Titanfall 2 Critique: Time and Titans

  • Apologies for the video quality. I have Titanfall 2 on Ps4, so that's 720p footage right out the gate. Add rendering and youtube compression and you get this. RIP.
Ammendments: I gave Drydock too much praise. I Don't think it's on the same tier as the other maps I listed.
I read somewhere that a lot of the problems with T2's map design comes from the elevation. Titans will always be grounded, pilots
though are able to climb up pretty much anything. Problem is, few titanfall 2 maps have differing elevations for Pilots and
Titans, meaning Titans dominate a lot more.
About some things I said on the NPCs: I said they were a genius balancing mechanic. And they are. For the individual player. Not
the outcome of games. I don't think my originially intended comparison to Destiny or Battlefield in that regard is concrete.
Battlefield games are regularly FAR closer than Titanfall. Its got a bit of a snowball problem. That would naturally happen with lower team sizes,
and the NPCs fail to balance the teams effectively. Is there a way to do it right? To balance game outcomes without fucking
with the competetive aspects? Apparently, T2 has spawning issues, where losing teams get bad spawns consistently. I can't comment
on that. I might look in to it further.
Having watched many a Titanfall 1 V 2 comparison video, I can safely say that T2's balancing has regressed FAR more than I realised or described in the video. I still think it's an excellent sequel, but it's very far off perfect. T3 has it's work cut out for it.
Watch the T3 video I link below for more info. I don't agree with all the arguments in it. But I especially agree that T2's guns should
not be using Random Bullet Deviation, even if they still feel great.

Grapple is just so intrinsic to the gameplay that it should just be given by default, and tacticals should be weaker bonuses. Grapple simply doubles the skill ceiling of the game and that's way too valuable not to take with you. It was so important to the game's skill ceiling, that they rolled back a nerf because literally half the remaining playerbase was boycotting the game over it's then uselessness.

When killing time by going through your backlog, I saw Titanfall 2 and had to watch.
I'm grateful you gave the game the credit it deserved, because it flew under the radar for far too many people. The campaign was absolutely brilliant, and I wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said on it.
Regarding multiplayer, I very much agree with your critique of the scoring system but I do think that your assessment of the balance was very flawed. I'll not claim the balance was perfect, but I think the zoning and flow of the map design in conjunction with the pilot's inherent mobility options generated viable playstyles and counters for most weapons and abilities. Some certainly took more effort, knowledge, and skill to be utilized effectively, but not to such a degree that it would be inaccessible to the average player (with the likely exception of the Kraber).
To put it more succinctly: I think you confused a higher skill-floor with a lack of viability.
I would be surprised if you even see comments on a video as old as this, but, on the off chance that you do, I would be very curious to know if your position on this matter has shifted in the time since you made this critique.

    • @trisryan4161
      @trisryan4161 4 года назад +2

He didn't say that they weren't viable. The more "skill" based weapons are kinda discouraging to use due to it being easier to get kills with other weapons. I.e the devotion and alternator.
Like, is it really worth the effort to put myself at a disadvantage just to get better with a niche weapon when so many people run Devotions and alternators? To many people it just doesn't sit well. Especially if you just want to choose a different gun for something different.
A similar story could be said for titans.
He mentioned in this video that Ronins are people who often steal kills. And as ronin main with a rank 10 ronin, I can say that I've "stolen" my fair amount of kills. But what else am I supposed to do? The leadwall is a horrible weapon that takes anywhere between 2 to 4 reloads just to doom a titan.
Combine that with a lack of range, lack of health, only one damaging ability, and maps with Extremely long lanes like drydock, colony, Angel city, and war games. It's hard to close the distance with titans without taking damage and will likely end up with around 1/4, or even half my health gone. And this is only against one titan. Teamfights are suicide if there's a legion, northstar, or scorch. The only reason Ronin gets as much people playing him is because of the sword. If he didn't, he would barely see any play at all.
On the topic of ronin, the Stryder Chassis was actually pretty good in Titanfall 1. I would use a Quad Rocket with rapid fire and use electric smoke to make myself harder to hit and used cluster rocket to close off chock points, kill pilots in buildings, or even just for some good damage.
The dash core was amazing as well, Since I could still use my weapon while dashing. I recall a moment that I had during a match in colony. I was fighting 2 ogres in an open area and I didn't back away, I used my dash core, strayed around them to avoid a lot of the bullets they fired, and end up winning. Albeit with only a little bit of health left. But I still won despite their extra armor and guns. Because I was experienced and fast.
But it wasn't OP or anything, I was still squishy AF and had no defence, but I was able to focus on stryders strength: Speed.
The main problem with ronin is that his strength isn't speed, it's CQC.
Which works against a stryders low health pool.
The main problem with Titanfall 2 is that there isn't enough individuality besides picking an assault rifle, sniper, grenade launcher, or shotgun. And then picking a titan class.
TF1 had more diversity. In the context that this was the first attempt at this type of game.
And I feel that because of their focus to make your choices matter, they took extra care not to make certain weapons too strong.
Basicly making the individual parts of a titan or loadout weak individually, but strong when put together.
Which is something I'd love to see in Titanfall 3 when it, hopefully, comes out.

I could honestly careless about multiplayer balance cause it's easy enough to unlock everything. My biggest gripe was the menus and party system. The menus to queue for game are a cluster. Idk about anyone else but my group of friends had lots of problem getting into a game together.

@@trisryan4161 he said the snipers, shotguns and grenadiers are bad and there's no reason to ever use them. Ironically I only use guns in those classes, with the exception of the wingman elite (basically a sniper) and the alternator (I just think it's neat)

31:46 not only can you usually run away, you can just walk away and youll still get out of the blast radius on time, if not in the case of ronin you can phase dash to avoid damage, and in other titans you can deploy your smoke to retreat more safely if theres more enemy titans nearby, if the enemy titan somehow managed to compleetly corner you between a wall and his nuclear eject id say hes outplayed you, but you still can always eject even if youre not doomed, at least saving your life, i understand how bs it feels at first but you just have to keep nuclear eject in mind as a possible tactic that might be used against you, make sure youre not being backed into a corner, keep a dash ready when youre close to dooming the enemy titan, and be carefull if youre facing a northstar as they can tehter trap you and then nuclear eject, but by reading this you probably notice that theres actually quite a bit of strategy arround nuclear eject, and just popping it randomly is a waste of a perk slot.
Also about broken tacticals, the A-wall has by the longest time been my favourite to fight against, yeah im suposed to hate it because its the ''campy'' option but in reality people who use it are trading their mobility for a damage boost and a shield, and mobility is key in titanfall, you can easily flank them and get a cool trailer worthy execution on a clueless static guy, it feels like a mini boss fight, you can get oneshoted but youre just as likely to get a free kill, the grapple is very strong but offers no hard advantage like other tacitcals, you dont heal, become invulnerable or invisible with grapple, wich means that while good players will know how to stack momentum before an engagement, its the only gadjet that has no use as a get out of jail card, if youre caught out of place theres no use in grappling instad a phase shift or Awall would be way more usefull, so it trades safety for a higher skill cieling, and cloak is very easy to see its mostly usefull to reduce the amount of times you get sniped when running in the open, but you cant just cloak run arround a guy and melee him. and about phase shift, the pilot leaves a trail of particles during it, so you can easily guess were he will reapear, meanwhile he cant see you while in phase, so while its a good get out of jail card it actually puts you at a disadvantage when using it offensively, theres no tactical that you can just use to get behind a guy and get a free kill consistently, if the guy is expirienced in the game

You can get both for 20 pounds a year on origin access right now. I'm pretty sure it's 15 pounds on PSN at the moment too. It's worth every penny. The multiplayer is still alive and kicking population wise, as long as you don't want to search for the less played modes. Sad thing is, the search times for those less popular modes plus loading is still less than getting into a single game of Battlefield 1 on any mode.

I actually love the SMR in the grenadier section. That kills in like 2 rounds because it shoots micro missiles. It can also be used to damage titans and reapers. The only downside I can see is it take a bit for the missiles to hit your target, it’s not hit scan and has a lot of bullet time. But if you get a hang of leading your shots it’s awesome

The way they were able to make the game play feel so smooth, easily transitioning between a mech game and a semi traditional fps is amazing. Also, the ability to smoothly move between things like jumping, shooting, wall running, calling in your titan, killing someone as you double jump into an embark. Makes you feel like a pro even if you are last on the team. I always preferred playing frontier defense, and I could have a game where I feel like I lead the team, then end the game with 1/4 the points of the next guy. Compare that to a game like COd where if you are in the middle of the team it can still feel like you are just getting mauled.

Having points related to damage to titans would be hard to implement with the battery mechanic. What is 90% of a titans health to get 9 attrition points if a titan gets two batteries or has shield? Thatbeing difficult to put in is why I believe they didn’t do this. It is not like Respawn don’t play their own games it is clear they play around with most any system we have or can think of before the game even launched.

I bought this on launch back in 2016 and although I was enjoying it I got sidetracked and never went back to it. Was watching your video and it made me want to try it again. Looks like the stars aligned because it's currently on Steam sale for £2.49 so I bought it again. Been playing for the last four hours and can honestly say in terms of just pure fluidity of movement and control, it's one of the best FPS games I've every played. I'm not an especially skilled FPS player (in fact I usually avoid them as I'm generally not fan of the genre) but even at my basic skill level I'm able to wall run, double jump over an enemy, pop him the head and then punch his mate over a nearby ledge. It's crazy how elite the game makes you feel. The graphics also hold up very well and look great for the most part (obviously it has some iffy textures here and there due to its age), especially when it's running at 200FPS maxed out. Anyway, thanks for reminding me this game exists. I went back and beat Doom 2016 a few days ago which was also a blast and has similar movement but I think this is actually more fun to play. Good work on the videos, take it easy.

People also use sonic blade purely for montages on youtube. Also with weapon balance, yet again, on PC the balance is very different. I can tell you that when you reach the high end of the infinitely high skill ceiling each death really does seem avoidable and down to your own mistake, and you can get perfect deathless matches using the Softball, Kraber, EPG, pretty much all those guns you rarely died to on console can be OP in the right hands...
This is especially the case on PC because I can turn and shoot someone who's behind me instantly with the flick of my mouse and using the movement system and gadgets/abilities the better player almost always comes out on top regardless.

I just picked this game up a week ago, I agree with almost everything you said here. The campaign was so refreshing and unique compared to other games where mechanics can get stale after a while. Multiplayer is so addicting I can’t put it down. But I have to agree that even 5 years later balancing is still fucked, nuke eject and spitfire especially. Great video for an incredible game!

There is another reason I liked the AI in Titanfall 1. AI soldiers and pilots were indistinguishable with active radar and difficult to distinguish on sight when not on focus. Enemy pilots are mostly detected due to their movement. This means you could go into a group of AI soldiers to calm down and hide. Actually, many pilots are ignoring you when you are just not running. This means you had actually a tradeoff between walking, running and jumping. Sure, you are running/jumping most of the time but it could be handy to escape from open areas, pass a Titan or get some orientation for few seconds. This did not work in Titanfall 2 since there is much less AI and it is much better distinguishable. You will just be killed in Titanfall 2 when you are not running and jumping. However, I played Titanfall 2 some time ago and things might have changed.

I love titanfall! It has a very high skillceiling which I have sort of reached by now. (That's not a brag cause I have been playing since release) The tacticals are indeed overpowered, but that's not fully a bad thing. There are usually two battles going on: The two highest on the leaderboard vs. the two others in the air and the rest. I love that.❤

I was very good at the game at pilot to pilot, mech to pilot.
But oh boy, pilot to titan. My best times in the game.
You could destroy titans in a fun manner because you pilots are so fast and bad ass. You could actually go first to first with a mech being a pilot.
That is my favorite aspect of the game.

2023 and this video is still relevant and true,Titanfall 2 is one of the best FPS experience on the market and everyone who still doesn't have or didn't play it should do it. One thing that pisses me off is ppl praise the time travel mechanic and level and they are right to do so BUT they never mention the true masterpieces that actually properly used this mechanic those being Timeshift which used some degree of time travel and time manipulation and ofcorse the true masterpiece that first made use of this time travel storytelling and time travel puzzles and the main inspiration if not the actual copy material Titanfall 2 shamelessly ripped off that being Singularity which is an absolute masterpiece of a game which sadly as good as it is many don't know about it,it flew by so many ppl's radars and it's such a shame it's so underrated.

Hey Whitelight, first I want to say that I appreciate any video that even talks about TF2, let alone feature it, as it was my favorite game to come out in 2016. I will also say that I like your discussion of the singleplayer, although I do think you should've spoken more about the bosses, as they are also extremely memorable (ESPECIALLY Viper, who would be my favorite character, if not for Blisk). However, I think you're ignorant when it comes to your multiplayer discussion. I don't want to write five paragraphs detailing exactly why you're wrong, miss the point, or don't understand what you're talking about, as you may take it as an attack, instead of criticism. So, if you would like some insight from a veteran of not only TF2 (I have ~700 or so hours in the game), but TF1 as well, please let me know, I would be happy to give you some pointers.
also please don't recommend FrothyOmen, he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about, and panders to both the reddit community and the devs, but that's just a personal grudge on my part.

Dude, your conclusion with the video montage gave me fucking chills.i´m always talking about TF2 especially after Apex Legends release. I´ve notice that Respawn is entangling both game´s lore, since Apex Games are a sort of blood sport in the TF lore. AL can´t match TF2 fluid motion.. Jesus using the wall run with the grapler e so smooth that if they did some surf-like maps like those on Counter-Strike, I would be there a lot of time. They have to make a 3rd one. the fan base deserves it. the mp is still alive, 5 mins to find a game, but still alive.

Yea, me too. I was quite disapointed after playing the Multiplayer of Titanfall 2 the first time. While watching the video, I was also wondering if his objections apply to Titanfall 1 as well. To me, it doesn't seem so. (Better maps, more balanced, more opportunities to conquer unexpected assaults.) However, he mentioned that there were many updates already. I played Titanfall 2 not long after release. Maybe I should try it again instead of playing Titanfall 1. At the time I played Titanfall 2, I think Angel City was the only playable map and it was the first and only map that was taken over from Titanfall 1.

Scorch is disgusting if you know how to use him. Unload your entire arsenal point blank and you will melt any titan in the game in 2 seconds. Run tf away until all your abilities are back and repeat. The definition of broken, if scorch gets close to you fully charged. You. are. Dead. There is no counter I'm not over exaggerating when I say 2 seconds.

TF2 was really good. It's campaign isn't quite as good as you're saying (for example, Dishonored 2 does the time-thing better and released the same year). The multi-player I spent less time with but wasn't super impressed. Super sweaty but also didn't feel super satisfying to get a difficult kill. Maps were generally trash imo. Don't have a dog in the multi-player fight though. But a bit sick of the campaign over-hype. Respawn did some great stuff. But it's no Half-Life/Halo:CE/Bioshock/SystemShock2. Definitely worth a playthrough though.
