The module has a series of pads with poly aftertouch which, after a bit of practice, are still very very enjoyable. You won't be doing fast trills on them, but usually polyAT is fun on slow Enyaesque things :-)
If you have a poly aftertouch controller then that ribbon costs £400 over the desktop, worth it if you need it - but not if you have a MPE/ribbon controller already, which is better for sliding to exact pitch.
@@watercolourmark The ribbon costs 400 over the desktop? What about the cost of the poly aftertouch keyboard? Not an accurate statement of the cost difference and breakdown between keyboard and desktop versions
Man, I loved watching you geek out on this synth. Of all the videos I've watched of this awesome unit yours is the most revealing. The fact that you are able to hit very basic factory patches, and see/hear an appealing use for the sound in a context says soooo much. So many many play a quick snippet of a factory patch, and move on without any experimentation. That type of video doesn't do this synth any justice. Kudos to you for this!
Everything except long ribbon line looks like a kind of regular contemporary analogue polyphonic synth. OK. Polyphonic Aftertouch is something new. Usually Aftertouch is global, and influence all played keys.

"I only have one word.. 1 Respect.. 2 Wow" Thanks so much Claudio. Your videos always put a smile on my face and congrats with the new studio. All the best.
I knew as soon as I saw the early demo videos for this synth that I had to have one. I put my pre-order in early at Sweetwater and I got one of the first batch, in early January. It very quickly became my favorite synth. The keybed is just creamy and gorgeous, and the polyphonic aftertouch is tuned perfectly - best I have ever used. It makes the synth an incredibly expressive and playable INSTRUMENT, not just a synth. The keybed is so great that I often use it to play my other synths, particularly synths like my MODX that will receive and react to poly AT over MIDI, but don't actually have a poly AT keybed. I didn't really care about the ribbon controller, I figured it was going to be more of a gimmick than anything else, but I was totally wrong - it adds another whole dimension, and is eminently playable. I use it all the time! The build quality is outstanding, it's solid and confidence inspiring. The support from the manufacturer has been outstanding (I found a bug and reported it on the Hydrasynth Facebook group, where manufacturer reps read and post regularly - they issued a firmware update fixing the bug just a few days later!). And of course, the sounds....what made me want it in the first place. Incredible sounds, it can sound like a Moog analog, or it can sound harsh and digital, or anywhere in between. Sound design on it is simple and FUN, and the mod matrix while very complex, is easy to understand and manipulate. LOVE LOVE LOVE this synth!!!!!
Got mine November 2020. Haven't used it enough. Really should use it every day. I could even learn how to program analog on this digital synth! I live those broad black keys too. Gorgeous keybed.
As a classical/jazz pianist I could never really connect to any synth, they are just some stupid keyboards with noises and stuff. But I got the ASM Hydrasynth Keyboard a month ago and can't stop being impressed by it! I can program it (and I'm pretty novice at synths!) and as a pianist I love the poly AT, the good keys and the ribbon and all the great and weird sounds and possibilities. It's just the best non-piano keyboard I've ever had and it's a lot of fun :)
Eventually, everyone will become part of the collective. You will be assimilated. The keyboard is like physics, all other areas can be expressed by the right keyboard, and this is the soundtrack king. I could not believe this was not analog, but the aftertouch, the aftertouch. Crescendo, chord development, yes, orchestra in the box. I'm sure the next place this goes is a voice for each section. Can you imagine? Timpani on aftertouch. I mean, yes please.
...And that's why you are having trouble, you are mistaking a Keyboard with a Synthesizer. Most entry-level keyboards do have sounds and those are mostly just to mess around, but a synth is completely different, from the way you generate the sound to it's capabilities. A regular digital piano of today's uses like 128 samples for each key, however most synths are NOT sample based, meaning that the sound it generates comes from the Oscillators (or in the case of FM, modulators). - Now, any Roland synth from the 80's can do similar stuff as this thing does. Junos, Jupiters, whatever. If you want something cool, portable and with similar playfulness now-days the Reface series from Yamaha are pretty epic too.
it's great to see how you enjoy it while you test it, the spontaneity of the reactions without any filter, without editing. Naked and raw. Now I want a Hydrasynth, I am much more convinced.
The moment at the end that it is clearly visible this synth left the very Doctor Mix simply speechless... Priceless. :] Congrats on the new synth, Claudio! :)
How exciting - I wanted one before they were launched. Played with one a little at NAMM 2020 but didn’t fall in love. I know I didn’t give it much of a chance and plan to revisit it again soon - so thanks Claudio for doing this 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
the synth in that segment didn't do anything you can't duplicate on Roland synths or VSTs - mind you, without the ribbon, you'd need an expression pedal or automation instead
I love a versatile digital synth with a great interface like this. I love that it can effortlessly morph between waveshapes. I hear zippering on portamento and the sound is somewhat fatiguing, but overall it seems like a very useful synth. I'd like to see a comparison with the Novation Summit. By the way, I haven't been able to give up my Kurzweil K2000S, and the amazing keybed with polyphonic aftertouch is one reason I'm still using it. Also, it's 16-part multi-timbral.
I got a Waldorf XTK-30 a few years ago that I love to death, and told myself I wouldn't need any other digital synth after that one (it's awesome), but the Hydrasynth caught my attention hard the first time I heard it. And now here you are having a blast on one. Pretty sure you did a video about the XTK a while back, and that made me a subscriber. Now I think today's video might make me a Hydrasynth owner. Your joy is infectious! :)
Jenna Fearon not sure if I recall that the microwave xt responds to poly AT , but was thinking how cool this would be to pair and layer with my microwave 1 version A. I would also love to use the poly AT from this keyboard with my other synths including my Q rack as well!
I had the same exact reaction a month ago when I got my HydraSynth. Its a beast and fits in my collection brilliantly. Def a "desert island" piece of kit :)
The Hydrasynth for me is the best digital Synth around, is years ahead of others. Claudio I told you before and I insist, find a bigger place you are in non-stop mode now. Enjoy!
I would agree to “best digital synth under 3000 €”, and this is a real feat by ASM. In a higher price range, the Quantum is probably even more powerful and versatile.
I can definitely say that ASM is in my heart with Moog. One for digital, the other one for analog. I cannot wait to see what ASM will do in future. If they produce only stuffs like that, I will buy everything. Receiving mine Hydrasynth this Monday. I’m fucking impatient.
9:30 - 13:58 The sound that gives me chills and goose bumps... Claudio: I could listen to this thing all day. Me: I totally feel the same way. It's really fantastic. And what a way to begin, by playing "Vangelis - Chariots of Fire"! Claudio has some impressive skills and a great inspiration.
Wow, reminds me of my old Alesis only..evolved. I had Poly AT on an Ensoniq SQ-80 back in the day (90s) and always longed for it ever since. The expressiveness you can get with Chords was incredible. This is certainly one to look out for.

The price tag is huge, but so is the sound. I was surprised even more than Claudio, when he played the first sound. Gosh, DX7 was my life goal, but as soon as this video ended, it changed.
The price tag is really not that huge when you realize it's so much cheaper than other synths which it is so much better than. IMO it is priced very fairly.

What bullshit?! The Hydrasynth is the first synth which impressed you.. where have you been over the last 50 years....
...And that's why you are having trouble, you are mistaking a Keyboard with a Synthesizer.

Now, any Roland synth from the 80's can do similar stuff as this thing does.

🔥CHARIOTS OF FIRE🔥
aka “Titles”
Damn dude, that was honestly gorgeous!
I think the patch was actually supposed to evoke the "titles" from _Blade Runner,_ but both films were scored by Vangelis. 🤘
The GAS is strong with this one! It has almost an analog vibe to it. With poly AT + ribbon, it's so expressive too!
Enjoyed like crazy how u enjoyed this beast. Listened with headset was absurd ! Impressive , what the hell !, ciao Cla 🎹🇮🇹🎹
capito? :) Ciao amico 🙌
The moment at the end that it is clearly visible this synth left the very Doctor Mix simply speechless... Priceless. :] Congrats on the new synth, Claudio! :)
""Blade titles""... that's the name of the preset..."
Do it, Claudio, DO IT!
Love your personality. Never change.
How exciting - I wanted one before they were launched. Played with one a little at NAMM 2020 but didn’t fall in love. I know I didn’t give it much of a chance and plan to revisit it again soon - so thanks Claudio for doing this 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
OMHG, this was the best episode I have seen on this channel so far. Please do a live stream with this instrument, PLEASE
17:15 my wallet just broke down crying. I'm an ambient guy and my wallet is scared.
the synth in that segment didn't do anything you can't duplicate on Roland synths or VSTs - mind you, without the ribbon, you'd need an expression pedal or automation instead
Just love your vids! Your talent is boundless! Really enjoy your happy energy! Thanks man!
I really love and envy the way you improvise harmonies and melodies. Amazing.
Had to sell my Waldorf MicrowaveXT to buy my Hydra..................I absolutely LOVED my Microwave, but I have to say - no regrets!!!!!
I can only describe this as a legit texture in my ears, it's a powerful effect, inspiring even
I actually really appreciate you showing us how you set everything up so we know exactly how you're using the synth
Your joy brought me joy. It also brought me my own Hydrasynth. Thank you man!
Wow coool!!!!!
I need a whole 3 hour+ video of him just playing about with this thing
I had the same exact reaction a month ago when I got my HydraSynth. Its a beast and fits in my collection brilliantly. Def a "desert island" piece of kit :)
someone needs to loop that part where he takes the box out of the box so he keeps pulling boxes out of the box.
Your joy is infectious 🙏
The Hydrasynth for me is the best digital Synth around, is years ahead of others. Claudio I told you before and I insist, find a bigger place you are in non-stop mode now. Enjoy!
I would agree to “best digital synth under 3000 €”, and this is a real feat by ASM. In a higher price range, the Quantum is probably even more powerful and versatile.
REV2 is also incredibly powerful for it's price.
Only in a world where Waldorf Iridium doesn't exist.
Really loved the way you absolutely didn't have to RTFM to totally enter into the groove of this fabulous machine. Brava, Claudio!
I can definitely say that ASM is in my heart with Moog. One for digital, the other one for analog.
I cannot wait to see what ASM will do in future. If they produce only stuffs like that, I will buy everything.
Receiving mine Hydrasynth this Monday. I’m fucking impatient.
May I ask what was your experience since that comment with that synth? thank you
9:30 - 13:58 The sound that gives me chills and goose bumps...
Claudio: I could listen to this thing all day.
Me: I totally feel the same way. It's really fantastic.
And what a way to begin, by playing "Vangelis - Chariots of Fire"! Claudio has some impressive skills and a great inspiration.
Sounding like Ray Lynch "Deep Breakfast" around 14:36. Lovely synth!
What a joyous video, we felt your love, Claudio. And definitely best heard with headphones.
9:30 was a crime not to play the blade runner main titles, especially with that touchstrip!
So fun watching you experiment and be excited by the sounds this machine is capable of producing! Thanks so much for this review!
The GAS is strong in this guy :)
Very!
Hahaha
"Welcome to Dr Mix, the channel where I buy the synths so YOU don't have to"
The only problem is I end up wanting everything Claudio demos!
City
@@Doctormix How many keyboards do you have in your possession?
Sounds just as good as the analog synths. I'm impressed.
I'd love to see you make a psychedelic progressive synth track with this synthesizer. Could be beautiful
Had one for about a month now - best synth in a LONG TIME...!!
-Me: Is it another synth what I see young boy? 😏
-Claudio: Nooop 1:00 it’s a matrioshka!! 🕺🏼😎
Wow, reminds me of my old Alesis only..evolved. I had Poly AT on an Ensoniq SQ-80 back in the day (90s) and always longed for it ever since. The expressiveness you can get with Chords was incredible. This is certainly one to look out for.
I just rewatched 18:22 like 10 times :) sounds so good.
Me too! But i don't know song name. You know? Please tell me! I love this song!
Me too
Me toooo
Man, after watching your demo, I finally got a hydrasynth..... it's an amazing synth....
I got one and took it to piano lessons. She was like "uh, no".
lmao.
Very good thangs of mex. Cancun
You lugged a Hydrasynth to your piano lessons?? Respect ✊ And this is coming from someone that had an Alesia Andromeda A6 which was roughly 50 kg maybe a little less
@@sawtooth808 I use to carry my Tyros 5 88 keys in a flight case up and down 3 flights of stairs every weekend and drive 200 miles to work on ONE song for an Artist that later got rejected by the company. The song was performed only once.
Quality instrument with the potential for unique composition and ideal for film scoring theme based incidentals 🎵🎶👍
I have the desktop version, and it has quickly become one of my top synths, up there with the Peak, and Pro2. A classic. We all love analog, but digital needs a lot of love, too--it might be entering its golden age.
That synth's 1st voice - immediately took me back 40+ years to Blakes 7 - opening theme - esp the last two chords:
ruclips.net/video/hMsvrS2IeXQ/видео.html
IT IS THE SAME VOICE ! - Sent shudders down my spine
I love the absolute joy you show when playing that keyboard. Sweet :)
I’ll be honest with you Claudio, the very first time I watched one of your videos (RUclips recommended) I didn’t like you at all. I’m so bloody glad I ignored this and stuck with you and subscribed. I now think you’re bloody awesome dude. My apologies for being a tit at the beginning. I always admit when I’m wrong, and that time I was very wrong.
I had a similar first impression. Now I love this guy. Awesome energy and personality.
at first I didnt liked the rings on his fingers, no I like how his fingers let the stuff rings
He just gets super excited. I've always liked him for his passion. He's like the hyperactive cousin you can't do without.
Same
OMG those pads at 13 mins made me have goose bumps. Thanks Doc. Hope you're well?
The price tag is huge, but so is the sound. I was surprised even more than Claudio, when he played the first sound. Gosh, DX7 was my life goal, but as soon as this video ended, it changed.
The price tag is really not that huge when you realize it's so much cheaper than other synths which it is so much better than. IMO it is priced very fairly.
Excellent demo. Claudio, you have an extraordinary ability to hear a patch and "gel" with it. I've watched many reviews of this thing and yet I feel like I'm hearing it for the first time. Kudos.
Like for "Матрёшка" 😸👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

1:00 "Matryoshka" for the Englishmen… ❤️
P.S. Your profile picture looks like a Renaissance painting of Trent Reznor holding a boombox made of dark matter…
This is the best sounding synth I've ever heard. Thank you for sharing
The sound is so "warm", like an analog. Incredible.
I use my Hydra on everything! Best new synth model ever 🤘
hav you tested the alesis quadrasynth?
I really recommend this.
it has lovely sounds and drums from the classic legendary alesis sr16.
it’s as Beautiful as the korg m1.
i really recommend it.
I've got a QS+ that I've had for many years and I have used it a ton, and probably will never get rid of it, but this Hydra is on another level.
I've still got a QS7 :-)
Best ad ever, i'm buying this soon for sure
This is like what the microwave was to the electric oven. I wish I had a spare $1300 lying around on my bed. I wonder what the aftertouch would sound coverted to the breath control of the wind synth? You wouldn't happen to have a wind synth instrument to play with to try it out?
🎷👍
Haha well ... did you ever hear the RadiTec Accelerator shine? - anyway sounds creamy as f***!!
i discoverd this synth yesterday - and wahowww...all the demo i've heard, showed me an incredibly sound's vibe with this Hydrasynth. Thanks Claudio for this show!
The Hail HYDRA synth! Luckily Captain America retired otherwise it would've kicked that synth in half 😎
Very very excited - just bought one of these and waiting for it to arrive tomorrow. Big purchase for me Claudio, my first stand-alone piece of outboard gear I have bought in nearly 20 years! All thanks to this review.
