This is a perfect video tutorial for beginners in Ableton and midi controller like me. Thank you for this video, I recently bought novation launchkey 61 but don't know how it works :( I was going to sell it but seeing this video made me determine to learn this midi controller further! :)
Brupibo Musical one question bro, is it necessary to have an audio interface like focusrite? Right now I downloaded asio sound driver to minimize latency. Thank you 🙂
It will be enough for playing one or two instruments in realtime, but I recommend you getting an interface when you can. It will be more reliable. If you're only using for VST, you don't need too much inputs. I recommend Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen (from Focusrite) or the UR line from Steinberg (I don't remember the model number of the smallest, I think it is UR22). Both offer a pretty low latency.
Thank you brupibo for this tutorial. It's just what I was looking for! I learned a lot from it. I wish you could do a video like this one for your Vintage Rock Realtime Loop video, it kicks ass and I would love to watch how you did it! Thanks again!
Hello! I have the same midi(novation launchkey 49 mk2). When I assign MIDI buttons to "ARM Recording"(1:46), the command only works as long as I keep the button pressed. When I release it, the ARM goes to its original state (off). help me please
Great tutorial. I am having issues with mapping the buttons to the arm button, however. I believed I followed the same steps, but when I press the button, it does not keep the instrument selected. I have to hold it down and play for it to remain "armed". Any idea what the problem is?
Thanks! Unfortunately I have no idea. I think there was an update in the script since I made this tutorial. More people reported this problem too. I'd suggest you to use the faders or the knobs to arm / disarm the tracks (I prefer the knobs, but in case you're using them for something else, you can use faders too). Knobs arms the track when above 50%.
yes my friend, your english isn't that good and you still managed to show and explain really clearly how to record using the launch key, thank you very much, so many others have tried and failed.
I am in love with your tutorial video. Just want to ask, is it all your method in this tutorial (recording and looping) could apply with the Launchkey Mini as well? I mean like, for the Mini one, we don't have the select buttons to choose our virtual instrument as your 61 Launchkey right (like on minutes 3:07 of this video) , so how can we do that? I am just thinking about to buy it, so really need your opinion first on this. Thanks in advanced
+Faiz Nordin thank you! I think you could place your instrument tracks in the order you're going to use it and switch the tracks using the track -/+ buttons on the left side of the mini. It won't be as fast as pressing a dedicated button, but I think it works. The pads should work the same way as in this video. I'm not sure, but you also can try to assign the pan knobs to the rec button in the tracks. When you turn it, the respective track arms. I didn't tested it, but 99% chances are it works :P
done subscribed! I think I have found the best Launchkey tutor here. You are not only good at making the video, you also have a very good attitude on how you treat your fans and answer all the comments here with a very humble way. Respect!
you should make more of this tutorial, i was looking for such tutorials, as i have the launchkey 61! Superb,.....btw, how long you been learning piano?
+sharath kumar I'll probably make more tutorials next year. Do you have any suggestions? And I studied keyboard (formally) for 3 years. Since then I've been reading and practicing by myself.
+brupibo Well, May be on How to use the Midi controller with Ableton, explaining the technical part? And further how to create your own track using Midi controller, and not depend too much on Plugins? And basics of Ableton? Nowadays I have read and seen people who are starting out fresh, getting tempted to use Plugins and use of Existing Loops, when music in actual is the creativity, flow, emotion etc., to create with an instrument rather than depending too much on technology? Of-course later stage one will have to edit, mix, arrange for audience to listen to it and further playing it live, but I think some might be lacking in what needs to be learnt in actual on music....... 3 years of Formal training, the skill you have essential for anyone to create music, awesome!
Hello dude... I also have launchkey 61... I have a problem.... When I map the buttons with the recording arm.. And when I press it.. It turn on and once I remove my hand after pressing it turns off... It does not continue to stay on as ur does at 1:47. Can uh plz help me out?
Hello! Thanks a lot for your tutorial!!! I've just bought my LC49 and eager to play smth. Your tutorial, in my opinion, is the best one to start PLAYING not only studing how to. Unfortunatelly I don't understand portuguese, so pls. go on in English. Like and subscribe for sure! Regards!!!
Hello! In your video, I stumbled upon my problem, but did not fully understand how to solve it. The fact is that when I set a quantization record and start recording a drum part, the ableton reproduces both the notes that I play and those notes that are quantized. And if I don't get into the rhythm, two notes are played in a row. Please tell me how to solve this problem, if you understand what it is about, thanks!
when I assign the button to arm track, it only stays armed while holding the button down. Is this something in my settings or preferences. This is my first midi controller.
Try these things: - On Ableton settings, are both Launchkey MIDI and MIDI2 devices turned on for Track and Remote? - Try to toggle inControl after you checked the steps before; - Check if your Launchkey firmware is updated; - Reinstall the drivers from the Novation site. I don't have it anymore, so I can't help more than that, unfortunately. Good luck!
@Yael Abraham never got it resolved. Just changed my workflow. I updated firmware and driver's and anything else I could think of. Apparently those buttons are set to latch and not toggle. And I could never learn how to change that. So I gave up.
Thanks for this - totally learned to use my launchkey from your video. I have one question - do you have a solution for once your project exceeds 8 tracks? The problem with that is we run out of buttons to assign the "Arm Recording" function. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much :)
Hi. There is no solution, unfortunately. If you need more than 8 tracks, you might want a Launchpad or some of the Akai Apcs. They have dedicated buttons for arming the tracks using their own script, if I'm not mistaken. Thank you for watching!
Brupibo Musical i did what u did..but when i select track(using ur method) it wont stay recording..i need to hold the record button(standard mapping is the mute button)to play
More people are complaining about this. I think might have some updated functionality since I did this tutorial that changes this behaviour. All my videos from Launchkey 61 were done using this mapping. As I don't have it anymore, I can't figure out what is happening, unfortunately.
You look like you know what your doing. I have just purchased the Novation Lauchkey 25. I have a like version of Abelton. It's all plugged in, but I have no sound whaen I press the keys. Can you help?
You need to insert a track with an instrument and arm it. Check on the top left if it lights up when you press any key in the controller. If doesn't, check your Ableton's MIDI settings, if it is receiving MIDI signal from your controller. Otherwise, might be a driver problem. Download the driver from Novation's page.
+mani anurag tadepally For live performances I'd use a pre recorded loop as guide, drums, fo for example. And the other loops you could do realtime. I don't know if there is another way of doing it.
Hello! hope you are well!, I have a problem! When I assign the midi map, I assign the recording buttons to the buttons of numbers that are under the faders, then when I select them, they do not stay activated to record, since releasing it deactivates
@@brupibo as everyone says, thank you for an excellent video - this is the best I've found out of all the others out there. BUT I am having the same problem as Alfredo Salas - when I press the button under the sliders, the record button turns off when I release the button. I already have Remote activated for the Launchkey in the Midi settings... and I've followed your video carefully, the InControl button is switched off...
Thanks! I read some forums suggesting that only 1 Launchkey should be activated at a time on settings (there's midi 1 and 2). Sorry I'm not able to help more. I no longer have Launchkey, so I can't test it here. I see more people have this issue and Indidn't find an answer online.
@@brupibo Hello! Thank you very much for your answer! check my midi input settings and everything was in order .. i was able to solve the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the ableton!🙌
I have a more recent tutorial about that: ruclips.net/video/QpwFc0t2qqI/видео.html Basically: the loop follows your global quantization. If you set it to Bar and try to stop the loop mid bar, it will finish it before stopping it. The same happens when you start the loop while the song is playing.
@@brupibo Thank you. I created a workflow where I record into empty clips with preset length using session rec/overdub. No more need to stop rec at precise instant. Great videos!!
+ogün türkeş The extra time it takes it is because global quantization is set to 1 bar by default, so the record only stops when it reaches the next bar. Check in the manual how to set it to off. It is simple, but I can't show you visually right now. But be aware it might be hard to sync two or more loops if you don't quantize it.
+mani anurag tadepally in the Preferences window, in Files & Folders tab, check "Custom vst folder" and select the folder your vsts (dll) are installed. Then you will find them on Plug-ins tab.
I do have another question if you don't mind. I am about to buy the Launchkey Mini, and they said the DAW included for Ableton is the 'Lite' version only. So I am quite curious if the Lite version was very different with the full version. Is all the instruments that you used in this video was already with the Lite version or any upgrading is needed?
+Faiz Nordin I used only Live Lite features/sounds for the tutorial. If you need more sounds, get Komplete Free plugin, from Native Instruments. If you need more effects, MeldaProduction has good free effects for EQing, compressing etc. Computer Music Magazine also is inexpensive and comes with a lot of useful plugins for sounds and effects (and it is a good magazine too). And this Xpand2 is an awesome collection of sounds, it was free for a while, I don't know if it still is but take a look, it totally worths: store.dontcrack.com/product_info.php?products_id=2954 You will need to upgrade Ableton only if you reach track/scene limit or need advanced features. I don't think you need to do it right now. Not for the sounds, anyway. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. I had all the version of the Ableton. I started with lite and kept upgrading once per year (end year is good for doing so, there's usually 20-25% off).
Hi brupibo! I'm an absolute beginner with Ableton Live and Novation. I followed your tutorial and more or less it's all ok. But there is a problem: I register a loop but it doesn't work continuously, there is allways a stop between one loop and the following. Can you help me? thanks
Hi! Check if you are quantizing your recording and check if your global quantizing configuration is in 1 bar. Have in mind you need to hit the stop button before the loop closes, so it is quantized on that bar and not on the next.
Other little question! Kontact 5: how can I make permanent the connection between Ableton and this application? I did it, but when I close Ableton and after I restart it, I don't find Kontact 5 under the Plug-in anymore. Thanks
This shouldn't happen. It might be something with your system. Sorry, but I can't help with this. Is VST Folder enabled? Did you tried to run as admin once, to set VST folder? If you did both, I recommend you search Ableton's forums.
A combinação Ableton Live + Launchkey é poderosa. Haha. Valeu!
+arpeet biswas you need to check the global quantization, the default is 1 bar. So, when you press the pad, the bar you're recording will be the last one before the loop starts again.
+arpeet biswas there is no fix. It is how it works. I advise you to check Ableton Live's manual, read about "Scenes", "Clips" and "Global Quantization". If you need something less quantized, like that Boss Pedal RC-3, check for the "Looper" audio effect (although it works only with audio, not MIDI).

+arpeet biswas You need to press the button to close the loop (the same you use to start recording the loop) before the end of the bar.
Does it require proper timing??? Can you teach me please??
+arpeet biswas you need to check the global quantization, the default is 1 bar. So, when you press the pad, the bar you're recording will be the last one before the loop starts again.
How to fix that??
+arpeet biswas there is no fix. It is how it works. I advise you to check Ableton Live's manual, read about "Scenes", "Clips" and "Global Quantization". If you need something less quantized, like that Boss Pedal RC-3, check for the "Looper" audio effect (although it works only with audio, not MIDI).
Oi. Obrigado por tu talento. I'm from Mexico but I live in USA. I think that nobody going to believe it, but I find a Novation Impulse 61 Controller Keyboard in a thrifth store by $7.99 dls!!! in perfect condition! I have a i5 7 Generation Dell laptop, I install the Ableton Live Suite 9 but there is a very important thing: I don't play piano, I don't know to much about music, for years I work with computers and I can use many softwares but using a DAW with music software production is a total new world for me but I want to learn. My question is can you help me to know how I can learn about using this equipment and the same time learn to play, learn read music. I do photography and video, so for me editing video and photo with programs are not a problem. I have different sennheisers, audio-technica microphones, Tascam and Mackie small mixers. So, in some way I'm not too far from this new world. I will really appreciate your orientation. If there are another way to can communicate with you will be great. Thanks!
ur awsome bro thanks but make captions perfect
Thank you! But I didn't understand the caption part. If you meant subtitles, well, it takes too much time for me to do it. If you have questions feel free to ask here. Cheers.
