This is my first time watching one of your videos and I love your voice and the way you speak and the things you speak. I could listen to you talk about video games all day. Please do.
Glad i stuck through that initially off putting first bit of the video I ended up liking this enough to now look out for this guy's content in the future good shit
I love this reviewer... awesome voice, awesome japanese knowledge and hilaaariouos humor. This is how reviews should be! probably my one and ONLY likeable guy working in Kotaku
I was on the fence on this game, never been a huge fan of jrpg's outside FF7-9 (and 12), but got it anyway... have to say, for first 10 hours I agree'd with most of what's in this video, but still enjoyed it, but as soon as I properly understood the battle system... it's incredibly satisfying when you pull of some great combo's and take down a unique mob a few levels higher than you, I'm loving the game a lot and love the deep customisation it has, there is a lot you can tinker with, and it's a lot of fun! Completely 100% behind you on those guards on the megaship... man, they drove me nuts :D
"The battle themes are *visceral*." _Walks up to a gang of stationary puppy-wolves and hacks them down with a whiffle bat butter-knife as if on auto-pilot while the score pretends like this is the most interesting and exciting thing ever._
I would DEFINITELY watch an hour long video about JRPG battle mechanics. Though to be fair, your content is so damn delightful I'd probably watch you talk about manatees for four hours.
Hey Tim Rogers Thank you for another great review (Although you never call a review a review, except for Dragon Quest XI which I played thank to you). Shout out to 90's Instruction manual.
Why limit yourself to just one hour for your JRPG Battle System video? Make it 2 and I'll drink a six pack and eat popcorn while watching it on my TV on a Friday night
It bugs me enough to point out: Dromarch says "Make haste and RETRIEVE IT," referring to the green potion bottle that flew off just as he started talking in the video. Dromarch is a healing Blade, so many of his voice clips focus on keeping the party at good health.
For what it's worth, I barely remember JRPG instruction manuals - the good, SNES, in-color variety, anyway. Back then, I either rented the games and never got a manual, or bought them used (I called half a dozen stores looking for the best price for Super Mario RPG, which varied even between Target and Wal-Mart, and the best price was $55 for a used copy at a mom and pop used game store). Anyway, I loved this review of the game. I can tell that a lot of stuff is going to drive me crazy, and a lot of other stuff is going to be a lot of fun.
Aw I think it's a nice change of pace to have normal accents be in a major game. Not that I don't like American accents but yeah it nice, it's different. I also miss the manuals.
I think this reflects why my fondness for JRPGs has waned over time (aside from me just getting older). I was more willing to put up with overbearing exposition and tutorializing when the systems were simpler and less profuse. Recent JRPGs like Xenoblade pile systems on top of systems that, even if I *wanted* to manage them all, result in tedious tutorials and "idiotic protagonist" dialogue that I can't tolerate for very long anymore.
Having played through all the previous Xeno games (even the profoundly trainwreck-y Xenosaga) I love Tetsuya Takahashi for his crazy sense of thematic and physical scope and his wild sci-fi detours into Judeo-Christian mysticism, yet hate him for his total lack of focus or restraint and grating taste in animu aesthetics. I remember reading somewhere that Japanese players also complained about the repetitive voice clips in these games, so it’s not (just) a cultural thing.
Dromarch actually says " Make haste and retrieve them " when hp potions spawns, to inform you that you should grab the potions before they disappear, he doesn't say " retreat " :)
When I first saw the red girl's design I thought she looked like an Inori Yuzuriha clone. Now that I watched this, I am convinced that she truly *is* an Inori Yuzuriha clone.
oh, just realized i miss read it........ but could you make one? also a 1 hour tutorial for each character that joins the group to help us have a better appreciation of their abilities? thank you
I felt the same way about Dromarch, but he's actually saying "make haste and retrieve it", referencing when a HP potion drops. Still annoying, but makes more sense.
THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME DON'T FORGET ME DON'T FORGET ME DON'T FORGET ME DON'T FORGET ME DON'T FORGET ME -- YA DUN YA DUN YA DUN YA DUN YA DUN YA DUN MECH MECH SDRONGA, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIYAAAA OMFG Japanese dub 4 Life.
Hey, tiny correction: Yasunori Mitsuda didn’t compose ALL the music for this game. The battle themes were handled by a composer group called ACE, and I believe a lot of the field themes were composed by a talented (relative) newbie called Manami Kiyota, both of whom also worked on the first Xenoblade. I think Mitsuda mostly handled “event music”.
Yeah, neither the battle nor field theme in the video were composed by Mitsuda, according to the soundtrack samplers out right now. It's an oversimplification that you see a lot with Japanese soundtracks especially, pinning the entire soundtrack on a marquee artist. Meguro with Persona and Okabe with Nier are major examples from this year.
I regret to inform you that I would definitely watch an hour long video about JRPG mechanic design
I lament the inevitability of my confirmation of your informing us of this.
well i guess that settles it
help me make it jaffe
I'm working on a JRPG battle system right now and looking for any and all design resources, would really love this too!
Yeah okay, let's do it
second.
ONE HOUR JRPG BATTLE SYSTEM VIDEO
I still need it
i guess it's kind of off topic but does anyone know of a good website to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Nikolai Sawyer I would suggest FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
@Kayson Malakai Definitely, I've been watching on FlixZone for since march myself =)
@Kayson Malakai Thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service =) Appreciate it !!
I would watch the shit out of a JRPG battle video
I will watch every video Tim Rogers makes until I die, not hungry. As he would have wanted.
Tim Rogers: continue being Tim Rogers, please.
Tim, your videos are a treasure.
And, yes, we need a one hour video about JRPG battle systems.
This is my first time watching one of your videos and I love your voice and the way you speak and the things you speak. I could listen to you talk about video games all day. Please do.
Tim Rogers is an absolute treasure
I'd watch the hell out of a JRPG battle system video. Specifically an hour long video of such a topic
Plus one for that hour long JRPG battle system video. After watching those FFVII videos I think it’d be a good one.
DEAR TIM ROGERS PLEASE MAKE A ONE HOUR VIDEO ABOUT JRPG COMBAT MECHANICS.
I want that so much I even held down shift instead of using caps lock.
make the one hour battle system video please.
JRPG instruction manual shout out, Tim.
tim rogers cured my irony poisoning
I think that battle system video needs to be made.
Glad i stuck through that initially off putting first bit of the video
I ended up liking this enough to now look out for this guy's content in the future
good shit
+1 for the one hour JRPG battle system video!
5:26 That Voice is actually Gramps yelling “Make haste and RETRIEVE IT.” It’s every time a potion gets spawned 🙂
This is excellent content, more of this please!
Please keep making videos like this. In fact just dedicate a whole channel to videos like this.
In the 5 years since you wrote this, I'm so glad he did
I love this reviewer... awesome voice, awesome japanese knowledge and hilaaariouos humor. This is how reviews should be!
probably my one and ONLY likeable guy working in Kotaku
This was awesome. I’d love to see more long videos like this.
"[Mitsuda's] battle themes are visceral."
[irritating sound effect and voice clip apocalypse]
"The battle themes are *visceral*."
_Walks up to a gang of stationary puppy-wolves and hacks them down with a whiffle bat butter-knife as if on auto-pilot while the score pretends like this is the most interesting and exciting thing ever._
I mean, you can't just play groose's theme whenever you fight low level trash in an rpg
....
or maybe you can?
I effin' love the smell of old JRPG instruction manuals and would buy it in huffable form. AND DO THAT ONE HOUR VIDEO, IT WOULD BE AMAZING.
I regret to inform you, Tim, that Dromarch actually says “Make haste and retrieve it” whenever his driver spawns a potion bottle 👍
Thanks for making this video. It shows exactly what I think about the game but with a great sense of humor. And I like the game quite a bit.
Gimmie that fukken JRPG battle system video.
"I can't wait for that Japanese Voice Acting DLC out of 10" lol dead.
"DONT FORGET ME!" "THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME?????" "YERH DONE!"
buddy would i ever watch a one hour jrpg battle system video
This is incredibly amusing. More please!

_Xenoblade Chronicle 2's First 23 Minutes In Six Hours_
I gotta say your criticism is very entertaining! 😁 The game itself... I just love in part for all the shortcomings you're highlighting.
I would DEFINITELY watch an hour long video about JRPG battle mechanics. Though to be fair, your content is so damn delightful I'd probably watch you talk about manatees for four hours.
i, uh, happen to know sort of a lot about manatees, by the way (not even joking)
If you do it, I WILL watch it.
I've never had a problem with bad voice acting. Growing up in 90's anime made me pretty numb to it haha. It has it's charm.
ROFL tim rogers- "jrpgs instuctions manuals they were huge and glossy and they smelled nice, they smelled like anime, i miss them" dead.
Tim Rogers is like if deadpool would review videogames. He is funny, cynical and crazy. Love it. Keep up the good work.
This game is awesome, the battle system alone is worth it. Give it a shot!
i was still reeling from the segway into your signoff and then the hyper-fast japanese version killed me
Haven't started the video yet. Just wanted to say that on the off-chance that Tim mentions making a video about JRPG battle systems, I'd watch it.
i loved this video and you are my new favorite thing at kotaku
Make the video about JRPG battle systems! Also, I would do the same thing with my JRPG instruction manuals. I miss instruction manuals....
absolutely fantastic vid. love your content!
ONE HOUR JRPG BATTLE SYSTEM VIDEO PLZ!
I adore this man.
Hey Tim Rogers Thank you for another great review (Although you never call a review a review, except for Dragon Quest XI which I played thank to you).
Shout out to 90's Instruction manual.
Yes id watch anything you make..including a 1 hour video on JRPG battle systems.
I like the voice acting, except.........
REX CANT SCREAM LIKE SHULK
I don't know what I love more: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Tim Rogers
Yeah, I also want that hour long video about JRPG battle systems…
Sick with a fever right now, thanks for making me feel somewhat better.
Why limit yourself to just one hour for your JRPG Battle System video? Make it 2 and I'll drink a six pack and eat popcorn while watching it on my TV on a Friday night
did i just watch pyra jump off the building at 21:13?
It bugs me enough to point out: Dromarch says "Make haste and RETRIEVE IT," referring to the green potion bottle that flew off just as he started talking in the video. Dromarch is a healing Blade, so many of his voice clips focus on keeping the party at good health.
Actually not all of the music is composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. ACE+ are also involved again.^^
>7:09
I cracked up so hard I started coughing
EDIT: You're making that hour long video bud, sorry
Wasn’t expecting a David Mamet home in this JRPG video, and I love it.
Make that RPG battle system video! Also make an RPG towns video!! Woahhh yeah!!!
Great video Tim.
JRPG Mechanic Video pls.

An hour long JRPG Battle System video? Very yes
I don't care if they destroy a game I love or praise it, I just love to listen to this guy.
Aw I think it's a nice change of pace to have normal accents be in a major game. Not that I don't like American accents but yeah it nice, it's different.

*bad Billy Connolly impression* THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME

Best review ever. Great job seriously, i loved the way you explained everything in this game.
holdin out for that one hour video
Also: I literally used to eat cold cereal and read JRPG instruction manuals, word up
rising star ;)
If Kotaku.com's Tim Rogers does not make a one hour video on JRPG battle systems I will be very upset
A Tim Rogers video? I’ll take 20
Very good, entertaining video.
Almost makes me regret about selling my copy of the game. Almost.
I have two tattoos from this game - issa good one
ビデオ制作を止めないで
あなたを愛してます Tim Rogers!
I can’t admit that this game was very good, but there was something special about that it that compelled me to finish it.
Wow, thanks for making me laugh - a lot!
I would clear my schedule to watch one hour video about jrpg battle system
Dromarch actually says " Make haste and retrieve them " when hp potions spawns, to inform you that you should grab the potions before they disappear, he doesn't say " retreat " :)
Perfect ending.
I would watch that, not gonna lie, still waiting in 2020 Rogers
Yo Tim I do remember them!
Still waiting on the 1 hour battle system.
When I first saw the red girl's design I thought she looked like an Inori Yuzuriha clone.
Now that I watched this, I am convinced that she truly *is* an Inori Yuzuriha clone.
This is next level. Rogers is the GOAT
The goat? I see many goats along the mountain path however I never thought much of them.
Tim Rogers, I LIKE YOUR ATTITUDE!!!
oh, just realized i miss read it........ but could you make one? also a 1 hour tutorial for each character that joins the group to help us have a better appreciation of their abilities? thank you

Great video men
WORST REVIEWER EVER, WORST REVIEW EVER MADE. YOU SUCK
fallout series needs a video like this too , make it happen man !
Really do miss those old JRPG manuals.
"Man, I don't have the Monoceros's number..."
Where is the next FFVII found in translation episode??? How dare you, Tim Rogers, do anything other than that series.
I would 1000% watch that video on battle systems
