very informative and appreciated since I'm new to all this. I will say when I loaded a drum kit I had no sound on the keys or pads after scratching my head reading the launchKey Manual and wondering what I was doing wrong two hours had passed, I then powered down my LaunchKey 25 and powered it back up. I then got drums sounds to come through. I will be going over this tutorial a couple more times to get all the features that were shown. Thank You!

As a beginner I did learned from this video. On the other hand, although this person may be an great musician/engineer, he is NOT a teacher. He breezes through tasks which he obviously know like the back of his hand, but which take me going over an repeating 6 times to figure out what he was doing. In other cases he simply does things (zoom/scale the selection) but never mentions HOW he did it. And then, he take what feels like a full minute to describe how to download an attachment from email. Really? you could just tell me to download the attachment. I can figure that out. I would have preferred a few seconds more on a some of the Novation controls he found so natural.

Thanks for the link; I'll check it out. So far I"m loving my LunchKey 49 and software; it is incredibly capable, particularly for the price. It does have a steep learning curve, but I was expecting that.

I have a Launchkey 61, using Ableton live 9 lite, till the video 3 i have done all the installation and settings.....as you have show here when you control the INCONTROL buttons, it reflects on the ableton software, here nothing happens, why? Am using Windows 7.

I can't figure out how to hook up my launchkey 49 to Ableton Live lite. I work on a PC by the way.
I would like to know if you can change the banks of parameters while controlling devices ? For instance, when you show that you control Reverb in 12:55, you do not mention how to switch to another 8 parameters of that Reverb. In Ableton's User Remote Scripts there is an option to choose (write into the txt document) which buttons change the banks of 8 parameters in any Device. Is it possible with Launchkey ?
at 4:15 you press the top left incontrol button to start recording, but when i press mine it just Plays and doesnt Record? what am i doing wrong! Help would be greatly appreciated!!
Sorry to hear that you're having problems, Brad. Have you ensured that your Launchkey is correctly configured within Ableton Live's Link MIDI tab?
Open the ‘Live’ menu (Mac OS X) or the ‘Options’ menu (Windows), and select Preferences. Click on the ‘Link MIDI’ tab. In an empty row, choose ‘Launchkey MK2’ as the Control Surface. On Mac OS X, select ‘Launchkey MK2 (Launchkey InControl)’ for the input and output ports. On Windows, select ‘MIDIIN2 (Launchkey MIDI)’ as the input port and ‘MIDIOUT2 (Launchkey MIDI)’ as the output port.‘ Make sure that Track and Remote are enabled for both Launchkey input ports.
Is it possible to put single sounds on the different piano keys?
Yes, see how the Drum Rack in Ableton has notes on it, your Piano keys correspond to the note on the drum rack... so If you place a sample on the C1 container, your C1 note on you midi keyboard will play that sample as well as the drum pad that corresponds.

beautiful tutorial. I now know there is so much more I don't know. For, some reason, it was a bit hard for me to replicate the same things you are doing. I'm an absolute beginner btw. I still can't figure out how to loop.
How does the single fader on the 25 key behave? Is it volume for the selected track or always master?

Glad you found useful, apologies if it was a bit difficult to follow. What do you mean by, "round the bpm of the song"? Within Ableton Live, you can change the BPM by using the control in the top-left.

Hi Could you show us how to record sustain pedal using ableton live lite 9.
I m using Novation Launchkey 61 with pedal and I am also using Modern Upright Addictive keys Plugins in Ableton. However while recording any midi clip using this all, I can only see Ableton record's only the key data, but the sustain from the pedal does not gets recorded. Any help or any video to show how to record sustain using novation with pedals along with ableton DAW will be a great help.

Launchkey is a controller for Ableton Live and needs to be connected to your Mac or PC via USB to be used. It isn't possible to use Launchkey on it's own, it doesn't create any sounds and doesn't feature any internal storage or software.
You can play it in portable live situations with a lap top and an audio interface. Just hook a cable up to the monitor system.
HELP! I record using the pad. I play it back and I can hear it, however when I double click the clip to make changes there are no drawn in notes anywhere. Also, when I play the pads they are like EXTREMELY sensitive and I have to slam them to make it loud. Is this normal?

Is it possible in Live to sit back and listen to your finished song or do you actually have to switch scenes manually and perform the music?
Sure, Ableton Live has both a traditional, Arrangement view and a clip-based Session View. You can hit record and capture your performance in the Arrangement View or compose the entire track using that view.
Can you store user presets on the pads for the rotary knobs? Like on the Novation Controller?
This looks like its for mk2. Will this work with the original Launchkey?

where can i download the xcite promo 2015 pack? i have bought the launchkey Plus focusrite scarlette 18i8 interface. but i dont have the bundle code.
i have a problem, i have the launchkey 49 but when i try the turn on the clips the arragment thing .. turns in red and it doesnt sound i cant restore the clip .. unless i go a head highligth the arragment and click with the mouse and thats not the idea :S

That's right, this function is specific to the Mk2 range. Launchkey Mk2 provides a greater degree of control over Ableton Live via inControl. Pressing and holding the top InControl pad on a Mk1 Launchkey wouldn't provide an additional menu. Launchkey Mk1 also doesn't feature RGB LEDs so you wouldn't see a purple coloured pad. Are you having problems controlling devices within Ableton Live using your Launchkey Mk1? If so, we'd like to help. Is it only play via internet or just connect with laptop or play offline
An internet connection is only required in order to register your Novation hardware and access and activate the bundled software, available in your Novation account. After that, you can work offline, without an internet connection.
You can't do the sends and pan control with the MK1 right ?
When I hold the top in control button nothing happens, no lights turn on.
Hang on sir. Would one be bias just using Ableton for this demonstration? I didn't like Ableton daw, I use ye good ole logic there pro x, and I don't see help for me here sir. Could ya swing it so you could do a logic pro x version? I need translation!!

It's great to hear that you're interested in Launchkey, Zac! We don't mean to be biased. Launchkey was primarily designed as a controller for Ableton Live, communicating using a dedicated MIDI remote script within the software. Launchkey also comes bundled with Ableton Live 10 Lite.
Many of Launchkey's features are designed for Ableton Live workflow; the pads allow for quick and intuitive launching of Clips and Scenes, but you can, of course, use Launchkey with other DAWs too. The workflow will differ but you can manually map parameters for custom control. Sure! you just have to record sounds with pitch, like a siren or a baby crying or something.

Both provide tactile control over Ableton Live through the use of pads, rotaries and faders but Launchkey has the addition of keys for playing instruments and soft-synths.

My in control parameters arent doing anything for the sends. I figured it was automatic and didnt have to map it on ableton. Can anyone explain?

Im still not sure what to buy, the Novation Impulse 61 or the Novation Launchkey 61? Please give me some advice !
LaunchKey is lighter, less bulky and has better software. I'm waiting for my LaunchKey 49 mk2 after I sent back an Impulse 61. The Impulse arguably has a better keybed. I liked how the keys felt but did not like the aftertouch, which was so hard, I found it mostly useless. And I had problems with the AutoMap software.

I have brought Novation Lunchkey61 MK2 almost a year ago, it was working completely fine, but recently I m facing issue with Ableton.
The last key i.e 61st key in launchkey is not working with Ableton, Don't know why.
However, when I use this keyboard with other music software like synthesia, other than ableton it works completely fine. That means keyboard is completely fine. Have some issue with Ableton.
Any help on this please. I m getting frustrated, no other info available online.

No its for all the time. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Ableton 3 times but still this problem persist, and why Ableton is not auto detecting Novation Launchkey I have no idea on that also. I have a Launchkey 25 which looks a little different than this one. The InControl button doesn't work for me at all. Keys and pads work. Does this have something to do with my Operating System? I'm on Mac OS 10.6.8

Timi Boose I have the launchkey 25 too, and at first the pads wouldn't activate any samples, i found out how to make it work tho, try going to preferences, midi, and make sure there is a "Yes" in front of every Launchkey 25, you are gonna see multiple tabs with that name, make sure all are activated
The InControl rotors won't work on the MK1 which you may have. If you have the MK2 then make sure you have the most recent firmware. It says you need at least the 140 version to work, but mine didn't work on 144 but now works on 145.

The pads will natively control drums using the Ableton Live MIDI script, but you can use Ableton Live's MIDI learn function to assign custom controls for the pads per session.

I have a launchkey 61 MK1 and I can not get the purple pads to show up so I can set the parameters of each channel. Also, whenever I hit the 61st key(furthest to the right), ableton 9 lite creates a clip in channel 1. I didn't mess with ableton's key mappings... I think. The key mapping browser is blank, so I doubt I changed anything by accident. Anyone have any ideas? I've been searching for answers for a while.

I have the same midi keyboard.. I never use all them settings.. It's easier with a mouse 🖱 most of the time

What is the real difference between this and Launchkey Launchkey MK2?
Gustavo Cabral that is the Launchkey MK2. If you mean whats the difference with the old Launchkey, then it would be you don't have control over Pan, Send A, Send B.

Gustavo Cabral Me too but I think it would be fairly easy for Novation to update the firmware of the original Launchkey to function as the MK2. But Im not sure that theyll bother.

how do you get the drum rack sounds?
The sounds used in the Drum Rack in this video are from the Loopmasters content that comes bundled with Novation products. To access those samples you just need to register your Launchkey using your included Bundle Code. You will then find a download link in your Novation account.

hi i bought the launchkey 61 simply to use as a piano but all this seems more soundboard focused, help??!?!?!!?!?!?
Nutti Launchkey is a midi device so it does not make sounds by itself, a computer is used to make and use the sounds whilst the launchkey triggers those sounds to play. if you're new try using novation bass station, go to the novation website to download it and make sure you have the booklet and box that came witn your launchkey
I know that this is one year later, but this is a terrible choice to learn the piano on. This is a midi device not an electric piano.

This guy was way to fast and beyond where I am at. I don't know how to download any sounds to my Launchkey 49? I tried following directions on the tutorial on the live site but I couldn't even get it to play the "Grand Piano" on the tutorial on there. I need help If anyone knows of a better/easier tutorial for absolute beginners to music in general let alone all this stuff.
