      Yeah same. There's a scene where Abraham, while remaining on his knees, sort of straightens his back and makes direct eye contact with Negan, holding it until Negan is the one who looks away. I think that moment right there is when Negan decided he was going to kill him, though he continued to put on a show and pretend he couldn't decide. Negan's body language is confident, but also uncertain in a way, he doesn't really want to kill any of them, but they have to pay for what they've done (That's why he is unable to decide who to kill and then selects at random). Also Rick seems so furious, like he is really afraid, but at the same time he's furious because he's utterly helpless. And you feel it with him. One of the tensest scenes ever in television, and one of the best.

It was clear in the end he intentionally chose to kill Abraham and it's because he gave Negan the most resistance particularly through eye contact. Negan realised that Abraham was giving off absolutely no sign of fear and that clearly intimidated him because it meant Abraham could be a big problem for him in the future. My favourite body language element of this scene which I'm surprised wasn't addressed is the groups reaction to the threat that one of them will die. All of them hunch their shoulders and look down, trying to avoid his attention except for Abraham who straightens his back and pulls back his shoulders, staring Negan in the eyes, presenting himself as the offering while being defiant that even that will get fear of Negan out of him. When this first aired it was because of that that I correctly guessed that Negan would choose Abraham and that the random choice was an act, he couldn't let the one guy live who didn't submit to him in the end.

  • @TheMelancholicWriter
    @TheMelancholicWriter 3 года назад +3

    Another interesting detail is that Abraham was chosen as the first kill very early. When Negan stops in front of him he sits up straight and stares him in the eye until NEGAN backs down. But to cover up for the lack of intimidation he jokes about needing to shave his beard after seeing the moustache. That coupled with Abe’s size made him the person least likely to be broken. So killing him takes away the group’s backbone and muscles all at once.
    Negan also only spares Rick because of Carl. Up until the moment he realised who Carl was, Rick’s fate was undecided. He recognised that a group able to slaughter his outpost and still remain strong despite the Saviours’ strength and numbers wouldn’t bow entirely to him. But if he broke the leader and had him keep them in line that would be easier and less bloody. Especially as whoever leads a group like theirs has to be a powerful individual, one Negan believed in his hubris he was better than.
    Obviously he should have just killed Rick anyway.

    There are much better examples of body language when it comes to Negan throughout season 7, especially when he's at The Sanctuary where he feels untouchable. The way he never breaks eye contact and leans into everyone's personal space and all the little things he does to establish dominance. People often wonder why people don't just take Negan out, and it's because of all the alpha wolf things he does to establish his utter dominance over everyone. The scenes between him and Eugene over the course of 7/8 are wonderful for body language, from both JDM and McDermitt, and obviously the scenes between Negan and Dwight as he emasculated Dwight are great too.

    Walking dead body language expert is the absolute BEST series on youtube. Look forward to these so much. Love to see ricks reaction to Lori's death. Andy Lincoln should have won an award for that. I cant wait to see Enigma break it down🖤🖤🖤

    They really did a damn good job with the camera and audio giving the perspective of getting hit in the head with a bat. That audio reverb with the repetitive hits and the scene cuts really is meant to give Abraham's perspective and it's really grueling to endure as the viewer. Then they followed up with the real visually gruesome death of Glenn. Say what you will but they really did do a good job of showing the group and the audience that the game had changed.

    Another detail I always noticed was when Negan says
    *you are so gonna regret crossin me in a few minutes*
    1:30 The look he gives right before the “mask” of the smile is almost like he pity’s them for what is about it happen as they obviously had no idea who they were dealing with and the fact it has to come to this to get them to understand.
    9:55 this makes sense and explains why Negan doesn’t seem as ruthless, savage and cold as he did in the first 2 episodes of his reveal. *cut the boy’s other eye out and feed it to his father* 🤭. Later in the season he displays a bit more compassion and leniency(his confession to father Gabriel and bonding with Carl). It was all a scare tactic.

    “Also when he moves his lips, it’s a sign of suppressing a smile” you mean... talking 👁

    • @rixisx1500
      @rixisx1500 3 года назад +2

      hes talking about when his lip quivers a little after he introduces himself, he wanted to smile knowing his victims are at his mercy, and once he tells them his name is a realization that he has them right where he wants them bringing a smile to his face that he quickly suppresses. like enigma says its the small details.

    I used to want negan dead but
    Wow I just love him now
    And the fact he's been alive long enough to have an episode of his back story
    It made me understand why he was the way he was and why he cared so much about a baseball bat

    I think this scene gets a lot of hate because of the cop out cliffhanger but the acting sends shivers down my spine. Andrew Lincoln is phenomenal here 😀

    I was waiting for you to point out how Abe rose up, puffed his chest out and looked directly at Negan. This was Abe’s sacrifice, no monologue, no inspirational speech. He spoke with his actions and saved everyone else.
    Or at least, he would have, if it weren’t for Daryl.

    I feel like I got disconnected from TWD because of this scene. I remember being SO uncomfortable when this episode premiered.
    Don't get me wrong, I still watch, still one of my favorite shows that I've watched from day one.
    But this scene was just so perfectly written, set up, acted, lit, etc. It just made me and a lot of viewers cringe. This was worse than the red wedding for me. Dammit, Glen.

    I know I'm late af but this was EPIC! I always find it fascinating when analyzing characters being played by actors, would you say it's difficult to find a baseline? I'd say it's a testimony to just how good the actors did. Can't get over how JDM managed to keep that menace to him while swearing like this. As the others have said, props to using the unedited scene.
    Edit: Subscribed mate! You make some stellar content!
