Amazing video! I worked at a vet clinic in London and one of our doggies did the surgery at RVC with great success. He recovered so quickly and did so well for so many more years

Love you Nate and Michelle!!! ❤ Zoey is always in our hearts, our role model ❤
Dr. Morgan, Nate and the Mighty Hearts has helped my dog on the journey as well 2½ years ago in Japan. Best decision we've ever made ❤ She was 8½ yo, advanced B2, had 6 cords replaced. She just celebrated her 11th birthday last month ❤

My 13y 8m old boy passed away night before last, I believe from a heart problem. He was panting hard and could not get up. His tongue turned blue so I took him to the emergency vet. He kept struggling to get up and couldn't. He couldn't get his legs under him and kept thrashing. His last vet visit was 2 months ago. He was showing signs of his age with arthritis that was pretty painful. I was just ready to go back and ask if there was more that we could do for him. The emergency vet said it was something quite serious and we decided to put him to sleep. I didn't actually get a diagnosis, but we decided it was probably his heart. A heart attack? I knew the end was close but did not expect it to come like this.

Question: my 15 lb dachshund started 1/2 25mg tablet spironolactone ,1/2 5mg tablet benazepril and Lasix whole pill 1x a day instead of 3. He did really well until bedtime. Then his breaths when all the way down to 14 and he had a couple of weird mental things happen. Should he take less benazepri or stop all togetherl?

Hi Dr Judy, can you help me clarify my understanding of supplements? Recently I was told that they only help once the dog is diagnosed with an ailment, and that supplementing before an onset does NOT prevent ailments at all. This is really confusing to me, because then am I potentially putting strain on my dog’s liver and creating an imbalance? I know things happen when they happen, but I also thought supplementing could potentially prevent certain diseases (not in all animals, but at least some!). Is this not the case? Really would like to clarify my understanding please :) thank you so much

The standard medication for the heart murmur dog is controversial I think. I read that it makes things worse. My 10 year old dog suddenly had a level one murmur and now it is a level 3 only 6 months later. I have him on Bark and Whiskers heart health supplement powder and Ubiquinol. I will love him and keep him as healthy as possible but open heart surgery in France with loans, etc. is a crazy option. Quality vs. quantity of life is probably a more realistic goal for pet owners to provide their pets.

Great video! New mitral valve surgery option available now: Dr. Chris Orton at Colorado State University is successfully performing the TEER V-clamp procedure that’s minimally non-invasive. There are 6 locations in the U.S. already doing this procedure right now: Colorado State University, University of Illinois, VCA West Los Angeles, University of Minnesota, Tufts University and Sawgrass Veterinary Cardiology. Please do your research on TEER if going to Japan and the UK is not a feasible option. Do not ever give up hope with MVD!

Don't be fooled by this valve replacement surgery which comes in many different names - TEER, LAD, etc. Or better yet DO NOT GO TO VCA WEST LA!!! These new clinics popping up doing this surgery are doing it for the $. So be careful about their training and how many dogs have had successful surgeries and how many have not under them. There are WAY more complications than are explained after the surgery, not just during the surgery and everything is smooth sailing. Lost my dog to this surgery 6 weeks post op. No idea why - nothing was explained... still looking for answers!

Perhaps look to opening up the stud books for breeds with devastating health problems. Cavaliers are afflicted in a big way. More needs to to fix this than expensive surgeries. I love the breed, used to show, trial and had very few litters. I quit in disgust as very top breeders turned a blind eye and deaf ear to epileptic puppies being produced in inordinate numbers from a noted sire. Pure bred breeders are the same as the general population. Big noise on virtue and superior healthy stock with little to no substance. I will not keep another Cavalier.

I agree. It is unrealistic to try to make open heart surgery for dogs the cure for this breeding problem. But, the American Veterinary Medical Association in bed with big pharma will promote anything that makes money. The AKC should become more active in policing breeders who are unethical but as long as they make their money, the powers that be there are not interested I'm sure.
