    The stages of discovering Band-Maid:
    1. "Hey, Japanese chicks rocking out! That's so cool!"
    2. "You know, they are _really_ good! They rock!
    3. "Forget about being girls, they are a superb rock band!
    4. "Forget being Japanese, they are speaking a universal language."
... after listening to "about Us" ...
    n. "Forget about being a rock band. These women are artists."

      My discovery:
      1. * _Hearing Choose Me_ * This song is amazing!
      2. * _Hearing 15 seconds of Thrill_ * This is the best band this decade.
      3. * _Seeing them for the first time_ * This has to be fake. Japanese girls can't be this musically gifted, write music perfectly designed for me AND wear maid outfits. Am I crazy? This is a joke.
      4. * _Seeing Domination live for the dozenth time_ * Well, in order to fake it this well, it would just be easier to actually play it so...
      5. They're the best band this century.
6.* _Saiki in About Us * "Cries!"_ Me: 😭😭😭

"Am I witnessing the developement of the greatest rock band of all time?"

One thing that can be clearly stated about BAND-MAID's music is that it is a world that has nothing to do with the words 'boring' or 'familiar'.
The more than 130 songs are so diverse that they cannot be compared, and they take all elements from all kinds of music and create them in their own unique way.
The songs are not only hot and fast, but also generous and relaxed, sad and quiet, all of which are of a high standard.
The symphonic sound of many sounds intricately intertwined, the hot, intense, fast and intense sounds, the quiet, beautiful and slow melodies, the melancholy... I can assure you that there is nothing this band can't do.
They can do anything. Anything is great. You can't even imagine what you're going to get. These are the things I have always felt since I started listening to their music.
These girls give their all, as if their lives depended on it, for a once-in-a-lifetime live performance. They don't hesitate to perform special editions for just one live performance on just one night.
Even familiar songs continue to improve and evolve. Yes, no two songs are ever the same.
The best songs are always among the latest live performances.
And the songs we like best are the ones we are listening to now. It's not uncommon to be surprised to discover a great melody or phrase from a song you've grown accustomed to that you didn't even realise was there.
Believe it or not, this is true.

"About Us" and "Onset" together might be considered the extremes of Band-Maid's creative spectrum, which is as broad as any band's that I can recall. (I watched the Beatles live on the Ed Sullivan Show, so I can recall a ton of bands.) Both pieces are powerful, beautifully crafted compositions that elicit a deep response from listeners.
"Onset" was the Band-Maid song that made me realize that I wasn't just seeing one more great band, but that I might be witnessing the emergence of a "Landmark Band", possibly another Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin,... As an instrumental, "Onset" has everything you could want: it's thematic, it's powerful, it's exciting, and each part is exquisitly performed. You can easily imagine it as a TV or movie theme song or the background for an action sequence. And you'll never unhear it, it's that memorable, it is face-melting, and it burns an indelible mark into your brain.
"About Us" does so too, but instead of melting your face, it reaches into your soul, pulls out your heart, and melts it. One of the conundrums of "About Us" is how Band-Maid repurposed this song. They wrote "About Us" as a sincere thank you to their fans for their support during the lockdown, the first lockdown. They wrote it with the expectation of presenting it to a live audience at Nippon Budokan. After a year of lockdown, they were astonished to be scheduled to play a solo at Budokan, which in their early days was a pipe dream, a motivational stretch goal, like "World Domination" almost a joke. "About Us" was supposed to be a celebration of how Band-Maid and their fans supported each other and helped each other through the darkness of the lockdown, hence the album cover image of bright light shining through a doorway at the end of a dark tunnel, But then the lockdown was extended, Budokan cancelled, the new tour cancelled, and once again Band-Maid's plans were on hold. But having done several online concerts already, they rescheduled the concert and streamed it online without a live audience. I have the bluray of this concert. They try their best to simulate the energy of their usual live shows, like they did at prior online streams, but this concert has a different energy, a "We must fight this and win!" energy. Introducing the song, Saiki explained this at length, in one of the most solemn MC's you'll ever see at a Band-Maid Okyu-ji and when they performed "About Us" you see and hear the emotions, the conflict, and the hope. This is one of Band-Maid's best and brightest moments. No live audience, just stage crew, and still one of the best performances I've ever seen. I do not believe they have ever performed "About Us" live since that day, it isn't on any album, and they did not include it on either of their recently released "Best of" compilations. I cry every time I hear it, sometimes just thinking about it.
BTW: I've seen them live twice. Band-Maid lives up to the hype: they deliver.

I am posting a file for you. About what I refer to as the "Smile Trilogy" I think you will realize why I make and keep such files.
"This is part of what I call the "Smile" trilogy. The first song being Smile, the "B-side" to their song Bubble. The music was written by Kentaro Akutsu who wrote their breakout song "Thrill" but with lyrics by Miku. The second song is "About US" a love song to their fans during the lockdowns written by the Ladies themselves. When it was performed live for the first time during their on-line concert to replace their canceled Budokan concert, Saiki gave a brief speech before the song started, that had many of us getting attacked by dust. Then the song itself brought out the onion ninjas and made many us have allergy attacks as well.
Then we have "Memorable". It was almost 3 years since the Ladies had last toured the US, and they were concerned they had lost their momentum. Even though being told they were selling out their shows, they didn't believe what they were being told, they thought their management was lying to them or playing a joke on them. They came over and performed at Aftershock, then they got on their tour bus, (A first for them, as they normally would either fly or rent a couple vans to tour in) and drove to their first show of their 2022 US Tour. Seattle.
It was at Seattle, that the Ladies got confirmation of just how much their fans love them and how much we missed them. As they walked out on stage, according to several people who were at the show, they were shocked. And Saiki as she came out, was said to have looked like someone had hit her with a bat, her eyes were so wide. The crowd response, and the emotions coming off them fed the Ladies energy as the performed their show. And as they went to their next concert, the response there was the same. And the next show, with the fans sending gifts for MISA's birthday, having several hundred custom printed towels handed out to the audience celebrating MISA's birthday. All these things hit the Ladies in their hearts.
And Kanami had an idea for a new song.
This next part is hearsay so I have no way of confirming it, but the sounds at the beginning before the guitar part starts was the sound that Kanami heard while back stage at the Los Angeles show. Hearing music and the audience talking. Supposedly, she actually recorded it on her phone before their introduction music started playing. Again that is hearsay and I have no way to confirm it."
How many other bands would write such songs? Very few of them I'd wager. But the Ladies of Band-Maid are held up by their fans, their "Masters and Princesses", and they will always do everything they can to give back to us, to show us how much our love for them is returned.
Now if you want to hear something VERY special, you will need to go to @realdocloco and watch his video taken from the Ladies 2023 Lollapalooza performance. It is one video of two songs, the songs are "Dice and Hate?" Trust me. The extended bridge, with the Bass and Lead guitar duel leading to the guitar solo is something you NEED to see and hear.
You also need to check out their latest MV, "Shambles". Trust me, you will enjoy it.

That peformance of About Us comes with an address from Saiki to the online audience explaining the Band's feelings about missing meeting fans at live shows and dedicating the song to fans - so it holds a special place in the hearts of fans of that period - I have my vinyl copy and transcript for framing! Obviously now for all fans and you can pick up on the emotion.

K-Ross, the first time I heard this, I had a similar reaction to yours just now. Such a beautiful, heartfelt song. A departure from their usual kickass rock, but still, as with all things Band Maid, so well done. Yes, chills. A couple days later, I saw it again, this time with the English lyrics translation and I cried my eyes out. Literally sobbing. This powerful, emotional song was in fact, a love song to their fans. We miss you, we love you, this sucks, but please don't despair. We are still here, we're not going anywhere and we'll all be back together again someday soon. After a crappy year of Covid, having their big moment with their first Budokan show canceled, how do these amazing women react? They write this beautiful love song. If you get the chance, watch this again, but with the English translation, but be sure to have a box of tissues or a dry handkerchief handy. You're gonna need it. My love for these women, not just musically, but as just wonderful caring human beings, is immeasurable. There is no better band on the planet. Thank you for your always great reactions.

Very much a song for the fans who were so upset that the Band were unable to play at the Budakon due to Covid. The Band themselves were so excited by the announcement of the prestigious concert but when it wasn't to be their first thoughts were to the fans. The on line concerts they did during Covid like this one seemed aimed again purely for the fans. A long speech before the song by Saiki (Blue Rose) was a way of hoping the fans would feel better with the song. Onset is another wonderful instrumental in front of an audience where they literally excel. While many Bands have a great relationship with their supporters and fans. I have never come across the sort of two way loyalty that this band achieves.

    LOL. Queen.

I remember when About us dropped, it came as a single after the album they had released and not part of the album, a covid song for us madiacs. Not long after they had their online live streamed concert, which I saw when that happened and they did this and other songs. A beautiful song, epic. I dont know if you know but Kanami composes all of this music, she is insanely talented and Miku writes the lyrics, if you get a chance to read them, it is a beautiful song. Onset is one of their instrumentals, they have one usually on each album. These are there for showing off but also to give Saiki a vocal break during concerts(along with Miku doing comedy and a song of her own). They tend to do very long concerts, 22+ songs, so the break is needed. This is the best hard rock band.

Onset is killer song. 一撃必殺(ichigeki−hissatsu) means one hit kill.😻

When it comes to the instrumentals....
I'm not sure what came first: the melodies or Saiki need of taking breaks.
At least: after a couple of years the singing put so much strain on her throat.
To the extent that she needed to make a surgery.
At least they have a break midway. Miku is having her "omajinai time" (magic time), and doing some of the instrumentals... or one of the few songs, where Miku has main vocals.
Favourite instrumental? "Without holding back" and song... Hmmm... "Blooming"?

Thanks. I love both of these songs. The mix for the Onset concert was killer. The online show with About Us not so much. The lead guitar disappears in much of it. I bet the recording mix (apart from the house mix) for the in-person shows gets more attention in post. Or maybe that there aren't separate stream and recording mixes for the online shows? Whatever, thanks again.

Nice one K-Ross. You should check out some of the "White Rooms". There are 9 of them.
Without Holding Back or Giovanni is a good place to start.
Maybe some acoustic such as Sayonakidori or Catharsis.

There are more instrumentals! And they’re just as good if not better!
