Wild West rootin' rootin' six-gun shooting action is the order of the day, in this coin-op classic by Konami. Sunset Riders features some excellent audiovisuals for the time, and the 4-player coop offers up some pretty manic gameplay.
In terms of influences, I think the game shares some DNA with the likes of Sega's Shinobi and Namco's Rolling Thunder. Sunset Riders feels like an evolution of that particular style of platform shooter, albeit faster paced and with better graphics.
Overall, Sunset Riders is great fun. It's certainly a challenge, but it's also not ridiculously unfair like so many other arcade titles. Fans of run and gun games will find plenty to like here.

You can always tell an arcade game when you have to shoot the boss 1000 times to kill them.

There are so many amazing Spaghetti Western movies worth your time (besides the Leone stuff) - Try Day Of Anger (1967) for a start, it's brilliant.

An arcade classic with surprisingly sane difficulty. Very few gotcha moments. I'd wager a seasoned gamer could beat the game first time on about $2. It's funny how other than Chief Scalpem, all the bosses are sort of pushovers, then you get to Richard Rose and he just goes NUTS.
Another konami classic they should try and revive.

Sunset Riders is a bonafide classic hands down. Play the SNES version a lot back in the day and man the soundtrack was ace, colors pop like candy and plus it was fair and challenging. I always pick Cormano because he reminds of Clint's character from the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Thanks for the awesome throwback Al!

I never undestood why games like this have no sequels.
Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa was kind of a spiritual successor to this game. That being even if it had noting to do with Sunset Riders besides the same gameplay, and what not though.
There's Mythic Warriors but that game is a bit of a downer
Sometimes they just don't need a sequel to spoil things, as we've seen in the case of other titles.
This game probably stayed a classic for that reason.

By the way, isn’t anyone going to mention how all the Sunset Riders all look like Tom Petty? Even Cormando looks like Tom Petty if he were Hispanic!
A magnificent Konami game with very good soundtracks. Also you finish the game with one of the two characters that have the type of shot that is more difficult to handle, but that I like more, than the burst shot of the other 2 characters.
The two levels of bonus you make them perfect. You get to the Indian chief without losing any life, so you have to do it by dodging 4 knives instead of 3.
Impeccable, I love this game and I dominate it a lot but this gameplay is second to none.

I Never managed to beat this game back in the day so I tried it with emulation and barely made it with save game states.....I really stuck.

In the Smith Bros. fight it is possible to rescue all three girls. While you are at the incibility state after you save one you can jump to the other side and save the other one.
