Grew up with them (differently). Know their beginnings. Saw them several times as CSN&Y. Once at Woodstock(2). These souls will one time be saints. They might be already for all we know!!!
@MrDRUID27 I always preferred CSN to CSN&Y... the music always felt lighter and more fun with out Young, while it seemed more agressive/political with Young...
The older I get the more I realize what a unique, special and rare time the 60's and 70's were creatively. It truly was a renaissance. I feel so fortunate to have grown up then..
I loved my first wife dearly, we had a year together, got married in a beautiful wedding in September. Everything was so great until one day, three days before Christmas, we learned she had bone cancer. At first, we pretended she was "normal" because the cancer was at it's fourth stage, but as she wasted away before my eyes and her pain grew so great, we just couldn't pretend anymore. We both loved CSNY, and played the album constantly. Then, one day in the Spring, she died in my arms while waiting for the ambulance to come. I felt her go limp, and she was gone. Even though I married twice more, I always thought of her inside my thoughts as my only one. I hear any CSN or CSNY song, and it reminds me of her. I will love her forever.
That is a beautiful tribute, sir. Now that you have visited the painful valley of the shadow of death, I wish you many return trips to the mountaintops of bliss, happiness and fulfillment.
SO emotional over your story about your wife...it really hit me in the heart. So painful and agonizing...I went through the same thing with my sister...she weighed 85 lbs. The day she passed. So so sorry...but your memory of the BOND you had with her is just......beautiful.
I used to fly maritime patrol missions in US Navy P-3 "Orions" and one night I walked up to the cockpit of this 11-man airliner-sized four engine aircraft, and as I stepped into this small control room, all the lights were turned off at once, absolute darkness inside the aircraft. For once, it wasn't an emergency - the pilots had selected all the lights onboard to be switched off. The effect was ... overwhelming. Outside the windows at 32,000 feet, the unpolluted, unlit Indian Ocean sky was an upside-down bowl of stars extending from horizon to horizon. Similar to being in a planetarium, it extended 120 degrees across the star-filled heavens, with every one visible. Constellations jumped out on all sides - years of navigation training gave me a name for every cluster. Realizing that, I knew where to look for the Southern Cross - up towards Iran as the crow flies from where we were patrolling. The Southern Cross was hanging low in the sky and I watched it out the window for a long time. I'd seen it before, but not like that. I went back to sleep the last couple hours until dawn among the parachutes and kit bags, found this song on my Aiwa cassette headset, and drifted off to sleep.
The only thing I could think of that would have been better is if you were able to listen to the song while you were actually looking at the constellation. You did have a really good view. I think it probably would be best though on a boat out in the ocean at night with a clear sky and the music going, but yours was a keeper also.
When the economy tanked I lost my home and when I went to North Dakota to drive tanker in the oil field most of my belongings were stolen from storage. I bought a sloop with some of the money I saved and I have learned how to sail. I never understood the meaning of the words until now and it inspires me. Now literally everything I own is on my boat with the largest American flag I can fly off of my mast. For the first time in my life I have found peace.
392ih The Southern Cross is a constellation the Southern Hemisphere. He's sailing from Avalon in California to French Polynesia, which is in the Southern Hemisphere. The Southern Cross (AKA the Constellation Crux) is the rough equivalent of the North Star in the Northern Hemisphere, it tell's you which way is South....
76 is not old; I'm 64 and agree with Bette Davis that old age is not for sissies but sometimes I feel 20 and all the better; every day is a gift and this song encapsulates that perfectly. Tx for comment my friend!
My dad loved vinyl. I thought his record collection was the coolest thing when I was kid. Every Friday night he would play his favorite songs and we would dance together. We both loved this song. He's gone now and his record collection belongs to me. I will never tire of this beautiful song. In 2019 I traveled to New Zealand alone. I will always remember the first time I saw the Southern Cross. It was early winter on a cold and windy beach. I thought of my dad and all those years ago when we would dance like wild people every Friday night. Love you dad ❤
My husband and I used to dance to this when it first came out. He was an old soul and related well to this song. Sadly, he passed when we were just married 10 1/2 mo. 36 yrs later, I still dance with him to this song.
Quarantined here in France on my own. One daughter in London. One in Sydney with my grandchildren. So much love for them. I’m not alone here you know. I’ve got my Southern Cross too. Bless you all.
yo en Argentina con mi hija y familia, y mi hijo en Colombia tambien con su familia, nos comunicamos por whatsapp, ya pasara, tengamos fe, Dios no nos abandona
I retired from the marines. I've always loved this song, so I did what any half crazy marine would do..I bought a 38 ft trimaran and sailed it around the world. Me and my little dog bo. We are going again in August. My brother says I'm going to get killed, so what. I'll go doing something I love. You can see infinity in the middle of the Pacific and the stars.
Stephen Stills - vocals, guitars Graham Nash - vocals Timothy B. Schmit (of The Eagles) - vocals* Art Garfunkel (of Simon & Garkunkel) - vocals* Michael Stergis - guitars Mike Finnigan - keyboards, backing vocals Richard T. Bear - keyboards George "Chocolate" Perry - bass Joe Vitale - drums Joe Lala - percussion "Seven League Boots" by Rick and Michael Curtis -- inspiration *David Crosby had not yet reunited with Stills & Nash when the song was recorded, so Timothy & Art assist with the high harmony co-leads & background vocals Someone posted this under one of the other videos of this song.
I remember thinking of this song the first time I saw the Southern Cross. I was flying a night sortie off the USS Kitty Hawk on my first cruise. We were in the Southern Pacific heading for the Persian Gulf in 1992. It was a dark night hundreds of miles from any land. Looking straight up through the canopy, at 40,000 feet the stars were so bright it felt like you could reach out and touch them. It was magnificent!
"Think about how many times I have fallen...spirits are using me, larger voices calling....". I can't listen to this song without chills running through me. Beautiful, so beautiful and when I think of David Crosby and his trouble and instead of fleeing he owned up and faced it...I admire him so much . This song always raises me up from any low I'm feeling.
My mother and father, when they were young and still very much in love, used to listen to this song. Nostalgia is a window to a time you yearn to return to but cannot. Music helps.
Oh so true... Your parents must be my age. This song brings back so many memories of my youth. I've wished too many times how much I would love to make a trip back to those care free days
I've never heard nostalgia described that way. It really hit home to me, and yes, music does help. It's so bittersweet and almost hurts in a strange way. I grew up in the 80's , and for me , it was the best time of my life, and I didn't even know it. If only.... I've heard the phrase, that youth is wasted on the young, and it's now starting to make sense to me.
Going back to a time when music was music. It had harmony, it had melody, it had a soul. A time when musicians were successful based on their talent versus their appearance.
This song came out when I was a freshman in college, and I fell in love with it right away. I’ve been singing it all my life since. It’s so full of longing, sorrow, and hope all at once. Now I cry as I sing it, as it’s tied to my son who died at 20, and my dad who’s still with us, a sailor. I know his time left is short, but I’m grateful for all the years.
I love this song so much. "What heaven gave to you and me Cannot be forgotten" The most beautiful saying in a song. For me it is true. Beautiful song oh so beautiful.
This may be the first video on here where all the comments I've read are just so...human. No arguments, no anonymous name-calling, just real life in its glory and sadness. Prayers and peace to those who've lost a loved one or are in that slow process with an aging parent. The power of music is infinite and it truly unites the world as I sit here land-locked in Texas and read posts from the southern hemisphere and dream of seeing this beautiful constellation some day for myself. Great song from a great band, and whoever said they don't make this music anymore is right. We will always have it, though and if there's a heaven above or a better place I bet it has a soundtrack and I bet CSN are on it.
Your comment really made my heart feel good and brought a smile to my face. You are quite right noticing all the kindness, which is a breath of fresh air.
You know... i live in USA.... i work with a bunch of grumpy old men in a power plant in Madison Wisconsin.. the negativity is extreme.. i go to the Philippines every year.. listen to this song with my girlfriend there.. all the nice people there.. i relax.. it's the only time i get away from my crappy life here..
Nobody writes music like this anymore. I am thankful everyday that I grew up during an era (60s-70s) when pop-rock music along with American Jazz were the greatest art forms on earth. I like to hope that we didn't take it for granted, at least I don't think we did. I do remember that we thoroughly enjoyed the music being made for us. The Beatles, CSN(y), Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, America, Bread. Too many to name really. I look at the music scene today and it only serves to remind me of how very, very lucky we really were.
+shortfacebear 63 Not sure how you'd broad brush over Yes and Genesis, but "too many to name" doesn't do justice to the greatest progressive bands of all time (powerhouses). Your point is valid, however; the greatest time to grow up, musically speaking, for sure!
+K Marking Fantastic choices of course. I probably left too many names off but Genesis was a glaring omission. Rush and Yes of course, prog rock helped define the sounds that we grew up with.
+shortfacebear 63 I was in Samoa. living in a "Fa'la (small hut) on the beach when I saw the Southern Cross for the first time, this song was in my heart at the time
The Southern Cross is a constellation you can see once you cross the equator. To me this song is about reaching a certain age in life when you get old enough to see things you couldn't see before.
In 1983 I was performing with my band, Spankie in the Frenchman’s Reef Hotel in St. Thomas. There were four of us, each of us had been the lead singer in four different bands. Naturally, with four strong singers we performed many CSN songs. I remember our last night performing there. It was a magical place and a magical time and I felt so blessed to be performing with such talented musicians. Singing this song for the last time in beautiful St. Thomas was particularly difficult. With tears streaming down my face and trying so hard not to have it effect my voice, and feeling the warm breeze blowing through the open windows of the club, we bid a heartfelt farewell to our friends and the beautiful experience of living there. It’s still brings tears to my eyes to hear this song all these years later. Thank you CSN For your brilliant, poetic music.
I have 'Visions' Little Miss Sunshine, like this morning with my Dad, R.I.P. I'll Always Love you Hayden Panettiere. " Honestly, " Neal Patrick Fry from Heaven's Hands.
I was born in the early 70’s. My parents made sure we listened to the music of the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. The music has given me a much larger appreciation towards almost everything. My wife and I continued the trend by making sure our kids listened to and understood the music from the 50’s til now. Funny enough, we can ask them, when in the car “who is it and what song” and 90%+ of the time they can rattle it off.
I like this song, brings back memories of riding the school bus and the bus driver jamming on all the good music. Nothing like the oldies, there will (NEVER) be good old music like ours from our generation. So (SAD)!!
This makes me miss my Dad who is at Peace finally after suffering a bad quality of life his last years. I would give anything possible to be able to see him, hug him and tell him how much I love and miss him. You were my mentor, teacher, and hero Dad. Love, Your Son, Bob
September and the rest of the Autumn of 1982, Room 266, Hemlock Dormitory, Mansfield State College, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, USA, the college radio station WNTE, 89.5, played this all the time. I was twenty years old and became enchanted with the melody and the lyrics and I wondered where is this mystical and magical Papeete and Marquesas? Then I saw the video and that orange cap he wears? Ever since then to this day I call my own cap just like the one he wore in the video my Stephen Stills cap, tho' mine is my preferred color of blue. I also decided back then in 1982 that Someday Maybe I Was going to travel to Papeete and the Marquesas. It became a quest for me to complete the journey. Forty-two years later and here I finally am with my wife and son who, ironically is twenty years old, like I was when Ii first heard the song. I am listening to Stephen Stills singing “Southern Cross” as I type out this comment in Papeete, 18 June 24. This Sunday, the 23rd, we will be in the Marquesas for ten days. All I can say is, “Wow”. I still cannot believe I am here. Thank you Stephen Stills for inspiring me to come here.
"...the promise of a coming day..." That line brings me near tears everytime. My fiancée was killed by a drunk driver in 1995. We loved this song, & daydreamed about buying a boat & sailing away. Everytime I hear this song, or watch the movie "Joe vs the Volcano", I think of her & that boat. Now I'm 50, half-crippled (same wreck) & never found another like her. I'm waiting it out, without a clue what I should do next. But everytime I hear this song, I am both happy & sad.... ....what might have been.
Beam Me UP: UP is the key word. Find something you love to do that makes you happy(er), and do it as hard as you can. I, too, lost my wife in a car wreck. For 8 years I cried for the children I'd never have, that we'd *tried* to have. Doctors all said there was nothing wrong with us, but the Lord would have it so. 6 yrs later, hearing His voice, I walked away from an aviation career that I'd fought and scratched to obtain. For 2 yrs I rocked along at various odd jobs. Then...at a square dance, doing what I enjoyed doing, I met this girl, 29 yrs old, 11 years my junior, so lovely that I got dizzy just lookin' at her. She'd just moved out of her parents' house, had never been on a date (parents, eh). Because " the Lord would have it so," she accepted my attentions, we married, and now in my old age I have 5 kids still at home. I don't know your situation, Beam (or yours, gentle reader), but I do know that sitting at home, waiting to die, isn't how you find another life. Everything I have today came from the Lord. Seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened, ask and it shall be delivered to you, filling your lap, running over for bounty. Get up, go out, do something -- go UP!
oh doll face....i am so sadd about what happened to you!!!! hang on to your love and life and kindness.... it will pull thru this... also...heaven is going to make you whole again and you will find and be with your love again.....believe in that....I was hit head on by drunks back in 1993....killed 5 people...my best friend, my 4 year old son, .....almost me....you just believe and it will be so.... ok???? hugs and prayers and love to you
So proud to be a true Australian and even better than to have the southern cross on our flag, absolutely beautiful to see in our heavens,,,,,,,,,,,,Beneath our radiant Southern Cross is in our anthem,,,,,,
When I got home from an extended round the world deployment this song came on the radio as my wife and kids were driving me home. I hear in now and it brings tears to my eyes. 20 years in the USN will sure show you the world but the cost is great. I’m sure my wife, now together 54 years had the more difficult time than I. The night sky in the middle of and ocean is like nothing you will ever see inland. It will burn into your brain and call to you for the rest of your life.
How come everyone's a veteran here? Doesn't that tell you something? Why is anyone called a racist for being the same? Blacks liked this music, too back then and we all never noticed what color the artists were who created them. Right? Veterans? C'mon?!!
Music like this will never be made again. It is in the past and will live forever in my heart. I feel so bad for the kids now that will never experience when a NEW awesome song plays on the radio. You hear it for the first time, you stop and listen to the whole song, and you just fall in love with it
They do it EVERYDAY- I guess it's like everything else in this world... gone to shit yet it is acceptable to just swallow the pill 'they' serve up. I remember my old man saying when I was a kid "they don't make this like they used to". I realize now with each passing day that this must ring true for each passing generation, in regards to the quality of just about everything. The day this is failed to be realized is the day it's ALL over- and I feel we are upon this threshold!
Amen to THAT ! Today's so called "Music", is very often a compilation of nerve burning noises and Offensive language! One good example, is the (so called) band, named "Anal Cunt" and their (so called) song: "I Like Drugs And Child Abuse"! THIS, along with SO MUCH MORE, represent the disintegration of the American Family, a Lack of Basic Morality and a blatant promotion of Every Kind of Violence, in the USA today! How Sad for the Human Race
I lost my wife of 33 years six years ago and this song we use to listen a lot after I finished the house and got the sound system installed. She loved how I had music throughout the house. I still miss her greatly even today.
HEY BROTHER, I TOO LOST MY WIFE TO CANCER. MORE RECENTLY MY LITTLE BROTHER( WE WERE CLOSE). MUSIC HELPS...THANKS JESUS FOR GIVING US EARS TO HEAR. HAPPY EASTER .
Ha! After 20 years not hearing it, I still know every word! How blessed to have come of age in the 60's, when music had a soul and did what it was supposed to do!
I returned from Australia a couple of weeks ago visiting family in Victoria state. They live in the bush, no light pollution, our first night was spent gazing up at the southern sky with the southern cross clearly in sight. Nothing like it exists in the northern hemisphere. Crux is dominating yet welcoming, you look at it and think about the early explorers who used the southern cross as a navigation tool trying to find the southern land. I took a ton of pictures of the southern sky with the southern cross in all of them
I crossed the equator twice . Becoming one of the countless sailors. Initiated into the Realm of the Deep . Being thoroughly examined , tested and iniated . A Trusty Shellback now . I am entrusted with educating the Wogg or Polywogg in as much as I am truly capable . Woggs have no hard shell and are susceptible to being easy pray to the horrors of King Neptune's Deep . The crossing the line ceremony and initiation are logged in the logs of U S. Warships . Honoring a century's old tradition . I for one am proud and honored to have attained .
Back in the early 80s I bought a jukebox on a whim. We lived in a single-wide trailer house, so it wasn't like we had all that much room for it. My wife was an understanding soul, though, and we grew to love it. One of the most played records on it was "Southern Cross." When the song comes on the radio now (not often enough, I might add), we still call it the "jukebox song."
For some reason I never hardly heard this song back in the day, though I've always been a big fan; their music is truly archetypal and a defining sound of the 60's. Now I'm even more in awe than ever. This is one of the most beautiful masterpieces I've ever heard....
I absolutely love CSN. I was so lucky to see them in concert many years ago and their harmonies are so wonderful and they actually care about each other. Such talent and decency.
19 , my hair was to my shoulders , sit on the beach at sunset .... smoke a really good joint. And look at the horizon line full of colors... what a joy in life to be able to listen to Steve Stills , David Crosby and Graham Nash 😎
So did my Mom from the Netherlands on the Zuiderkruis (Southern Cross in Dutch)All seem to have good taste in names for their kids.Discovered this gem of a song on late night radio and loved it ever since.
When this song came out, I was in a low point in my life. It helped me get through - and nine years later, God showed the woman who knows love can endure.
Pandemic 2020....I stop by here to listen, read all the beautiful comment and warm my soul. Humanity is a beautiful thing. Thank you to all on the front lines. I know I speak for many when I say “we appreciate you”.
Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern Islands Sailing a reach before a followin' sea She was makin' for the trades on the outside And the downhill run to Papeete Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away Think about Think about how many times I have fallen Spirits are using me, larger voices callin' What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten Around the world (I have been around the world) Lookin' (lookin' for that woman girl) Who knows she knows (who knows love can endure) And you know it will When you see the Southern Cross for the first time You understand now why you came this way 'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a-dyin' And my love is an anchor tied to you (tied with a silver chain) I have my ship and all her flags are a-flyin' She is all that I have left and music is her name Think about Think about how many times I have fallen Spirits are using me, larger voices callin' What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten I have been around the world (I have been around the world) Lookin' (lookin' for that woman girl) (Who knows love can endure) And you know it will And you know it will So we cheated and we lied and we tested And we never failed to fail it was the easiest thing to do You will survive being bested Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you And the southern cross
when I listen to CSN I understand how singing is done. Not fancy computer sounds added, just voice and guitar. These 3 men showed you can make great music with just harmonizing your voices. It's almost a lost art with today's music.
My dad had a tape (later CD) of his favorite music for car trips that was all '60s and '70s music, so this song always takes me back to the Minnesota North Shore on Scenic 61.
As you get older you think about when you screwed up and when you did good. You kind of recap yourselve. I'm 71 and I'm blessed with 9 grandchildren and 4 beautiful children .alot to live for.
Oh Wallace ...I so am with you. Going thru dark thoughts at 70 as to what I have stuffed up in my life...then listen to this song, think of 5 wonderful kids and ditto 3 grandkids (one who at 19 loves all my music!) and it all ain't so bad after all.
Mid sixties here Wallace, it seems life reflection gets stronger and stronger as the years go by, is it the same for you? This song really helps in that reflection.
I saw the Southern Cross for the first time sitting on a beach in southern Costa Rica. It's a beautiful constellation. I found myself singing this song to myself. Ive loved it for more than 30 years. My wife bought me the original vinyl, which I still possess. Lovely lovely music.
when I saw the southern Cross the first time it was from the weather deck of a cargo ship. The officer on watch had invited me up. He also played this song while I was watching! That was 1986, to this day when I here Southern Cross, I'm transported 30 years and thousands of miles away. Thank you for your videos, and for making an old man smile. :-)
1989 USS America (CV-66). Med/I.O. Crossed the Equator in July. I used to stare at the Southern Cross all night singing this song to myself. These guys sing it MUCH BETTER!!!!
Burl, well for 'an old man' you are one handsome hunk!!! Bless you!!!! I made the cross with my brother on his 75 food sailboat back in 2006.....he took me all over the South Pacific....he was a photographer for National Geographic....it was one of the most wonderful times of my life....sadly, he passed away at his home in Belgium in January, 2016.....but BUT....it's nice to see stories about this crossing....so...hugs and smooches to you!
Love this song. Always will. Never saw the Southern Cross, but Music is her Name. And you know love will endure. Thank you Stephen you have this ability to make me cry about women and life in general.
this song was a big part of my life way before I even met my wife or had a daughter in 1995, now the song means so much more to me, my daughter moved to Australia last yr, here in Tennessee that is a long, long long way from home she is having a wonderful life there and the song i knew decades and decades before means a little more to daddy.....
I sailed the Caribbean, alone, for many years, and know of what the song speaks.....I left the US for a better life elsewhere, but music is always with me....
Hey - Thanks for watching and especially thank you for your comments. I put this video together to please myself. I am gratified and have been very pleasantly surprised to see so many who have watched it have also found something pleasurable in it as well. I wanted to say here that I find everything about this recording emotionally and spiritually uplifting as well as deeply touching. I believe that the voices, instruments, lyric and performance have been bound together in an extraordinary fashion. In the same way as those who have commented here, the song gives me chills, too. It gives me goosebumps, too. If I allow it, it brings me to tears, too. This is a song from my days as a teen. Regardless of any nostalgia that I may feel for it, it is primarily the music itself to which I respond. I also wanted to say something here about my choice of images. Some who have commented here appear to have been perplexed by my use (or overuse) of dolphin imagery. My reason for the use of the dolphin images is this: Dolphins are as tied to the mystery, grace and joy of open water as we are. They have been our sailing companions for centuries. They are undeniably beautiful. And they belong. A picture of a ship at sea is simply a picture of a ship at sea. Static and often without apparent purpose, despite any artistic attributes it may have The most emotionally charged images of ships at sea are often of ships in danger or in combat. A picture of a dolphin at sea is a picture of uncompromised life, spirit, joy, movement, and freedom. To me, this song, if about nothing else, is a song about life. I hope this answers any questions you might have about this video. I will happily answer any others as they arise. Peace, love, and good health to you! tdalaska (terry davidson)
Not a downer, Matt Greenwade...I am sorry for your loss. At my age I've lost vast numbers of friends and family, including a daughter 10 yrs ago. Your heart will toughen up but you never really ''get over it". Keep him alive in your heart and be glad you had all the years you did. Bless you...
Have been a sailor for years, love it when sea life decides to swim along side, they will go eye to eye,at that time you know you are at peace with the world!!! Thanks
Still love this song. Now that I'm older I really get it. I always loved the music the harmonies, the words the whole song is beautiful. Too bad we cant see these guys in concert anymore.
The irony of the Southern Cross and Juneau Alaska ;-) Thanks. The scenery is beautiful. I also love living in a place where I can look up on a clear night and see nothing but the dancing of the Lights across the blacker than black sky. I am such a very fortunate woman. I don’t deserve all this beauty; it needs to be shared by everyone. I wish I could hand everyone a piece of the night sky so they’d feel that wonder, that insignificance, that frozen moment in time rendered in crystals of snow, of wonder, of muffled sound, of truly fresh air in your lungs, that indescribable state of being called contentment.
To all us who witnessed or got a glance at the Southern Cross, and decided Love was the answer, that love endures all things, the unconditional, One Love, the ultimate/intimate outlaw that the Creator blessed us with!
Anyone listening 2024 ?One of the forgotten bands, that shouldn't be profoundly talented ❤❤❤
Grew up with them (differently). Know their beginnings. Saw them several times as CSN&Y. Once at Woodstock(2). These souls will one time be saints. They might be already for all we know!!!
I listen to the songs with C,S,N again and again. One of the best bands in the world. Even if other sounds are “in” these days.
82 and still listening love the sailing songs .
@MrDRUID27 I always preferred CSN to CSN&Y... the music always felt lighter and more fun with out Young, while it seemed more agressive/political with Young...
We lost a Great One Today. David Crosby passed away at age 81. This is my favorite Crosby, Stills and Nash song “Southern Cross”. Rest In Peace.
The older I get the more I realize what a unique, special and rare time the 60's and 70's were creatively. It truly was a renaissance. I feel so fortunate to have grown up then..
me too Sir, Me too!!!
Absolutely!
AMEN, BROTHER!
Grateful Dead
Well said. This is a top 20..a remarkable period..I feel very fortunate to feel it ..
I loved my first wife dearly, we had a year together, got married in a beautiful wedding in September. I feel things so intensely.....some things are hard to bear.....i can't stop crying.
Be so very thankful to have experienced that kind of love!
The first time I saw the Southern Cross was on my honeymoon in Hawaii. The Southern Cross is still there.
I used to fly maritime patrol missions in US Navy P-3 "Orions" and one night I walked up to the cockpit of this 11-man airliner-sized four engine aircraft, and as I stepped into this small control room, all the lights were turned off at once, absolute darkness inside the aircraft.
Interesting you said an upside down bowl of stars. I think we live under an invisible dome.
That had to be a helluva view Gordon
I was an AMS in a p3 squadron, vp-16 ,nas Jax
I’d love to see that when I get my pilot license someday.
Mark Wilson Which American flag, Stars and Stripes or the Southern Cross?
392ih funny!
Old-Man Parker Both flags are American as Tennessee.
Robert Moldenhauer Thank you.
"She is all that I have left, and "Music" is her name." This song never fails to bring me to tears, even as I write this at the age of 76.
Brings me to tears as well my friend.
It is a timeless song that touches our souls, nice to know I am not the only one 💕
68 here and I have to listen to this once a week! Beautiful !!!
76 is not old; I'm 64 and agree with Bette Davis that old age is not for sissies but sometimes I feel 20 and all the better; every day is a gift and this song encapsulates that perfectly. Tx for comment my friend!
You are one great person!
He's still there with you .... I promise ...
My husband and I used to dance to this when it first came out. He was an old soul and related well to this song. Sadly, he passed when we were just married 10 1/2 mo. 36 yrs later, I still dance with him to this song.
Blessings to you.
So sorry Anna Golden . Golden was my mothers maiden name .😔
This song definitely hits your soul
It sounds that you had a true love in your life - even if for so short a time. It's warms my heart to think of that
Guess I will be the only one to mention that you STILL dance with him!? That is special, and your last name is definitely appropriate!
Quarantined here in France on my own. One daughter in London. One in Sydney with my grandchildren. So much love for them. I’m not alone here you know. I’ve got my Southern Cross too. Bless you all.
Quarantined in US, son in Alabama and daughter in Florida. I feel your pain
Im in the USA. You arent alone Ruth. We are all in this together. Much love and stay healthy!!!
Never alone sister. Your guides and angels are just waiting for you to pull them in closer so you'll communicate easier. ;)
yo en Argentina con mi hija y familia, y mi hijo en Colombia tambien con su familia, nos comunicamos por whatsapp, ya pasara, tengamos fe, Dios no nos abandona
Start preparing for your sweet reunion. It will help. :)
Will Paul carry on man!! - Sofie B.
Go Wild Willy! I'd like to follow your journey. Are you blogging any of it? Please say yes
27 years in the Navy. Seen the Southern Cross many times. Go for it! You only go around once.
Do you need a first mate?
Off the lee side of the Fiji islands..I look up at the stars and see the face of God.
Their harmonies are so amazing.
The three of them sound like a choir.
Stephen Stills - vocals, guitars
Graham Nash - vocals
Timothy B. Schmit (of The Eagles) - vocals*
Art Garfunkel (of Simon & Garkunkel) - vocals*
Michael Stergis - guitars
Mike Finnigan - keyboards, backing vocals
Richard T. Bear - keyboards
George "Chocolate" Perry - bass
Joe Vitale - drums
Joe Lala - percussion
"Seven League Boots" by Rick and Michael Curtis -- inspiration
*David Crosby had not yet reunited with Stills & Nash when the song was recorded, so Timothy & Art assist with the high harmony co-leads & background vocals
Someone posted this under one of the other videos of this song.
you are so right
Alphabet lore Is Sus
Yep 😊
My kids are 14 and 12 and they know this song is a freaking masterpiece. Raise em right with the correct music and they will turn out good. God bless.
That's too funny.
It’s true, music made me grow up differently to other people. I really do believe that. Rock on 🤘.
Bless you.
My 18yr old is currently hooked on this track!
teach your children well - well done
These 3 along with Mommas and Poppas are some of the greatest vocal harmonies in rock history. Absolutely beautiful.
Actually only Stills and Nash recorded this one
@@duaneverde9879 Realize that. I was comparing harmonies between the 2 groups. That's all.
Imagine some Stevie Nicks in this.. ❤

YOU GOT TO GIVE CREDIT TO SIMON , AND GARFUNKEL .
We never have a more influential song to believe in Jesus,.The Lord of the free
crosby was a atheist. i don't think he went to where Jesus is
My mother and father, when they were young and still very much in love, used to listen to this song. Nostalgia is a window to a time you yearn to return to but cannot. Music helps.
Oh so true... Your parents must be my age. This song brings back so many memories of my youth. I've wished too many times how much I would love to make a trip back to those care free days
@@kg5521 The way things have been recently, this is a sentiment I can understand. Thanks for replying.
Well said. Those are the words I've been looking for. Not sure if that's copy written but I'm stealing. Great song by the way !!!
@@denisefox4234 If my words in any way touched you, then thank you for spreading them. No finer legacy then a voice carried. Thank you for responding.
Uh oh, don't go full purist on us.
Diomedes01 so true
those days are gone friend...and all we have now are the memories..
Um hello, Ed Sheeran is a troll
You Godamn Right !!!! This band is awesome.
Southern Cross was my wife's favorite song she's in heaven now I play this song hopefully she can hear it rest in peace my love.
💔
You are right on!!
You know... i live in USA.... i work with a bunch of grumpy old men in a power plant in Madison Wisconsin.. the negativity is extreme.. i go to the Philippines every year.. listen to this song with my girlfriend there.. all the nice people there.. i relax.. it's the only time i get away from my crappy life here..
I was reading these comments and just thought the exact same thing.
Wonderful comment James!
+shortfacebear 63 Amen to that!
+shortfacebear 63 I was in Samoa. living in a "Fa'la (small hut) on the beach when I saw the Southern Cross for the first time, this song was in my heart at the time
wayne armstrong Nice. I served in the Navy and it reminds me of those quieter times out on deck at night.
The Southern Cross is a constellation you can see once you cross the equator. To me this song is about reaching a certain age in life when you get old enough to see things you couldn't see before.
Xaviar Thunders you would not believe what I have seen
Very Well Said!!
Sailors use the southern cross in the southern hemisphere to navigate by...in the northern hemisphere it's the northern star...known as Polaris...
I might. Try me.
Interesting way to interpret it and I like it.
While I travel across the world, this song often goes through my head.
Seen the Southern Cross from deck of two Navy ships I served on. Best time of my life.
Richard Bynum..,.WOW ☺️how good for you!! Rock on🙋🏽♀️💕
Traumatic memories of the 'shellback' ceremony? ;)
I drove seaplane in Fiji for many years; Love this song!!
Hail there you ol’ Shellback!

I have 'Visions' Little Miss Sunshine, like this morning

I'll Always Love you Hayden Panettiere.

Never realized how beautiful this song was when I was younger. Im 54 now and I finally get it.
Yeah, but we got to grow up with this, and a bunch of other great music.
What we've seen and heard over the past 5 and 1/2 decades
I'm 51 and never liked it 'til this last month.
And I’m 77 and their music still rocks my soul
I had a similar experience. I'm grateful that I did. It's a wonderful song.
So very Sorry for your Loss. As i too am Dealing with Stage 4 esophagus Cancer. May your Wife be RIP. And may you feel God's Comfort too
❤
Steve Stills unmistakeable voice, and the CSN harmonies are just gorgeous. Love the video angle showing the 3 singers in a row.
I like this song, brings back memories of riding the school bus and the bus driver jamming on all the good music. Nothing like the oldies, there will (NEVER) be good old music like ours from our generation. So (SAD)!!
Whoa? I had spaced ..thhhe schooooll bus ?? That's where I remember a lick in every song.1hr&10min sb ride k-12.grad87.thank you.
One of the most beautiful songs I have heard! Pure CSNY masterpiece! What memories ( I am 68 to but this song still rings true!
This makes me miss my Dad who is at Peace finally after suffering a bad quality of life his last years. I would give anything possible to be able to see him, hug him and tell him how much I love and miss him. You were my mentor, teacher, and hero Dad. Love, Your Son, Bob

I think this is CSN's best song. I cannot fully understand how this song was ever written and performed so perfectly. A true classic.
My husband was a huge CSN fan and introduced me to this song. It has become my favorite from these very talented gentlement.
Always loved these guys. I am 66 now and heard them first when I was 17. Best poetry of our generation!!!! Elizabeth
harmonies like the angels, it must be so special to sing together and create such magic
Congratulations! Thanks for watching!
I can never get enough of this song and have been listening to it for YEARS!
Crosby, Stills and Nash's greatest song. A classic composition (Stephen Stills) and one of the best ever recorded.
"...the promise of a coming day..."
That line brings me near tears everytime.
Beam Me Up ..God bless you and God rest her soul.
Bless you and your love one.
Bless you and your lost love my friend!
oh doll face....i am so sadd about what happened to you!!!! hang on to your love and life and kindness.... it will pull thru this... also...heaven is going to make you whole again and you will find and be with your love again.....believe in that....I was hit head on by drunks back in 1993....killed 5 people...my best friend, my 4 year old son, .....almost me....you just believe and it will be so.... ok???? hugs and prayers and love to you
So proud to be a true Australian and even better than to have the southern cross on our flag, absolutely beautiful to see in our heavens,,,,,,,,,,,,Beneath our radiant Southern Cross is in our anthem,,,,,,
The first thing I looked for when I landed in Sydney was the Southern Cross.
This song is timeless, Stills is unbelievable talent. Deserves more props
How Sad for the Human Race
maybe someone will write this good and sing this well again we have to hope
Mike Hazelwood Amen
I am so thankful I grew up when music was good like this song
I lost my wife of 33 years six years ago and this song we use to listen a lot after I finished the house and got the sound system installed. She loved how I had music throughout the house. I still miss her greatly even today.
Lost my wife to cancer 6 months ago . I feel your pain my brother. Music keeps their memory alive .she loved it🎶
Bill Wallbridge so sorry for your loss .glad we can keep the memories
I think this is one of the most evoking songs of all times
Bill Wallbridge God bless.
Bill Wallbridge - list my husband to cancer five years ago.. I’m sorry for your loss.
HEY BROTHER,
I TOO LOST MY WIFE TO CANCER. MORE

CLOSE). MUSIC HELPS...THANKS JESUS
FOR GIVING US EARS TO HEAR.
HAPPY EASTER .
Ha! After 20 years not hearing it, I still know every word! How blessed to have come of age in the 60's, when music had a soul and did what it was supposed to do!
Amen brother
And, it still can [real music]!!!!
Nowadays music is not all the best sounding songs for everyone, it is for only some ...to some it sounds like shit, too, though.
I took a ton of pictures of the southern sky with the southern cross in all of them
"...we never failed to fail...it was the easiest thing to do." One of the greatest lines ever :)
One of the best bands ever. They stayed relevant for many years and I'm glad I was able to experience their music while growing up.
Me too, we are getting old :)

I love this song❤️❤️❤️
You couldn't have said it simpler.
This song has been played in space while the astronauts were looking at the actual Southern Crux. Doesn't get any cooler than that.
It would be cooler if they were on Quaaludes

Crosby, Stills and Nash: Sweet harmonies that will live forever! God Bless C,S & N!!
An underrated group for sure. They are amazing. But Ive always loved Steven Stills guitar playing. So underrated
For some reason I never hardly heard this song back in the day, though I've always been a big fan; their music is truly archetypal and a defining sound of the 60's. Now I'm even more in awe than ever. This is one of the most beautiful masterpieces I've ever heard....
Heavenly masterpiece ❤❤❤
Harmonizing does not get better than this. I have always liked this true classic.
My brother was a great man and sailor on our ocean 🐬🌴🐳😓🙏🏻
I absolutely love CSN. I was so lucky to see them in concert many years ago and their harmonies are so wonderful and they actually care about each other. Such talent and decency.
19 , my hair was to my shoulders , sit on the beach at sunset .... smoke a really good joint. And look at the horizon line full of colors... what a joy in life to be able to listen to Steve Stills , David Crosby and Graham Nash 😎
You are correct, sir...
Super wonderful fantastic song. Great dolphin pictures
My parents came to Canada on the
southern Cross. This song always reminds me of my mum and dad.
So did my Mom from the Netherlands on the Zuiderkruis (Southern Cross in Dutch)All seem to have good taste in names for their kids.Discovered this gem of a song on late night radio and loved it ever since.
E.R. the southern cross
Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern Islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete
Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away
Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
Around the world (I have been around the world)
Lookin' (lookin' for that woman girl)
Who knows she knows (who knows love can endure)
And you know it will
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day
So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a-dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you (tied with a silver chain)
I have my ship and all her flags are a-flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name
Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world (I have been around the world)
Lookin' (lookin' for that woman girl)
(Who knows love can endure)
And you know it will
And you know it will
So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail it was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you
And the southern cross
when I listen to CSN I understand how singing is done. Not fancy computer sounds added, just voice and guitar. These 3 men showed you can make great music with just harmonizing your voices. It's almost a lost art with today's music.
There is one of the most beautiful Rock folk songs I've heard and I love it. That's all I love that song that's that
When your full of anxiety and depression, listening and watching this takes it all away.
Dr. Hugh Bumazz This song I played over and over 20 yrs ago and the next day began my first sober day. How right you are
My dad had a tape (later CD) of his favorite music for car trips that was all '60s and '70s music, so this song always takes me back to the Minnesota North Shore on Scenic 61.
born and raised there.
Awwww I love you Stephen. I have since I was 16, and I’m 65 now.
Beautiful song, impeccably performed.
yes
Love this song 😊 beautiful ❣️ this song is very spiritual ... And full of meaning .... Beautiful video
Experiencing the pristine beauty of the South Seas and small mostly unknown islands is magical.
Pure talent...never to be seen again, but will be heard forever.
I saw the Southern Cross for the first time sitting on a beach in southern Costa Rica. It's a beautiful constellation. I found myself singing this song to myself. Ive loved it for more than 30 years. My wife bought me the original vinyl, which I still possess. Lovely lovely music.
CSNY ! This troubled world needs You all back on the road again to spread the mission again !
Humanity lost it's clear spirit !
when I saw the southern Cross the first time it was from the weather deck of a cargo ship.
The officer on watch had invited me up. He also played this song while I was watching!
That was 1986, to this day when I here Southern Cross, I'm transported 30 years and thousands of miles away. Thank you for your videos, and for making an old man smile. :-)
When you see the Southern Cross you'll realize why ya came this way.
1989 USS America (CV-66). Med/I.O. Crossed the Equator in July.
I used to stare at the Southern Cross all night singing this song to myself.

Cool! Thanks for sharing.
Love this song. Always will. Never saw the Southern Cross, but Music is her Name. And you know love will endure. Thank you Stephen you have this ability to make me cry about women and life in general.
What can you say about this.It takes me back in time to those golden days of my youth. Just brilliant , C S and N at their very best.
No better song sang or sung.
Blacklist brought me to these three yet again, first it was "Our House", now this. Good Lord these guys are phenomenal.
this song was a big part of my life way before I even met my wife or had a daughter in 1995, now the song means so much more to me, my daughter moved to Australia last yr, here in Tennessee that is a long, long long way from home she is having a wonderful life there and the song i knew decades and decades before means a little more to daddy.....
My reason for the use of the dolphin images is this:
Dolphins are as tied to the mystery, grace and joy of open water as we are.

Thanks

The irony of the Southern Cross and Juneau Alaska ;-)
Thanks.
Their best song ever! Can play it all the time.. They harmonize perfectly....great sound!
