    I really like mine. Would recommend trying one out if you get the chance. The build quality is great and I like the sound of it, especially in series. I got it a little over a year ago and I've learned quite a few songs on it. It even sounds nice in lower tunings in spite of the shorter scale length. I tend to keep it in D standard tuning (DGCF) to play Mastodon songs with since some of their songs are in that tuning. It's not the bass that I play most often (I have a Dingwall Combustion 5 which I am presently in love with and a cheapo Squier P-Bass with flatwounds that I got for $50 Canadian years ago that is great for Motown stuff), but it's a wonderful option.

    If you have not ever tried a stingray style bass before then you should totally get one of these! It's such a classic design and sound, every bass player needs to try a stingray style bass at some point. It's one of three types of basses that I like to call the holy trinity of bass guitars: Precision Bass, Jazz Bass, and Stingray. I was able to acquire one the high end, Music Man Stingray Specials in a 5 string earlier this year and it is an amazing instrument. Now I know you're looking at a Sterling model here which is Music Man's lower-priced import brand, but I've heard nothing but good things about the quality of Sterling instruments and I can testify this particular short scale model does do the Stingray sound. I plan on getting myself one these short scales someday.

      @@realbeal yeah, Indonesia. I have not personally played any Sterling basses so I can't speak from first hand experience. I just know the brand has a good reputation and I've heard nothing but good things about it. I do know that Music Man as a company has always been keen on maintaining a very high level of quality control; just about every instrument that comes out of their factory in California is flawless. So I'm sure they would extend the same concern QC to their Sterling instruments.

    Di. I saw this video a while back but I guess I didn't respond. I have this SS4 model in Arctic White. Personally I don't like active basses and the majority of my basses are short scale. I would never afford a MusicMan model although I believe they are of a higher quality than the Sterling. I am delighted with mine. I don't understand why they charge more for this short scale than they do for the 34" models with active pickups??? I find the bass is light and well balanced. I don't use the 'boost' and 99% of the time I use the series pickup configuration. I don't have a bad thing to say about it. I've had older Mustangs and the new PJ as well. The PJ was a huge disappointment for me. It had low output (I tried PUP height adjustments) and that switch location drove me nuts. Soon as I got the Stingray, I dumped the Mustang. I'm older than you are DI but I play short scale as a preference not because of any medical problems like arthritis etc.

    • @realbeal
      @realbeal  9 месяцев назад

      I wonder if the short scale costs more to produce because they are buying a smaller lot of parts. I have noticed the low output on the PJ so I crank up the volume on my sustain pedal and it seems to give it enough boost. Do you find you have a better reach on short scale?

    Having played a fair number of USA-made Music Man Sting Rays, I bought a Sterling by MM Ray35HH about 4 years ago, and I adore it! Sterling by MM (SBMM) make some great, affordable versions (without having to save up as much) of the Music Man basses, just not at the higher level of craftsmanship as the Music Man basses. That said, I've gigged with my Ray35HH, and honestly, the only upgrade I'll make is replacing the tuners.
    BUT THEN...I tried one of the SBMM Short Scales, and they are AWESOME! The only passive model in the SBMM bass lineup, it sounds great, feels great, and can get pretty close to the classic sound of a Sting Ray, while being passive. If you *need* another bass, you can't go wrong with it. The short scale even has me considering rewiring my Ray35HH to passive with similar controls.
    The SBMM Ray24CA is not made in California, but rather the CA is indicating it has the classic 2-band EQ, flat slab body and a narrower nut.
    Short scale basses aren't more susceptible to hum - they work on the same principle as a long scale bass (ferrous material [nickel or stainless steel strings] passing perpendicular through a magnetic field, generates an electrical current through the wire wrapped around the magnet, and passed through controls to the output jack), just with a shorter string length.
    Hum is more susceptible to one single-coil pickup being soloed (but it also is impacted heavily by how well the electricity lines and nearby electronics are grounded and shielded. Once you have 2 single-coil pickups played together at the same levels, this will generally start cancelling the hum (a humbucker is effectively 2 single-coil pickups wired together, either in series, parallel, or both), and is even better if one of the single-coil pickups is "reverse wound". Yay, physics!

    FYI, "true single coil" and "coil split" are technically the same thing. A humbucker pickup is literally 2 single coil pickups next to eachother with the wires wrapped in opposite direction and both coils active at the same time. So "coil split" is when only one of the 2 single coils in the humbucker is active while the other is inactive. "True single coil" is whenever you have a single coil pickup active by itself. So that means technologically they're the same thing. I'm guessing maybe Sterling used the term "true single coil" because on the new Music Man Stingray specials the pickup selector switch doesn't have an actual split coil mode, it has a mode where the coils are in series with an EQ filter that is supposed to mimic the sound of a single coil pickup so that you have the option of that kind of sound without 60 cycle hum. So maybe Sterling wanted to make sure it was clear to people that on their basses it is actually only 1 coil active 🤷‍♂️

    • @realbeal
      @realbeal  Год назад

      Sigh. Well, that is frustrating. Do you know why smaller basses are not produced with real humbuckers?

    • @randygomez9595
      @randygomez9595 Год назад

      @@realbeal maybe my comment was a little confusing. These basses do have real humbuckers. A humbucker is simply 2 single coil pickups side by side with the wires on each wrapped in opposite directions. And that's what these basses have. In fact I'm pretty sure they are neodymium humbuckers like the ones on the high end Music Man Special basses. Now a humbucker can be wired so that both coils are active at the same time in either series or parallel, or wired so that only 1 coil at a time is active. This bass has a 3 way rotary switch that let's you toggle amongst both coils active in series, both coils active in parallel, or only 1 coil active. What I was pointing out was that when you select the mode where only 1 coil is active, that can be referred to as either "true single coil" or "coil split" because both terms mean the same thing (only 1 coil is active). I hope that makes sense. Technology can be confusing sometimes
