The quick tips series consists of short videos on a guitar or amplifier repair or maintenance topic. In this episode, I show how to adjust pickup height on a Stratocaster-type guitar with single coil pickups. Today's subject is a 1989 Squier Bullet that was made in Korea.

Cool, thanks!
super ! danke !
Very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Hi can you please tell me the height of kinman HMV as no one can at the moment ??? Thanks colin
I don’t know that model exactly (maybe Hank Marvin?) but for higher powered pickups like those I would try 8/64” on the bass side and 6/64” on the treble side as a starting point. Use 1/8” and 3/32” hex wrenches if you do it like I did in the video.
what size hex keys are 4/64 and 5/64 inch.....what are the equivalents in millimetres please?
Roughly 1.6 and 2 mm. There’s probably not an exact metric equivalent in hex wrenches, so you would have to use a 1.5 mm wrench and adjust it for a loose fit.
2MM gap from string bottom to polepiece top is Fender's suggestion...
Always you have to multiply 2,54 by 4 or 5 and so divide by 64, and you´ll have mm measures.
When you raise the pickup I have notice it is much more senitve when tuning with electronic tuner . I guess this has to do with the magnet being so strong has anyone noticed this ?
The closer the pickup to the string, the stronger the signal, so it makes sense. If you mix pickup brands or types and one is louder than the other(s), it helps to move that one away from the strings to balance the output.
I think this is what is called stratitis, but whatever it’s called, yeah you have to watch out for it. Even without a tuner if the pickups are too high I think it’s most notable on the G string. It’s will flatten the note fairly quickly, and also noticeably cut down on how long the not sustains for. If you hear this happening it’s just to incrementally lower the pickup until it goes away. Someone mentioned too, this is why when adjusting pickup height, it’s best to start with the bridge pickup. Set it right, and then adjust the other pickups to be the same volume/loudness. If you first set the neck, and it is “hot” it may be the bridge has to be too high to get the same level and then stratitis can happen .
2MM on bass and treble sides' polepieces when pressing at the highest fret is about what Fender uses ... It's a good starting place.
Thanks for the comment!
If only you had a before and after on the sound.
Good thought, but I do need to learn how to record my amp sounds a bit better. Will be working on that soon.
True, but the manufacturer specification is objectively the best starting point, and then of course adjust from there if the sound is not to your liking. Here are several specifications that may help: fendercustomersupport.microsoftcrmportals.com/en-us/knowledgebase/article/KA-01901
Genau. Lol 😂
Alles gute weiterhin 👍🏻
@@ijahtom I was unaware that there were specs for car seats. :)
@@hacksguitarhobby lol 🤣
Yes you are right, only guidelines.
in the USA , nearly no one even recognizes German let alone reads it...
Hm, I only set Pickup hight by ear and 'comfort', Not by numbers, no matter where ever these numbers come from. Every Pickup set sounds different and numbers are always the same. That can't work for me. Well wishings everytime
Thanks for the comment. It’s definitely a personal preference, but the video is intended for those who need a starting point of factory specifications. Thanks for watching.
@@hacksguitarhobby seen!!
Good starting point for sure. Thank you for reply.
not really an accurate way to do this since pole pieces can be at different heights on different guitars
On a Strat, the E strings are reference points for the other pole heights, so it works out. See pickup section here: support.fender.com/en-us/knowledgebase/article/KA-01901
@@hacksguitarhobby this is what i meant , thanks
