    **TW anxiety, depression, general morbidity**
Way back in 2013, I found an expired calendar with photos of Australian waterfalls in an op shop; I bought it because the image of Horseshoe Falls caught my eye. The way the waterfall is framed by the lush plantlife and how it humbly carves itself out of the forest floor in quiet defiance really resonated with me. Horseshoe Falls would go on to inspire the setting in one of the stories I was working on at the time, and since then I’ve always wanted to visit them. Last month, I finally visited lutruwita/Tasmania and got to see them in-person. Russel Falls is far larger and impressive, and is the more famous of the two by far, but even after 11 years of hype the cosy, almost magical charm of Horseshoe Falls still enchanted me.
I chose to loop my 30-second video of Horseshoe Falls for the background of this particular song cover because of how existential the experience was for me - it was almost a bittersweet reunion with both nature and my childhood. The passion of my lifelong dream to write, to joy I used to experience while playing in bushland at my childhood home… all clashing with my anxieties about the ever-worsening environmental issues which threaten to desecrate such places, and the grief of losing my childhood innocence to trauma and the fast-paced obligations of adulthood. I feel just as lost, confused and resigned as ever even after achieving this bucket list item.
I relate a lot to the lyrics of What Was I Made For in general, but this trip in particular brought those feelings to the forefront. In fact, at the time of recording this cover I was having OCD-related intrusive thoughts about the possibility of dying in a plane crash, just a few days before the trip to lutruwita/Tasmania. The take isn’t perfect, but in that moment I just wanted to have that recording exist, something to leave behind in case I did die. This is why I ultimately decided against re-recording it - the thematic relevance felt more important than technical perfection. Some of the exhibits I saw at MONA further triggered me by reminding me of my mortality and my poor mental health surrounding that fact.
The trip left me with a lot to reflect on (positive, negative and everything in between) and this song touches on a lot of that (I’ve also just wanted to cover it since I first heard it), so I hope you all enjoy the cover and appreciate the creative choices I made in its presentation 💚

I pity the people who won’t look down in the comments. What may come off as a strange and unrelated to the song is actually so profound and personal to your connection and interpretation of it. You truly have artistic vision, even in understated ways as seen in this video. Keep it up!

Thank you so much! 💚 I only saw it once, kinda incidentally since my friend and I went to the wrong cinema for a different movie and we had to wait to get picked up. Overall solid movie that could’ve been a bit more concise with its characters and messaging, and of course the practical sets and visuals were 10s across the board 🩷

You really should if you get the chance - lutruwita/Tasmania has some of the most gorgeous wilderness I’ve seen here in so-called Australia! I love how Horseshoe Falls in particular look like something straight out of a fairytale, myth or legend… it was the perfect muse for my old high school stories ☺️💚

I have never heard of this song but this was a beautiful cover nonetheless,I really enjoyed it.
I had no idea that nature meant so much to you on an existential level and honestly I'm glad it has impacted you in such a positive way, both as a writer and a person.
The idea of having one's own childhood innocence lost,is something I wouldn't wish on anybody because it's very easy to give up on enjoying life when you're confronted with the existential dread that"what defines you may not always be what you thought it was".
It's something that could apply to so many things that can impact us on an existential level, whether it’s nature, religion,a person we look up to and so on.
As someone who was born and raised in a village where nature used to be my whole world, that's where the fondess memories of my life lie.
But me and my family moved from there to the city when I was only 9 years old and from then on it felt like everyday I was starting to lose a piece of myself.
Maybe it's cuz of the bullying I got everyday at my new school in the city, maybe it's cuz of my introverted nature that led to my lack of communication skills with others,or feeling betrayed by things I thought were inspiring when they weren't but, ever since then I've always wondered if I have already thrown my innocence away because I felt like I couldn't believe in anything anymore(not even myself)but I realized that I wouldn't wish such a state of being on anybody.
I'm not the most inspirational person in the world but I'll say this:Regardless of what happens,if something impacts you in a positive way, there doesn't always need to be a logical reason behind it,it's just something you have because it's what makes you,you and whatever life may throw at you and if it ever makes you feel confused or dreadful of the future or yourself, always remember your roots, your childhood innocence that defined what you believe in and I'm positive you'll find your way again.
I hope that what I said can help you somewhat

Thank you very much! It was actually part of the Barbie movie soundtrack - my friend and I mistakenly went to the wrong cinema for a different movie, and so we decided to watch Barbie last minute since we had to wait to get picked up. I thought it was alright (I especially loved the care and attention put into the practical sets - you don’t see that much these days with most productions relying so much on CGI), but that song in its simple appeal to universal existential questions was my biggest takeaway 🩷 Indeed, nature is very important to me - in fact, I’ve been a witch/pagan since 2020 and have been enamoured with animism, nature religions and environmental activism since childhood. If Australia didn’t have so many venomous creatures and harsh conditions, I’d be out in nature a lot more ☺️
I’m really sorry to hear that happened to you, and thank you very much for your insightful words 💚 I wasn’t born in a rural setting, but I did largely grow up in it which shaped a lot of my personality and interests. Personal circumstances have left me living in a more suburban setting in recent years which has been both stifling disheartening for me. Being autistic, I sometimes feel like I can relate to animals and plants more than humans - they lead much simpler lives and aren’t burdened by the level of sentience and self-awareness we are. Of course, nature is amoral and rife with suffering, but I covet the feeling of being more grounded and being able to focus on what matters most to a person. I think you’re onto something there - taking a step back and sifting through all the complex factors of life to find the few essentials for safety, health and happiness can be extremely cathartic. Often the greatest pleasures in life are the simplest ones - a favourite plant or tree, catching up with loved ones, playing with pets, writing a poem or doing some arts/crafts. Thank you again for your insight 💚

Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! While figuring out how to sing this song, I did think of invoking wailing for that part. The image of a bird calling as it flies above the trees came to mind as well, as if that note represents a wistful longing for a similar sense of freedom and confidence 💚

No worries! I have Barbie a 7/10 on Metacritic - I thought it was good, although they could’ve gone further with some concepts and condensed/refined the cast a bit to make a simpler but stronger story. In saying that, one of my favourite aspects of the movie were the practical sets - it’s so refreshing to have such an emphasis on that in this era of CGI-heavy media, it really makes the movie feel more cosy and tangible ☺️🩷
