How To Assemble A Hot Rod Front End - Ford Free-T Ep. 85
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 июн 2019
- Over the past few episodes on the Ford Free-T we have be slowly prepping and painting all the suspension parts for final assembly. We already have the rear end assembled and on the ground, its time to make the chassis a full roller. Matt and George work on assembling the front axle on the fab table to make it a little easier then working on the floor. Matt covers a few tips when building the front end to insure the caster (if built into the axle) is in the correct direction. While there isn't much to the front end, there are always hiccups and roadblocks with final assembly. Now that the whole chassis is together and sitting on all four tires the satin black paint looks killer! We cant wait to drop in the engine and set the body on for the full effect! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to keep up to date on our builds and adventures!!

I thought you were a truthful young man, by now you should know old Ford's never fall together, you have to dig in old boxes and junk piles . This video has inspired me to get out here today and prep this 239 flat head that's been sitting for at least 30 years for cranking, yep she turns, keep'm coming back to life, Freddie from N. Ga.
Haha yea I pretty much expected it to be this way, but still was a little more optimistic than it went lol. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG

Nice video on front axle assembly, coming together slow but sure. Going to be one nice ride. Got me inspired any way. Thanks for taking us along on the assembly.
looking good getting excited to see it done.
Looks amazing!!
Looking forward to the finished piece! Once finished this will be an outstanding sequential build series. Great rides take time and your proving that point nicely. Well done.
That's Eric! We know some of this stuff gets to be dry for casual viewers but I agree it'll be cool to show the process from Day 1 to driving it around! Thanks for following along! -Matt/ITG
Loving all the satin black. Love the wheels!
Looking good Matt 👌 keep up the great work can't wait to see it done, 👍👍🤘
Reminds me of installing the kin pins on my 52. Dad and I split the $100 for a bench-top Sunnen rod hone machine. It came with an adjustable engine boring hone. Didn't know what I would ever use it for. But the $50 turned out to be a great investment. I used it to hone out the the king pins to fit perfectly. Love it when early equipment comes up for sale reasonably priced.
Matt another great video, the color looks great...
Awesome! I always thought that he king in bearing goes on the top. I will check on one of my old videos and see.
Awesome! Looks soooo good Matt. You've gotta feel like a new Daddy! ...Newk from Kentucky
It's getting exciting! -Matt/ITG

Best part of a resto it build is putting it back for you hope the LAST TIME.
cheers

Matt, soon the " Free T " will become the " Sweet T ". Terry from Illinois.
Haha yea it is going to be pretty sweet! -Matt/ITG
I sure enjoy your vidieo's . ole man from the northwest coast.
Thanks so much for watching! -Matt/ITG
Wow I opened the video 4 minutes after you posted and I was the 5th like ! channel is really getting popular with us old gear heads . Great content Matt and Mike
Thanks Gerry, we're glad people dig what we're doing! -Matt/ITG
In the “old days” 1958- we cleaned those brake shoes and drums with carbon tetrachloride before assembly. That stuff is banned now but , it sure eliminated stopping problems and glazing of the shoes!
yep good old carbon tetrachloride alas banned in New Zealand aswell heavy carcinogen apparently
This reminded me of rebuilding my old VW link pin (king pin) front ends.
Really enjoy watching the progress.
I see where some people say they like the music. I like it, but find it kind of distracting while trying to watch what you're doing. Just my opinion, and I'm a newbie to the channel.
Thanks.
Matt thanks for the FYI but the camper in the till for the front axle I’m a carpenter by trade measure twice cut once just had a problem today doing something cut it a taper and got turned around because I got a distraction I said I’m a have to cut the other way then I looked and said no dummy turning around this fit like a glove keep up the good work love the music love the music if you gonna pull ftom that big pile of junk that you should only pull fords BUT ONE COOL COOL COOL RIDE IS THAT international cab over the hot Rod I like that TAKE CARE JUNKMANDO
Always a pleasure Matt! Cheers! Zip~
Love the look of the wide 5 drums and wheels. Hopefully you won't cover them up with wheelcovers!!
I was surprised you had to drive in the king pins. The pins I've put in slid in pretty easily. Also, you had no need for a spring stretcher. Looks great.
Just a little tapping. Sometimes they slide right in but sometimes the fit is so precise it takes some tapping with a mallet. All turns nicely now! -Matt/ITG
I hope that we can see just how it goes together instead of before and after shots
Love the music
Wow...there are always critiques. I think you do a helluva job with your projects! Keep up the great work Matt!
Me too! Boogie and Blues music was the favorite among lots of guys in the late 40's and early 50s. Nothing like listening to WLAC Nashville while coming home from the racetrack at 1am on Fri and Sat nights.
Looking good Matt, fun time now putting all the nicely painted pieces together isn't it? Can't wait to see it all T gether. Maybe Mike can do a video of you cruising down the highway like in the other one he did. Keep up the great pace, you got a Deadline to meet now.. ;o)
Hi Robbie, we will definitely do a final "done" feature of the car where we get all of those fun beauty shots! Gonna be probably late summer as it always takes a while to work all of the bugs out of a fresh build like this. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Thanks for great video! What is the green hardtop for/from?
50 Mercury Roof. It's for sale! Winfield bought it somewhere we were picking last time he was over here visiting and left it here for a rainy day.. aka he wants to sell it haha. -Matt/ITG
I would like to buy the "head hold" when can I place an order
Hi! I have a model a frame and open banjos stile rear end like you have there . Do you have a video on how to install it. Thank you for your help
What year spindles and where did the drums come from?
If this had mechanical brakes and you changed to hydraulic did you buy a kit? And did it come with new hubs?? Great informational videos.
why you removed the shock support? is it enough the leaf spring?
I have front leaf on my t bucket. Is there any way to add shocks to front end?
Nice vidio Matt what year are the pedals (brake and clutch)
What ends do you have on the end of the Split wishbones?
Matt used the older Ford ball and socket style rod ends. Model T thru 1935
I think. Most rodders and racers used the "new" tapered ends after they were available because they were so much simpler to use. Just a hole instead of a ball on the mating part. Hope this helps Eddie
All righty guys, second time with the first comment of the day should be worth some damn stickers or a rusty piece of metal don't ya think? Ha ha. Anyway nice work men.

Apologies for the newb question but do I need a spring spreader to take the front spring off? I have a new reverse eye front spring and new perches to go on and would like to attempt myself but not sure if once the front axle is out that spring is still under pressure?
Spring is still under pressure some but not as much as the rear. Using C clamps to relieve the pressure slowly is how we do it.
@@IronTrapGarage Thankyou for replying, I will give it a try 👍
Was this a way to get the gasser look? I’m building a period correct (50’s-60’s) gasser 40 ford coupe that will be raced
Where can I find/get wheels in 17 x 5 or 17x4.5 or even in 17x 4 for my 700- 17 white wall tires.
I’d check swap meets. 33-34 ford used 17” wheels stock.
you never mention re-bushing/reaming the axle/kingpin's, i assume you did,
That was done before we mocked it all up
Just for fun I went back to ep1 and in it MIKE said that at the end of each episode you were going to tally up the cost and see if the FREE-T was actually free?????? That was October 2017 so it has taken 2yrs to build (not bad @ all ) so I noticed that you don't say how much it is anymore ( which is all ways a good idea so the MISSES won't find out but you can tell us and we all promise not to say anything about it)
I think Emily Post might have written a book that covered it maybe. :) :) :)
How big is ur Garage?
Around 2Ksqft
@@IronTrapGarage how many feet front to back and left to right?
50 Feet Wide X 40 Feet Deep.
Nice shot of the backs of your shirts??? Be nice if you would show whole assembly. It's like watching a magic show on lower shock Assembly forward...not helpful
Not really a "how to" more of a watch us work video.
