I'm a moderate-level Blender user - very advanced in some ways and total rookie in others - and I've tried many tutorials to varying degrees of success, but these past two videos were so helpful in cementing down a sub-d/shrink wrap workflow + a comprehensive material guide that doesn't require further handholding that I'm subbing to the Patreon. Don't even know what's on there. Not sure that I care. Just extremely thankful for these tuts. I feel liberated in Blender and all the technical limitations are out of the way. It's just me and my creativity now. Derrk is goated.
So this is single-handedly, the most helpful texture tutorial I have ever seen on RUclips. I’ve been doing blender for a little over a year now and always struggled with textures. Because of this, I have purchased a lot of different texture packs that are really good but this makes me feel like I wasted my money. I didn’t realize texturing can be so simple. No one else on RUclips explained it this well
THANK YOU man... l literally feel tears right now. This two part series is probably the best of its kind and you are bringing to us for free. I feel gratitude - thank you.
01:04:48 it's not entirely unrealistic when you consider UV light, which when bounces off a certain materials turns into visible light (fluorescence) thus "reflects" more (visible) light than what hit it. Think of white shirt under UV light at a club, it literally glows. In many detergents there are ingredients which play on that fact and make white clothes look even more "white". So I would not be surprised if there was a plasticky neon-green resin in a shoe with this property just to look cool.
Boosting colour is my favourite tip :) great tut, THX. I think you can mix the colour already in colour ramp ( 01:39:33 ) - no need to output it to factor and change colours there, this way you can incorporate third or fourth colour on the ramp. Instead of sheen on the fabric I use layer weight or fresnel node (mix it with base color) and add lighter value on the outer rim - this way I can control the fuzziness of the fabric :)
I honestly stopped learning blender cuz I'm lazy but can't stop watching your video cuz your hilarious 🤣 keep up the awesome work man you always cheer me up on a bad day
Pretty sure procedural materials are lighter on your computer as it doesn't have to keep unwrapping the larger images used for the texture, plus procedural materials are easily transferred to a different computer due to it not losing links to images! Still a Blender beginner so I might be wrong...
Hey man, awesome tutorial , thanks again! I was wondering if you could direct me on how you did the extra stitching. I tried a few ways but they didnt work. Thanks
i really like your video well explained and all but keept the walking clip out it distract the whole tutorial and makes it boring. Also you sometimes talk too much like Price
This is such a great tutorial, really explained the principle shader so well. I would like to know how to better make that canvass looking material you have in the main thumbnail. How you managed to get the grooves of the canvess to hug the shows shape appropriately? Are u using the material texture(mentioned mid way), but applied using the uvs with the extra seams shown at end?
hmm not positive which part you are talking about but yes to get it wrapping properly you should UV unwrap it like I have done. The next video will cover the same material in a slightly different way which may be helpful.
It is often very boring to watch lessons on youtube, but yours is like freash breath of air. Very useful stuff without bullshit. You have unique style of telling that hold me up until the end of the video. I'm not beginner in blender, but your even basic things are interesting to watch again. Keep going!
Luxurious tutorial and great understanding of nodes. Needless to say, I always puzzled over how to make nice textures. Thanks for this lesson and the others you do. I admire your work.
The only thing blender lacks (beside light linking which is in the work), is a batch render system that allows for hardcore customization and combination of different settings into many renderings. Lets say I need 3 different views of the shoe, with 10 different material settings, with 3 different light setups. With MODO I can do all of this with a couple clicks and obtain my 90 renderings out of vray standalone.. And I need to do lots of this stuff for work, so blender is still out of my needs sadly.
Hmmm yes there could probably be better tools for this. I typically would do something like using a lot of key frames to swap things around. Did materials a similar way in the color changing one I posted (still header on my website if you haven't seen)... I don't usually have to render 70 things though (used to!)
43:24 , if anyone is facing no bumps showing in cycles like that in your latest blender version then just go to the render settings and just untick the open shading language present just below the gpu /cpu option
Dude i just love you! Love your style - way of teaching - voice - everything! Thanks a lot for your efforts!
Thanks Farhad
You said it best...

I think Derek is THE ONLY guy who knows how to teach a pro method in blender

I m finding this part quite difficult
... I mean the last part was very complex... What should i do
Which part? What's up?
Hey Deked, awesome tutorials. Question, which materials are more computer intensive. Image texture or procedural materials?
Pretty sure procedural materials are lighter on your computer as it doesn't have to keep unwrapping the larger images used for the texture, plus procedural materials are easily transferred to a different computer due to it not losing links to images! Still a Blender beginner so I might be wrong...
man you're just the perfect human i love u

Omg ITS FINALY OUT!

I always accomplish this with multiple cameras set to one frame each and then render the animation. The material changes would be tougher though.
Hmmm yes there could probably be better tools for this. I typically would do something like using a lot of key frames to swap things around. Did materials a similar way in the color changing one I posted (still header on my website if you haven't seen)... I don't usually have to render 70 things though (used to!)
