Dude I can soooo imagine a partying fighting say a green dragon when the Druid turns into a trex and charges. Taking the dragons neck in its jaws and body checking it into a rock outcropping or a set of trees! The Rex has the muscle to keep the dragon pined for a few seconds at least!
This story sounds a lot more likely than what a guy in my group did. We followed the normal start, so we ended up with 50 gold before setting out. Our fighter, whose flaw was that he was a gambler, bet 50 gold that the slowest dino, the fish one, would win the deadly race. Long story short the trex ate the competition, so we actually won, resulting in a party of lvl 1 adventurers walking around with 600 gold.
A great follow up encounter would be someone or a group of people attempting to rob you after the race, due to them betting on the competition that lost.
@@SeanLaMontagne I think something like that did happen, and we convinced them that it was somebody else's fault. I think it resulted in some big scary dude beating up the people who were gonna rob us.
I want to play a game with all kobold rouges so they use cower and pack tactics and beat the living crap of anything that stares at them funny then steals their stuff and leaves them on the ground.
I was gonna go as a Kobold Paladin, he was picked by a god because of a joke. While everyone is wanting to be healed, a Kobold wearing holy armor and having a maul is looting shit
In one of the games I'm playing, our levels 3 and 4 party hit a random encounter and the DM rolled a T-Rex. The party's paladin panics and drinks a potion of invisibility. I'm playing a Half-Orc Barbarian. I had a potion of animal friendship so I'm positioning myself in the back of the party, so I can use it when the T-Rex is in range, basically leaving the party Rogue in front as the meat shield while everyone else screams "What are you doing? You're the Barbarian!" Next round, the T-Rex comes into range and I'm able to control it. After a short rest, I end up riding the T-Rex into the woods while the rest of the party doesn't follow. The T-Rex and kill a pair of hill giants, a pair of trolls, and after the T-Rex is damaged enough, I beat it to death with my maul while I'm riding it, leaving our DM saying "you didn't break my game... you didn't break my game... you didn't break my game..." I think I was two levels ahead of the rest of the party when I found them again.
Gotta do a build for Death from Darksiders 2. Definitely a multiclass of Death Cleric and a Necromancer.....probably Monk as well cause of his speed and Dexterity advantages.
My party was running away from a group of knights coming to capture them for a crime they didn't commit, and when they escaped they took a long rest. When they woke up, an Allosaurus was searching through their camp for rations. I wanted this encounter to be an example of how the new world they were to be entering would be dangerous. I took precautions and set its health to 170. Didn't stop the Druid from wanting to tame it. I told her roll for disadvantage on the Animal Handing, and the DC would be 21. She rolls, hits two Nat 20s, and fucking tames an Allosaurus. Fucking fantastic. Definitely giving it a health decrease to about 90, since they're 1st levels
When we got to the dino races our DM let the druid transform into an allosaurus. I said hang on, I got the perfect music for this moment and put on an Initial D playlist. Our druid won the race by hitting a natural 20 on the home stretch and passing the leader right at the finish line. I remember that race a lot more clearly than the rest of Tomb of Annihilation, which honestly turned into a huge slog where we spent weeks lost in the jungle 😂
pterodactyls are not dinosaurs. there are many examples of convergent evolution in sauropsids and there are several dinosaurs which had similar traits to pterosaurs, such as the big boy we all know and love, quetzecoatlus.
For a PC to ride a Velociraptor as a mount in 5e, one would need to be a Gnome or Halfling under the effects of a Potion of Diminution and the Velociraptor would need a Potion of Growth. Thus changing the PC to a tiny size creature and the mount to a small. But the visual of an elf riding a velociraptor, like that of a full grown man on a kiddie trike, his knees dragging in the dirt as this little lizard claws it’s way to the finish line at its top encumbered speed of 5ft.

Me and my party tried to rig the dinosaur races by giving all of the dinosaurs a bum leg, we spent the whole day planning this then I also rolled a one at the very end and almost got caught.
My group is going through this now. One player was taking part in the races for fun. His best friend and another party member both took a position over the course. They locked eyes, nodded, and both proceeded to fail at cheating the race (the best friend tried to cause fear on the player dino because he bet against him, the other player tried to buff the party dino) And thats the story of our first tun in with the law.
I ran this about a year ago... So they bet on the dinosaur races... Independently. My younger brother who was a shadow Monk decided to get a front row seat... And at the right moment when the dinosaurs got in front of him... He cast Darkness on the racetrack... Let's just say that the dinosaurs didn't like that very much
Our dinosaur race was great...first the dwarf barbarian didn’t want to ride a dinosaur he wanted to ride his pet pig Brutus. After decorating the pig and some deception checks all the racers are ready to race, the aasimar ranger wanted to bet all her gold on the pig because she knew the barbarian would do anything to win. suddenly the firbolg paladin and the goblin rouge roll up and join the race on a TRICERATOPS. 2 laps in the pig and triceratops are losing so the wizard in the stands casts grease on the track slipping all the dinosaurs up. Now the triceratops is winning and the aasimar has a horrible feeling that she’s not going to make ANY money so she activated her wings and decides to ZOOM towards the triceratops and shoot a NON-LETHAL arrow into its leg. They roll...Nat 1 she shoots the arrow straight into the dinosaurs leg with the arrow coming out the other side. Ouch the aasimar now very smug gets her money and congratulates the barbarian meanwhile the rouge just starts trying to kill her. Basically the aasimar is badass and just crit the rouge twice with two shots to head so now the rouge is playing a halfling bard who just so happens to hate aasimar...
I've actually done one of these dinosaur races, and it went well until the end...I had won the race and gotten a hefty amount of gold (900 or so), and me, being an idiot, jumped off the T-Rex I had raced with and head-butted it...needless to say, it grabbed my forearm and throw me into a wall. But I survived and got to keep my gold, all well that ends well, I guess.
I have now made my first house rule: auto crit if you hit a enemy successfully in the nuts. [Or should i make it they automatically fall prone due HITTING THEM IN THE GROIN ]
My groups characters didnt agree with the dino races so we just stole a rex and left renamed the rex big honker and now we have a the best boi a party could have

I actually played tomb of annihilation and it was alright...the death curse wasn't fun. I participated in the unchained race where an npc rider's arm was torn off by its allasaur(spelling sucks). I came in third so it was fun, tomb of annihilation was fun its just the death curse was not.
