It's not hard for me to believe that Janet Dubois was Cab Calloway's daughter. She does favor him and his other daughters. I agree, too, that JJ was the humor on the show and JJ was smart, but in a different way than Thelma and Michael. He was street smart and he ended up getting the family out of the projects. Jimmie Walker blamed John Amos for the show's cancelation because the father was so important to the show and, suddenly, he was gone.
Jimmie Walker should have understood why John Amos left the show! He felt that JJs character was too full of STUPID BUFFOONERY and, he voiced his opinion and, he was given a choice...he chose to leave....he stood on principle...it wasn't about the money!
Actually it was the producers who fired John Amos over the phone and killed his character off so that there was no possible way for him to return. The producers didn’t want a Father on the show in the first place(and they wanted JJ to be a thief) but Esther Rolle was not going to do the show as a single Mother with a criminal for a Son making James Evans the first Black live in Father/Husband in tv history, so really it was the producers that hurt the show… and JJ did not get his family out of the projects with his ‘ebony genius’ it was actually Keiths football contract that moved them, which is another travesty
@@evnstvn58 Exactly, they didn’t want the family to have a strong male role model in the home in the first place so when Jimmie Walker became the breakout star, they loved it… in fact when Norman Lear told John Amos he was being fired, he kind’ve joked about it but when Lear told Jean Stapleton (who left her show and didn’t seem to be very moved) how Edith Bunker was going to die, he actually cried smh no respect for the strong Black Father
I hated that they killed off James, I once read that they originally wanted him to walk out on the family, but killing him off would eliminate any chance of him coming back, which I'm glad he didn't walk out, as James would never have done that. With Esther coming back, she agreed to on the condition that she came back without her husband, as she felt Carl wasn't right for Florida. Thank you for this. Everyone in the good times group I shared the link to the first episode were asking when the 2nd one would drop. They are going to be happy
Hey there, actually what happened with Florida on the show is she got married to Carl ( played by Moses Gun) and they moved to Arizona because the weather was better for Carl's health He had cancer. But then the way they did his character, they bought Florida back for Thelma's wedding and she returned to the show and they didn't say anything about Carl at all after that.
Hi from Houston Texas. I truly commend you for this one. Believe it or not, I still watch Good Times every weekday religiously. I'm 49 and I still loooove watching them. Thank you so much for your awesome 👌 content ❤
Great video......1932 would likely be the correct year of birth for Janet Dubois because her son passed away in 1987 at the age of 36 so he would be like 70 years old if he were still living today . Also her death certificate confirms her year of birth as 1932 as well..... She was married at age 18 in 1950 and started having children right after so all her children are close in age. I know two of her children are still living , a daughter and a son ) both who did some small appearances in television/film back in the 1970`s. We definitely know she could not have been 74 years old at the time of her death when she has children close to that age. It has been said she lied about her age to keep getting work . She was certainly a lovely and talented actress along with the great Esther Rolle .
Esther Rolle and James played an awesome married couple, and they stood strong in unison when it came to fighting for their rights as actors and as black people. which opened the doors for a lot of the new shows that came out afterwards. So much respect to them. I always admire them. Oh yeah, not only was Esther a wonderful actress, but she was an honorary member of The Zeta Phi Kappa.
Wow that was wonderful. Final some one filled in the blanks for me about the Show behind the scenes. Esther Roll for being such an inspiration for women especially black woman. She seemed kind, loving and all about power to the people and the right things in life. ✊🏽🙌🏾❤🖤

Omg this is so eye opening. They wanted Thelma to be s3xually active at a young age and to remove the father from the household. Fast forward, this is what happened in high numbers during the 1980's with help of the cr@ck epidemic.
Remember the episode when Florida found the dissertation Sexual Behavior In The Ghetto? I love when James told Thelma what you doing with this filthy piece of trash.
Good Morning John was fired and Esther quit the following year. When the producers asked her to return, she said she would on certain conditions-She wanted JJ's character to be more mature and responsible and she didn't Carl's character to return due to the fact that she didn't like how they made her character a spiritual lady linking up with an atheist so quickly after the death of her husband. Many fans stopped watching the show after John and Ester left. I was a kid when the show came on so I didn't watch much of it until later in my teen years and I didn't click with JJ's character.
I really enjoyed both Good Times videos. Ester Rolle and John Amos were right about Jimmy Walker’s antics. He did seem minstrel-ish on the show after season 1. He could have been funny without going so far. In fact, I remember a race documentary in the 80s that compared his character to black minstrel performers. Pictures of the minstrel dancing were compared to JJ’s dancing and jumping around and sure enough, he had the same moves. I used to have a love/hate relationship with the show because his overall silliness cheapened an otherwise good series. However, I am glad that JJ was also shown as a talented, caring and protective male figure.

(Just looking outta the window).... opening song credits! They never made it outta the ghetto...Norman Lear stole the ideas of Good Times! He's making millions from reruns!
More fun facts: Jimmie Walker's character was based on Ed Norton's character from the Honeymooners. Chip Fields auditioned for the role of Thelma. The James Evans character was based on Eric Monte's stepfather. Good Times was 1st pitched in 1971. Laurence Fishburne auditioned for the role of Michael.
Yep also the actress Tamu auditioned for the role of Thelma as well. Tamu was the daughter who got pregnant in the movie Claudine, also she was on a episode of GT with Shirley from What's Happenin'. The episode where they won that lottery money, she & Shirley tried to rob 'em of the cash.
Omg another epic episode. Perhaps a part 3. I was looking for you to mention Adam Wade. Then you can't forget Raymond Allen, Moses Gunn & the impeccable Robert Guillaume just to name a few.
My Dad could never watch this show. He lived in Chicago and I never understood why because I loved watching the reruns back to back. My Mom told me it was because he saw it as depressing. Now that I'm an adult, I can so see it. Esther Rolle was so beautiful! She really made the show and without her I couldn't watch it.
Great review. Good Times is my all time favorite sitcom. Is there going to be a part 3 that tells the story of the Late Raymond Allen (Ned The Wino), Albert Reed (Alderman Davis), Richard Ward (Henry "Grandpa" Evans) and Marilyn Coleman (Mrs. Bookman) ? Please do stories on some of The Late actresses such as Isabel Sanford, Roxy Roxer, Zara Cully, Tamara Dobson, Rosalind Cash, Della Reese, Cicely Tyson, Carol Speed, Lynne Thigpen, Mabel King, Shirley Hemphill, Charlotte Rae, Yvette Wilson, Natalie Desselle Reed, Rosetta Lenoire, Naya Rivera , Diane Carroll & Ruby Dee.
They wanted to show a negative image to society of black men as fathers which would impact black culture and communities for years to come. This is an example of how society has viewed the black family. They wanted to breakdown the black family.
I agree with John Amos in regards to how the show was making a buffonery of Jjs character. I also feel like Jimmie Walker felt he was bigger than every cast member. They all shined every week, but the shows creator didn't want to take the focus away from Jj, not even a little bit, which caused tension amongst the cast. I also agree with James and the way he approached Jimmie Walker about Bernadette Stanis posing for playboy. If that is what she wanted to do, then she could have gone that route. Jimmie thinks he is doing her a favor, but it came off a little creepy to me. Esther was a true woman of her words, and she didn't let anyone push her around for the sake of a dollar. So, of course, she wanted to show that there were husbands and wives living together under one roof there children. Mabel King from Whats happening did the exact same thing she wanted more screen time, and she also wanted a love interest but the creators opposed and eventually fired her for wanting more, and why shouldn't she? She was the matriarch of the family raising two teenagers and there was definitely room for her character to grow but there is and was this stigma for black households to have a single parent raising children and it just wasn't so. Why shouldn't we be portrayed as a two family household and show the world some positivity in it versus what we were presented? I don't know. I feel Jimmie Walker was funny initially, but after a while, it wasn't even funny anymore to me. So, it's a shame the show saw fit to fire James because he stood up, and eventually Esther left because she didn't like what happened to James, but she did come back. I'm not saying the show wasn't great, but how they did that cast and Jimmie Walker was not all that he appears to be. I listen to him, and it's like he didn't care for anyone other than himself. That's my opinion.
Nice video. It is kind of funny how Jimmy and John didn’t speak to each other away from the show, but yet, they seem to work together really well in the movie let’s do it again with Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier 🤷🏾♂️

I didn't know she was one of the founders of PAN AF Film festival! We go every year! ✊🏽
Do Lou Rawls Story dying of music
More fun facts: Jimmie Walker's character was based on Ed Norton's character from the Honeymooners. Chip Fields auditioned for the role of Thelma. The James Evans character was based on Eric Monte's stepfather. Good Times was 1st pitched in 1971. Laurence Fishburne auditioned for the role of Michael.
Yep also the actress Tamu auditioned for the role of Thelma as well. Tamu was the daughter who got pregnant in the movie Claudine, also she was on a episode of GT with Shirley from What's Happenin'. The episode where they won that lottery money, she & Shirley tried to rob 'em of the cash.
wow didn't know that!
Barney Rubble from The Flintstones was also based on Ed Norton from The Honeymooners!!
Dude , I love your style of storytelling! It seems like more of a conversation. I hope you reach your goals 😎 Bro!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Omg another epic episode. Perhaps a part 3. I was looking for you to mention Adam Wade. Then you can't forget Raymond Allen, Moses Gunn & the impeccable Robert Guillaume just to name a few.
Ester Rolle was also on Down in the delta movie.
Oh wow I just said I can't wait for Part two. Look at GOD 🙏🏽🤎
Esther rolled used to play on the movie of down in the Delta
True. That was the lost movie she appeared in and she died before it was released.
I thought the last movies she was in was Rosewood and Beloved. I could be wrong.
Wow 👀 you learn something new everyday. RIP 💔 to the cast members who are no longer here.
You know who you should do Frank mattews his story is interesting or assata shakur
Do Little Richard Story Dying of Music
One appearance Esther Rolle also made was in the movie CLEOPATRA JONES!
Esther rolle was in the movie, driving Miss Daisy. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Esther Rolle is an example of a person from non FBA lineage who was a rider R.I.P!
I have met three of the cast members from 'Goodtimes'. John Amos, Helen Martin and Lou Gossett, Jr.
I remember that soap opera that she was in called Love of Life, I was 10 years old, love your videos
So do i. Matter of fact Damon Evans (the second Lionel on The Jeffersons) was on that show as well
Great review.
Now ask yourself, why did Norman Lear and the other producers fight so hard against Esther having a black father in the home🤔?
They weren't ready for it.
I've been binge watching for the last 4 days
This is very well researched. Excellent video!!!
I love this and thank you for sharing this with us!😊
Nice video. It is kind of funny how Jimmy and John didn’t speak to each other away from the show, but yet, they seem to work together really well in the movie let’s do it again with Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier 🤷🏾♂️
I don't think they had any scenes together in that movie
@@cdgates1 it’s not like they were never ever around each other during filming. Let’s use some common sense here
Nobody ever mentions Kim Feilds/Tootie mom was Janet Jacksons mom on Good Times.
Chip Fields
@@sirjer73 She also was in Living Single as Regine's mom!! That wasn't a surprise because of Kim Fields being her actual daughter.
Keep up the amazing work my brother 💢💯💢💯🧠💯🧠📢💯🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🧠📢
I loved Good Times! I was a teenager in the 70,s. Watched every episode. Wished I could have lived with that family even thou I am white! A real wholesome African American show! R.I.P. Esther Rolles!❤
Just finished good times on peacock. Amazing video to finish a legendary show for me
You know this was a good episode but speaking of Jimmy Walker I was reading normally as book and he was saying that Ja'net was pretty much very close to him especially when he felt that his character was pretty much a caricature
