I’m more of a beach volleyball player (never hardly play indoor) but I try and follow your advice in terms of a jump topspin serve so more of that especially in terms of certain spots
for beach volleyball you forgot the "sky". You simply try to put the ball as high as you can so the opponent has du look into the sun for example or into the rain or it is hard to predict because of some wind or something. Your feets point parralel to the net. You hold the ball in your left hand(for me) right above the point where you want to hit it with your (for me) right arm. Then you go slighty into your knees and when you go upwards, you sling your arm into the ball. Try to aim for a steep angle. It feels like worms armageddon. Iam pretty sure you know what i mean!
Very insightful video! My main serve is the jump floater, but I feel like a lot of my strength goes wasted with it. I've been struggling with topspin serves since it seems my toss is very inaccurate, it never occured to me that i could try and use my hitting hand to toss more accurately! I'll definitely try that next pratise session!
Thanks for the info on how to apply different effects into the ball! I’ve seen the left spin but I didn’t know how to replicate. But I never knew about the backspin or the artie 🤯
Artie is his name. It’s unlikely anyone have heard of it if they don’t watch his videos. It’s an interesting take on how to apply spin since it can be very difficult to add spin to the side you’re hitting with, but it won’t be as effective on high level play. To truly get a monster spin on the serve, you need your fingers to almost wrap around the ball, which won’t happen with a backhanded hit, so the amount of spin you can get like this is limited. Although it is a very good practice tool to get a good motion into your wrists, since you have to turn your hand a lot, so would still recommend practicing it to get a good motion into your hitting rhythm when doing spin serves
the artie serve gave me insane amounts of power man! i really didnt expect it to work so well for me, but im notting getting the amount of spin as you do in the vid. do you have any tips for maximizing height and spin? keep up the great vids 🔥🔥
Yeah it's pretty crazy hey 🤣 If you want more spin I suggest deliberately contacting on 1 half of the ball. See what the effects may be. Then try change your follow through.
Hey Ardie! You mar remember me, may not, last year, i was in the KG Monday night, a young red head trying their best in volleyball, btw I've watched a lot of your videos and they've really helped me so thanks. And if you remember me, ill be rejoining next season
Coach whenever I do float serve or spike, my shoulder hurts really bad, they twists and stay lock before untwisting. I am worry about my biomechanics technique, can you do a video on arm position and shoulder position when serving? Anything related to prevent shoulder pains when serving and spiking would helps greatly
the issue is you using your shoulder to generate power, you need to use your core to generate power and the shoulder should act as a rubber band. search up "hip shoulder seperation" and watch some videos on spiking technique by torqVB
When learning my topspin jump serve I accidentally did a few hybrids. I thought it would be unrealistic to perfect that but seeing it in this video makes me want to try it
i have a problem on the spin serve... my launch its too short people tell me that i gotta wait altleast one second then start the approach. But i do my launch short so i start right away.
Don‘t learn top spin first! The hardest thing about any jump type serves is the toss. You have to figure out yourself how you wanna toss your ball (one hand or two hand). Whats also important is to master your normal float serve (being able to serve at any position with consistency).
It wouldn't be a bad thing to explore the top spin serve. You need to learn it first but I always encourage my players to explore what they want. Learning more about any skill boosts a player skills and that applies to other skills aswell.
Great question! Such a big topic! First thing that comes to mind is social skills. How can they communicate with their team, coach and ref. Might make a vid on it
Both! I think its important to think of your arm like a whip. Very flexible and quick. Then have a firm hand to contact and transfer the energy into the ball
With the same-hand topspin serve toss, I find that my toss is a little less accurate because I have to toss higher in order to give my arm time to "wind up" and be ready to hit. Any suggestions?
I recomend recording yourself. I believe our toss isn't as important as how we adjust to our toss. When watching over your recording wat h what breaks down first and try to adjust.
I do jump floaters but I usually jump as high as I can for those, I rarely see others do that and mostly just do a slight jump. Is a high jump just worse for jump floaters? Should I maybe switch and do jump top spin instead?
hey! I'm not coach artie but i have played for 3 years and still am, soo ill give my 2 cents. First thing for the jump float would be that if i was doing it i would want less of a jump so that you can push the back row back and force them to either use their hands or get them to have a bad pass from the upper portion of arms, with that you use a smaller jump to make sure when doing a float it stays in, also doing massive jumps all the time for serves can be tiring from personal experience lol. Second thing, i have no clue if it's worse but i don't think its as or more effective as doing a normal float or small jump float. last thing, if you feel you could use a harder serve for your level and you already have a good normal serve, going for a jump top spin could be a good option. Hope this helps! Again im just another player so if something doesn't sound right use your own intuition and im sure you'll do great.
After having practiced the serve for a couple of months Ive noticed that I have to jump a lot earlier if I want to do a high jump because as you said it will go out otherwise. It works pretty well that way, especially if I mix in jump floaters with less of a jump. As for it being tiring, I dont really mind since Im a middle and jump a lot anyway also Im switching with the libero soon after so its fine. I am practicing the jump top spin but for me the toss is so hard to do, so I wont be using it an a game anytime soon.
No way I remember you asked us for adivise on the last serve name and I said something along the line of "chicken wing" i think it was the top coment and you named it after that😘
Hey thanks for the video :) do you also have a tip for the hybid serve where you toss without spin and approach like a jump float but add topsin in the end?
its sort of like just hitting a normal set, setters dont put spin on the ball but you do. practise downballing against a wall, but just dont toss it with topspin, try to contact the ball with your whole hand, from the tip of your fingers to the base of your palm, all at one instantaneous moment of contact. also if you toss it a bit higher, it comes down faster so youre able to put on more topspin.
Hey Artie, I've been playing volleyball for 3 years now. My jump float serve is quite consistent and as a middle blocker I need it to be. I just sometimes still mess up by stupid mistakes like tossing too low or not tensing up my hand enough, how can I avoid this?
Hey i just started playing volleyball 3 months ago and i cant get my serves right , my coach recently told me that im going to be the middle blocker in our team, do you have any tips?
Have you learned underhand float serve? You might be thinking There's no such thing as a underhand float serve but there isi just discovered it earlier
You missed a very important serve: The one where you face the line backwards and serve looking down the opponents at the height of your buttocks. 😅 Kind of like they do the return in tennis.
I am new in volleyball I have a question Is height important in serving? Because every time I serve the ball doesn’t go beyond the net Is the problem with my height or the strength of my serve? please answerrr🥹
Height only becomes beneficial when you become an advanced player. As a beginner adds next to nothing for your serve! It's all in your technique. I actually made a video for serving technique! Give it a watch if you're interested!
@@coachartie thx for the reply since I wrote this comment I used to practice underarm serve I was really afraid that I wouldn’t do it because of my height you comforted me I would back to the overarm serve by watching ur videos thx again 🤍🤍(sorry for my English)

Would love to see further explanation on hybrids (wether adding float to spin toss or adding spin / power with a float toss)

Awesome ! Thank you from Canada. Middle school VB coach
Thanks for your support all the way from canada!!
at one point I got bored so I threw it like a top spin and then I tried to cancel the spin and it made a nice float serve when I got good at it
super helpful!
So happy! Thanks for the feedback!
The backhand serve has surprisingly great curve that can throw off opponents. I might be trying that lol

Good fight from all blacks today in the rwc!
Should you swing forward or to the side on the backhanded serve?
I contact the left half of the ball, and follow through with a strong angle on my hand. The motion is more forward than slice
I have one player who has killer underarm serve!!! She literally has speed and power behind it and she has a good targeting practice
A good serve is one that puts the opponent under pressure! Sound like she has one that does just that
Underrated

Good question ❓ the main contact area is my knuckles but I try flattern my hand as much as possible to get more contact space 🌌
What if you combine the artie server with a spike and make it to a sharp angle spike, lets call it the artie spike?
