I have a late second generation Camaro that I’ve been working for a while, your expertise and knowledge is certainly very helpful in undertaking a great deal of bodywork 😊
Great to hear Mark - England sounds like a nice place to live. I love the second generation Camaro - trying to find one with a manual transmission. They are hard in OK condition here in the states. Have a good week and let me know how your restoration is going now and then :)
Good morning Jerry. I live about 45 miles northeast of London, in Essex, England isn’t so bad but the roads are really getting congested these days. I have an ‘81 Z28 the last of the second generations, TH350 with 350. She was originally a silver car with dark blue interior, years later repainted in black and a fitted with a red interior. Hi Jerry. The way you put the body filler on, I would just prime and paint, and no sanding. Looks awesome. If a person had a rust spot in the middle of a door, could one cut it out and weld in a new piece with out to much damage to the rest of the skin. I'm unsure how deep the rust is though. I dont want to get a new skin as my car is all original sheet metal, and all the glass is original all the way back to 72. I was wondering if I mig a spot, cool it with air, and keep going around the patch doing that. If it can be done, could you do a video about that too, besides the sheet metal one. In my opinion, you could absolutely get away with just this - ruclips.net/video/rPTaeH056ng/видео.html It won't ever see moisture up high on the door so you'll be fine. Might just be surface rust too - I would just grind/sand it clean, even sand blast it - look for holes - if none, tap in down just a bit and fill. Really like your channel young man. Before sanding your filler, putty or primer try spraying some guide coat on the panel first. I found it really helps me especially finding pinholes. Cheers, William
I have been using your videos to help guide me through my Maverick project. I am here in Michigan and thought it may be cool to do something together. Maybe see where I am at and if I will be able to fill and make it work.
The only guaranteed way is to get it as close as you can, give it a few coats of primer, then block sand - you'll see your low spots then - especially if you give it a quick guide coat (a light dusting of black paint). If you're using grey primer, the black will sit in the low areas as you block and will really show up at that point :)
Any filler that is affordable. Really... All filler is the same to me. It's sort of like catsup - all brands are just a tiny bit different but basically the same :)
An other great job 👍👍👍 Love watching your work. Stupid question...... I notice you almost always use a metal applicator as opposed to the soft plasticky ones. Since filler sticks so well to metal, how hard are those to keep clean.?
Sorry about the late reply. They're super easy to clean - watch this old video at the 3 minute and 30 second mark - ruclips.net/video/EPZCuPB9fds/видео.html
Hey Jerry, i was wondering, when you finish rust repair on a panel, after filler and paint work, if you apply used motor oil, fluid film, etc, behind the panel, could that oily substance creep through the welds and start to penetrate the filler and create issues? I'm a big fan of fluid film and the like to stop rust, but how does cured filler hold up to that?
It doesn't have an effect at all - here's some proof of that - ruclips.net/video/8XaZBy7GC7A/видео.html also (old vid but still has good info) - ruclips.net/video/2o37dX--w0I/видео.html
Hey Jerry, I bought a used fender to replace a damaged one. It has old paint and chips in the paint, (no dents). Do I need to sand the entire thing to bare metal or would filler primer fill in those paint chips? Or do I just sand the edges of the chips smooth then filler primer? Thanks in advance
Great ?s. It depends. If there's tons of chips, it'd be easier to strip it. If there is just a few it's common practice to feather edge (sand them smooth), prime, block, prime, finish sand, paint. You can get away with filling them with 2K putty, filler, or even lacquer glazing putty but that is frowned upon when working in a body shop.
