Please do something on finance such as mortgages, loans and bank accounts. The 21% interest rate must be impacting everyday life. Appreciate Moscow is richest demographic and life goes on as normal but outside what’s it like ?
We have had very profitable mortgages for almost a decade, sponsored by the state. I literally live in a small town on the outskirts of Russia. Do you know how the interest rate affects me? My money is in a bank account at 20%. The standard of living has not changed much. Prices have gone up, but my salary has also been raised.
Hello Russell and thank you for your video. what a lot of people don’t realize is that shopping malls should really look no different because they are not sanctioned. Consumer goods are not sanctioned. Food items are not sanctioned. So one would expect the stores to still be full.
They may not be sanctionned, but foreign suppliers still want their money to be dollars or euros. The result is that many prices are similar to what you would find in Berlin, but remember that people in Berlin earn much more than the average moscovite.
Well, if anyone were, they were advised to bring dollars and euros only since no one accepted anything less, least of all rubles... in Russia. Get it? So much for your new world reserve currency😅

Thank you for the calm slow walk-through and factual opinion-free commentary! It would be interesting to see how turnover, sales volumes and stock turns have been developing over, say, the past five years... But that probably all is commercially confidential data per each business and impossible to obtain. The stores that are open all look very flash and fully stocked. But one reason for fully stocked shelves can obviously be that there is little demand. If that is the case it is not going to improve much in light of the rouble continuing its decline against all other major currencies, and seeing that so many goods are imported... In principle, this should create new opportunities for domestic businesses, but they are facing two challenges: a significant labour shortage, and very high interest rates. Where is this going to lead?

Also as of the most recent data: In the UK, the average annual salary is around £33,000-£35,000. In Russia, the average annual salary is around £8,000-£10,000 So British wages are generally around 3-4 times higher than Russian wages on average. Let's see that in another perspective, by purchasing power when a Russian person buys 1 pack of cherry tomatoes I can buy about 6 packs. That's 6 to 1, hello! Thank you so much for your insightful report. I worked in Moscow from 2015 to 2020 when Covid arrived. Although I am in touch with my friends in Russia, we are very careful about what we talk about and so many of my curiosities have been answered by this video Rather than having to ask them. Certainly the mall looks very similar to how it looked when I would go there. I imagine a IKEA substitute will come along pretty shortly. Interesting to see how the international brands have been re-incorporated into secondary stores. Did you have any insight on how they manage to acquire these products. I do know from my friends that there is much concern and suspicion about the legitimacy of the products from Levi jeans to Apple computers. Even when I was there, they would pay me to bring products from the US that were available in Russia for a similar price, only because they knew they would be authentic.
Parking there must be a nightmare. Where do you park? Even though Mega looks deserted the businesses within are definitely booming. That’s because millions of people are shopping there every week. They just don’t go shopping during on Tuesday afternoons. You see, things have never been better. We know this because Putin and his lackies are telling us so. They are saying that ever since Russia has been sanctioned by the west, its economy has never been stronger, of course.
The interest rate in Russia is currently 21% and rising, and inflation probably higher. I live in a country nearby Russia... Rate 3,3% with prognosis of reaching 2% within 2025. Government just present gigantic plan for infrastructure to stimulate the economy, create jobs and make life more comfortable for our inhabitants. Russia spends 40% of the budget on warfare which Russia pays for with high inflation-money - which creates nothing - just misary and future costs. ...and Russell continuously shows half filled average shopping centres... Somehow it makes the audiance happy to see western brands in tye shelves - as a "victory"? (Think of the insane cost to get them?) When peace is negotiated, do you really think that there are any western companies interested to invest in Russia with the insane risk of loosing it all when the president goes bananas even more? We get along with our lives just fine without Russia. The small cooperation we had in the energy sector is sadly degraded and will stay in the margin for many decades to come... ...but keep on feeling proud for your shopping centres for now.
Very nice as always Russel

In Russia a pack of 250g cherry tomatoes costs £1.42 but in the UK they're only £0.83 for the same thing.
Also as of the most recent data:
In the UK, the average annual salary is around £33,000-£35,000.
In Russia, the average annual salary is around £8,000-£10,000
So British wages are generally around 3-4 times higher than Russian wages on average.

If that Mall was in a free market it would have closed down two years ago, along with the rest of them. Good luck with your current inflation.
In Russia you don't need a parking, because you got no car.
That mall is big and going broke.
