- Vanda orchids can come in a multitude of colors and patterns and their flowers are considerable large. They produced multiple flowers on a single flower spike, that can extend up to 30 cm in length. It's easy to see why this orchid fascinates orchid growers from all over the world. The question is, can any of us grow this orchid in our houses and even apartments? the answer is yes, it's quite easy to do so if you are prepared to make room in your life for a Vanda orchid.
The most important factor to take into account is light. These orchids are some of the most sun and light loving orchids. They can withstand even direct sun much better than other orchids. Try to find a very bright place in your home or growing area, like a southern exposure. Morning sun is ideal as it is not very hot, depending on the season and climate. Usually hot noon sun is to be avoided if temperatures are warm. Even Vandas can obtain burned leaves if they are not adjusted to the sun, but a good idea is to use a sheer curtain to block some of the sun's rays and reduce its intensity. The light will still be bright, but the leaves will not get hot to the point of burning.
Temperature is another important factor to keep in mind, these orchids are, in the majority of cases, intermediate to warm growing orchids. The ideal temperatures for these orchids span from about 22-23 deg celsius to 27-28 degrees celsius. Although extremes can be tolerated easily, they are not ideal. I believe this orchid is very well suited to warm and sunny environments rather than cold ones.
Watering this orchid is the most crucial aspect of its care in my opinion and it is important to understand, as it holds the key to keeping this orchid healthy and make it bloom regularly. As I was saying, this orchids likes to have its roots very well aerated. But keeping it properly hydrated is an absolute must. In a normal home I found that soaking this orchid once a day maintains it healthy and in good condition. You can use a bucket in which you can place the orchid for about 10 to 15 minutes every day, preferably during the morning hours. In normal homes the air can be too dry, so spraying, or even showering the roots has proven to be insufficient, at least for me. I have filmed a video in which I show the process and talk a bit more about how to know if your Vanda needs water, just visit this link • How to water Vanda orc...

Thanks for your videos Dani. Really helped me on my orchid craze.
About 5 weeks ago I was gifted a phalaenopsis. Then I watched your vid and I went crazy and have about 10 - 15 now. Then I watched your Cattleya videos and I have about 6 lol.
Now I'm watching your vanda video.... oh dear guess what's going to happen now?
you are an orchid lover just like me Danny got me obsessed and yes i just got my first vanda thats y am gere 😍😘
I'm so happy you put this up! I finally got a vanda orchid and I put it in a wooden basket with a tiny amount of sphagnum, you should look up the flowers because they are absolutely gorgeous. The name of my vanda is Roberts Delight Red
What a cute new intro song! I love it! I am gearing up to buy a vanda sometime because my room has so much sunshine now!
Edit: This video was fantastic and so helpful! I'm sure it'll get many thousands of views over the coming months and years- it is a recipe for success!!
+Astrid awww thank you dear :D I can't wait to see a Vanda at your place I know you'll love it :D do you have anything in mine? like a big vanda or one of the small hybrids? gawd I cannot wait to get my greenhouse, I have no space for them here they just hang on strings and get into my hair :))
I really want a vanda pachara type hybrid. The pink pachara variety is a dream for me, but I would get the pink and the "blue" one and I think that would be perfect for me. I will probably have to hang it from my curtains because it will be so large!
I don't want too many vandas, though!
+Astrid I think 2 would be enough for now :D yep the Pacharas are a great hybrid hope you find one!
I really hope my next show has a Vanda :) great video! I bet a lot of people will find this video very helpful!
+Arib Hassam thanks, I hope this video helps :) these ones are those types of orchids that are not overly complicated :)
Yes I agree. Just give it a quick soak every now and then and you are good to go :)
+Arib Hassam yep and also fertilizer! they like their food :P
I love your videos, you explain everything so well, thank you!!
I was quite devastated this morning when I accidently knocked off my blue vanda and broke the a new spike😥. I only bought it this year at half price, and I was absolutely delighted when it put out a new spike a few weeks ago. I had been caring for it like a mother hen with one chick.
Well I have to be patient till it puts out another spike.
Your Vanda's are gorgeous, And have beautiful flowers, And this is another video for my list, I always find your video's so informative and helpful. :-)
+Rosemary457 thank you, glad you enjoyed this video :D
Your new music sounds like an instrumental version of the 1960s song "Out in the Country" by Three Dog Night(an Australian group). As usual, a "Thumbs Up" for your video
+DrinkingStar it could be, it's just a song from the youtube royalty free music data base :)
Thank you Dani! (Apologies if I spelled your name wrong) I love vandas but they make me nervous because they need so much sun, air, and water. I have 4 and still want more, every time I see your Bangkok Sunset I want one!
+twistedyogi13 they were intimidating for me at first too, especially because I paid 40 euros for my first Vanda :) but everything went well :)
Just in time! Thanks Danni!
+Samantha's Orchid & Dog Diaries you're welcome :D
Very cool Danny Vandas in my opinion one of the easiest to grow , they are just water hogs but they are quite tough
+Growing Things yep exactly :) and well light :P
thanks Danni useful video,
+Chitra Coulton Glad you liked it :)
Very informative! Already got 5 vandas now,two of which are vanda sanderiana.hope you also do some caring in vanda seedling cause i have 2 of those,is it better to keep them mounted or keep them potted?😄
+Aji Gigante it all depends on your environment and yourself :) golden rule is: you have time to water and keep an eye on your mounted orchids? you can mount them and you might have an easy life. You don;t have time and furthermore your environment is pretty dry? mounted orchids will be hell for you :P that's why people sometimes pot orchids, ease of care and moisture retention ;)
Thank you! Yes i keep my seedlings on mounted position and i soak their roots in water for 10 minutes everyday same as their adult counterparts. 😊
I love your videos. Can you make video about the humidity because I can't provide higher humidity. My humidity is around 30-50% all around the year. What is your humidity? Because you have amazing orchids specially phalaenopsis. I have only phals and one Vanda but not in good condition. Thanks
Hi Danni can you make video like that for phalaenopsis orchids. I love your videos. Thanks
I loved this video but I have a question. I made the mistake of planting my Vanda and cutting back the roots. Now I see it has 5 new roots coming out, thank goodness. My question is what do you suggest I do to promote bigger leaves and secondly, should I cut awake the trunk that was left when the old roots died? My leaves aren't as long as seen in this video.
hi...great videos! crazy queastion, is it ok to cut/trim healthy roots that are too long?
Very helpful video. I have a Vanda that has been in bloom for over a month. I noticed this week that one of the "top" leaves is turning yellow. It's in semi-water culture. The plant has weak roots so I was surprised when it bloomed. What could the be?? Please help.
Excellent Danny!! I like your Vandas and they're super big when blooms.. I've one question though, are the mini Vandas and their other varieties(assocenda) could be fragrant sometimes?
Love,
Puja
+teetir1981 yes they can be, my Rhinchorides is fragrant, Rhynchostylis and Aerides usually are, not sure about Ascocenda but there could be some fragrant species.
Dear Miss Orchid Girl! I love your videos! I have a Vanda and I have not adapted to the care it needs. I think I need to pot it. Is the a way to pot them? Is there a way not to water them every single day?! I really can't handle this much attention. Would a simple bucket help? Moss? Can I pot it like other orchids? Thank you!
I have a rootless vanda, the roots rotted because I soaked for too long I think. I cut the stem back to live tissue and sealed it with cinnamon. Then I sprayed the whole plant with hydrogen peroxide and bagged it upside down in a transparent drawstring bag, suspended in the shady side of my conservatory. Do you think I'm doing the right thing and is it likely to survive?
Do they need a winter rest?
i love vandas..
+Envenomer J ysssss me too :D
I would like to know how to fertilize my new Vanda orchid. Is there a liquid fertilizer that can be added to the water when soaking it? My new Vanda(dark purple, like the one in your video) is in wooden hanging box, with the roots completely exposed, there is no way to use a dry fertilizer. I look forward to your guidance on this. Thank you, Diana
Hello, I was wondering how to care for my vanda flower spike after it has bloomed. Do I trim it back or leave it alone? Thank you :)
I would love to get a Vanda one day! I had an idea the other day. I thought it might be a good idea to mount one on a large piece of wood with some Spanish Moss, and almost upside-down to prevent crown rot. Do you think this can be done with an orchid like the Pachara Delight?
+1920pam Hi yes it can be done, but I suspect Vandas will try to turn their crowns upwards to face the light :) I might be mistaken but do research it first to see how to better position it
Hey, i have this Asconcentrum miniatum, its a Vanda hybrid that i bought in spring, and i put it in an airy mix of bark chips and sphagnum moss. I got it out today and all the roots were brown and hollow, i could pull the outer layer of the roots right off, but the leaves are looking lush and green as always, is it possible to revive it if i let it hang and water by soaking?
Can I plant my seedling in leca? Will it be able to adjust?
Do you recommend using a drip watering system for Vandas?
I bought a Vanda Sansai Blue at an orchid show that was being kept in a pot. When I got it home I knew they are meant to have roots that are open to the air and when I took it out the roots had started rotting at the ends. Sadly two month later all the roots have shrivelled and I've had to admit defeat :( it's only down to three green leaves and not a single new root.
+Amrita Mohanty I'm sorry to hear :( what happened to the roots? did the fungus destroy them? a hydrogen peroxide 3% spray might have helped so you know in the future. Also right now it needs moisture. Ok, try to find a vase, place wet sphagnum moss at the bottom and place the vanda inside, not touching the moss but just to maintain humidity around its stem. Also be careful to watch for rotting on the axis, loss of leaves sounds suspicious. A picture would help if you could upload it to flickr or photobucket or even g plus and share it in a link.
+MissOrchidGirl Sorry for the late reply! The roots shrivelled and dried up completely. I don't think there was any fungus. I was dunking the roots in water and spraying them twice daily. All the leaves went yellow and fell off. When there were two leaves left and no roots and no sign of new roots I called it quits.
Hey Danni, I live in SFL - actually the Keys. Where can I get slow releasing fert to put on the orchid? Mine are on Christmas Palms. I am getting ready to put 2 more on the palms. Thank you.
How to fertilizer my vanda orchid
Hi Dani and viewers, I have a Vanda that is overall very healthy and has new root and leaf growth. It just stopped flowering so I cut the flower spike. Now where the stump of the spike is, it is turning the leaf around it and above it brown and yellow. What do you think is causing this?

Hi, yes they can, usually on the lower part of the plant :)
+MissOrchidGirl hi again, is this a root or a spike?:)))) coz it grew in between the leaves and the stem wherw the spike usually appears.:)))
www.flickr.com/gp/141489608@N06/76p1rt

Hue hue.. Now I finally know how to get better vandas than my grandma and rule the world. >:D

+Astrid well film woman film!!! aight, that's it.. I can't buy orchids for now but I sure can buy perfume! *goes to sephora and splurges her account away..
I'll have to film tomorrow haha. I got some other orchids as well. :)
+Astrid I just got a mature sanderiana too weeeeee!!!:D Danny it's your turn lol:D
how can I promote roots in my vanda?
+Joauo Agosto Hi, well I think for most orchids moisture is what helps with root production. But since Vandas are not usually potted, I would suggest that you try to place the base in a vase, or container, where humidity is higher. This depends on how the Vanda looks like now and if it can be placed somehow in a vase with the base. So let me know more about your vanda, a picture would help too, just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
Can I repot a Vanda that is too large by cutting it in half
no no no!!!
I live in the tropics, can i grow vandas ?
Hi, yes you can 😄
@@MissOrchidGirl oh ok
@@MissOrchidGirl any chance you have tips to grow a vanda teres orchid/ vanda miss joaquim orchid ?
No sorry I don't have that orchid
@@MissOrchidGirl oh ok, but if you ever spot it on a garden center, i deeply recomend buying it, it has a reason to be singapore's national plant.
Can I hang in full sun?
Hi, depends, if the sun heats up the leaves then not really as they will burn, better let it receive morning sun and shelter it from noon and afternoon sun. Depends on your climate as well and season, but the idea is to not let the leaves get hot.
in my country i grow it in soil and then there is a wood that support them they are doing well...yes you can plant it in soil make sure the soil wont be soaking lots of water all the time ..yes its hot in philippines..this is why u plant them near the tree to break the heat during the day and gave them shade a bit...
Pls remove it from the soil have mercy on the plant
they need air the roots in the soil are most probably rotting if the one you're taking care of is not the Vanda Miss Joaquim then that Vanda ain't suited for soil, so please take it out of the soil and attach it on a tree or a piece of wood :)
What is the name of the plant featured at 0:27?
Jen S its called Rhynchorides bangkok sunset i have one of those its a hybrid of a Rynchostiles and an aerides orchid
Hi, Danny! Today i found out that my vanda has new growth. I have never seen something like that in so calles store-hybrids. What do you think i should do? Right now its pretty small but when it grows can it be in same basket or should i remove it? Removing isnt that good idea i think, but it seems already now, that this basket is quite tight for both of them. It isn't like those ordinary big baskets (7x7cm), it some kind slim basket (about 2x6cm). Heres a picture from my blog 1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ny6ufQvxoGU/VjHzQSo_faI/AAAAAAAACS8/DYvX_456N-U/s1600/20151029_115449.jpg

Hi, sorry I can only use google translate and usually it doesn't work well :(
hellow dear im from the ph i dont know what i gonna to do to my vanda....my vanda is dying!! what i gonna to do plss answer!!
Hi danni! I'm so excited, I got my 1st vanda! I think it is a pink pachara. I'm also worried about it though, because it has some black spots. I thought they were rot, but they haven't changed in the last week. I wondered if you could look at some pics and let me know what you think. I'm including a link to an album with 3 pics: one of when I bought it in the vase it came in, one of it hanging in its new home, and the last is a collage of 3 shots of the worst of the black spots over the course of a week.
Hi, I cannot see the pictures, copy the link address not the html code and I think it should work :)
+MissOrchidGirl sorry about that! Let's try again.
s1159.photobucket.com/user/jshinman87/library/Mobile%20Uploads/vanda
ok this might have been some rot but if it doesn't extend it means the infection was stopped by the orchid. The tissue should dryout on its own. So just observe it and see if it spreads, if not we're good :)
beautiful orchids but I don't have like you're sadly
