cold war? You can easily understand and comprehend the factors that make something like that possible.

The main thing that bugs me about season 3 was how gratuitious El's leg wound was. Like it makes you physically uncomfortable watching them "operate" on her. I get that's entirely intentional, but given Stranger Things has generally been realistic with how it treats its characters as fragile human beings, the fact El could SURVIVE such a horrific "operation" on her leg and NOT bleed out felt unrealistic. She even rips the piece of the Mind Flayer out of her leg which should have realistically killed her from blood loss and trauma.
That and in the next scene she's standing and walking unaided...Until the Billy chase scene happens. THEN suddenly she's unable to walk unaided. That and her powers disappearing wasn't explained.

Maybe her powers were all subconsciously directed towards healing her leg/preventing blood loss? Either they're still working on something to do with her leg (fighting off some sort of toxin from the Mind Flayer?), or they're simply suppressed by her emotions? Either way, I agree that it is unrealistic.

El should have died from blood loss anyway due to how heavily everybody relies on her to get things done. The other characters may do most of the investigating, but the investigation generally leads to some point where the solution is "have El do x", or they get in a situation where they need El to deus ex the fuck of them out of the monster's grasp. I think after some point, she uses her powers every single episode at least once.

Everyone was a superhuman this season. The fight at the hospital should have killed Jonathan or make him a paraplegic for the rest of his life.
Same for Steve. He got beat up for hours until unconsciousness, no way he would've been able to drive a couple of hours later.

@@FKA91 Lmao yeah, I watched this season with my friends, and we kept screaming about how Jonathan should've been paralysed after the hospital. Dude got a chair smashed on him multiple times but still walked around just fine.

I did feel a bit annoyed that El was so vitally important to standing a chance against the mind flayer. I would have like to see Will be revealed as another superhuman with maybe teleportation abilities. Maybe then he could have helped the group in a "realistic" way.

It's hard now for the writers, they've made EL so powerful she's basically superman, they even had a little wonder-woman reference in Season 3. That's partly the reason the Matrix Reloaded was so bad, Neo was too powerful, there wasn't a single fight where he wasn't totally on top of things. From the point of view of fighting the monster Eleven the other ordinary characters without any powers bring nothing to the fight scenes.

@@leew1598 When they had that moment where El's powers weren't working anymore, I was getting excited. I had hoped that either
a.) Will might've done something superhuman as per OP's post
      or
b.) El would've used a clever plan to beat the monster, allowing her to use a skill that isn't superpower-based for once.

If anything, you could say Stranger Things captured the spirit of an 80's franchise. A near perfect first effort, followed by underwhelming and rehash-y sequels (a la Karate Kid).
