Thanks for making this awesome detailed tutorial! These are some very clever tricks. I wouldn't have thought Ableton could come in so handy for live playing.
I hope you will continue making videos :) If you have some time could you please check I'd like to ask few questions. :) I'm quite a newbie in using Ableton, I am a drummer, and I'm trying to do my best to achieve the appropriate knowledge of this software, live 9 is the very first daw i started to use and learn. I have the same Launchkey MIDI controller as you 1. Is it possible to set an automation for changing the midi preset in the same track? To make it clear: Let's say if I have a piano, some Giant preset for track 1, and then I want to use a different preset for the next part of the song, I'd like to set an automation to make Giant automatically change the preset at the right time. I can set automations for effects, volume, but not for the presets. It would help a lot when using arrangement view. 2. I have a Roland TD-11 electric drumkit also, this stuff can control many drum vst plugins, and also no problem with creating my own racks for it, it's perfectly working. What I'd like to achieve: Both the launchkey, and the td-11 (also as a midi controller) are connected via usb ports at the same time. I create a drum rack, in a midi track. I'd like to control (individual effects for the snare, or hihat) for example filters, reverb, delay or any effects of the drumkit, but using the launchkey controller buttons in real time, or after recording. I tried many things in midi mapping but I couldn't find out the solution. 3. I connect an electric guitar via jack cable to my soundcard, and then I open Guitar Rig 5 on the audio track. Is it possible to set the launchkey as a controller for the Guitar rig? I tried MIDI mapping, but Live did not recognize me pushing any controller buttons, and I'm sure it's because it's an audio track and not midi... But maybe you can confirm that there's no possibility or come back with the solution ;) 4. If I have multiple tracks, take for example drums for track one, bass for track 2, and an audio track for track 3, and then I want to change the track with the dedicated buttons on the Lauchkey, it changes between the MIDI tracks, but when the next track is an audio track, it also goes to the audio track, but the Arm button does not go red, and I have to click manually to start recording. This is very annoying. Is it normal? Do you have any idea? Thank you in advance for your help, and sorry of any of my questions are dumb, but it's just so difficult to find any good videos about these topics. :) Have a nice day, Greg
Some questions are a bit complex but I'll try to be brief: 1. Probably, through MIDI events inside the MIDI clip, but I never did. I'd use an instrument rack with multiple Giants loaded, each one with the desired preset and automate a macro, the way I told in this tutorial. 2. If you disable InControl you can assign your knobs and sliders to pretty much anything using MIDI learn. That way you can control everything. If there's something from your vst not linked in Ableton, hit "configure" in Ableton's vst instance and select the parameters of the vst you want to automate, then use midi learn to assign the knobs to it (i hope i was clear, it is not easy to explain) 3. The same as 2. 4. Check my Ableton loop tutorial. I assign the mute button to the record button. That way you can arm/disarm tracks quickly. In Ableton's settings you can allow (or not) multiple arms/disarms at once (usually you can arm only one track). I know I wasn't 100% clear, but hopefully you can use it as a starting point for you to figure out those things. Essentially, I recomend you to disable InControl before assigning anything to Ableton, that way you have generic MIDI signal and it is more versatile. Good luck and feel free to ask for help. If I can, I help. Cheers!
Thanks for the great video. After trial and error on the mapping, chain and midi got it to work and recorded as well. Track 1 (bass ) set to LKMK3 Midi, Ch1 , In Track 2 (piano ) set to LKMK3 Midi, Ch1 , In Track 3 ( where I recorded) set to All Ins, Ch1 , Auto, midi output ( no output -- cannot change to master) Track 3 recorded perfectly, but it doesn't play back Cheers, Rama
I don't have Ableton yet, but I'm thinking of coming over from MainStage. This is exactly what I'm looking for! My keys rig is actually simple, it's pretty much like this, but with a few different key patches on the whole keyboard, then as splits with the bass. Now I know it can be done! Can Ableton also take audio at the same time and throw reverb on it in this situation? For example if you wanted to livestream with a singer and your keys?
Yes, it can. And if your project doesn't exceeds 8 tracks you can use Ableton Lite that is included with Launchkey. All these features are present in it (perhaps I have made this video in Lite too, but not sure, its been a while). The setup for receiving audio will involve creating an audio track, setting its monitor to In and select the input. Idk how to setup it for streaming, though, but Ableton supports adding effects for playing realtime.
Quero me desenvolver no software para poder arranjar as ideias musicais . Tenho algumas composições. Este controler abre muitas portas para bons arranjos. Cabe agora esperar o controler chegar e iniciar o estudo do software Ableton. Abraços
Thanks for the great video! Can I also assign different outputs to the splits? For example (in a live situation) I would like to assign the bass only split to one output (going into a bass amp) and the organ split to another, going into a leslie. Is that possible at all? Cheers, K
Yes it is possible. If you have an audio interface with multiple outputs, select it in tracks' "Audio To" (in session mode it is right above the sends). Thank you for watching!
This is awesome! I'm using a Novation SL MKIII, and I'm having trouble getting a light to come on when tapping the lower row of pads. It successfully mutes and unmutes the sounds I want, but there's no light feedback to say what's Active. Did you set anything up to make that happen, or does the Launchkey operate like that? Right now, my SL MKIII is in "InControl" mode, and I was successful at creating colored clips that let me know what column is what instrument. But the "active" or not lights you have I don't. Thanks!
Hi! I don't know how SL MK3 works, but in Launchkey I need to be in Session Mode for it to work. I tried on Launchkey Mini MK3 and it also worked in Session Mode only.
Hi dear . Could u please help me ? . When i match the "ACTIVE " to launch pad key, taht sounds : " ding " and i dont khow why it sounds like this and whenever i press the launch pad keys to on instruments it sounds like " ding "
Dude, Is it possible to load Rhythm Pad Patches ( Roland SPD 20) to Novation Keyboard pads, to create rhythms? If possible please make a tutorial on that.
brupibo por favor mande um e-mail. Preciso de uma aula gravada. Vou pagar vc.

You need to check your MIDI Routing. Perhaps it is sending MIDI signal to a track it shouldn't.
Dude, Is it possible to load Rhythm Pad Patches ( Roland SPD 20) to Novation Keyboard pads, to create rhythms? If possible please make a tutorial on that.
I have no idea, but probably it is not possible. All that pads can do is to send/receive MIDI signals.
brupibo, okay
What's the model of the keyboard?
This one is Launchkey 61 mk2, but there is already the mk3 version.
For mac Command G for grouping
hi,, can you split the keyboard into 4 split zones with 4 instruments?
I think it is the same method, just add more instruments and zones. It might be tricker to make it turn off and on.
Vc tbm pode fazer esse tutorial em português ? Por favor me envie um e-mail: paulocesarsaturno@gmail.com preciso de uma video-aula.
