Tip for chronic apologizers: Replace “sorry” with “excuse me” whenever possible! It’s a baby step but makes a huge difference. You don’t need to apologize when going through a crowd or for blowing your nose or accidents!
These are two people I could listen to (or, in a perfect world, hang out with or talk to) forever. The way they think, their compassion, and the way they communicate... all so engaging. Nessy’s facial structure and expressive, soul-on-her-face-ness doesn’t hurt her charm either.
As a dutchman living temporarily in the UK, I can relate to the over-apologizing here. People say 'sorry' to me like a dozen times a day for no good reason.
The purple couch has hit the interference phase with the Vanessa's camera, and made me absolutely glued to the bottom left corner of the screen most of the time. The pattern bending around the button is magnificent. Didn't want to disrespect anyone - just pointing out a nice visual phenomenon
Common Wealth countries apologise a lot. I have no idea why, but we will say sorry for bumping into a table or say thank you to the ATM. Being polite is just ingrained into us.
Etiquette, social grease. We aren't actually apologising, it's just in a crowded society when the majority of people are self effacing (less up themselves) there is less accidental antagonising.

I was so excited to see Vanessa on here; she's amazing! I love Braincraft. And Jessie was a total surprise! I've been wondering what she's been up to since she left. I miss having her around SciShow... she was especially wonderful on SciShow Kids!
I know Hank did not study Psychology but seeing Vanessa from Braincraft with one of the host of SciShow Psych made me think of a format that could be interesting: scientists debate. Get two scientists from the same field debate each other about an unproven theory in their field. There is a lot of debates of cranks vs scientists on youtube, like biologists vs creationists, flat earthers vs anyone with common sense, etc... Scientists debating scientists would show peoples part of the scientific method.
I over-apologize proactively when I want to end a toxic relationship without drama. I proactively concede all the points and apologize for the apology not being good because I don't have much experience apologizing. It's saved me from some incredibly scary dates, and situations with sociopaths who were using misusing their leverage in the interaction.
I try to replace a lot of apologies with thank yous too, it's good advice. Most of the time I say "sorry" when I feel I have inconvenienced someone even slightly, when I could instead thank them for helping me or tolerating me lol.
If I am boarding an airplane, and the gentleman ahead of me is holding up the line placing his overhead luggage. Situation 1: he says "excuse me, sorry about that" I smile and tell him "it's ok, please take your time." Result: everybody is relaxed and feel like we are in a friendly atmosphere. Situation 2: he says nothing, I say nothing, and now this guy is under all this stress thinking I am impatiently waiting for him. Result: Bad feelings all the way around. Situation 3: guy says nothing, and if I open my mouth and say "don't worry, take your time." My statement might come across as mildly sarcastic, and I have just rudely commented to him even though he didn't open the conversation. Result: awkward and bad feelings.
Omg! I used to love braincraft! I used to watch ALL THE VIDEOS! But with day to day things I kind of forget to check the channel. When I saw this video immediately thought "OMG! RUclips totally unsubscribed me of braincraft" (because this bug happens a lot here in Brazil) but when I check out the channel, I was still subscribed, so RUclips algorithm just 'decided' that I shouldn't get notifications of braincraft. The last video I saw was 8 months ago! That is so bad for the channel. Well, now I am going to binge watch braincraft again.
Saying "Oops" is a good method. It doesn't specify whether it's your oops or mine or just an accident of the universe. So people can take it however they want.
Braincraft uploads have utterly stopped being recommended to me. Or being found on the homepage. I also admit to not searching for them with much gusto. Looks like I have a backlog to watch by now!
If someone has a problem with me casually saying sorry for like walking in their way or something then I abruptly stop, narrowing my eyes as I stand in the person's path and say, "Now I'm NOT sorry, so next time you better be out my way, or YOU gonna be sorry!" That's just the Canadian blood coursing through me :)
I don't think you are over-apologizing at all. I do the exact same thing. And if someone else is in those circumstances, I find it very pleasing that they apologize, and I in turn will apologize back or say in a friendly way, no problem. Instant good feels. Conversely, when people are the opposite, I want to just say something rude back to them or secretly want to smack them upside the head. Instant awkward bad environment.
The channel Small Beans has a youtube show and podcast called Tales from the Pit that does more of the abnormal psychology (that's a technical term, it is generally very common abnormalities like depression, ADD, bipolar, etc.) from the perspective of patients dealing with these issues in their lives. Interesting content if you're looking for a different aspect of psychology than what Vanessa talks about.

Pardon me in Canada. Excuse me is actually a bit rude here.
Got it... Circled back to this video to find this comment and tip. I'll now proactively replace "sorry" with "excuse me." Thank you for this.

I think it's important that she doesn't do videos about depression because that's a dangerous topic due to how serious the condition is.
Unless she personally went through depression.
Rather unless she is specifically trained to talk about it.
