Admittedly I do get pretty depressed during the winter months, but it totally becomes awesome during the summer months because it is gorgeous with all the greenery. And even though I have lived here my entire life, I still like the rain, the sound of the rain soothes me.
Thanks for watching, and glad I could help :) I made the video because no one really talks about it, and I didn't know what to expect or how to compare it. So I wanted to give people an idea.
Portland area still gets blazing-hot sunshine from June through September. Here are only 2 seasons: drizzle season and hot season, nothing in between them. Anchorage Alaska on the other hand is partially cloudy pretty much all summer long. It is located near 60° parallel, which is a band of perpetually bad weather in northern hemisphere. Check into it.
Yup. I almost moved there, but they gave us an apartment that we hadn't been shown, basement level, one window that was a sorta of half-window where the little ditch area was full of leaves and water. There was mold in a lot of the rooms. I'm sure not everyone there had such a bad experience but it cost me my deposit and a lot of stress.
I am actually thinking of moving there because of the cloudy skies. I suffer from horrible migraines and the sun is a huge trigger. I have been suffering living in Florida for nearly 4 years and I have such a hard time with the intense sun, humidity and heat that I have basically been living like a vampire here. Any tips on good neighborhoods or ones to avoid? I need to live in the city itself because due to health issues I no longer drive. Thanks
Me and my husband want to move to Portland , and originally from so cal , we live in Vegas right now and we absolutely hate it !!! Cannot wait to leave .my question is when it does get warm and you go to the beach how warm is the water !? Also how long does it take to adjust to the climate !? I would greatly appreciate a response thank you for the video it was very informative.
loved your review, am booking a flight to visit now. planning to move there, but I am middle aged and done with raising a family- would love my grown kids to come visit though!
Sorry to hear that. It is always tough to start from scratch in a new city. Any chance you guys will stay? Could you live cheaper in other parts of Portland, ie the outskirts? I wish you guys the best!
hey gordo help me here dude , Where's this place you used to live in portland ? there with this buildings and stuff , me and my friend are thinking to move there ,and we like the style of this building complex
Thanks Nicol, We plan to not stay in MO longer than need be. I already miss the low humidity, and lack of Walmarts. We moved back because our jobs just were not cutting it. Who knows though. My wife still has 5 pending positions with IBM, and thats been for 3 months now!
mostly just portland, eastern oregon is dry southern oregon is forest and then turns into claifornya, but north portland and washington are all like this.
You have done your homework as far as housing expenses are concerned. Portland's mass transit is one of, if not *the*, best in the country, with many cities using it as a model. There are many ways to cut expenses & save money & considering Oregon has no sales tax, that is one huge benefit straightaway. I agree with you 100% about weather/light as they relate to health/wellness & have similar issues. I lived in Portland for 13 years & did not own an ac unit. I live in MN now & would ( cont'd )
Considering moving to Portland but honestly what is the point of everything being "so green" if it is gray and gloomy most of the time? I need SOME sun.
I am not sure if it is related to the weather but because the Willamette River flows through Portland, there are a lot of bridges that cross the Willamette River. There are two bridges specifically, Saint Johns Bridge and Vista Bridge (does not cross the Willamette but is located in the West Hills near Vista Point). Both of those bridges have their share of people jumping off to their death, which is sad.
I lived in Seattle for a short time and really wanted to get down there but never did. I really miss the Pacific Northwest. I'd really love to move back there one day. Portland looks much more relaxed than Seattle - more up my alley.
Hey Shab, when you say that the job market sucks there, what kinds of jobs are you talking about? Are restaurant jobs hard to get as well? Do you think there's good opportunities for a massage therapist up there? I'm so done paying $1300/month for a junior studio in L.A man, and the heat, ah the heat in California is too much, 9 freaking months of overwhelmingly hot weather.
A lot of people make it thru the winter in oregon without even really owning a coat. Its pretty rare that its so bad where a hoodie wont do. And you wont ever really see anyone use umbrellas here much because its more work than its worth.
I live in wisconsin right now and im looking for a place to live once i finish college (a masters in art therapy) and i hate it here i get depressed in the summer i hate the humidity and im looking for a place thats kinda cold all year round. i love the weather but what about the community? is there alot of crime and drugs is it a good place to raise a child?
daniel i believe that is greenbriar apartments down off barbur boulevard. I could be wrong its been forever and a half since i've been to the briar patch but thats what it looks like to me...
Tampa and Miami are in the top 10 most rainiest cities list and they are in the "sunshine" state. Seattle and Portland do not even appear on the top 10 list. So things are starting to make sense now. I've never considered mist as rain. In fact I've never worn or carried rain gear on a misty day because I don't get wet. That possibly explains all the outdoor activities available in that area. Thanks for the info. Portland here I come! :)
Portlanders/Oregonians do not let the drizzle/mist affect their activities in the least. My skin, hair, & nails were at their most beautiful when I lived there for 13 years. I aged slower there than I have now that I am back in the ( by comparison ) much more rigorous Midwest ( weather-wise ). I cannot wait to return to my beloved Oregon, the weather-wimp capitol ! lol ... I am very fair-skinned so never suffered for lack of daylight. The produce & foliage are beyond compare ! Out of this world.
Yeah, I am OK with the expense because I have suffered renting in Washington DC and Manhattan. So I won't be shocked. In fact besides the weather, one other reason I am going to Portland is that there are only so many places where it is OK to be carless and the others are WAY more expensive than Portland and/or have weather that I don't like...for instance San Fran or NYC costs 3 or 4 times as much, DC costs at least twice as much, closer to 3 times as much. Seattle is getting on towards 2 X
wow so amazing I love rain cause here in Saudi Arabia we don't have much am planning to come study in Oregon Portland just to enjoy the rain and I heard weed in Portland is easy to get without any problems with the police , is it true ? I hope my summer in Portland would be cool !!
I love the rain. I love walking and hiking in the rain. I love driving in the rain. I love sitting in restaurants and looking out at the rain. It has always been hard to find a girlfriend who loves the rain. When I was young in Paris I had a rain loving girlfriend.
I have a friend that lives in Lake Oswego and I go there from Beaverton all the time. Lake Oswego is a nice city to live in if you have a lot of money and a car.
Nicolax, there is no humidity here, and the majority of time its usually partly cloudy, make sure you have a job or a lot of savings it's very expensive here. You really don't need a car downtown the max will take you anywhere even to Seattle
How long have you lived there? Some people describe Portland as a slacker's paradise much like Austin apparently was. What's the average rent for a decent apartment where you can trust your neighbors? What has been your sense about the economics of getting by there?
Cons winter depression, lots of collage grads looking for jobs, lots of homeless, and a bit more pricy than other city's. Pro's so much to do you can ski go to the beach, and the forest all in one day.. I'll make a video on pros and cons.
The water is super cold. The beach is almost always cold, even in the summer it's almost always windy and chilly. You don't see Oregonians frollicking in the ocean much. It's a different kind of beach experience. The beach is something you have to bundle up for.
Shab. I have questions for you. I'm moving possibly in April to Portland. I'm gay. Good job. I want the Portland experience. What part of town do you recommend? Are you on twitter?
I am a New Englander.. I spent a little time in Portland.. the weather wasn't depressing.. the social climate was more than anything.. job market stunk, it was too passive aggressive for an east coaster like me and I ended up leaving. Nice place, but would be better if you could actually break in and have a life there.
Well, I heard that in the summer Portland's humidity actually goes DOWN as the temps go up and that many folks don't even have a/c also that summer is only 3 months and the rest is cloudy. Now here in FL a/c is a year round thing and so is the sun. I don't think I could handle the cold weather in AK although I could tolerate 24 hour darkness better than most people. I think I have reverse SAD. Isn't the cost of living higher in AK? I guess it is a good place to go if you are a single woman lol.
The water is Ice Cold!!! You see local kids swimming in it, but the water is usually in the 50's.. If it's 80 outside the beach will be about 70.. I grantee you will love the scenery, and the weather will be way diffrent than what your use to. I would think for the better.
I was born and raised and still live in Southern California and to be honest I'm so fed up with the constant sun. Yes that's contrary to a lot of people's tastes but I'm serious. That PNW weather calls my name.
The only people that like that weather are people from the desert. Everyone else H8s it. You can have rain all day there and yet get a half inch. It just never dries up from October thru May. The only heavy rains are around Xmas. Everything smells like mold and mildew. And he's wrong about cold there. 32 degrees with 100% humidity is freezing cold, which it is like a lot in the wet season. Go and live there for 5 years or more and tell me you like the weather. It starts to get to you badly. The locals that have lived there for a long time feel like they can't leave because PDX is so different, they can't adapt back to the real world. He can't find good food because he lives out in anywhere America, not in the city. The only reason to live in PDX is the food. Unless you like to sit inside and read all day, you are gonna H8 it there. Or unless UR a person that hikes in all kinds of weather you will H8 it there. You will love it there if you are a Racist though, or Transgender, there are as many Transgender and Gay folks in the city as there are Str8 people, and they all mix together. Don't be surprised if the person you decide to date is Transgender and you don't know it. That is the Transgender Homeland and they seem to love the weather
so we are having to move back to Missouri. its an awesome place here but extremely expensive and you definetely need a good playing job to make it out here. I would suggest having a job lined up before you move or some sort of income. .. we pay $850 for a 1 bedroom apartment.. You might be able to find an efficiency for $700.
Besides Not telling you that the town is truly infested with Lesbians like San Francisco is with "Gays". It snows every so often in winter there otherwise it rains, albeit mildly sometimes, some times heavy, almost every month the year round. In November maybe 30 days in a row, August one day. But it is almost always wet. Mildew is a major problem for housing EXTERIORS. You can walk down the street and see a house that is in disrepair and it will have big spongy mildew growing in the cracks of its siding. The cleaning of which and rain gutters would be a good task to train the ubiquitous squirrels to perform. During about 9 months out of the year it is like a gigantic locker room after the team has showered up and left. It does get cold there. The gardeners cut the lawns even on rainy days, because if they didn't some times they wouldn't have a job. There are many people who live there, who have S.A.D.. Now I personally Love the weather there, as it does keep the sort of people who like to go around half naked with combs stuck in their dos away. And the drug dealing and addictive user population is minimal, because what chance does an addict have of running amok on a cold windy rainy night in the streets without winding up either lost in the woods or alone in jail? Only an addict would be running around in the streets or parks in that weather at night. Thankfully. There is not a huge THIRD WORLD population of unwed mothers and pimps on the streets, those niches are taken up mostly by the inbred descendants of the Jack-Mormon settlers, i.e. THE POOR WHITE TRASH. Sorry Shab A, but you fibbed a little. I think you have a slight problem letting people know that you love that climate. Also the A.A. is top heavy with Native Americans, as there is a large population of same. It has taught me the old adage "Too many Chiefs spoil the Sioux"
You would be surprised how bad you feel, and your body feels when your not soaking up even a small amount of vitamin D... It feels like your inside even when your not that's the best way I can explain it.
There are tons of beautiful homes. But it's not uncommon to see people in their 30s still living at home, or 6 20 yr olds sharing a 2 bedroom place. Most people in OR aren't materialistic they are mostly cultured nature lovers. Not there are people in any city willing to over pay for clothing, but OR not so bad.
Sweden and other northern European countries are known for suicides towards the end of winter. because the greyness seems endless and triggers depression. the government introduced Sunlight bulbs in cafes etc. where you can sit and get your daily fix. to fight depression. Maybe Portland is similar with grey and long darkish winters. its never the cold or the magic of snow which gets you depressed. but the inbetween state, the lack of drama of nature, i like to say.
literally DIE without it with the dewpoints upwards of 70%, bringing daytime temps up to 105-110 degrees easily, dropping to a nice drippy 75 or so at night. There were a few uncomfortable nights there, sure, but NOTHING like the Midwest. I grew up here in MN, I know what I am talking about. Also, if you enjoy the simple pleasures of say, enjoying a sunset or an evening in your yard or garden, you can do so in Oregon w/out bugspray. Never put it on any of my children til I returned to MN.
I lived in Portland for 29 years. I love the weather, restaurants (about 1,000 restaurants in Portland), go to the coast and you'll taste seafood galore. The job market can be better, but there are a lot of jobs that people don't know about - you just gotta do your research. I don't know why you're complaining about the mist when you came from real raindrops of midwest. The weather is way better here than Manila, Philippines where I was originally from.
What are you doing??? Come on man you should have been told by now we tell people it rains 260 days a year to keep them out. Portland used to be called America's best kept secret. And like Tom Maccall said; "come visit us... just don't move here." And the weather has changed a lot from when I was a kid. 20 years ago it would drizzle for weeks strait. then summers would be 80s-100 with 30% humidity. now its average year round. I miss the real Portland rain.
You're missing a lot. During the summer, you can go camping and see the stars at night, however, in the hills and mountains are cold. Oregon is the best. Trust me, I live here. People from around the country flock here. People like being here. I still live in Portland, now Gresham, Oregon. I plan to die in Portland and have my funeral here. Hehe. LOL.
Seriously, I've been wanting so desperately to move to Oregon that these videos make me tear up. Like moving to Oregon would mean so much...
why don't you move there?
neckarsulme Im only 17.
I have 119 days until my 18th birthday about 120 until I live in Portland
Madi Murray go for it, and good luck.
Thank you very much Shab. It's extremely helpful.
Loved it. Thanks. Really summed up the weather situation exactly. Amazing.
Admittedly I do get pretty depressed during the winter months, but it totally becomes awesome during the summer months because it is gorgeous with all the greenery. And even though I have lived here my entire life, I still like the rain, the sound of the rain soothes me.
Does the constant drizzle make activities difficult? Is humidity an issue?
Thanks for watching, and glad I could help :) I made the video because no one really talks about it, and I didn't know what to expect or how to compare it. So I wanted to give people an idea.

It is a bit expensive, and the winters are depressing, but god it's awesome here. Thanks for commenting.
I'm thinking that this will be better than the 5-6 months of snow here in Minnesota.
Right about the gloominess. The sun peeks thru a lot, but there are weeks at a time with gray overhead.
Hey shab what do portlanders think of people from the UK I am going to try and visit this summer
I lived in Portland from 1999-2008. I live in Phoenix, AZ now. I do miss the fresh air. But I think I like the sunshine so much more!
Is it worth living here ?? I'm from San Diego it's clean for the most part and good weather but a bit expensive..
Thanks
I have never in my life seen anything more beautiful than the Pacific Northwest.

Preciate the video bro, I was just thinkin bout chkn out Oregon to.. since you mentioned the job scene there, IDK..? Does look beutiful there tho(-"
Thanks Nicol, We plan to not stay in MO longer than need be. I already miss the low humidity, and lack of Walmarts. We moved back because our jobs just were not cutting it. Who knows though. My wife still has 5 pending positions with IBM, and thats been for 3 months now!
Are there a lot of mosquitos?
mostly just portland, eastern oregon is dry southern oregon is forest and then turns into claifornya, but north portland and washington are all like this.
there seems to be a ton of pollution in oregon, and what's with the arsenic in the soil? i guess i was a little disillusioned about moving here..

This winter was the coldest I've ever seen it here.
This video is actually very useful.
It's actually Rock Creek in Hillsboro.
So is the weather in Portland similar to Seattle?
Yeah, pretty much. But a little more greener, (mossy kinda).

Portland is pretty top.
My hubby and I are considering a move from the Tampa Bay area. So sick of the humidity here!
This guy is telling the truth Lived in portland for 44 years, And moved to a place that had sunshine!!
Portlanders/Oregonians do not let the drizzle/mist affect their activities in the least. My skin, hair, & nails were at their most beautiful when I lived there for 13 years. Lightning and thunder is awesome, screw non-stop mist and gloominess, it's just depressing.
GOOD FISHING!!!!

Exactly. Please do not come to Portland. Stay away. It is so darn gloomy. Please stay away for 'our' sake.
I am packing my bags to go to Portland.

I'm so spoiled by Portland.
I can't stand humidity and the slightest bit of anything close to humidity I die and won't go outside.
Ooo what's that a 12 mile difference from Hillsborough to Portland?.. Ps it's actually Tanasborne know your area.
so we are having to move back to Missouri. its an awesome place here but extremely expensive and you definetely need a good playing job to make it out here. spell Hillsboro right. I actually recognize the apartment building, I used to live there. Rock Creek 185
we meaning Shab and I... Got laid off and can't find work and already have interviews lined up in Missouri. dont have a choice.
lol this video is pretty good and accurate. The oregon coast is incredibly overrated to me, but the rest is spot on.
thank you
Don't move here. We have enough people. Stay where you're at.

My dad used to live in those apartments! xD
Oregon weather, you basically get 2 months of summer and 10 months of Spring.
Good Job ..
literally DIE without it with the dewpoints upwards of 70%, bringing daytime temps up to 105-110 degrees easily, dropping to a nice drippy 75 or so at night. Never put it on any of my children til I returned to MN.
thanks yo!
lol it snows like1 cm a year if that in Oregon
I lived in Portland for 29 years. I love the weather, restaurants (about 1,000 restaurants in Portland), go to the coast and you'll taste seafood galore. The job market can be better, but there are a lot of jobs that people don't know about - you just gotta do your research. I don't know why you're complaining about the mist when you came from real raindrops of midwest. The weather is way better here than Manila, Philippines where I was originally from.
Hey Gyn say Couch street the right way :)
If you have any questions please leave one I will do my best to answer them
No you really don't get wet.. And there is NO humidity there.
the guy seriously said "expecially"???????????????
it made me shudder too.
Hopefully you pronounce Tomato, Potato, Sword, and Schedule correctly then.
ha i live near there!
It is actually spelled Hillsboro not Hillsborough.
Hehe. LOL.
The first clip is in Hillsboro, not Portland. Get your facts straight.
pls dont move here
Portland is a trash gutter
then you shouldn't move to portland.
Dude, fuckin seriously. West coast bullshit.
And a JOB lol.
