Un fact: Kanami wrote "Without Holding Back" to help Miku learn to play "Different" at speed
Misa and Akane are a killer beat duo. Always finding a way to sneak in some tasty beats in each song. This band somehow fits an impressive amount of things in songs that are under 5mins.
It’s incredible what they can do in a short period of time.
They're such good musicians, and they are so lucky to have Kanami writing their songs. She's a damn genius, and I don't care what anyone else says about it.
She is Dan no worries. To weave all of that together and have it come out the other side sounding like this is an epic job.
Can't let this pass. Kanami writes the base music, sending it to MISA and Akane for bass and drums. Then goes to Miku for the lyrics, now with Saiki working with Miku more these days. If you look at the credits on a CD, Music Band Maud, Lyrics Miku.
The one who sometimes requests changes in the music is Miku!!!
This is a killer track live, as I suspected it would be after seeing the MV.
Yep, heard it twice live.
so much better live! ♥
Eh, with Band-Maid, there is no better...only variations on perfection
Indeed it is!
Bob, The more I hear Band Maid's music that defies any genre categorization, agree with someone who called their sound as "Band Maid Music". I used to call them pan-rock genre. I agree that "Band Maid Music" is the best way to describe what they do.
Thanks Bill! I think you are so right.
Y que me dices de los mil matices en la voz de Saiki en esta canción.
BAND-MAID verdaderamente son otra historia. Su música nos viene de una dimensión desconocida.
I was even more impressed after watching the making of of the music video. It was ridiculously hot the day they shot this, but these ladies are super professionals and stuck with it.
That would make it so much harder but you wouldn’t have know watching them.
Watch DICE/HATE (two songs) from Lalapalooza 2023 if you want to watch a crazy throwdown between Misa and Kanami during HATE. It's great.
Thanks I’ll check it out.
Here we understand what a great drummer Akane is. Not just the sheer skill but she gently but firmly pushes the rhythm on and off the click pace taking the others with her.
Thanks Steve!
THANK YOU for noticing Akane's 32nd note rolls/fills.....she's a Beast! You're the first reactor I've watched that points this out, and this song has been out for a while now.
Thanks Jim I appreciate it!
I took their advice and "watched and liked"! I think all we Maidiacs watching smiled when you heard MISA's bass solo and played it again and enthused about it so much - and we smiled because we knew you were about to smile broadly yourself when you got 'served the second helping', to use Band-Maid's maid-cafe idiom. Thanks for the explanation about Kanami's skills here, so fast! The MV was filmed in an abandoned quarry in Ibaraki prefecture and when Miku was asked why they chose it as a location she answered "It was the most convenient place to dump the bodies, po!" Great reaction as ever to THE best band on Earth. Now, whenever anyone asks what genres of music I love, I'm going to start with "Band-Maid Music...Rock...Metal..."!
Hey thanks so much Tony! That’s funny about thr bodies. Yeah that solo really blew me away. So so good. They ladies are incredible.
SO much talent in one place! ♥ these girls!
They are super talented.
It's been Hunky Dory Days for USA, Mexico and Japan fans, that's for sure! As their 2023 10th Anniversary Concert series closes after they performed a whooping 70 of their over 120 superhit songs, we’re now all waiting for the big climax at the 17,000 seat Yokohama stadium in Nov 26! A live Band-Maid experience is not to be missed, if at all possible! Thx, Bob!
Thanks Tom! Someone else just told me about that concert. I’ll have to see what I have going on over the break.
@@bobcieslinski You mean you might be attending their Yokohama concert? If so, you'd have a lot of fans anxiously awaiting your coverage!
@@TomClark-Futourawish I could have but I had too many family things going on. Family comes first.
That location was killer. Not sure I'd be all that comfortable these days that close to the edge, lol. Plus the rock color was cool, and I'm suspecting it was once a quarry. Akane is always awesome, and although Miku does a nice job on rhythm, it's really Kanami that keeps the guitar sound throughout the song. For me personally, I think Band Maid, Unlucky Morpheus, Nemophila and Lovebites are all at the top of their individual genres. What is also so great about these groups is, when seeing their personality videos, they are so humble, down to earth, a little shy, and no tight leather, spikes, black eye shadows, etc. one finds on US and European bands. Then add in they are all tremendous musicians. And these are only the top bands, there are so many more Japanese bands that greatly contribute to the music scene. Nice review Bob!
Hey Guy! I really loved that location too and I suspect it was a quarry. I’m really enjoying these bands for sure and I love the fact they are so humble go such amazing musicians. I suspect that’s a cultural thing. Thanks and take er easy!
@@bobcieslinskiHmmm, a bit, but there are some Japanese bands with the traditional "rockstar" mentality (cough MtH cough). The Ladies tho (Band-Maid, Nemophila, Baby Metal, Hanabie, etc) seem to have a more easy-going nature and it shines through in their music, videos, concerts and other "content."
The abandoned quarry of Ishikiri Sanmyaku. It seems almost a surreal place.
@@JuanSan66 thanks!!
I'm not sure how they were able to get Kanami up on that cliff!!! She's terrified of heights!!!
I would be too. That was really high up.
To truly enjoy this band you need to also listen to their softer side. 'Memorable', written during US tour, 'About Us' during Covid, or my favorite 'Daydreaming'. Their acoustic songs shine too. Then there is the April fools release by Kobato showing us her pop star status. 'Cluppo Peace & Love.'
Thanks!
At the drop of a hat
I knew you’d like and appreciate the incredible musicality in display in this remarkable song. The Maids should be playing stadiums 🏟️ all over the world. They do play the Yokohama Arena in about 10 days so that’s one mountain they’re climbing. They’re growing in awareness, appreciation and love everyday on their way to World Domination!! 🔥🤘🏼🎸🥁🎤🎼😎✌🏼🍾
Thanks Bob!
I have recently (past 5 days) visited the quarry where this MV was shot. As it's now part of BAND-MAID history. I know just a few others have as well....But there can't be to many of us fans who have. I have also visited the location used for MV "Real Existence"..(my no.2 B-M song) and all the locations used for Miku's "anime run" (what i affectionately call it) in the MV "Don't Let Me Down".
They can do slow. There's even an acoustic version of 'Puzzle'. But if you haven't done 'About Us' you should. It's a ballad. A Love Song really to the fans during the lockdown. Heartbreaking! Also check out their April Fool's Day persona, BAND-MAIKO. They throw in Japanese Traditional with that.
Thanks!
Nice reaction Bob TY
Now is your chance to get to know them much better.
Their end of the10th anniversary tour from Yokohama can be live streamed. 3 1/2 hour show 26 November.
Tickets on their HP
They can do much more than play great music, you get to experience their amazing Omajinai show with the audience.
So now is your best chance.
Thanks I’ll have to check the schedule to see what’s going on over Thanksgiving break.
@@bobcieslinski You can get 2 different stream tickets. One is where you can watch and replay for I think 6 days. The other is until the end of the year, so you can watch it as many times as you want. That is the option I'm going for.
Excellent job sir. This has been a deep dive into this song. There are certain details that I can see differently now. Thanks for this interesting analysis.
Thank you so much Juan! I appreciate the kind words! I hope you will come back for more.
Great reaction and analysis. I really appreciate the subtle details you point out that my untrained ears can't quite discern and dissect. Thanks again.
The hanks so much Elliot! It means a lot. I’m glad to have you on the channel.
What genre of music do they play? Rock'n'Roll? hard rock? hip-hop (Saiki)? funk (Misa)? or classical music (Kanami)? Yeah, pretty much all of them.
Yep
Hi Bob. You had me chuckling when you kept stopping at the end of the first part of Misa’s solo not realizing there was a second part. 😅 I was thinking…..just wait! 😊
Listening to Band-Maid is like watching a Stanley Kubrick movie. You can pay attention to the main characters, the singer, bass and drums in Band-Maid, but you can equally watch, or listen, to what’s behind all that and it can be a complete experience on its own. I hope that makes sense.
This video was shot in an old granite pit and it is an amazing location.
Thanks Robin! Yep just completely mind blowing stuff.
The thing about Band-Maid is that they have 3 of the absolute best musicians on the planet with Kanami, MISA and Akane. Then you have Saiki who can sing just about anything and anyway the song needs. All backed up by Miku who is a duo with Kanami AND Saiki...amazing band...especially live.
I keep hearing they are great live. I can’t wait to see them live for myself.
I've never really cared for this song as a whole but broken into individual instruments, it is just KILLER. That first gallop always felt weird and tainted the song for me but outside of that Saiki slays with the rap and the vocal slides in the chorus and that held note on the outro chorus is fantastic. Its very progy and funky at the same time. MISA goes ham in the middle and Akane and Mincho are off the chain the entire song. Miku does exactly what she needs to do and does it perfectly. The parts surpass the sum here. That last bit from Akane at the very end is like a hummingbird doing a drive by of your head.
I love this song as a whole. It's one of the most interesting compositions on the album for me. It's so different and I love it. It's the individual parts and how masterfully they are woven together, dancing in and out of each other. Those incredibly distinct bits woven together perfectly making the whole incredible.
I like your descriptions. Thanks!
36.37576 / 140.20353 are the GPS coordinates for the beautiful location; an abandoned mine in Japan
Thank you Bob, for stopping and pointing out some of the things Akane does. I’m a guitarist/bassist/vocalist, which means that I don’t know which end of a drumstick is which. I’m learning a lot about drums, and how they can be used inside a composition.
This was another example of a Band Maid song that I didn’t like at first. Only because my ears have been flooded with hard rock and blues. But after a while, and after hearing it live, up close? It’s a lot of fun. And a perfect recommendation for someone who thinks they’ve figured out the Maids.
Have a hunky dory day, Bob!
Thanks Mike! That’s awesome that you play all of those instruments and sing too. You sound extremely talented. I did have a hunky dory day thanks!😂
@@franciscojavierfernandezmo1974
¡Exactamente! Con canciones como esta, luego “From Now On”, “Blooming”, “About Us”, seguida de “Rinne?”
Excellent comments... thank you. They never ever take the easy way out.
Thanks and no they don’t.
This song is full of my next "favorite part".
Nice mine too
Bob your analysis is always in depth. Akane's drumming is excellent, especially the 2:48 section, which is very polyrhythmic with maybe the triplets in grouping of 4. And before the last chorus you can hear the sextuplets she often uses, I think it is quite difficult to play sextuplets at 150 bpm.
Hey Kenji! You definitely know your percussion groupings. Thanks!
Not only do they decide to fit a few thousand notes in....but manage to have it all sound good and make sense rhymically. I thought when they did the April Fools for Band-Maiko that we got a slower song...but it's still pretty quick on the tempo...If you get a chance for a bit of a different side to Band-Maid Bob, check out BAND-MAIKO / 祇園町 "Gion-cho" or "Secret Maiko Lips" done in Geisha traditional style.
Thanks I’ll check it out. Yep it does all work for them no matter how many notes.
Great reaction to a kick-ass video, Bob. Miku has become the master of the pick scrape.😄Kudos to their production crew for always finding these awesome locations for filming!
It was an awesome location and the pick thing is pretty cool.
👍👍👍👍👍
These ladies play some exquisite ballads and mid-tempo rockcore songs.
Amazing reaction. Thx. 👌🤙
Thanks I appreciate it
Great reaction! You have quite the ear for detail.
Thanks I appreciate the kind words.
Always a pleasure listening to your reactions man.
Thanks o much I appreciate it!
Do you want to know what's crazy? I think in almost all of their MVs, you will see the three girls with all their guitars wired up even in the middle of nowhere settings. They are so detailed oriented and true to their craft. They don't show them just doing air guitar. They want to convey that they are playing even though we know they are not "playing" in the videos. Only time I can see MISA NOT wired up in this MV is when she on that high cliff part. Only reason I can think of here is because I read in an interview that it was a bit dicey location up on a high cliff. So, they may have forgot about the wire. But almost in all of the shots, you will notice all of their guitars have wires hooked up. Crazy. I dare you to go to their other music videos and check their guitars. Yep. They are wired up.
That’s awesome info. I didn’t think of it because of the wire being connected. I just assumed. I can’t blame them for not using it in the cliff. Just something to trip on. It would be dangerous. Thanks for the awesome info!
Welcome to the rabbit hole. One of my favorites to get you started. Nice reaction and noticing these ladies are total musicians. Some of the more less known tracks that I love and are on their YT page in just audio are SHAKE THAT, Chemical Reaction and Screaming. Makes this old head banger have faith in music again.
DUDE....FREEDOM!!!! This live cut will BLOW YOUR MIND!!!
Thanks I’ll add those to the list. I love this band.
Some other recommendations. Korea: Luli Lee "Flame", Leenalchi (cross between the B-53s and Bjork) "Hello Gucci". Japanese: Polkadot Stingray "Fiction" and "Telecaster Stripe". Stereo Pony, disbanded, but fun.
Thanks!
Always remember Miku is the lyricist, a brilliant ONE!!
A side note, MISA in an interview stated that she created her bass lines on the piano first.
That was a great and thoughtful review, thanks Bob!
Thanks Davey!
Our little genius Kanami does it again! Wow what a song. Good reaction Bob.
Thanks MrEd! Nice to hear from you again.
Check out Dawn Winery Theme, it is their take on Greensleeves!
Not a complicated song but they still deliver.
Great for Christmas too!
Thanks I will check it out. Sounds interesting.
Thank you for this review, Bob! Enjoyed it!
Thanks so much I appreciate the kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
They seem to be having a real good time when you see them live. Live is a must see
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!
Welcome back Bob.. Thanks for the reaction, it's another great song by Band-maid.. Best wishes
Thanks Grant! Man this one was a killer song. The solos were mind blowing. Hope you are doing well!
These ladies were not exaggerating with a line from their song 'Manners' -> _"Our rock never dies ever. Forever!"_ 🤘🏻The only problem is that most of today's listeners are no longer used to this and don't appreciate it. Instead, songs that are characterless and repetitive as hell get millions of views and likes. Something's not right. 😵💫

Band Maid doing Band Maid things. Incredibly talented ladies.
They sure are Ron.
I always wish Kanami colab with Miyako.😊
Well, I don't care !----I stick to my assertion that the short of Miku as Little Red Riding Hood is THE BEST of all !! ok, maybe not sooo technical,but............................
Hello.....I am a pretty good drummer and let me tell you....getting behind a kit and try and play along with Akani....Makes you feel extremely humble,,,,,to the point,,,,you just realize just how accomplished she really is and just give up !!!! LoL
I bet Tom. She’s something.
There's a fan-made video of the location this was shot at. The video is in Japanese but has high-quality subtitles. I'll link it, but I'm not requesting a reaction to it. It's just an FYI thing. A few months after this, the great Japanese prog/power metal band Galneryus released a video from the same location.
This is one of those songs where I can't pick out a favorite part or a favorite member. Like always, they all have great individual parts that come together to form a fantastic song. It amazes me how much they can pack into one song.
It's funny that you mentioned Japanese bands needing more exposure and used the word "mindset." "Mindset" is the name of the most-viewed song by the great Japanese band Gacharic Spin. Gacharic Spin is right up there with BAND-MAID in terms of musicality and not knowing what to expect from song to song.

Akane scores her part first, then learn how to play it! She said in an intervew that she sees the score for her eyes when she plays…
Wow that’s not easy to do.
Misa tucks the pick into her fore finger. The transition is super fast. I've tried to watch her flip the pick back out and she's just to quick.
Nemophila next!
about "Hunky dory", this phrase is very close to Japanese expression "Honki (本気) Dori (or Tori 撮り)" that means 「本気」= serious, earnest, sincere" and 「撮り」= filming, recording, image capturing".
Thanks!
Get ready to be punished by the Barefoot Assassin and the Gorilla! 🦶🦶🥷🎸 🦍🥁🍌🍌🍌
Why is it that just when I think I’ve seen it all they show me something new and mind blowing.
@@bobcieslinski Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things, Po!
Also, there is something unique, I think, with Band-Maid. Kanami and MISA send their ideas to Saiki in the songwriting process to get her "approval." They genuinely find happiness and inspiration from her decidedly blunt opinions. If it isn't up to her lofty standards, they go back and make it better. This really lends itself to increasing their creativity it seems. Akane, however, doesn't seem to need the input, and the Pigeon has 810 years under her belt.
Not so much for me, like melody 🎶
Not one of my favorite songs, but one of my favorite Akane songs, especially the outro. Thanks for the reaction!
Thanks yep I loved that outro too.
I like when reactors go back and point out memorable moments. Learn a lot.
Thanks I try to get as many as I can.
check out Gion-cho
Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。 This MV was filmed at a famous and old stone quarry (Ishikiri-Sanmyaku) located in Ibaraki prefecture, north of Tokyo. Kanami was very scared when she stood near the edge of the cliff but she could defy the fear once cameras started to capture her playing scene. [source : Gekirock News (2022)]. Saiki is singing "Hunky Dory" repeatedly. It sounds to me, an aged Japanese, a kind of word play or pun. This phrase is very close to Japanese expression "Honki (本気) Dori (or Tori 撮り)" that means 「本気」= serious, earnest, sincere" and 「撮り」= filming, recording, image capturing". This is cynically suitable 😄 to what influencers do, isn't it? In the rap part Saiki is also singing "Always that one-upping contest, chit-chat chit-chat". "Chit-chat" sounds like "chicchai ちっちゃい" in Japanese. That means "tiny, trivial, frivolous, worthless etc." Miku's lyrics includes a lot of word play and Miku admitted she did it on purpose in an interview [source : Spice Oct.7 (2022)] "Influencer" was played on Sep.7 last year at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo as the 13th song and that was the premiere (live debut). Just so you know, I witnessed it at the venue ヽ(^o^)丿.
Thanks and that’s pretty cool info!
