Welcome back! In this episode of my ongoing MGSV Tapes Investigation, I cover the 6th Tape from METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES, 'Chico's Distress Call'. It's a more lore-heavy entry this time around, with some speculation as to Skull Face's end game, some surprising quotations slipped in by SF, and more!
    Here's a transcript:
    Chico's Tape 6 - March 14-15, 1975: Chico's Distress Call
Note: Portions of this tape were also included in the Ground Zeroes ending, both immediately prior to the credits and during the post-credits conversation.
Chico: Snake, it's Chico. I need your help. Cipher's holding me on a U.S. military base in Cuba. Paz is here too. We're at the prison area at the coast. There are some cages to the east of a big building. It's an old, grassy facility. That's where we are. Help me, Snake...
    Paz: Don't... Don't do it...
Skull Face: Kid's a natural, don't you think? What do you think Big Boss will do? He'll know it's a trap, but he'll come anyway. That's the kind of man he is.
    Paz: Don't.
Skull Face: Thanks to your report a nuclear inspection team's being sent to their base. The scientist was our way in. It all ends soon, exactly as I've planned. All thanks to you.
    Paz: Cipher... would never...
Skull Face: Yes, Cipher will surely mourn his death. I'll have no choice but to distance myself from the group. And then they'll eliminate you. No one will be left. Think about that. Big Boss or Cipher - you can only save one.
    Paz: I will never talk.
Skull Face: I don't expect you to believe me. The question is, which of the two would you like to give a shot at survival?
Paz: What I would like... is to kill you.
Skull Face: The feeling is mutual. But... We're secret agents. Restraint is a virtue.
Skull Face: Your favorite song. Nicola. Bart. Immigrants, wrongly executed. But their deaths served as a message to others. That ours is a society that murders the innocent. Do you, too, believe your sacrifice will change the world? If so, the time is now. Cipher's been in hiding ever since his grand experiment. No one's seen him in years. All we hear are orders delivered by proxy. Except you. You met with him - face to face - in order to contact Big Boss. Tell me where he is. Where is Cipher... Where is Zero? I've never known choice. Where I was born, the language I speak... I've never had the freedom to choose for myself. But you, right now, are free. Do as you will.
Paz: This will save Big Boss?
    Skull Face: It may.
Paz: Will you really kill Zero for me?
    Skull Face: Not for you.
    Paz: Alright... Zero is...

I thought it interesting that the manhattan safehouse took Zero 10 years to replace the inhabitants with Cipher personnel...since Paz visited him there as early as 1974, this means he started this process in 1964, around the time of operation Snake Eater. This strongly hints that Zero was already planning something way before he even got his hands on the legacy and probably before even FOX was established. The existence of XOF also establishes him as being a mastermind and strategist before the events of MGS3, as does his raising of Paz, of which she was reportedly one of many. This guy likely intended to take on the current world order long before The Boss's sacrifice

@0:53 -something i just noticed, i dont know if it comes up later in the video, skull face says: "kid's a natural don't you think ?" (talking about resisting torture i assume in the context)
venom snake gives this exact line talking about *spoilers xd* one of the children you rescue from the diamond mine in TPP mission 18 blood runs deep , to kaz when you arrive back at MB. i only noticed because i played that mission just the other day, i wonder how many other subconcious repetitions etc could be picked up on in MGSV 0.o its really a disturbing game possibly the most evoking game ever (certainly that i have played)
btw i love this content :') although i did have bad dreams falling asleep to this playlist lol

Excellent Boss. I’ve been playing MGO and it’s become clear how much of the MGSV storyline MGO was meant to be. I believe the three red bars in the title refer to the I Ching & Heaven ... meaning MGO is a digital Valhalla for Diamond Dogs. This is Grey Fox’s & Raiden’s simulator after all. Anyway if you’d ever played MGO & had any thought on it being connected more closely to the MGS mytho it would make a nice chapter for you.

@@FuturasoundProductions You know that's what I thought was so interesting 🤔 even back then when Kojima promised camp omega in MGSV:TPP ans told people to go back there
And having it only come back in a sense of fragments (like memory fragments) in MGO multiplayer
I've been following your work for a very long time and watched a lot of your videos/essays fully but never commented just giving likes on my alt account
But I had to stop and say thank you for your good work with heart, passionate and spirit here with seeing it all and making the time to share it all its others as many things you covered especially when it comes to mgsV was something I always had in my subconscious or found out myself but then have it be expertly explained or see details I forgotten or over looked
      Your work is marvelous
And I as well own MGSV on PS4 and PC
Do indeed reach out and contact me as I go by the same username on both platforms as here on RUclips
I 100% mgs:tpp on PS4 but wouldn't mind going back or going further be it there or starting more so on PC as I play on PC for sp but would love to go into MP and share thoughts as there has been connections I've made with MGO and a possible hidden story/interpretations left to explore.
(Sorry if this is a long message but that's just my nature and hopefully anyone reading can go back for themselves explore or re-explore the games with a new light)

I’ll DM you tho for sure & we can set up a time. As far as that Heaven I Ching if this is where fictional combat characters go to die it’s been pretty glorious. The fact that the server doesn’t have that much longer online (outside the normal 5yr support I’d assume) the matches and players have taken on this already legendary content to me bc MGO is so much of the essence of the MGS mythos. I’ve never played online games w others before, it’s been a really great community to participate in.

I feel that the reason there are two separate recordings of the same speech made by skull face to Paz is because one is a rehearsal. I feel like all the people connected to Metal Gear V are all actors in a way. Pretending to be people they are not. It's the reason in my opinion why it is so dramatic almost like watching a dramatization. They themselves have agency and are genuine people but they are shadows of the "real" players such as Big Boss and Zero. Therefore it is natural for someone playing the part of someone they are not to need to rehearse lines as means to an end. Also poetically being the end to the series. That is my personal take anyways.

It’s such a shame these tapes couldn’t be acted out in the tradition of long cinematic cutscenes. It almost makes me think MGSV would have made a better audiobook or radio play than a videogame.

I don't think BB was going after Chico only to save his ass. I do think he had genuinely wanted to protect Chico. I think he even wanted to protect Paz as well, if only to determine her true loyalty. Kaz, on the other hand, couldn't give two shits about either of them.

MGSV is one of those rare games that touches on the Japanese affinity for wordplay. Meaning their language has many words with multiple meanings. Their poetry is loaded with puns and entendres. I've often wondered how much I miss out on in translation from Japanese to English in stories. Skullfaces' treacherous language is just custom built for this sort of story. It's really good writing.

Daniel Fitzpatrick thanks! It could be, and I’ll admit it makes more sense as a ‘grand experiment’. But SF specifically says ‘in years’. According to Ocelot, the Patriots project didn’t begin dev until late 74, which means at the earliest, only months prior to GZ. You may have just stumbled onto the possibility that Les Enfants Terribles is somehow part of The Patriots project, though!

I think their is something too how everyone who sees you in gz acts like your their abuser. Paz says something like hit me more or something and chico freaks out. Venoms got some serious DID Manchurian candidate stituation going on. I would love to see an answer to wtf is going on in this game. Kojima said in the mgs movie interview we the fans would have a delayed appreciation for this game like mgs2. I think that means their is an answer. the south African bush wars were about decolonisation and communist insurgent guerillas not race and the current farm murders are a race based war. other than that you did a good analysis this is a problem of all of kojima work on wars its a superficial surface level understanding followed by commiewoods political spin. but he made good stealth games.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen

I’m sorry I’m going to have to strongly disagree about the research done for those games. While there might be an error once and a while, the amount of painstaking research that kojima and his team does in order to put into the background history of these games is immense.
You can clearly see all the work done in tapes and codec conversation that the research form about the real life history is massive.
The reason for why it seems “surface” level is because it’s just the background drop for the main story. Not the main story. The team is going to have to rewrite history for the sake of the story like how assassin’s creed games (another team that does a lot of research work to get things done) .
I’m just making this put just to give credit to the hardworking team that does a lot of research to get things write for the sake of the game’s lore, history and story.
