Clearing up the history a bit:
The Cyrillic Script was created by two Bulgarian monks, brothers St. Kliment of Ohrid and St. Naum of Preslav, these are two Bulgarian capital cities (Ohrid & Preslav).
Both were disciples of St. Cyril in the First Bulgarian Empire. They were commissioned by Tsar Boris I to standardize all of the slavic tongues within the borders of the Bulgarian Empire which included 7 proto-slavic tribes. At this time, the majority of the Bulgarian population was Slavs, the Proto-Bulgar royal class was slowly replaced by Bulgarian Slavs.
Anyway, these brothers were tasked to simplify and standardize the slavic language within the Bulgarian Empire, which is known as "Old Church Slavonic" aka. "Old Bulgarian" - they also were responsible for creating the original Cyrillic alphabet based off of the Glagolithic alphabet created by Cyril and Metodius. The first bible was translated into a Slavic language was by the brothers into Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic) using the Bulgarian Alphabet (Cyrillic).
Another interesting fact, is that Bulgaria was the only NON-ROMAN country to ever receive the title of CAESAR (King/Tsar), officialized by the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium).
The word "Tsar" is a Bulgarian word coming from Caesar.
Finally, the Modern Russian language and the Modern Bulgarian language evolved simultaneously and together, however in the middle ages, between 800-1100 AD, the Russian nation was first formed in about 1000 AD, the new Bulgarian language (Old Church Slavonic) and the Cyrillic script, was given to the Russians by Bulgarian monks. After Bulgaria fell under Ottoman Rule in the 1300s, Bulgaria started to lose alot of the original vocabulary and replaced it with Turkish words. So, when the Russian freed us from 500 years of Ottoman Oppression, they RE-INTRODUCED so called "Russian" words back into the Bulgaria language that were lost over time... So, I personally do not consider the vocabulary in Modern Bulgarian to be Russianized, because a majority of the words were originally Bulgarian to begin with.
P.S. we have hundreds of tongue twisters in Bulgarian man :D You coulda easily googled some. Here are a few popular ones:

A century, or rather 120 years ago, one would have the remainder of Accusative in-a for male names: like vidjah Ivana, since then, only pronouns have an accusative and dative form
