Keen to see what you get up to :) have been away for a month camping around NZ so can’t wait to chill catching up on your adventures from the comfort of my couch haha
So freakin cool! 💖💯 the full 30! Could write you a book about everything I want to comment on.😄. I love that Japan provides information on everything. The shelters become a treasure hunt for where you are in relation to the cone and ahahaha that the memorial stone says don't trust predictions 😅😂. The round lava rocks are a different sort of sea glass that remind me of the PNW, ocean power. Watching you wander through grassy, wooded areas I'm wondering if they have venomous snakes the way Miyajima does? I would've spent an entire day just taking photos of the roots, carvings, torii, even in the rain (find it super soothing). I think the only times I've seen that much rain were typhoon season in Kyoto and here in 2013. Excited for the next adventure. 💜✌🐦
Hi Norm, it seems the links to your 'Cinema Camera' and '90% of my Photography' aren't working anymore. Great video by the way (I miss Kagoshima and Sakurajima so much!)
I can’t decide what I like more, the behind the scenes or the documentaries themselves. They’re just so freaking good. The documentaries are always so evocative and the cinematography is 😘👌🏻 and you know I always find my faith in humanity again when I watch them. But… the behind the scenes man… so endearing and wonderful in their own right. I also appreciated the pink cars, the handling of the spider and that work ethic. Fantastic as always! 💖💖💖
20:45 Every country has their "crazy" cat lady! Although, I found her the most heartwarming and highly interesting since she feeds all the abandoned animals on the island. She reminded me of my own grandmother ;--;
I was so relieved when you said you couldn't understand his accent and it wasn't just me. I'm not very confident in my Japanese and sometimes elderly rural dialects can make me feel like I haven't learned anything at all.
Same for me! I lived in Japan for 15 years and have no problem using Japanese at work but his dialect was so strong that I have to rely on the English subtitle.
When I finally made it to Kagoshima in 2018, I arrived at night and was exhausted, so I got to my hotel room and had my requisite combini dinner before passing out, wondering when I would get a chance to finally see Sakurajima. Waking early to meet new friends, I left the room, stepped out, and looked to my right. There she was, in all her infinite splendor. I was nearly in tears. I was home for the first time in my life.
Whoa what a lot going on behind the scenes for this one! Not just with the weather but the abandoned location exploring, extra bits about the hunt for interviews, amazing shrines, and almost being evacuated. Wow. Thanks so much for sharing the extra behind the scenes from this trip!
Great bts Norm! Sakurajima seems like the most chill place. The abandonment, while sad, have definitely made it something special. Hope you can meet up with cat lady again!
Notification squad REPRESENT! I love the fact you post these after the documentary, gives a whole new insight on the process you do and the struggles you face my dude! Keep it up!
"These are rocks, they were once very hot.. maybe they were attractive, I don't know what they think of one another..." HAHA!! too funny! But tysm for always creating such insightful content! Always look forward to it. :) apart from the creepy hotel 😂
I made a day trip to Sakurajima with my family in February 2015. We rented a car and spent the day driving around the island, and got to see a couple of spectacular eruptions.
Loved both the documentary and this bts. It never ceases to amaze me how much history there is in each little place in Japan. And even within those places there's always an even deeper history buried beneath layers and layers of people's lives.
How people end up in these places is endlessly fascinating. Reminds me of what a woman who arrived at the tip of Cape Cod said when asked why she settled down in P’town: “Because it was the last stop on the bus”
That "I'm going to miss this place" seems to be a reoccurring thing for you to say Norm and i agree fully with you. It always seems that there is some kind of interesting thing to find in Japan. Of all the places I have gone to I always have some story to tell and beautiful photo to show. Patreon Crew 🤘
Yet another beautiful video. I am constantly amazed by the beauty and love you're able to feel through the people and scenery. You deserve so many more people to see your videos.
29:00 Norm speculating about the love life of rocks. You never know what you're going to find on Tokyo Lens! This was great. I'm glad the weather held out as long as it did and I'm amazed at how you can get people to talk to you. It's definitely a gift. Thanks for this additional footage. I love the editing, the music, basically everything. I do have one question, though. When do you sleep?!
Love your videos, Norm! I'm so thankful to have found you on RUclips. Thanks to You, Chris Broad, and Life Where I'm From I have a big Japan playlist to reference when I start planning my first trip 😀
I loved this whole behind the scenes look, but that opening/closing boot stomping slide guitar theme was just SO good. 10/10 on the music choice, 25/10 on the interviews everyone genuinely seemed so chill and awesome
Love the video, thanks for bring this adventure to us! Felt like I was exploring with you, there are so many intriguing elements of the countryside that drive my curiosity nuts XD. Peace. From London
Looking forward to more of this. Cheers Norm. It's always nice to watch a vid and say "I've been there! That place, right where Norm is standing... I've stood there." :)
I'm going to miss Sakurajima too! :) I loved this behind the scenes to last week's documentary, we get to see a bit of your process and how invested you get on your projects. Thanks for taking us with you! (btw, Norm, the music on this episode is SO GOOD)
The place is stunning and the locals are so nice. I guess the volcano, ash and constant thoughts of evacuation are a normal part of life - also I loved the music at the end [not the car alarms] 😆
Loving this combinations of super high quality documentaries, followed by more personal behind the scenes videos. I think it makes me feel more of a connection with the latter videos cause i watch them going "Oh i recognise that person/place".
This is fantastic! Another amazing doc! I was surprised that the first shelters you showed had little windows on the back side of them!?! Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?! And the random pyramid…my guess is that if lava, ash, or pyroclastic flow covers that area then it can be used to measure how deep it is by the size of the squares that are still sticking out. Also as a person who always has rocks in her pocket those are definitely attractive rocks.
I love this format of releasing the documentary and then releasing a behind the scenes/making of video. The documentaries are so emotional and captivating and makes me want to see how you make it and more of a realistic view of being in the area so I love that these videos exist
I have loved this series and am so glad you decided to do more documentary type videos. These are fantastic. Wanted to point out that the drone shot THROUGH the halls/window of the abandoned hotel literally made me gasp. BEAUTIFULLY shot!
Amazing how half of the locations looked like they are either from a post apocalyptic video game or straight up out of a Ghibli movie. As sappy as it might sound, you truly are an inspiration. I plan to make my way to Japan with a working holiday visa once the pandemic has calmed down enough and I will definitely explore the country, especially the countryside, in my free time. In fact, I was even thinking about filming it. In case you have any recommendations for an all-purpose camera for beginners, I am all ears since I haven't looked into cameras yet.
I absolutely love the documentary style videos you make and then that there's like a vlog style video afterwards! Lately I've been really interested in how these videos get made and its so impressive to see you juggling multiple cameras by yourself and getting shots even while driving!
Norm, your videos are sincerely some of my favorites to watch. Your footage is gorgeous & your storytelling is wonderful. And I definitely would check out this island...for a little bit. 😁
The tori gate that was berried under all that lava and ash had me so intrigued. This just really piqued my interest to the max! The area is also so beautiful! I'm going to watch the documentary after this! Were those sand baths in there?! ooohh the cats meow! those carved trees are so neat! I get sentimental with things like that as well! I would be so nervous getting on that ferry!
Great video. Always nice to see what goes into make of the videos as well as the videos themselves. It does seem to be quite a strange place with a mixture of semi-abandonment in some aspects and just people carrying on with their normal lives as well
I havent been this early in a while, feels good to be able to watch the video right when i get the notifications :D Loved it, having like a litte behind the scenes for that wonderful documentary! I think the rocks are very attractive for rock-standards
Love the vid! I've always loved the sound of rain, especially when it pours and you're inside. Only in the last few years I love to walk through the rain with an embrella. But hey, I'm not the one with pictures and interviews to shoot. I really need to have a drone aswell, the views are amazing!! Just keep on truckin'!
I’ve been listening to that guy with strong local accent, so many times since you uploaded last video, but I barely understood what he said even though I’m Japanese! 😂 Good job👏🏻
Thank you so much for your hard work! I can relate to you wanting to see everything! I hope you get good sleep these days so we can see more of your excellent content! Take care! :)
Thanks Norm, creating a piece of historical record no matter how small some of it may seem in today’s context may provide a clue for others in many years to come. I’ve be to Bali Indonesia several times over 15 years and tracking how places have changed has been interesting. I’m looking forward to the interviews.
When the behind the scenes video looks like a whole special video on its own. The music added to the sense of adventure. I always love a bit of urbex thrown into the mix. I especially loved that shot as you went through the building and out to the other side with the drone. But that last part about the not sexy rocks 😅
First, that spider on the microphone... "I'm not a fan." Secondly , that unexpected coffee break. I love it! Thank you for such engaging and all around wonderful content. ❤️🤘🏼✨
I love that you share your process along with the excellent doco. Seeing other creators process is always fascinating, not to mention its fun just to tag along on a trip especially while boarders are closed.
The more I learn about this island the more amazed I am by the people that still live on it, what an incredible group of people. Keep up the amazing content 😁 always love exploring Japan though you.
Hi mate. I asked my father-in- law about the pyramid near the shelter. Apparently there are a few on the island and they have a short poem about each season. I have drove passed it many a time on my way to fishing with my father-in-law and haven't thought about asking him about it until now. I spent 2 years living in Kagoshima city and hope to get back there soon once we can travel again. Thanks Norm, love your work fella.
I love seeing the behind the scenes of your videos and how you organize the process of video making. How do you have the energy to film such an in-depth video and vlog at the same time?! Amazing!
Brilliant again Norm and beautifully shot. Haven't watched it yet, but that's how consistent and good you've been with all your previous videos. I've more Faith in Norm than I do religion 😉
Edited to say: I just have to add: Norm, your dedication and exerted effort does not go unappreciated. You are truly a passionate creative and it really adds SO much to the quality of what you produce. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that what you do is absolutely appreciated and should be applauded! I personally love all of your videos, but this format is really my favorite because of the realness. 💜 Plus, the "cat lady" is my soul spirit kin. "All the elders be fishin'. *All of them.* " 😂💖 Also, stressed, "working with it" Norm is just 😗👌💖 level relatable. I will absolutely be adding Sakurajima to my list of places to go. 👍

❤️
This was epic! I can't wait til I can come to Japan one day to see it all myself! Thank you Norm for letting us live through your lens!
So freakin cool! 💖💯 the full 30! Could write you a book about everything I want to comment on.😄. I love that Japan provides information on everything. Hi Norm, it seems the links to your 'Cinema Camera' and '90% of my Photography' aren't working anymore. Great video by the way (I miss Kagoshima and Sakurajima so much!)
Next video: I spent a week INSIDE Japan's Most Active Volcano
I wonder where he's gonna get the Eva to shoot this!
Lol true. And yet. Also maybe not. Wouldn't that be a little dangerous.
@@liizzset The residents wouldn't say that, a helmet is all you'll need😅
Video after that: I spent a week UNDERNEATH Japan's Most Active Volcano
@@Munchprime haha good one, u got me
Norm after he meets anyone: "That was my favorite interview"
100%
Commander Sheppard: This is my favourite store at the citadel
The way you combine interesting places, people, story, and music, is inspiring. Thanks for taking us along.
yup, that is definitely a ferry ... Japan or not, they look pretty much the same anywhere.
I can’t decide what I like more, the behind the scenes or the documentaries themselves. They’re just so freaking good. 20:45 Every country has their "crazy" cat lady! Although, I found her the most heartwarming and highly interesting since she feeds all the abandoned animals on the island. She reminded me of my own grandmother ;--;
Yes she's very sweet to feed the animals and honestly it probably keeps them from getting into peoples trash bins
I hope you enjoy making these video's as much as I enjoy watching them, seriously thank you and keep up the great work!
I was so relieved when you said you couldn't understand his accent and it wasn't just me. I'm not very confident in my Japanese and sometimes elderly rural dialects can make me feel like I haven't learned anything at all.

Happy to have ya!!!
The last time I was this early Norm was renovating his room in his aparto!
Cheers from East Shinjuku!

Loved watching the full documentary but... I do love the calm vlog vibes
Super cool that the cat lady recognized you from TV! Such a neat little island, thanks for showing us more!
Suspicious pyramid, half-buried shrine, cat lady and hot rocks. Thank you for the great video Norm!
I made a day trip to Sakurajima with my family in February 2015. We rented a car and spent the day driving around the island, and got to see a couple of spectacular eruptions.

The return of cat lady!
She’s amazing~
She's amazing.
It's incredible how all these people are fascinating characters, so good.
I was surprised to hear her say she saw Norm on RUclips and tv before. I wonder if she saw him perform shamisen on tv.
How people end up in these places is endlessly fascinating. Reminds me of what a woman who arrived at the tip of Cape Cod said when asked why she settled down in P’town: “Because it was the last stop on the bus”

That was another very enjoyable video. Its 1.30 am in Australia and I could not sleep so your video was timely.

I'm grateful for people like you, that helps people like me to live adventures regardless of our situation. Thanks a bunch!
Dude! Your videos are completely in other level! I love it that dynamic.
What a nice follow to your previous video, awesome work as always!
The tori gate that was berried under all that lava and ash had me so intrigued. This just really piqued my interest to the max! The area is also so beautiful! I was hoping to see more from your weeklong trip. Thanks Norm!
Great video. Always nice to see what goes into make of the videos as well as the videos themselves. It does seem to be quite a strange place with a mixture of semi-abandonment in some aspects and just people carrying on with their normal lives as well
I'm so glad that I found your channel through the Abroad in Japan channel. Your work is inspiring and your dedication to your craft shows.
At around 24:10, the structure reminds me of depictions of Buddhist hell (sans people figures) I have seen in Thailand.
Lived in Kagoshima 18 years. First went across to Sakurajima in 93. Great to see it up close again. Great video!
I loved this kind of part 2! It went back and gave us an in depth look at the interesting stuff in part 1. Great work!!!!!! 👏
Just loved the video man
Probably more than the documentaries
I love this channel, glad I found it!
Nice vid to end my week with - thanks Norm!
Your behind the scenes videos are the perfect addition to your documentaries! 🥰
Life is crazy for me right now. Have to say I really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Don't think I didn't see that Datsun Fairlady Z! Gorgeous.
Take care! :)
This is truly amazing, love the way the locals respond to you. Very interesting information. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.
Yay. The perfect video to watch as I get dinner.
Thanks Norm, creating a piece of historical record no matter how small some of it may seem in today’s context may provide a clue for others in many years to come.
I’ve be to Bali Indonesia several times over 15 years and tracking how places have changed has been interesting. I’m looking forward to the interviews.
that place with the carved columns and the shrine in the heavy rain is such a mood.
As I always say, I love these types of videos so much!!
thank you for the video, what a learning experience, great work
When the behind the scenes video looks like a whole special video on its own. The music added to the sense of adventure. I always love a bit of urbex thrown into the mix. I especially loved that shot as you went through the building and out to the other side with the drone.
But that last part about the not sexy rocks 😅
Fantastic video as usual!
This reminds me of the couple of days I spent in Kagoshima but when I went it was incredibly hot, not rainy.
Thanks so much for these amazing contents. I enjoyed my stay in here.
First, that spider on the microphone... "I'm not a fan."
Secondly , that unexpected coffee break. I love it!
Thank you for such engaging and all around wonderful content. ❤️🤘🏼✨
I love that you share your process along with the excellent doco. Seeing other creators process is always fascinating, not to mention its fun just to tag along on a trip especially while boarders are closed.

Loving the longer videos!
Love the abandoned stuff and the drone footage
Very much appreciate that 2 second inclusion of the Fairlady Z. Norm is a man of discerning tastes.
Loved the series. Wonderfull documentary!!!!!!!! Thank you once again
Loving this, Definitely coming to Japan at some point bro. Your production style is on another level🙌🏽
Journey across japan and Tokyo Lens this season is 👏✨
Your work is always amazing. I love your choice in music and your skills with the drone footage! The interviews are amazing too!!
It's always interesting seeing behind the scenes!
This was really amazing! You always make us feel like we're there with you ♥
A Truly outstanding Channel and Excellent episode!
I love seeing the behind the scenes of your videos and how you organize the process of video making. How do you have the energy to film such an in-depth video and vlog at the same time?! Amazing!
Also needed to add that your comment about rocks at the end made me laugh harder than any rock comment should’ve 😂
Love the behind the scenes perspective!
Brilliant again Norm and beautifully shot. Haven't watched it yet, but that's how consistent and good you've been with all your previous videos. I've more Faith in Norm than I do religion 😉

I will absolutely be adding Sakurajima to my list of places to go. 👍
