    In the Aztec Empire, gold was so plentiful in the areas they lived that it was practically worthless to them.

    • @alexiacaceda1421

      same thing in the incan empire, gold was used in religous ceremonies and it didn't really have value because there was gold litteraly everywhere

    • @saiyasha848
      @saiyasha848 2 года назад +32

      It was often used for ritual purposes, because it was easy to mold, which also means, it can't be used for much else but Jewelry and Coins. You can't make weapons out of it or Armor. It is nice and shiny and non corrosive, so it could be thrown into lakes for instance for the cornoation of "El hombre Dorado" the leader of a specific tribe. The problem is, when the spaniard came _they_ thought "Well, Gold is valuable where _I_ come from, so it must be valuable everywhere, ergo, if these people have enough gold to make earings and children tos out of it, there must be so much _more_ gold stashed away somewhere!"
      This is kind of how the legend of "El Dorado got started. Even when they did find gold it was never _enough_ gold, because the idea was that the stash would so massive as to overshadow _everything_

    • @iminumst7827
      @iminumst7827 2 года назад +12

      @@saiyasha848 "non corrosive" The resilience of gold was why it was able to retain it's use as a primary storage of value for so long. Unlike something like crystals, gold is not a structure but instead a pure element. A lot of elements in their pure form are very reactive. Metals like alkaline metals in pure form will literally explode if they touch water. But gold is remarkably nonreactive, not being corrosive, prone to oxidation, or any other typical chemical processes. It's non toxic, uniquely colored, and shiny. Being resilient is important because a storage of value is meant to stay the same as long as possible. It being unique in color and heavy in weight also meant it was hard to fake. The only metal that can even compete with gold as a store of value is platnum.
      People say gold didn't have much of a practical use, but the truth is gold was incredibly practical in a developed financial system as a store of value. So it really WAS valuable everywhere they went. The native americans simply haven't developed that far economically and were still bartering so they simply didn't unlock the true value of gold yet. But when the Europeans invaded gold was immediately valuable because they brought their economic culture with them. That's why the gold rush was such a big deal, it's not like the Europeans came over and went "oh, gold isn't valuable here, guess it's not worth much." Sort of like how crude oil wasn't valuable until the engine.
      Now that the world is moving off the "gold standard", the best store of value currently is land. If you want to make sure your wealth isn't lost in inflation, taxes, and so on, investing in property is a very sensible option. Unfortunately unlike gold, property is firstly a bit inaccessible as an investment for a person of average wealth and secondly property rights bets on the current government not collapsing which would take the property rights down with it. This is why people who don't trust our government will still invest in gold to this day. You might think crude oil is a good investment too, but it's really not because unlike gold it's unpleasant to store it in your living area so you already need to be a property investor to become a crude oil hoarder. And that's also betting that oil retains it's value as electric engines continue to advance, which doesn't seem like a great bet.
      "there must be so much more gold stashed away somewhere!"
      I think the literal myth of El Dorado was because the natives kept referring to the "golden one" which was a famous rich person who covered themselves in gold, and wasn't actually a place. But due to a language barrier and misinformation the Spaniards thought the "golden one" may be a city of gold.

    When the Spanish conquistadors invaded, in some cases, the natives thought they were gods because of their use of metal to form weapons. The Spanish ended up creating mass genocide when the natives did not convert to Christianity, which is hinted at when Miguel and Tulio stowaway on the ship to South America.
    The ball game they play can be seen throughout ancient Aztec and Incan civilizations. The loser gets sacrificed by the gods in cenotes, which are caverns that become flooded after years. People nowadays swim in them.

This game was supposed to help the sun to stay in movement (the sun being represented by the ball)

      @luzelenaserrano1236 2 года назад +46

      Hi, Mexican daughter of a historian here (specialist in mezoamerican cultures), just a few corrections!
      1. Yes, there were cases of native cultures confusing the Spanish with gods. I'd just add that it was also because of their use of tamed horses and the color of their skin.
      2. The genocide was before the efforts of conversion. The first step was to conquer in a military sense, take control of the population, and that was when they killed everyone that tried to stand up to them/soldiers/leaders/priests/etc. The next step was colonizing, AKA conquering in a cultural sense. It was only after the fighting ended that Spanish monks started the effort to convert the population as a way of "educating" them. They were very successful. The population of Mexico (especially those who live in secluded towns) is very catholic.
      3. Yes, the ball game was very popular throughout civilizations. The term I'd use for the civilizations tho would be "mezoamerican", meaning those from the center of the American continent. This includes cultures such as the Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, etc. (I'm not sure about the Incans having ball game, it's a south American culture so I don't know anything about it.)
      4. Cenotes are only found in southeast Mexico (and a bit of the surrounding area, the Yucatan peninsula and south of it in general). So neither the Aztec or the Incan civilizations had access to them.
      5. We have no record of cenotes being used for sacrifice. The remains found in them come from tombs or accidental drownings.
      6. Neither the losers or the winners of the ball game were sacrificed anywhere, they were highly specialized players tasked with performing a ritual game to honor the gods. What we do have record of, however, is the sacrifice of the player's slaves. This depends on the civilizations, but in cultures that went to war, they brought back captives and kept them as slaves (the higher the status the better).
      7. Cenotes aren't formed by the flooding of pre-existing caves. The ground of the Yucatan peninsula is all limestone, a very porous stone. What happens is that the whole underground of the peninsula is constantly flooded, ever since it rose up from the sea. We have underground canals which, through erosion, have developed into caves. When the cave gets big enough, it receives the name cenote. They then start to erode the ceiling too and sometimes they become completely open to the sky (that's how people swim in them). This same reason is why there aren't any rivers in the peninsula, the ground absorbs them, they're all underground!
      (That was a lot lol)

    The whole "forget Miguel" part made me really upset; Miguel showed attraction to Chel first, and Tulio detered him because she was a co-conspirator and ended up being with her instead. It reminds me of what Dreamworks did in Sinbad. It really hurts to watch (though it did hurt more in Sinbad). And the fact that Chel was cool with kicking him out of the equation was pretty cold.

    • @paige8453
      @paige8453 5 месяцев назад

      I think that part was completly misunderstood. Even as a child, it sounded like he was adding on Miguel to make it sound less weird or romancy when he asked Chell to go with them and then decided "You know what. Forget Miguel" as in "I want you to come with us" not forget Miguel as in forget him forget him. I hope that was understandable.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer 5 месяцев назад

      @@paige8453 That's a severe writing issue. Miguel and Tulio never even discuss it; Miguel just stays mad and plans to stay in El Dorado while Tulio and Chel leave, so it does feel like Tulio meant "leave Miguel behind" and just felt too guilty to lie or make excuses.

  • @NummyNuttyNumNuts

    Ah my favorite (problematic) DreamWorks film!
    From the development team, Chief never believed that Tulio and Miguel were Gods (and arguably neither did the citizens- hence the "smile, like you mean it" comment). It was mainly about there being a power play between the Chief and Tzelkel-Kan.
    And at one point, it was gonna be revealed that the armadillo was the actual God but they scrapped that towards the end. The volcano scene is the only reference to that plot bit.

Then the volcano starts erupting when they panicked just to stop when he yelled stop. It's possible they might not know that they are avatars. Obviously this is open to interpretation as it could just be a bunch of coincidences. Though them being gods makes sense.

    Chief knows Miguel isn't a real god. But he knows that his people believe Miguel is a real god, and that because of that he removed a lot of the crazy psycho high priests power and influence and that because of that and because he enjoys spending time with the regular people, Miguel has made the people of El Dorado happy. He also can tell that among man, MANY other things, Miguel is a good man. So that's why he's letting him stay even if it's under a lie.
    It should be easy enough to explain why he's getting older even if he's a god (had he ended up staying), they'd just say that to put the people at ease, he was giving himself the appearance of a mortal man and so would age and change like them until he was ready to return to the other world in his actual godly form.

    This and Sinbad show superior voice acting and flowing 2D animation compared to other works by DreamWorks. ♥️

    Miguel should have stayed. It would have been better that way cause people have this false idea that once your friends it’ll stay that way forever but it’s unrealistic. We have different goals and sometimes life takes you in different directions and that’s normal, it’s ok cause it means your growing and if anything you should be happy for that friend and not stop them from pursuing their personal growth. It is a kids movie so I get why they didn’t want them to depart but they needed to go their separate ways so they could grow.

    There is a theory that the armadillo is an actual god and the volcano was actually because the armadillo was excited with the butterfly and the armadillo calmed down when Tulio yelled stop

    1:21 Well I mean Disney has been doing 3d-2d animation since Great Mouse Detective. So It could be a mixture. No there are some mixtures of 3d In there. 1:24 Same. Kevin Kline Voices Tulio(The One with the black hair) Who voiced Phoebus in Disney’s Hunchback, This movie is by Dreamworks. 4:38 PHIL!❤

    I, too, scream-sing whenever I see this movie or clips from it. :D And yes, it is an example of Dreamworks "tra-digital" animation from the early 2000s (blend of 2D and CGI).

    The citizens of el Dorado thought Miguel & Tulio were gods because of the horse! Horses died out in the Americans a few thousand years ago. But the gods you see creating the Americas/el Dorado at the beginning of the movie are riding a horse-like creature.
    So Miguel & Tulio ride up on an animal that looks similar to the one their gods ride (an animal they've never seen before) and they think their gods have come

    When you hear about animated movie soundtracks everyone brings up Tarzan with Phil Collins, but Sir Elton killed this soundtrack. Just as good if not better than Tarzan's.
