    A fairly cheap set of crow's foot wrenches that will fit on a ratchet or breaker bar does make a number of jobs on older Volvos considerably easier, as I discovered when I had to change the temperature gauge sender on my old 244. Interestingly, that one was still working correctly, even though it was leaking coolant through the middle of it due to the plastic insulating material having broken down...

    Huge fan of the headlight wiper, so nice that the motors still work unlike my '98 W140 that I spent ages and money on before Xmas getting mine working properly.
    Tricks for old cans of paint: Warm them up in hot water for a minute or so to increase the aerosol pressure and soak the nozzle in celly thinners for same time. So many people don't clear the nozzle after use, combine that with age related pressure drop and you get the classic dribble symptoms you had here.
    BTW. Get that wing sticker off, it's just wrong!!!

    Here's some advice from someone who has been driving Volvo's for over 40 years and this particular model for over 20 years. The best thing to use to touch-up the wiper arms is a black felt marker. It's much quicker and better than paint. I have been using a felt marker for many years and it does the job and is pretty much a perfect match to the existing finish on the arms.

    I liked the headlamp vipers, in bad weather and particulary wet snow you could allways get better lighting, without risking a cracked headlight as these glass ones can get a little hot when using 100/55w H4 lightbulbs! (Not original) These days highpressure "cleaners" along with plastic lense and antifreeze wiper fluid is killing the lenses. The 740 headlamp vipers will cope with getting stuck in the winter and just keep on viping when they taw loose. Many owners up here cut away the axles as soon as EU regulations didn't make them mandatory any more, which I think was a pity. Yes, the blades cost about the same as those for the windshield, but their claim that these didn't work is rubbish. Unfortunatly I saw seconds before you cracked the bladeholder/washer nozzle that it was going to end up that way, been there done that got the t-shirt! I would buy one of you but I doubt you got any 9XL! ;)

    • @Bratfalken
      @Bratfalken 4 года назад

      And if in freezing conditions, allways loosen the window vipers, the linkage, which you can get to under the air intake just loosing a couple of bolts under the hood, are a tad flimsy, my father came home with one viper stationary and the other viping the hood one cold day. The linkage is just thin metal bent into an V shape and has plastic holes at the ends, one of his had jumped off and the other was bent. I could straighten it and put both back on, but it is not funny in bad weather! At least the linkage isn't underneath the dashboard like in the 240 and older models!

    Do you also know why Volvo had wipers on the headlights? that is because you have quite a few tunnels in Scandinavia that are not perfectly finished, just say that they are still in rough condition and since there is a lot of moisture in those tunnels and dirt, of course, you suddenly saw nothing through your windshield and at the same time your headlights because these tunnels do not have light, which is why you also have some kind of washing facilities after almost every tunnel where you can wash or clean your windows, etc. of your car.

    Every time I listen to that intro (and outro) I now think of your 145. Oh yes, headlamp wipers! 😍 Is that a stone chip in the nearside headlight? If you've got any stone chips on the windscreen you could get them to fill that in at the same time, although when I left National Windscreens to do that (just the windscreen, while the car was in the work's car park and I was away) on the Golf I ended up having to go to their office in Dartford after I accused them of taking the £25 and not doing anything. Got there (after complaining to their head office) and after much scrutiny they concluded that "the compound must've fallen out"...

Can you take the headlight apart and just buy the glass (I had that happen on a brand new lorry at work - all week it'd been into the garage for one problem or another - small stuff, bolts not tightened up, safety valves not working properly, had an electrical problem which had it off the road for two days and eventually I had to take it back to Nuneaton to have the wiring repaired and on the Friday you guessed it, everything working fine on the way to a site, get there, walked around the vehicle and smashed headlight - the garage took it apart and just replaced the glass - they couldn't believe it. I'd had my old lorry for years, no problems at all, get in a new lorry all of those problems, and then a smashed headlight. That never happens!!) or would you need an entire new headlight? I would also imagine (looks like the chip is at the top) so is it normal glass, or does it have the lines on it to help the beam pattern? I'd say definitely worth a shot, if not for the content alone. We've all got plenty of time on our hands at the moment!! Did just Google "DIY cracked headlight glass" and almost all products were for plastic lenses, but if you Google "DIY windscreen repair kit" there's loads for glass. If not add it to the list of parts, along with OEM headlight protectors ;) Got some of those for the Golf too, but they cost more than I can get a used headlight from a breakers. I got the last NOS set from Volkswagen UK, presumably that have been sat on a shelf for fifteen years, and now in my cupboard gathering dust...

    The wipers on the headlights (should) only operate if the main headlights are switched on and the wipers are on, so you can still drive it in daylight in the rain without chewing up your paint. The fact that they come on just with the windscreen wipers might mean you have a seized relay in the electrical system that is allowing them to operate all the time, rather than just when the headlights are on...
    The wiper motor assemblies on Volvos and SAABs are generally much more robust and well sealed than those on other cars so it's pretty unusual for them not to be working, even on vehicles in advanced stated of decrepitude or age. ive had to do the temperature sensor on my car. I thought it was difficult to get to and buried but the Volvo is definitely worse luckily the connector was significantly smaller and I couldn't get a spanner on due to pipes and things but could get a long 19mm socket over it with an extension no problem. the connector on mine was a lot slimmer so a long socket worked.

    A bit of a bummer with the temperature sender and the headlight wiper arm but the car is over 30 years old. Nice Hub Nut reference there. none of my cars have the dreaded ToD.

    Those Denso wipers are standard on many Japanese cars (Denso is a Japanese company btw lol) and they are meant to be an ‘aero’ style like the newer generation wipers on newer cars

    Prancing Moose stickers! 😀 I have them on my red C30 😎🚗 Did you get them from Dave Barton? Mines have ‘Volvo’ and the swedish flag on them, but apparently Volvo in the USA stopped him from putting the name on (spoilsports!).

    I'm surprised you didn't just break off the plastic part of the sensor and use a socket or ring. Snug the new one up with an open ender. BSP thread I think so not too tight. It might come out easier with the engine hot?

    Tips for getting nuts in hard to reach places... 😏 You may have it already but if not, let me introduce, one of my favorite tools, always in my car; the Knipex pliers wrench in 150 or 180mm size. Called "tångnyckel" in Sweden 🤓

    Minor repairs of older vehicles can be pretty hit or miss, as nuts and bolts rust and seize and plastic becomes brittle, so I suppose a 50% success rate is about par for the course on the first attempt.
