Thanks so much for getting me involved in this! I loved everyone's songs!
Your song was hilarious. I love your videos far more than is probably healthy :)
The man himself
Your song is stuck in my head😵
Jay went full "Minecraft Villager" mode. I loved your submission!
Why does this have so less likes? Jay is very underated
I think 8-bit music theory's piece made me laugh the most because of what he said in the beginning, which also supports Jay Foreman's point on how we are expecting them to make us laugh so they might not be as effective at that.
Honestly, he did such a good job of misdirecting. Part of me really wanted to believe he was being subversive, but as I looked at his face I just thought, "Man, poor guy." Then it turned out he was actually being subversive.
I thing what really makes his piece funny though is imagining the embarrassment of the band trying to be professional while the soloist clearly is not.
@@chiju For me it was clear, he didn't tell the truth at the beginning since he didn't say what he thought the email stated instead.
I did expect that what he said wasn't true, but his piece was simply the funniest to me anyway
@@chiju I thought he was trying to be subversive until it started and was actually really good before the solo came in and caught me off guard
ahaha, that was ridiculous, great job guys!
hahaha I was reading the comments to see if anyone's gonna mention you
Hey, it’s Adam! Love your content!
Which one made you laugh the most, Adam?
Should have been on this one too
Now do the same challenge with the lick!
I loved 8-bit music theory’s perfect embarrassed introduction to his piece which was its own bit of brilliance. And he managed to look genuinely amused through all the other pieces-his reactions were really my favorites.
he does tend to take the stage on these types of videos
It kind of reminds me of cbat
Quite brutal asking each composer to explain their joke before showing it!
I love that 8-bit subverted that. :-)
Imagine the email
"Hey this song is great. Now I just need you to explain how it's funny"
or the forced laughter reactions to others' work, where ordinarily you'd probably not laugh.
Yeah, Jimmy Carr's analogy on analysing jokes - Its like a classroom vivisection of a frog. Nobody is really interested and the frog dies anyway.
Pure music doesnt inherently contain a hard message and comedy needs stark definition for it to work. Therefore, even without the frog killing explanation to introduce the piece, none of these compositions really accomplish the task. At best they could be used as a soundtrack to a comedy scene but fail as the self contained comedy performance.
@@griffindance i feel bad for the frog
I love how Jay looks completely disgusted during the entire piece and then after says "I loved that"
Honesty, is such a lovely word...and everybody...bla bla bla
Autastic
Everyone else: Vibes to the Music
Jay: *Staring on the stream intensifies*
:D
He's very British.
I love that justice cow just grooves away and ocasionally says "this sounds like a dad putting on pants"
and they're so right too... i wasn't thinking it before but once they put the picture in my head i can totally see this playing as the audio for an animated pixar short film starring a man with a pear-shaped body trying to squeeze into his pants.
everybody: laughing
justice cow: unironically vibing
The false ending of Aimee's song really made me laugh. Jay Foreman's song was also great. Both of them were hilarious.
Hers was really genius in its absurdity. And at the end when it both changed keys and kept going... I really laughed out loud.
Made me think of Dudley Moore doing a piece in the style of Beethoven, and failing to actually finish it about 6 times.
The II-#5-#1 before the last key change was when it was like “nope, there’s still more to go”
The false ending was a funny concept, but like all great jokes, what really made it was the excellent comedic timing.
The first song reminds me of the lord of the ring's last movie ending. You thought it end, but then it went on and have 8 different ending-like moment. The longest ending sequence i've ever seen so far
This was such a fun project, glad I could be a part of it! Thanks for putting the video together!
Your reaction to the first piece was so enjoyable to watch!!
I loved your performance 8BMT. Very moving 😅
Oh man, your piece reminds me my wedding - the organist was pretty good player but terrible singer and throughout the ceremony I couldn't help but smile/abstain from laughing/just laugh on his missed vocal notes. Fact that my best friend was the minister conducting the ceremony directly in front of me, privately also pianist and music geek, didn't help as you might imagine!
Thanks for this :)
Your piece reminded me so much of the "Jurassic Park Melodica Cover". I loved it!
A spiritual successor to PDQ Bach! Bravo!
I was expecting a "serious" music theory analysis as to *why* music could elicit laughter.... what I got is a generous helping of hilariously composed tracks. Nice!
That's actually a trend on music RUclips that has been going on for a few years
@@RedHair651 And at least for a century (go hear some of Darius Milhaud's compositions, like "Le boeuf sur le toit" (the beef on the roof).
I like that 8-bit Music Theory lowered everyone's expectations with his intro. That was a smart move (also, the piece itself was executed really well given the context).
Sylvy
11:52 “Sounds like a dad putting on pants” 😂 that was so on-point haha!
mmmmm
such a specific yet accurate description
It is very much in the style of German comedian Helge Schneider
I can see Homer Simpson so clearly in this song...
I find that Ben Levin and the people who work with him regularly (Justice Cow being his bandmate and wife) function in a different wavelength than other humans. And I mean it in the best way possible.
Such a unique experience - to have no other goal than to make people laugh. And then to watch this and SMILE the whole time. Thanks Alan and everyone for making it happen.
You did aweeeeeeesome!!!! :)
the key changes in your song were absolute art, I just want you to know that
Aimee, You are great in these collective composition videos, I guess you just write what you're supposed to write with the right sensibility to create the desired effect on the listeners. That's it ! your piece really made me laugh , that end was hilarious, lol.
You transcend time and space girl, posting this comment two days prior release 😂 I loved your song, my favorite just after jay foreman's
You floored me with the false finishes, it's like more than being a funny song it just happened to be a song, and it had the mechanics of humor applied to it magnificently. Just brilliant.
"Nothing funnier than brass with a mute." Miles Davis and his Harmon mute swear violently from the afterlife.
Jay Foreman's "Bim Bim Bim" uses a mixture of funny lyrics *and* funny music, so he's already an expert in this field.
So disgustingly catchy 😂
JAY FOREMAN in the same YT universe with David bennet and the bunch. Ah, this makes me so happy!
This was such a pleasant surprise!
Not even something that I considered would ever occur.
Loved this.
Such an unexpected collab but very welcome
It's happened again
Just like verbal and practical jokes, musical jokes seem to revolve around not only sillines, but also/mainly around the element of surprise
Contrast is the funniest thing
Sounds like the Spanish Inquisition
@@kellydalstok8900 wasn't expecting that!
Now I want to make something where Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue’s initial glissando never stops and gradually transcends into a Shepard’s tone
I fucking love that
Do it mang, I want to hear that!
Yes!
I admire Justice Cow's ability to vibe to anything
18:06 I'll never forget the time Jay edited the intro song to Map Men so it was out of synch with itself and I commented on it and he replied to my comment saying "it's our intro and we do whatever we want with it" man's a genius and here's the explanation
the map men intro might be the only example of aleatoric musical comedy
We're the men. And this is the music. Lol.
hahahahahahah I love how they mess with it every time
The one that sticks out to me is “Map Men, Map Men, Map Map Map Men Men… Men”
@@logan_page that's one of my favourites as well!!
I can’t believe Radiohead and Beatles didn’t show up in this video 😂
Especially considering how famously light hearted and humorous Radiohead’s music is!
He should have played "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number" by the Beatles.
@@moscowguitarman I think he's just saying that because David is well known for being obsessed with those 2 bands. Not because their music is funny.
Oh just let it be already…
@@moscowguitarman I genuinely think that We Suck Young Blood is Radiohead doing a joke song. It's as if they're taking their reputation for being grim and miserable, and exaggerating it as much as possible.
18:06 Jay is basically describing why the map men intro is funny
Men men men
🎶 Map men, map men
Map, map, map men, men 🎶
Aimee's false endings made me laugh so hard and I loved it so much, but 8-bit Music Theory's song was the best. It had the same feeling as the wedding scene in The Princess Bride, where you think it's going to be so regal and grand, but then you have an unexpected squeaking that is just doing its best but can't quite make it.
"I wonder if he played this himself" and "now it's just so beautiful... oh ok" along with David's pained laughter sum up 8-bit's performance perfectly
the only thing that would have made it better would be recorder but idk, it might taint this masterpiece
I would have just made a shitty flute song. Those always crack me up.
Edit: Oh hey, there it is. 😂
lmao I love that channel
I would have just put a fart sound into the song
@@user-pn3pu1ll9k a lot of fart sounds

“This makes me think of like, a dad putting on pants.”

Me: GOD-
It was such an on-point observation, it totally caught me off guard as well
I find that Ben Levin and the people who work with him regularly function in a different wavelength than other humans. And I mean it in the best way possible.
it seems like no one noticed the absolute genius of trustfund ozu sneaking in the Seinfeld bass and the first part of the Seinfeld theme into their piece, wonderful
The Jay Foreman one made me think of someone sitting on the toilet, doing no. 2, with their guitar.
I think that's how Owner of a Lonely Heart was written
It's always nice to see Jay Foreman. One of the funniest RUclipsrs I watch.

David “I hope you enjoyed this slightly different video”
Me: is it because there’s no Beatles nor Radiohead references?
Trying to make someone laugh takes so much bravery and all the pieces worked so well, such a good idea for a video I never thought could be pulled off
omg never knew what 8 bit music theory looked like in real life.
I should have just titled this video: “8-bit music theory FACE REVEAL!” 🤣
I'm pretty sure he's shown his face in one of the other challenges of this sort.
@@primalaspie several
I'm pretty sure I'll still manage to get mixed up between 8-bit Music Theory and 12tone. Just cuz they're both numbers.
Trust Fund Ozu's piece sounds like a parody on Steve Vai having discovered some new effects.
Yeah, I just posted that it reminds me a bit of Zappa in his Synclavier phase.
seems a try to emulate the very funny igorrr
Its like Igorrr and 100 gecs had a baby
I find contrast to be the funniest thing. Beethoven's 5th symphony I think has the point with a solo woodwind where it sounds like it's gonna be a very longing, melancholic ending, and all of a sudden, the main theme just cuts it off and starts again. That's always made me laugh.
i mentioned in another comment that beethoven also makes me laugh too, because he does stuff like this all the time.
right off the jump his first symphony makes me laugh because it opens up with a blistering I7-IV, meant to sound like a V7-I - but then just immediately goes off into a completely different direction.
Jay is so right about the context! What makes us laugh is usually a setup, and then something that isn't what we expect. So the context is a big part of the joke. Like a different outcome, an unexpected change - or the absence of an expected occurrence. Because of this, I found the more conventional pieces funnier, since I believe I know where they are going. The stacked noices not so much
Honestly, if I heard someone play the lick I'd laugh
8-bit's sounds like what the soundtrack to my life would be
11:52 - "It makes me think of like.. a dad putting on pants"
LOOOOL this comment got me good. It made me laugh for the rest of the song cause it's such a perfect description 😂
Not gonna lie, The Hoot's bass line absolutely slaps. Great job!
Thanks! 😂😀😃
I see Kanye's "Lift Yourself" has started to take influence in music.
Very nice comment
Back at a summer camp a few years ago the counselors played this every day on a boombox really loudly and it never got old so funny
Is that the poopydeescoop one ?

Haha yes. Chipmunks beware!
@@DavidBennettPiano Track 7 of ELO’s “Out of the Blue” album is Jeff Lynne being wonderfully silly.
Anybody interested in Trust Fund Ozu (Faye) should check her band Thank You Scientist. She's an *amazing* drummer and TYS is one of my favorite bands; progressive rock/metal with a good handful of jazz fusion. Incredible
Yes I'm so glad i found her! She's fantastic
They succeeded, beyond their wildest dreams. Tears streaming down my face.
Ngl, 8bit music theory got me lol
Some classic British understated reacting from Jay there followed by insightful commentary - love it.
1) this whole exercise feels like an old school RUclips collab that would not have felt out of place in 2009 and I love it.
2) the lead-away is a cornerstone of comedy. Establish an expectation with a pattern and then go the other way.
I did a lot of exhaling from my nose and smiling, but the “this reminds me of a dad putting on pants” sent me over the edge into a gut laugh. Well done.
Watching Aimee and 8-bit laugh was usually enough to get me laughing regardless of what else was happening. Those two have real contagious laughs lol.
i'm a simple man, you could just play *the lick* on a piano, and i'll break laughing...
Aimee Nolte gets my top-level nod. A throwback to 40's cartoons, but it still works!
I can't believe nobody commented on the very elegant use of the Seinfeld theme throughout Trust Fund Ozu's piece!
Map men, map men, map map map men men ...men!!
Mr. Bean routines could be built around each of these. Also reminds one of a Victor Borge routine. Thanks for the laugh
Trust Fund Ozu's one sounds like the soundtrack to a nineties (very specifically 90's) pinball machine.
Damn, you guys managed to beat even C418’s Stal!
By the way, I had actually forgotten that Jay is also a musician
They're all funny but I think Trust Fund Ozu has the closest sense of humor to me specifically. I need that song as my alarm lol
Same. When I thought about what I would’ve done for this, I thought some combination of “I need help immediately” by 100 gecs and idk cypergrind.
Funnily enough, I think her song was the one I laughed at the least, as it didn’t subvert my expectations, but instead met them. Absolute banger tho
At the first I was like this is kinda cool but I cracked with the seinfeld lick.
@@madschtz I immediately thought of 100 gecs as well! And I completely agree it met too many expectations but it's still a banger
interesting because that was the only song that didn't make me laugh at all
there's actually one kind of instrumental music that always makes people laugh, meme music!
You just have to play the first 4 notes of megalovania and I'll laugh
D-D-D-A
Now I'm gonna be the باعوص that I always am and say: meme music isn't funny. Americans just have no sense of humor and are ready to laugh at anything. There's literally nothing funny about Megalovania, it's just a video game character theme. There's nothing funny about Never Gonna Give You Up, it's just a 80s pop love song that made a dude famous, There's nothing funny about Bring Back To Life, it's a song about depression. There's nothing funny about Crawling, it's a song about drug addiction written by a man who literally killed himself because of said drug addiction. Americans just hate serious stuff and try to run away from reality by laughing it off, that's why y'all never get anything done.

Those were very funny!! You guys really nailed down all of the things that would make someone laugh in music, and you each approached it in a pretty different way!
Well done to all composers! As per usual, these videos remind me of the myriad of ways that one can create music and it really recharges my creative energy!
I love how Justice Cow was just vibing to all of the songs
She's so cool!
8-bit music theory is so funny hahahah
My colleague showed me a video of his daughter playing in a school concert that was like 8-bit's piece on steroids. About 8 kids all playing out of tune brass. It was so funny. We watched it every day at work to cheer us up.
Honestly, outstanding efforts from you all. What a fun and interesting concept.
I have to agree with some of the other commentators here: kazzoo. Kazzoo, cow bell, and accordion!! Metal accordion.
You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) by The Beatles always makes me smile, and it's not because of the lyrics.
That song is just absurd 😂
So many things to love about this video. Happy to see you doing a collab, David, Time to check these other musicians out.
To be honest, I was worried about the premise. I thought it might land smack dab on its face. But, boy was I wrong. Each entry had a charm that left me laughing
"Concerto for a Casual Wind Instrument" came close to getting me falling out of my chair.
Thanks to you and your fellow musicians for getting my eyes welling up with tears of utter joy,
Why so many comments about “oh if you want funny music, you should listen to this link, etc?” How is that helpful? These composers had to come up with something original! And they’re done! smh Splendid job all!
Tim Minchin's "Inflatable You" is hilarious with the lyrics, but the piano solo is comedy gold too.
That Trust Fund Ozu track sounded like something Squarepusher might have done 20 years ago. And that's a good thing.
Seeing Jay Foreman and Trust Fund Ozu in the same vid is the most unexpected combo of people I love but ever expected to happen but here we are
Jay Foreman : "serious during the whole video"
"Farting noise"
Jay Foreman : HAHAHA !
Perfect !
man, what a great video, can't wait to see more collaborations in the future
Thanks 😀
Some sounded like Pink Floyd's - "Several species of small fury animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict."
Beautiful edit. I am a fan of all of you. Thank you.
What a great idea! I loved all of your works!
David Bennetts modern interpretation of 'revolution 9'
Les Dawson playing the piano is probably one of the best examples of deliberately funny music that I can think of. Great challenge and fun video.
Yes! I was waiting for someone to mention Les Dawson.
I feel like Frank Zappa would have been good at this...
Baby snakkkes
This video reminds me of the 1960's when my friend Garry Shandling, then an undergraduate student in electrical engineering, was trying to analyze what makes jokes funny. I don't know if he thought he succeeded in understanding it, but he did make many millions of dollars in the humor industry.
Poor 8-bit music theory. I wish he actually read the email. Would've been nice to see what funny song he would make.
@Shiruba As a parent having sat through untold number of "talent shows", the cringe factor with the trumpet is what made it so funny to me. Especially as everyone in the audience then has to clap as if saying "Oh, no dear, you did soooo well."
@@bluespupil414 it was not a trumpet. It was a clarinet or other reed instrument. The characteristic squeeks only come from reed instruments.
Sounded like an oboe. In fact, like me on oboe.
Somehow, David managed not to mention either The Beatles or Radiohead in this video. I at least expected him to name-check "Obladi Oblada".
I think of my friend on banjo:
"Hey, want to hear the world's shortest bluegrass song?" *plays a turnaround that is simultaneously an intro and outro*
Great vid!
Thanks 😃
Trust Fund Ozu's track just sounds like an Igorrr track.
yeah i really liked it
If you find Igorrr's music interesting, you might also like the band named "Pryapisme". Try listening "La Boetie Stochastic Process" or "A la Zheuleuleu" for a start.
Came here to say this
Justice Cow with hands down the best intro to any piece of media.
love how we only get to see 8bit music theory's face on channels that arent their own lol
Bringing this back to The Beatles for a sec, I've always laughed out loud at that random brass section after the "band begins to play" line.
*in 'Yellow Submarine'.

David Bennett's piece is the definition of we pimp chimpin'
All of these were great. I liked yours the best, David. Although the ones that used fart sound effects were close seconds.
Farts are objectively funny 😀
Do more videos like this! This is so awesome to watch! Also, have Aimee Nolte on more, we loved her!!!
I think the observation of "Knowing this is meant to make you laugh already lowers your guard" in pretty vital here, because I found myself waiting for the, err, "punchline" rather than listening to the piece itself.
Jay is now a Minecraft villager
This music could accompany funny silent videos which would make people laugh because I definitely pictured funny scenes while listening to these!
With the point in mind that Jay Foreman said that we are being told to laugh at the music in advance setting the bar higher, the music seems especially good fulfilling it’s purpose to make the listener giggle. Without the framing “music that makes you laugh” it surely would amuse the majority. Mad respect to the composers. 🎩
The monkey song is gonna be stuck in my head for the next week.
Amazing Collaboration, David! These pieces were really amusing to listen to. I have a big soft spot for really weird music, so thank you for this! And a great cause that this is going to as well!
Thanks Alex 😃
