Great vid. So you reuse the head bolts? You put grease in the threads; why not just use engine oil?
I'm always told (and am under the impression of from everything I've read about it) that the head gasket failure that is so prevalent in the Gen 3 is pretty rare in the Gen 4. And from what I've learned from you, it can happen secondary to the heat exchanger failure if the engine is allow to overheat from having no coolant-is that the cause of this Gen 4's head gasket failure?
I'm pretty interested in how common it is in the Gen 4 and any reasons for it, but there's not a lot of reading on it because the heat exchanger issue is so much more common that any loss of coolant is immediately attributed to (and the actual cause of) that. I'd love your input on this, Walter.
I wonder if I stressed my gen 3 out from two seasons of lower full grill blocking and also combined with not a more religious routine of EGR, Intake and PCV Valve circuits cleaning like maybe ideally every 50K or less. That second season of summer grill blocking and oddly when running a second bottle of Techron cleaner through my gas tank in a row timed with when the sequence of three reset ed check engine lights came on with misfire codes and a loss in coolant.
It’s the same. The fourth GEN just tend to have less miles but it’s even the same part number.

There is no need to pull the main fuse for the hybrid battery?
@@Markatmjm1974 As long as there is not a code or codes for an isolation fault or related like shorts to ground codes that would energize what is not supposed to be I'm guessing. Probably helps people not lose their saved settings if you are more expert and fast at doing the work, so can safely. Otherwise, pull the 12V clips and the HV interlock if you choose I am thinking.
Awesome video brother. Does the cylinder head need any prep or dismantling before being resurfaced by machine shop?
How many hours of labor , are supposed to take that job ?
Head bolts can be reused?
Everyone claiming 4th gen don’t have headgasket issues were wrong 😂
Great info as usually. Thanks for sharing!
Did you guys turn the cam pulley by the tire counter @14:10 clockwise or clockwise to loosen it? Mine turns when I try to turn it counter-clockwise and can't get it off.
@gasketmasters How many miles were on this 4th gen and What is your best guess as to how often they change the coolant????
@@GABRIEL_CRAFT it had 164,000 miles
@gasketmasters was the coolant ever changed???
@32:10 Torqued mine to 22 and 2 bolts snapped and 1/2 of one of the bolts... is still stuck inside.
Did you reuse the bolt?

Do the 2019 and up model years have the same issues? I thought the head gaskets blowing with the 4th gen was a solved issue but that appears to not be the case (I have a 2022).
And after the head gasket is replaced, is the issue fixed permanently?
Who said it was solved? The internet?
@@nrgonline A lot of that information actually comes from the technicians who work on these cars. If there are any revisions for issues like head, gaskets, prematurely failing, technicians generally discover this first.
I need this service in Boston. Any recommended place? I have a Lexus CT200h with 195k miles.
@@Negocios-d4g yeah. Run 26.2 miles, eat some chouda, and dump some tea. Then follow our video instructional and DIY because we have no recommendations in your area.
Don't even bother with this. There is an easy fix. Just lose the coolant cap. Engineers never talk about it.
how much do you charge for this job in California?
$1950 currently
@@gasketmasters 2K an hour? That's some great money.
@notj5712 thats an insanely great price depending on the location. In Chicago a Head Gasket job on one of these 4th Gens can cost over $3000!!!
