I'm really kind of surprised that Hingis wound up with "only" five Slam singles titles. In 1997 she was super dominant but even just a year later things began to change. She would never reach another Wimbledon final and blew her chance at a French Open final in 1999. And it was painful to see her lose that aussie open title in 2002.
i would argue that none of these are crazy good wins. Serena was basically a 17 yr old with litte experience ( Pascual was 25) . Hingis was solidly in "burnout " phase by this time and this was Pierce's weakest surface only getting to 1 quarterfinal prior to 2005. Maybe Hingis but it had been 4 years since she won the tournament.
@C o I absolutely agree. As an avid tennis watcher during that time, Hingis' performance definitely declined after the 2001 AO. Her results were not where they were in 97-00. Power hitters such as the William sisters, Davenport, Capriati, Henin, and Clijsters either emerged or were emerging to nudge her out of the top spot. In simpler words, I just think she was burned out at this point.
Yea, Martina had tendonitis in her low back IIRC. Maybe related to the damage her feet her taking? Still, a great win for VRP, underrated player for sure.
6:40. It is interesting to compare Ruano-Pascual’s slice, which was not bad, to Graf’s - Graf’s was so much quicker, almost the pace and depth of a normal groundstroke - a truly underrated shot of hers. I’ve yet to see anyone else really “hammer” their slice like Graf did, although it may have contributed to her eventual back and knee injuries.
With so much fat in her belly and stomach it was expected to lose so easily .It is sad and pathetic as well how agreat tennis talent as Martina HINGIS was let herself to decline so quickly

Ruano Pascual had some crazy good wins in Wimbledon. She has beaten Serena in 1998, Hingis in 2001 and Pierce in 2004.

@@co9971 If Serena Williams was just 17 so what
@@co9971 Defeating Serena, Hingis or Pierce for a player like Ruano Pascual, on any surface, at any age is a good win.
Virginia Ruano was number one in dobles. Well deserve victory
Awful to see Hingis lose this
As i remember Hingis really struggled with an back injury and she couldn't move propely so that is the explanation for this comical result.
But Ruano Pascual was never by far a power hitter.

Her techniques and movements are far from normal... definitely from injury.
Been looking for this match for ages. Do you have Zvereva beats Graf at Wimbledon or Shnyder bears Graf at US OPEN?
Hello Jose Antonio ! Thank you for liking my videos, I have only a short clip of Schnyder vs Graf 1998
Michael Hattenberg i would love to see it. I subscribed to your channel for all future videos and again thank you for your time.
Michael Hattenberg the Zvereva vs. Graf is on RUclips somewhere, unless the uploader removed it.
Hard to believe she lost in Wimbledon 1st round TWICE!
Don't think grass was her surface though, not enough power, she was more of a slow hard court player, which is why she did so well in AO back then.
Love to see Hingis lose.
In an normal way , Hingis won easily
Definitely. Ruano Pascual was a good player but she had the type of style that Hingis usually loved playing against.

she was involved in bets.Nobody tried to find it out, but Its clear the lack of effort from Hingis. That year was the beggining of tennis betting
Right, I'm sure she loved losing...
