They are both completely in love, but he's insecure and sees red flags in the relationship, and instead of risking getting hurt, he sabatoges the relationship, that way he can get out with his happy memories and diefied rose colored glasses version of her in his mind. But she goes tit for tat and hurts him just as bad as he hurt her, and it makes him realize how bad he fucked up, which prompts them both to finally communicate how they feel and what they actually want, which allows them to work things out. At least that's how interpret it. It's a twisted, exaggerated love story.
